Check-in for 01/28/24
It's been a while since I did one of these. Time to remedy that!
I've been doing well in my assignments, but due to some registration issues at the start of the semester I was unable to sign up for any web development or programming classes :< It's nice to take a break, but I'm really worried about getting stagnant in those skills, and maybe even losing what I've learned over time.
This is where a couple of new projects come in: A blorbo database and a tool for drawing pokemon from memory. These things are going to keep me avoid stagnancy and help me develop my web dev and Python programming skills, and I'm real excited to talk about them.
Tumblr media
First up, let's talk about that tool for drawing pokemon from memory. I love drawing pokemon from memory, but it's a bit of a struggle to find tools online that work well for a solo experience when you're doing this challenge alone. So I made a program in PyGame to solve this problem, and I've actually already completed it! It was a great learning experience when it came to getting a taste of APIs, and PokeAPI really helped me do all the heavy lifting with it. I also ended up using ChatGPT to help me understand how to phrase my questions and the things I needed to research. This is the end result:
Tumblr media
If you click "Get Random Pokemon", the program will provide a pokemon's name. The point of it is to draw the pokemon as best as you remember it, and then click "Show Pokemon Image" to see how you did. You will then have the option to get a new random pokemon, which clears the image from the window.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There's a lot of stuff I don't understand about how the program works--- APIs evade my understanding, and Tkinter is a dark art beyond my comprehension. But I was able to make a program that solved a genuine problem for me for the first time, and that's super exciting to me!
Now, for web development--- long story short, I'm making a website dedicated to cataloguing my OCs that's very much inspired by tumblr user @snekkerdoodles's personal site on neocities, which I regularly stare at in an effort to motivate myself to make cool things like it (everyone reading this should check his page out IMMEDIATELY and tell him how cool it is). Here's the screenshots of the WIP I'm chipping away at right now:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I don't have much to say about it, as the interesting stuff will really be the content of the pages, and I still have yet to finish the template page I'll be filling with my OCs' information. However, I can say that I'm very upset with the lack of proper teaching that took place in the first (and currently only) college web dev class I've taken. I spent an entire semester doing my own research to learn everything they were supposed to be teaching us. I'm still very peeved about that.
To summarize this very rambling post I'm too sleepy to edit properly, I'm making a digital blorbo encyclopedia, and I finished making a little desktop app thingy, which means I need to summon a new programming project. I'm tempted to make it a video game... maybe I should turn back to that visual novel idea I had ages ago and boot up RenPy!

welcome !
March 21 2024
Hello! I've been working on making a game for a short while, but there isn't really much progress as I do it on and off. I thought that a blog like this might help me hold myself accountable and put more time and effort into the development of the game, so here I am:)
I'm really making this for myself, but if anyone wants to follow along, I'd be more than happy.
The game I'm working on is a 2d RPG, where the player has to run a café (with a twist lol). That's all I'll say for now haha but more info will follow as I become more certain of the story:)
So far I have the story and characters ready but obviously I'll be tweaking them as I go. The coding hasn't gone far as I feel like I need to work on the art first but so far I have the window and the player movements down as well as walking animations. Next thing on my list is redesigning the café and the tilemap.
This is my first ever game and I'm very very very new to coding, so I'm trying not to make this a really big project but you never know.
Thanks to anyone who read this !

Experience the Quirky and Relatable World of I Wani Hug that Gator
Tumblr media
I Wani Hug that Gator is a unique choice-driven narrative game for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. The incredible team behind Cavemanon deserves heartfelt thanks for this release. Available on Steam and itch with 98% Overwhelmingly Positive reviews. Since we're always on the lookout for games that break the mold and offer something fresh. I Wani Hug that Gator does just that. This isn't your typical story-driven experience. It's a visual novel that really emphasizes choices and their outcomes. While wrapping it in a story that's both quirky and relatable. Imagine this: you're Inco, stepping into your senior year, ready to take on whatever comes your way. But life throws a curveball - your family is moving across the country. This is where the real journey begins. I Wani Hug that Gator is a tale of new beginnings, a chance to rebuild from scratch. You might relate to this, having faced similar situations where you had to adapt and find your footing in new environments. The core of this experience lies in how you navigate Inco's social life. This is also where the game truly shines. You're not just passing time at school; you're making decisions that shape Inco's relationships and future. And let's talk about Olivia – she's a character that adds a whole new dynamic to Inco's life. Their interactions are like a dance, sometimes harmonious, sometimes stepping on each other's toes. Since it's this complexity that adds depth to the narrative.

But here's the kicker – your choices don't just affect the storyline; they lead to one of four unique endings. It's also a reminder that in life, like in this story, our choices have real weight and outcomes. I Wani Hug that Gator about understanding and accepting who you are, and the power of second chances. Now, a heads-up: there's mature content in the title. We're talking about implicit references to drug use and some accidental violence. It's handled with care, but it's something to be aware of if you're sensitive to these themes. There is a Free Demo for Linux, should you want to try before you buy. Overall, I Wani Hug that Gator choice-driven narrative is a breath of fresh air. It's a blend of humor, drama, and real-life challenges, offering a story that's as engaging as it is thought provoking. It's not just about playing through a story; it's about shaping it with your decisions, making it a deeply personal experience. Available on Steam and itch for Linux, Mac, and Windows PC. Priced at $14.99 USD / £12.79 / 14,79€.

Hey! I recently completed a project about graphing the entire human noosphere, or realm of ideas, and made a video on it. You can find the video here, complete with some existential dread.

Lunar Harvest
I should probably tell you that I participated in this month's Ludum Dare with my game "Lunar Harvest". It's not particularly big, because I didn't have the full 48 hours this weekend, but it's a perfectly fine compo game: Everything was done within 48 hours by myself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The code is rather simple, so much so that you could probably use it as an "Invent your own games with Pygame" example, but it wouldn't be a Blubberquark game if it didn't have that one feature just for the hell of it. This time it's not controller support, GIF screenshots, discord status, or twitter integration, but procedurally generated cows.
There are no instructions beyond what controls to use. That's on purpose. You will have to figure it out!

dev log #1
March 27 2024
Hello again! It’s been a week since my last post and I thought it’d be a good idea to do these weekly even if I don’t get much done. I’ve been out a lot since the last post (crazy right?) so I haven’t worked on the game much.
I’m almost done with the café, it just needs some more shading. I went for a sage and cream color palette but it might be too much green. I might change it as I go. Here’s how it looks so far.
Tumblr media
I originally went for a diner theme but it ended up looking really stupid haha. Instead I’ve tried going for a more cozy vibe. I’m going to add more detail to the rugs and leaves to the pots. I still need to redesign the player sprite since it doesn’t fit the café theme anymore. By next week I’ve hopefully finished all that and also set some boundaries so the player doesn’t walk where it shouldn’t.
Despite my username I really haven’t done much pixel art so I’ve been practicing so the game doesn’t look horrible. This isn’t game related but I drew this to see how a character would look in this style
Tumblr media
I don’t know if I’ll use this style in the game but I don’t think it looks too bad so I might just do it.
Thank you for reading and thanks for the follows! I really appreciate everyone who wants to join me on the journey:D
Let me know what you think! Any feedback is welcome!
One last thing haha I’ve been getting a lot of motivation from reading other people’s dev logs so if you’re a game dev and you want to be mutuals let me know!!:)
