I suddenly want to see how Blake would be if she had a bit of Dr.Grey's personalty.
I really hope I got the right girl.
---------------------------------------------------
Blake: Good news! She missed your lower intestine, and any vital points in your circulatory system.
Weiss: That's good.
Blake: No, honey; you had a flaming spear inside of you. That's the opposite of good. Now, remember to not put too much strain on yourself, or else you could reopen the wound. And believe me, it won't be pretty.
Weiss: Duly noted, but if you call me anything other than ma'am, I will shove a flaming spear inside of you.
Blake: Ooh! You're hostile! I'd love to psychoanalyze you.
Oscar: (Ozpin) It's good to see alright, Ms. Schnee. We'll need you for the coming fight.
Blake: ...So, there's a little boy who sounds like my old Headmaster. Anybody want to introduce me?
Oscar: (Ozpin) I am Ozpin, former living headmaster of Beacon Academy. Upon my death, I was resurrected into the soul of young Oscar Pine here, who has been an unhelpful nuisance other than a mode of transport.
Oscar: Then feel free to get out of the vehicle. I'll even park so you can walk out safely.
Blake: Ooh, forget you! I'm gonna psychoanalyze them! Wait, no, that's not fair. Psychoanalyses for everyone!
..................................................................................
Blake: Excuse me! ...Where did you find that sword?
Pyrrha: Uh, in an ancient ruin outside Shade.
Blake: Uh-huh, and are you certain it's man-made?
Pyrrha: Why wouldn't it be?
Blake: Well, for starters, it isn't using human technology. It just emitted an arcane wave pulse. Very deadly. And pretty! May I?
Pyrrha: Uh, sure?
Blake: ...Ah, I thought so. Magical catalyst. I've seen this countless times.
Pyrrha: Countless times? Um, you seem to know a lot about magic.
Blake: I'm a genius with an IQ of 240. A girl can only cut open so many soldiers before she needs to find a hobby.
Oscar: Um, I don't feel very safe around you anymore.
Oscar: Neither do I.
Blake: I sewed them back up, Mr. and Mrs. Panicky. Thank you very much!
..................................................................................
Blake: Move out of the way! Doctor coming through!
Sun: Argh, dammit!
Blake: Oof! That is a LOT of blood.
Weiss: Yes, please fix him. Without any creepiness.
Blake: Only if you hold back your snarkiness.
Weiss: ...I am not snarky.
Yang: Weiss-
Weiss: I am not snarky! Besides, even if I aas, which I'm not, at least I was able to capture that prisoner.
Sun: Ow!
Blake: Oh, don't be a baby. It's no different from sewing a coin purse. Or a sheep bladder.
Sun: (Hisses, Winces)
Blake: There. You should be all good-
Sun: (Tries to get up) Great, Doctor, because I need to get back in the fight-
Blake: -AFTER you rest for three days.
Sun: What?! Ow!
Blake: You lost a lot of blood. It'll take a few days to replace what you lost. Until then, you are on comfy bedrest.
Neptune: So nothing's changed?
Sun: Haha...
Yang: I just got word he's awake.
Weiss: Good. Maybe we can finally get some answers from him.
Blake: Excuse me, I was kind of busy saving your friend's life. Did you say the prisoner was awake? If so, I'd like to speak with him... alone.
Yang: What? Why?
Blake: Well, if you recall, he and his friends turned everyone on my island into piles of ash and gore, and the sand into glass. Anyone that violent would certainly benefit from a... psychoanalysis check-up.
..................................................................................
Blake: Hello!
Thug: Do whatever you want! I'll never break!
Blake: Hm, I see. And tell me, do you know where we are? This is a remote research facilty designed to study the surrounding wildlife. I did an internship just like it in grad school. It has a laboratory, an incinerator, and oodles of state-of-the-art surgical equipment and chemicals! Would you like me to show you~?
..................................................................................
Blake: His name is Tyler Diggs, he's ex-White Fang, and he was kind enough to hand over the coordinates to a nearby radio jammer!
Weiss: That's... insane. How did you do it?
Blake: I just had him weigh his option between severing his spine and not severing!
Yang: Are... Are you insane?
Blake: No, silly! I'm Dr. Belladonna! Ha! Dad joke!
Yang: Uh, can we go see him?
Blake: Of course! Let me just go put him back together.
..................................................................................
Blake: Oh, it's been so long since I've done field research. I'm glad you invited me out here. I going a little crazy with all the whining and complaining. "Oh, my blood hurt!" "Nobody told me to bring my medical record!" "Please stop drawing blood, I'm feeling tired!"
..................................................................................
Blake: Ruby, if you could, can you have Crescent Rose perform a thermal scan of the area?
Ruby: Oh, uh, sure! ...Um, sweetie?
Penny: YES, CAPTAIN MOMMY?
Ruby: Can you get Mommy, um, a thermal... sweater... from the base?
Penny: YES, MOMMY.
Blake: If you put the AI of a killing machine into a sniper rifle-scythe, you don't cut corners.
Qrow: Uh, wouldn't it be safer to give Ruby full control of the weapon?
Blake: Oh, no, no, no! You see, I had already run the tests, and came to the indisputable conclusion that we are all safer with Penny in charge than Ruby, who had the weapon for eight seconds, and sent fifteen of our own people to the hospital. We were BIH-ZEE that day.
..................................................................................
Blake: Well, this is certainly one of the more interesting symbiotic relationships I have ever seen. But maybe you and the sword should take some time to breathe and talk things out.
Jaune: Oh, really? Well, uh-
Blake: Right after I administer some electroshock therapy.
Sword of Destruction: RUN, YOU FOOL!
Jaune: Um, no thank you! (Sprints away) NO THANK YOU!
Blake: WE'VE GOT A RUNNER~!
Jaune: YOU'LL NEVER TAKE ME ALIVE! YOU'RE CHASING A TRACK-RUNNER LETTERMAN!
Blake: RUNNING ONLY MAKES ME WANT YOU MORE!

Grief, Guilt, and Bloodied Hands
cross posted from twitter I want to talk about this episode's use of 'bloodied hands' and how it ties into Ruby as well as Rosegarden. This post does get *dark* tho & includes shots from some of the more distressing scenes of v9e8 so please tread with caution.
Tumblr media
I don't really have to get into detail with how this episode was framed with saving Oscar until last being what pushed Ruby over the edge and why that's important. It's very clear to everyone that saw it. But let's talk about how we get there.
Ruby's aura broke when she fell from the chandelier and then she was tossed around by a few of Neo's puppets while Oz is left out of frame until the very end. It is only then that she starts to show welts and bruises, at the other end of Long Memory. Before vs After:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We can see she's got her own blood on her hands here. The way they use this particular visual cue is threefold.
The first thing it's symbolic of is her own inner wounds. How much they've hurt her, how they've led her here, & where they're leading her next. Also in the most literal meaning of the metaphor, this is emphasized by Ruby's 'death' being on her own hands by the end of the episode.
The second is that those 'inner wounds' of hers are partially the lives of all the people she couldn't save. Her grief and her guilt.
And the third association is being symbolic of the people she hasn't lost yet. Specifically Oscar. Which we can tell because immediately after that last image (the first time we're shown the blood), we see her hand grabs her weapon before she defends herself.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is followed by the cane falling before we're shown that the blood on her hands is now Oscar's. The first time she's able to use Crescent Rose all volume and this is how she's rewarded for it.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the beginning of this episode, she pushes Little away because she's convinced that if they stay with her, they'll end up dead too. I will get to them next, but first this confirms something very strongly:
That Ruby is afraid to move forward. Not just because of her past, but also because of her fear for the future.
In her monologue in the v4 finale, she says the following:
"Believe me when I say I know it can feel impossible. Like every single day is a struggle against some unstoppable monster we can never hope to beat... but we have to try. If not for us, then for the people we've already-... for the people we haven't lost yet."
This sequence is literally all of Ruby's motivations and fears combined into one torturous nightmare.
"If you stay with me, you're going to end up dead too."
She is being tricked into believing that if she stays with her friends, with Oscar, the same will happen to them.
That idea is what breaks her for the first time this episode before she's interrupted by the cat.
Tumblr media
Brief sidestep to mention that the way they frame this particular shot implies that Yang is of similar if not equal importance to Ruby here. Cause yes I'm looking at this specifically through an RG lens, but it is very important to acknowledge this scene included more than just 'shipping fuel' in how much Oscar means to her. This is her character arc, her fatal flaws, and the importance of multiple relationships she has. It started with her grief toward Pyrrha & co., an emphasis on her grief and closeness to Penny, wrapped up with the fear of losing Oscar, and then everyone else.
Ruby first reaches for the tea after watching Oscar fall & is interrupted by the cat. But even when she later comes back to her choice, we are not allowed to forget just how much that scene hurt her. Because as Little is begging her to get up and run, they are holding onto that bloodied left hand that pulled the trigger.
Tumblr media
When Neo... does what she does to them, the narrative is telling us that Little as well as the blood on Ruby's hands (and all the things it's associated with) combined together to steal all her remaining light away.
"The light of hope is taken."
Tumblr media
"If you stay with me, you're going to end up dead too."
She is proven right twofold.
First, with the illusion of Oscar.
Then again with Little who is very much not a mirage. "If I stay or go back home, my friends will die. I stayed here, and another did die."
And she, quite literally, can't live with that thought.
-
I don't thinkg Oscar's very loud absence or the similarities between him and Little as I've mentioned in other posts, compounded with both of them being used by Neo as the last piece to get Ruby to 'break' are a coincidence. And while I'll admit this episode was flawlessly executed, I am manifesting that this show never gets that dark again because I don't think I can take it.
Thank you for reading, and pls manifest that reunion hug. 😭 🌹🌲

there's something to the reveal that raven and qrow were sent to beacon to learn how to kill huntsmen. it's not just fun little backstory tidbit, not when the following volume they pretty much distances qrow away from it; he idolized the grimm reaper, a huntress, before beacon; that creates a reason for doubt that qrow was ever there for what the tribe wanted him to do.
cinder & co pretended to be students from haven. the fall of beacon was kick-started by students severely harming or killing other students during the tournament; yang breaks mercury's leg in an episode called 'fall'. it gets followed by 'beginning of the end', a flashback episode during which cinder & co attack amber, the fall maiden, before getting back to the present day and the aftermath of 'fall'. pyrrha kills penny in 'PVP', a player vs player. and it's in 'end of the beginning' when cinder kills pyrrha, ozpin's candidate for the fall maiden.
someone without a goal of actually becoming a huntress, attending an academy with a goal that involves killing... the beginning of the end and the end of the beginning; the first act. the first move.
something something... in war, truth—knowledge—is the first casualty.

Zwei Vs Curious Cat
Ruby: Jaune’s been acting so strange lately! Do you think it has anything to do with the Curious Cat escaping into Remnant?
Zwei: The conclusion is as inescapable as it is moronic!
———————————————————————
Ruby: *kicks open door to Shade Academy headmaster’s office* Headmaster, we want answers!
Zwei: *racks battle rifle* I’m warning you, if I have to get cute, it’s going to get ugly!
———————————————————————
Curious Cat: Well, well…! Look what the cat dragged in!
Zwei: *gasps* You can talk?
Curious Cat: Wait, YOU can talk?!
———————————————————————
Jaune: *shaken out of possession* …so I had all of my mental recovery from Pyrrha and Penny’s deaths undone by that psychedelic furball?!
Jaune: *punts Curious Cat* Bad kitty!

What's your most hated scene/moment of each RWBY volume?
v1: anything to do with jaune / conclusion to blake & weiss's arc where weiss doesn't even apologise for the racism, just says that she doesn't care that blake was in the wf.
v2: the students laughing at jaune wearing a dress / the talk between jaune & neptune on who can "have" weiss.
v3: any of the superfluous fights because they were so goddamn boring / the reveal of adam as a toxic, abusive ex complete with cringy dialogue & a caricature of what abuse looks like.
v4: the cringy humour moments like ruby laughing at jaune's bunny hoodie or nora telling ren to look away when he accidentally looks up her skirt / any of the blake scenes. especially her slapping sun.
v5: hazel blaming ozpin for the death of his sister as if it wasn't her decision 😭 / the bird scene with qrow & yang where she just goes off on one for no goddamn reason.
v6: pyrrha statue / qrow assaulting oscar & everyone ganging up on ozpin after the revelation of his worst trauma & abuse & murder by his wife.
v7: the coworker not friends scene / rwby vs the ace ops.
v8: just everything with james / penny dying.
v9: ruby's suicide scene / everyone comforting jaune afterwards as if it wasn't ruby who'd just killed herself.

Why is Penny's Sacrifice Acceptable?
We've seen attempted Heroic Sacrifices before in RWBY, but such attitude has been deconstructed. We have Jaune against Cinder in Volume 5, attempting to kill Cinder no matter the cost to himself. We have Winter telling Penny that she should not have been saved at the end of Volume 7, which Penny refuted. One could even argue that the climax to Volume 4, with Ren's unnatural aggression towards the Nuckalee is seen in a similar light. Trying to kill the monster of his nightmares no matter the cost to him.
So why are those attempts to die to save people rejected and seen as toxic. While Penny's sacrifice was an affirmative, thematic thing to do?
Hi!
I honestly hope this season will give us the thematic answer, tbh!
Still, if you wanna my opinion, as for now...
I think it is because the theme explored is not the dychotomy between life/death, but rather it is the dychotomy between self-actualization and negation of the self.
Pyrrha and Penny affirm who they are through their deaths, while Jaune, Ren and Winter's attempts are born by self-hate.
Let's clarify... Pyrrha and Penny's deaths are not a positive things. They are a tragedy, but a tragedy, which is born from outside circumstances rather than because of Pyrrha and Penny's flaws.
Sure, you can say that Pyrrha's wish to be a hero made her into a martyr... and that Penny's objectification by Atlas and how she internalized it is why she finds in the scenario that leads to her death... Still, their final choices are not born by these flaws. They are born by the willingness to affirm who they are. They are manifestations of their final goals. Of their destinies.
Pyrrha's destiny is to be a Hero, a Huntress. So, when the time comes she chooses to fight Cinder to try and stop her from destroying Beacon Tower, even if it means giving up on Jaune. The Destruction of Beacon means each country becomes isolated and weakened. This is why she tries, even if she knows she will probably die.
Penny's destiny is friendship. So, when the time comes she chooses to fight to protect her friends, even if it means putting the relic and the Maiden powers in danger. When Cinder strikes her and Penny has to choose who should get the power she chooses Winter (who she wants) over Weiss (who needs the power at the most in that moment).
As you see, Pyrrha and Penny's final choices are also a different takes on the want vs duty conflict.
Pyrrha spends the majority of her arc by following what she wants. A life as a normal teenager. However, by the end she chooses to kiss Jaune goodbye and fights Cinder. She chooses her duty as a Huntress.
Penny spends the majority of her arc by trying to be the hero and to balance what she wants with what she must do. Still, in the end she chooses her friends over her duty as a Maiden.
Let's also highlight this is not so black and white. By the end, Pyrrha finally succeeds in conveying her feelings for Jaune. Something she struggles with throughout her whole story. Similarly, Penny by the end manages to keep the Maiden Powers safe from Cinder, hence succeeding as a Maiden.
As you can see, the important thing is not what they choose. It is not that the series says duty is more important than want. Or that Pyrrha is right and Penny is wrong. Or that they are both wrong. Or both right for that matter. What the series highlights is that their final choices are not born from the desire to destroy who they are. Rather it is an affirmation of who they are. Pyrrha is a Hero. Penny is a Real Girl. This is what they want to be and this is who they affirm they are in their last moment.
I would also like to highlight that both Pyrrha and Penny have moments where they are about to sacrifice who they are for the sake of others. And both are framed as wrong:
Pyrrha is asked to absorb Amber's aura through the Aura Machine. This is framed as sinister and Ozpin adds Pyrrha might not be herself anymore at the end of the process. The implication is Pyrrha might have lost her feelings for Jaune and her loved ones. If Pyrrha had successfully gone through it, then the choice would have been wrong. Still, Cinder interrupts the process and leaves Pyrrha the chance to make her own choice. To be a hero on her own terms, not because someone pressures her. To be a hero because she is Pyrrha Nikos (a normal girl with a huge heart) and not to give up Pyrrha Nikos in order to become a hero (a maiden with powers).
Penny tries to sacrifice herself twice (really three times). The first time, she suggests she should go to Salem with the Relic, but Oscar points out Atlas would have still fallen. The second time, she suggests to Weiss she should just leave her behind because Cinder only wants the power. She is immediately proven wrong by Cinder, who states she is gonna kill everyone regardless. Both times she tries to sacrifice herself heroically for others, she is shot down by the narrative. Such a choice would be useless. Finally, she tells Ruby to kill her, so that she can protect the powers. Ruby finds an alternative and so Penny gets to be saved. The final choice, is not like the previous ones. There, Penny is already dying and there is really not third option. There is not enough time to cure her. All Penny can do is then to make a final choice. This choice can be one of negation... Giving the power to Cinder. Giving it to Weiss even if what she wants is to say goodbye to Winter. Letting Jaune cure her hopelessly and seeing as he and Weiss get killed before Cinder gets to her. Or she can impose herself and do what she thinks is best. To get the chance to choose who is gonna take the powers. To get the chance to mend a conflict with a friend and to wish her goodbye.
So, thematically Pyrrha and Penny's last choices are tragic, but they convey who they are through them. Let's quickly look at the other examples you gave, instead:
Ren's rush agaisnt the Nucklevee is a condemnation of revenge, rather than self-sacrifice. Ren is losing to his anger and needs Nora to calm down, before he hurts himself and others.
Jaune's suicidal charge at Cinder is just like Ren's (Ren's foreshadows Jaune's). Still, the whole point is that Jaune is trying to imitate Pyrrha, but is doing it wrong. Pyrrha sacrifices herself out of a strong sense of self and for the sake of others. Jaune tries to sacrifice himself out of self-hate and he does so selfishly. His actions disrupt everyone's rhytm and team-work. Weiss finds herself in danger precisely because of this. She has to go against Vernal on her own because all the others are scattered and disorganized and this is a consequence of Jaune's charge. Not only that, but Cinder refuses Jaune's attempt to play hero by killing Weiss to spite him. It is only at this point that Jaune starts acting selflessly and ends up saving Weiss. It is at this point he is actually acting like Pyrrha would.
Winter tells Penny her life has not worth. I don't think this needs much more elaboration. Winter's sense of self is so frail, she lets Ironwood decide things for her, even if she knows he is wrong.
So, the dychotomy in my opinion is not sacrifice good or bad. Rather it is are you ascending :P or are you regressing? Are you affirming who you are? Or are you getting undone.
Which is what I hope the next episode makes clear with Ruby tbh. Her drinking the tea is the result of a gesture of negation of the self. She has no idea of who she wants to become, so she doesn't know what to choose. Right now, she seems to be choosing to be Summer because she thinks this will make her enough. Still, this is bound to backfire and I hope she realizes it is not through negating who she is she can truly ascend, but rather through accepting it. We'll see though :)

rwby rambling under the cut AHDASDSAK
altering that statement cos i did skim through it again, and it really isnt as bad as i remember but it still has information that is just wrong, like the plot of convenience point he makes, about fights loosely connecting to one another, when that isn't really the case? and he makes a point about how when there isnt a fight going on, the show is doing nothing valuable with the extra time. when that isnt true, if you rewatch v1-3 the plot is mostly being driven forward? or foreshadowed/set-up
a good example is season 2 being largely written off as full of nothing, when mountain glenn or whatever spends a large chunk going into the motivations of each of team rwby, what drives them to be there in the first place, particularly highlighting ruby's simple desire of wanting to help others, which is expanded upon later. and also shown how yang sees ruby's motivations compared to her own. it's a good character building segment for team rwby. also this season introduces penny and kind of establishes the kinda person ironwood is as well
season 1 also has ozpin's advice to ruby, his projection onto her, but also why he chose her as the leader of team rwby, because he sees a bit of his old self in her(or in ozma's case). ANYWAYS. thats important too. there ARE things that are important inbetween fight scenes, and there /always/ has been. you just need to rewatch the show.
and obviously there are things that werent planned from the start, but ozpin being uhh..the Way he is, salem, all of that stuff- that was there from the start, so this scene hits different upon rewatch
the only ones i can see that for is season 1 because there is a lot of clumsy execution in that season, which makes sense but doesnt make it any less egregious. cos i agree on the part where pyrrha is explaining things to jaune that are already established (what a semblance is, and characters being surprised by her semblance (which they should already know.. ))
the bad exposition for the earlier volumes i agree with, its a really rough start and can be kinda cringy to rewatch at times
but if youre going to talk abt rwby you kind of need to talk about Everything. where its at right now, and how it improved. which he doesnt, he touches on season 6 a bit to ramble about the adam vs yang and blake fight-- talks about how annoying it is that characters pause to speak as if the fight isnt a more character driven one than a flashy one, dramatic pauses to talk/explain in the middle of fights are also not that uncommon in the anime he talks about- he talks about jojo in here, which pauses fights to dump about how powers work a LOT
as much as i'd like to go through the video and talk abt how i feel abt every point, it's actually not as scathing as i remember. still wrong about things tho, and only talks about 1-3 mostly without touching on anything else. the anime homework segment is what i remembered the most i think...
and the complaints about the inconsistent worldbuilding i can definitely understand, it is frustrating that things aren't clear cut explained to you in the show, like the differences between magic and semblances. but i think the point is that semblances can Be magic, sometimes, but not the other way around. s'least how i see it. that stuff doesnt bother me as much though so its fine if it botehrs someone else
i geuss the thing that frustrates me the most is this insistence that rwby isn't character driven, or at least the characterization is poorly handled, because it really isn't. at least for the main four, and some others- and again they improve on this later. i would not be as into rwby as i am if the character writing was like. horrid
for season 1 i can get that but even as early as s2 they start to dig a little deeper, and now at season 9 so many of our main cast have been dug into a little, in ways i find really satisfying. and like, the finale of season 5 is still one of my favorites, behind season 7 ofc (oscar pine bias) but yang's conversation with her mother, nothing ending in a fight between them just the power of her words- it's a relationship that has some complexity to it. the point im making is that there are so much more amazing scenes that just are not shown at all or glossed over completely, the writing can be really good at times its why im still here!! IDK!!!!!! i guess im Crazy

BELLADINA VS ARC
Penny: (Snoring in bed)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Blake: (Shaking Saphron's hand) It's good to meet you~!
Saphron: (Shaking Blake's hand) You too~!
Blake: (Thinking) Is she a threat to my family? I'll find out everything tonight!.
Saphron: (Thinking) Is my brother in danger? I'll determine that tonight!.
Blake: If you don't mind a simple meal, I can make you something to eat quickly!
Saphron: No. You don't need to.
Saphron: As if I'd ever eat anything you make.
Jaune: Saph, please! You don't need to be so mean!
Saphron: I-I'm not being mean!
Saphron: Dammit! I'm letting my emotions get the better of me! Rrgh, that creep's interrogation earlier is getting me all worked up!. I'll need to be careful so I can keep playing as the loving sister at the embassy!.
Jaune: (Thinking) I need to be careful so I can keep playing the loving househusband I need to be! My career as a contract assassin depends on me pretending to be Blake's husband!.
Jaune: Thank you for the lovely flowers, Saph.
Saphron: You're welcome but let me be absolutely clear when I say this. I do not recognize this marriage. You've been married a whole year without telling me! If you want me to give my blessing, you better have a damn good explanation!
Blake: That's a fair request. You asked me to put my faith in you, Jaune, so that's what I'm going to-
Jaune: I... I FORGOT.
Saphron: You... You're saying the reason you haven't told me for more than a year is because...
Jaune: I forgot! Yes!
Saphron: Then what about a few weeks ago, when you said you were taking someone to the party? Why didn't you tell me then?
Jaune: Oh, uh, w-well... I FORGOT THAT I FORGOT TO TELL YOU.
Blake: ...
Jaune: ...
Saphron: ...
Saphron: Well, if that's what happened, I can't really argue with you, can I?
Blake: SHE BOUGHT THAT?!.
Saphron: I swear, you can be so scatter-brained, Jaune!
Jaune: I'm sorry!
Blake: Is... Is this normal for the Arc family?
Blake: Dinner is served.
Saphron: Way to interrupt my conversation, jerk. But I can't say that. I'll just have to keep on a smiling face, even when I choke down her awful... Her awful...
Jaune: W-Whoa, Saph! I know Blake's cooking is good, but you don't have to wolf it down like that!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jaune: And then, after a couple dinner, we decided to get married.
Saphron: Where did you have dinner? How often? What did you eat each time? What restaurants and at what point did these immoral rendezvous become an official relationship? What's the real reason you two got married?
Blake: Why does it feel like I'm being interrogated?.
Saphron: What do you two call each other when you're alone?
Blake: Uh... Jaune?
Saphron: JAUNE?! BUT THAT'S WHAT I CALL HIM!. THAT'S OUR THING!.
Saphron: A-And what do you call he, Jaune?! Bee?! Blakey-Boo?!
Jaune: Wh-What?! Er, well...
Saphron: IT'S BLAKEY-BOO, ISN'T IT?! (Slamming down wine)
Jaune: N-No! It's just Blake! Saph, maybe you've had enough to drink...
Blake: Here, I brought some water.
Saphron: Grr! (Chugs more wine)
Blake: I need to divert! Divert!.
Blake: So, uh, Jaune tells me you work at the embassy. That's pretty fancy work, isn't it?
Jaune: Yeah! Pyrrha said you were in Little Menagerie recently!
Saphron: Yeah, but it was just for work. But it's such a beautiful city, I wish I could take you one day.
Blake: ...Little Menagerie, right? Off the south coast of Mistral? I remember studying abroad there when I was a student. I remember eating at some wonderful restaurants there.
Saphron: Oh, well, the next time you go, you should try a little cafe there called "The Orange". It's run by this sweet old woman who makes a delicious stew.
Blake: Oh, I think I've eaten there, too! Is that wine also from Little Menagerie?
Blake: "Yes, that wine...".
Saphron: Yeah, that wine...
Blake: "I bought from this shop on Taurus Street.".
Saphron: I bought from this shop on Taurus Street.
Blake: I hope it wasn't too expensive.
Blake: Let me guess... "200 Lien".
Saphron: Well, it's a little pricey, but I think it's a good deal to get quality wine for 200 Lien.
Blake: I knew it.
Blake: Well, I'm glad you were willing to share it with us.
Blake: I thought this conversation sounded familiar. This is the exact same dialogue from the Atlesian Ace Operatives hand-book. It's used as a way to set up a dialogue about traveling abroad to fictional locations. The Orange was renamed The Tangerine after the old woman retired from back problems and put her son in charge. And that bottle of wine comes from a winery that's in the middle of a drought streak, so it's actually 300 Lien. Everything she's said has been a lie, and if she has access to the Ace-Ops hand-book, then her job at the embassy isn't something low-level. Saphron Arc, if that is her real name, is a high-ranking officer for Atlas.
Jaune: See, Saph? Blake's such a nice sister-in-law, isn't she-
Saphron: (Slams her hand on the table) I... already told you... I DON'T RECOGNIZE THIS MARRIAGE.
Jaune: S-Saph! Don't be rude!
Saphron: You're right about one thing, Blake; it is a pricey bottle, but I can afford it, because I have a wonderful brother who inspired me to work hard for my career! I still remember a time I was too sick to work, and my brother would come home covered in blood just to give me my favorite meals. So I could have my medicine to stand on my own two feet today. And I'll do whatever it takes to keep my baby brother safe. Can you say the same, Blake Belladina? Huh, Blakey-Boo?!
Blake: ...I love your brother with all my heart. I care about her just as much as you do, and our daughter loves her, too. She's an important member of the Belladina family. And I don't care if it's knives or bullets or a high-yield bomb, I WILL protect Jaune from any harm!
Saphron: ...
Saphron: I... I could protect him from knives and bullets, but a high-yield bomb?! I... I couldn't do that... Could I?.
Saphron: ...Prove it.
Jaune: Huh?
Saphron: Kiss my brother right now and prove that your love is real.
Blake: If that's what it'll take to prove it to you, then fine. Jaune, let's kiss each other, just like we do every day.
Jaune: HUH?!
Blake: (Leans in) Shall we?
Jaune: W-WAIT! (Grabs bottle, Chugs what's left) Awright... Lez do thiz...
Blake: (Whispering) Hey, if you don't want to...
Jaune: (Whispering) Nono, this iz my famly too...
Saphron: Hey! Why are you both whispering?! If you aren't a real couple, then stop embarrassing yourselves and- (Shink!)
Jaune: (Barely missed her head) Sh-Shaddup, Saph! Imma show you the depths of our love! (Leans into Jaune) Close your eyes, darling... I'm coming in...
Saphron: Y-YOU'RE ACTING SO LEWD!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saphron: Jaune, you should be out there making some other girl happy, not your stuck-in-bed-all-day sister.
Jaune: It's okay, Saph! I don't mind it. Besides, even if you're the only girl I make happy, then that's enough for me.
Saphron: Oh? Was that a marriage proposal?
Jaune: Hee hee! Maybe! If you need me to, I'll take care of you the rest of my life!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saphron: WAIT! NO! I STILL NEED YOU TO TAKE CARE OF-
Jaune: I CAN'T DO IT! IT'S SO EMBARRASSING! (Swings fist out)
Saphron: (Cracked in the face by Jaune, Slams into the wall)
Blake: (Slack-jawed, Watching this all happen)
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Penny: (Sits up) AGH! A... A bomb?
Penny: ...
Penny: Zzz...
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Saphron: (Sniffles) I... I get it now... You were so passionate to smear your lips all over this creep's face...
Blake: L-Listen, you're drunk and you're bleeding... Maybe you should-
Saphron: For now, Blake Belladina, my brother's lips are all yours.
Jaune: (Punches) SAPH, STOP!
Saphron: I've let you win this round, Blake Belladina...
Jaune: S-Saph, you're swaying!
Blake: You're both swaying... Are Arcs just naturally light-weight drinkers?.
Jaune: Should I call Terra and have her come pick you up?
Saphron: Please don't drag my wife into this...
Blake: (Smiles, Holds them both)
Saphron: What are you smiling about? Are you enjoying my misery?
Blake: No, not at all. I'm just enjoying the love only two siblings who took good care of each other can share. We should work together to give Jaune the happy life he deserves.
Saphron: ...Don't touch me! (Pushes away) I'll find some way you tricked my brother into marrying you! And if I find out you made him shed a single tear, I'LL HAVE YOU EXEC- I-I mean, I'll... JUST REMEMBER THAT! (Runs away)
Jaune: Be safe on your way home!
Blake: Was she about to say, "She'll have me executed"?.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Penny: G'morging...
Jaune: Good morning, Penny! I'm sorry you missed Saph last night.
Penny: Saph... Who's Saph?
Jaune: Huh? But I thought you were excited to meet her?
Blake: The way Jaune's sister acted was bad enough...
Penny: Oh! Auntie!
Blake: ...but finding out she's actually a member of the secret police just makes things all the more complicated.
Penny: (Thinking) Secret police?!.
Penny: ...What's that?.
SECRET + POLICE = EXCITING NEW THING!!!
Penny: (Sobbing) Why couldn't I see her?!
Blake: I... I didn't know she'd mean so much to you...

Volume 3, Volume 8, and Stakes
So I’ve always been vocal about my criticisms of Volume 8, and I thought I’d hone in and focus specifically on the Fall of Beacon vs the Fall of Atlas, and why the former sticks the landing when the latter doesn’t.
By rights, the destruction of two cities and the displacement of their citizens should be the higher stakes finale of the two, but for some reason RT’s description of V8′s final episodes as “traumatic” don’t stick to me. I find that this is for multiple reasons.
Lack of Stakes
The primary reason Volume 8 seems to fall flat is its lack of stakes. Volume 3 was a truly ‘traumatic’ event in the series, whilst Volume 8′s finale mostly pays lip service to the concept but doesn’t fully commit. Let’s break down exactly what was lost from the protagonists’ angle in each climax:
Volume 3:
Tumblr media
Pyrrha, a character who had been in the show from the start and was one of the immediate secondary cast.
Penny, another character who had been in the show, since late volume 1.
Yang’s Arm, temporarily robbing one of the primary characters of their health and/or ability to fight.
Team RWBY, with the team fully disbanded by the end of the Volume.
Ozpin, the headmaster and protector figure - with his loss there’s an increased vulnerability for the cast.
Beacon, the primary setting and safe place for the cast.
The Fall Maiden
Volume 8:
Tumblr media
Penny, while a popular character, had already died once reducing the stakes and impact of her demise.
The Relics, which are important but ultimately MacGuffins and the villains already had one of them.
Vine Zeki, one of the Ace Ops, arguably the one with the least focus and a rival force to the heroes up until an episode before the finale.
Atlas and Mantle. Like Beacon they were the primary setting, but were constantly portrayed as a troubled society - leaving the question of whether they are worth saving in the back of the viewer’s mind. Robyn even refers to them as a ‘chunk of land’.
“Team RWBY & Jaune” - almost not even worth putting on the list as the viewer instantly knows these "deaths” are moot and won’t stick.
It’s clear that Volume 3 cut much deeper with its choice of character deaths & repercussions, while Volume 8 took a much lighter path, killing off a character who had already died once (Penny) and another who had barely any presence in the show to begin with (Vine). V8 also committed to things telegraphed from a mile away such as the relics. Let me stress that I believe in sticking to your guns even if fans predict it, but it does neuter the impact somewhat - and do fans really care about the relics most of the time?
Plus no one really predicted Beacon to fall so violently, while we all knew that Atlas would drop the minute we found out A) it was a floating city and B) the staff of creation was holding it up.
Antagonists
To start, let’s do the same thing as before, except with what the villains lost.
Volume 3:
Cinder - though there was a big, bold question mark over her fate.
Roman Torchwick - A popular but obvious arc villain who outright states how small-time he is.
Volume 8:
James Ironwood - Volume 8 makes the decision to triple down on making James an unlikable antagonist to the point he’s the primary threat despite Salem having made landfall. By the time his death arrives, I’m pretty sure a lot of viewers are sick of his rapid decline and him overall.
Arthur Watts - One of Salem’s top lieutenants, killed unceremoniously like Ironwood.
Hazel Rainart - Another of Salem’s top lieutenants, killed off after a wobbly ‘redemption’ arc.
Monstro - Salem’s secondary base of operations and the crux of her invasion.
Emerald Sustrai - Switches sides (to me her arc feels heavily truncated and a little unearned, likely due to how much v8 threw at the wall)
The Hound - Supposedly the biggest Grimm threat and slasher villain in the show so far, killed almost comedically by a statue.
Jacques Schnee - With ne’er an actual confrontation between him and Weiss.
Neopolitan - Betrayed by Cinder and cast into the void, though like RWBYJ her supposed “death” is transparent.
Volume 3 is almost a unanimous victory for the villains, and what losses they do have are nixed by the introduction of Salem at the end of the finale - her arrival implies that anything her side suffered is small-time now that the Big Bad is here.
Meanwhile, Volume 8 significantly trims down a bunch of long-standing major antagonists to the point Salem only has three lieutenants left. Where the losses are weighted on the heroes’ side in Volume 3, Volume 8 has a much more even balance. Compounded by the severity of Salem’s losses compared to the protagonists’, she basically came off worse.
Now let’s consider the lack of consistency on who’s supposed to be the villain of the volume. Here’s a sheet of who the main antagonist is of each episode in Volume 3 contrasted with 8:
Tumblr media
While Volume 3 has Cinder as a consistent primary villain practically the entire time - Mercury, Emerald, Roman and Adam all working to fulfil her plan even when they’re focused upon - Volume 8 has no less than three antagonists battling for control of the narrative. Salem, who is supposed to be the main villain of the show, is killed nine episodes into the volume. She gets better, but taking her out for so long and posting Ironwood and Cinder back into the position of primary villain makes it feel like the series could just as easily function without her.
It’s clearly a method to A) Have Emerald switch sides, B) Kill Hazel instead of doing anything with him, C) Reveal the power of Ozpin’s cane, but I can’t help but find the concept of killing off the Main Villain of the Entire Show In Episode Nine So You Can Focus On The Secondary Villains For The Climax utterly ridiculous. There’s no world in which it shouldn’t have been the opposite way around.
And while Volume 3 kills off a villain like Roman whose role in the show was effectively complete and introduce a roster of more threatening ones in Volume 4, Volume 8 can’t wait to sweep Hazel and Watts under the rug - leaving them both feeling like characters the writers made, promptly decided they wanted to do nothing with for four years, then killed off callously when they had potential to make Salem’s team a true threat.
I’m running out of steam now, but that’s my general thoughts on why specifically the finale and ultimate outcome of Volume 8 fall flat in comparison to Volume 3′s, and why this synopsis for Volume 9 feels... unjustified at best:

Note
Here’s a tough question. Top 3 favorite and least favorite things about each RWBY volume?
Sorry for the delay, this is something I've had to really think about.
V1 Faves
The initiation/Nevermore fight. Let's be honest this is where these legends started.
Blake & Yang meeting for the first time
Weiss and Blake coming to terms with each other
V`1 least faves
The animation. I know it was Poser, they had no budget, etc. That doesn't make it any easier to watch
That one line from Yang about boys that has haunted the discourse for nearly a decade.
TBH barely anyone had a character any deeper than surface level
V2 Faves
Yang talking to Blake in Burning The Candle. This is where their relationship became more than partners, deeper than just friendship
The talk between Weiss, Blake and Yang at Mountain Glenn. Something that would be directly referenced much later in V9
"Best Day Ever" - the food fight between RWBY and JNPR is just big dumb fun
V2 least faves
Jaune and his pursuit of Weiss. Obnoxious to the extreme.
Sun - that's it
"Breach" in general was kind of a mess and really was there to have a giant fight scene.
V3 Faves
"Heroes And Monsters" - It feels weird listing something so horrible and tragic as a favorite thing but what happened between Yang, Blake and Adam in this chapter would define these characters going forward all the way until almost the end of V6 and was a significant point in Blake & Yang's relationship
Also from "Heroes And Monsters" - Velvet unleashing Anesidora with "I May Fall" blasting is still so amazing to this day.
Yang being framed for injuring Mercury and Blake deciding to trust in her.
(I really could go on about V3 with many more positives.)
V3 least faves
SSSN vs NDGO - I DON'T CARE
Might be controversial but Pyrrha's death. I understood the narrative need for it but it doesn't mean I liked it
Same for Penny
V4 Faves
Meeting Blake's parents. Ghira and Kali are treasures.
The fight with Tyrian
Yang getting her new arm and starting her healing process
(Honorable mention to Blake, with Sun's help, starting to understand that sometimes you have to let people in and it's THEIR choice to want to be in your life. Also honorable mention to Ruby's letter in "No Safe Haven")
V4 least faves
Tai's "advice" both in "Family" and "One Step Forward..."
Sun. (I didn't start to be able to tolerate him unti V5)
Not nearly enough Yang
V5 Faves
Yang and Ruby reuniting - I always cry
Weiss' talk with Yang in "Alone Together" (which is also when I'm convinced she realized that Yang loved Blake)
"Yang...?" *Dumbfounded stare from Yang
(Honorable mention to Yang reading Raven for filth)
V5 least faves
The pacing wasn't great and yeah the big fight was lackluster
While the animation was fine the colors always felt very muted to me
Lionheart (not that I resented his use in the story, I just hate the dude)
V6 faves:
The Bees Vs Adam (was I gonna say anything else?)
The Brunswick Arc (why is CRWBY so good at horror?)
The fight with the Leviathan.
V6 least faves:
These are mostly really minor complaints
Dee and Dudley - annoying
The big lore dump, while not BAD was a LOT
Oscar vanishing and getting a new set of clothes off camera not that I care that much but I think it could have been handled better
V7 Faves
The makeovers, with the possible exception of Wess I thought everyone looked great and TBH Yang never looked better
The Bees getting ready to go on a date
Nora spilling the tea ABOUT the Bees
(Honorable mention to RBY standing by Weiss when she confronted Jacqass. Also honorable mention to Yang/Blake VS Elm/Vine)
V7 least faves (not writing critical just characters getting on my nerves)
Harriet is annoying
The AceOps being Ironwood's unthinking lapdogs
Ironwood coming out as a complete dumbass.
V8 Faves
Beeunion 2.0
Yang, Jaune and Ren infiltrating Salem's HQ and the fight that ensues. Especially Yang getting to talk smack to Salem and blowing her tits off.
Penny frying Cinder
(Honorable mention to Maria kicking Neo's ass)
V8 least faves
Ironwood continues to be a complete and total dumbass
Ren being a jerk. Thankfully he gets over it
Yang's fall. (not bad on a value level but it HURT)
V9 Faves:
The Bees confession - absolutely perfect. Could not be improved on
The fight scene in Rude, Red and Royal
Ruby getting her groove back and showing CC just how powerful she really is.
V9 least faves: (and I'm allowing for what I know was a difficult production)
We could have used at least another two chapters because some scenes and transitions were way too brief and as a result didn't have the emotional impact they should have
We didn't get the prologue that was shown at RTX
Minor complaint but in Chapter 1 I wish Blake had been shown as being a bit more worried about Yang since she saw her "die"
Wow, this was a LOT!
