The Jesus and Mary Chain's Jim Reid on returning to Glasgow for BBC 6 Music, albums in the pipeline and not throwing punches at brother William
24 MAR 2017
The Jesus and Mary Chain frontman Jim Reid talks 'mental' Glasgow crowds, more albums in the pipeline and why he won't be bear hugging brother William on stage any time soon.
News that the BBC 6 Music Festival was coming to Glasgow sparked a frenzy - news that The Jesus and Mary Chain were headlining had fans hovering over a keyboard from the second tickets went on sale.
The iconic 80s group from East Kilbride will play the Friday (March 24) night at the Barrowlandsalongside Ride, Warpaint and Sleaford Mods - to a sold out crowd, no less.
It’s something of a homecoming, says frontman Jim Reid, gearing himself up for another “mental” Glasgow crowd.
He told Glasgow Live: “It’s always good to play the Barrowlands. The audience in Glasgow are always up for it - there’s a difference there. It’s great to see the crowd going mental.
“We don’t tour that often - but whenever we do, Glasgow is always included.”
It’s about as enthusiastic as The JAMC frontman gets - still oozing that cool, hate-the-world vibe unleashed in the form of Pyschocandy in 1985.
The debut album has been high on the agenda for recent Mary Chain tours - but with a new album due out the same day as the Barrowlands gig, Jim says to expect more from the set this time around.
“We will be playing songs from the new album [Damage and Joy] but we’re also aware that people won’t have it yet, so there will be a bunch of Mary Chain songs that people are familiar with. It won’t be Psychocandy heavy either - it’s stuff from throughout our career.”
Jim added: “The new one is just a Mary Chain record - anyone who likes us shouldn’t be disappointed. It’s got the various styles of the Mary Chain throughout the decade and each album is, I think, represented in some way.”
Damage and Joy has been a long time coming for JAMC fans, following Munki back in 1998 - so what was it like heading back into the studio?
“It’s strange but also strangely familiar. The process hasn’t really changed. It’s gotten quicker with technology - before you’d spend a whole day trying an idea that may or may not work, and nowadays the same process takes half an hour.
“The songs have been written over a period of several years so they were already there. You’re always writing songs so we had some to sift through.
“If this record does well and there seems any demand for another one then we probably will do it.”
It all sounds promising for Mary Chain fans - if Jim and brother William Reid can stay together long enough to put out another album.
The pair have a famously turbulent relationship - calling themselves the original Gallagher brothers - but things are looking rosy in the family at the moment.
“There was a bonding over recording the album and it seems like things are pretty good between us,” said Jim. “I don’t think there’s going to be any bear hugs or kisses on stage - but at least we won’t be swinging punches at each other.”
The vocalist is looking forward to sharing a bill with Ride, including former Mary Chain drummer Loz - and to seeing Sleaford Mods live for the first time.
On what it’s like to be name-checked as an influence to so many young bands, he added: “That’s what it was always about, to pass things on to another generation. There’s lessons to be learned.
“Anyone can make music and if you can learn a thing or two from what we’ve done then great - I love that.
“There’s always a lot of young people there when we play and I think that’s to do with the internet and younger bands name-checking the Mary Chain - it works out well for us.”
As for a headline slot at perhaps the biggest festival of the year here in Glasgow, Jim added: “It gets more enjoyable the older you get - there’s less to prove.”

The Jesus and Mary Chain "Never Understand" (Peel Session) - Record of the Day
The Jesus and Mary Chain “Never Understand” (Peel Session) – Record of the Day
The essential Jesus and Mary Chain albums are Pyschocandy, Darklands, Automatic, and the compilation albums Barbed Wire Kisses, and The Complete John Peel Sessions. The definitive versions of some of their LP classics are found on The Complete John Peel Sessions, and this is one of them. From their first ever Peel session in 1984. The comments on the page are spot on and reflect my feelings too:…

My precious Russian and Japanese TANKS. Big Muff isn't vintage (2007) but the Shin Ei Companion FY-2 is a legendary and gnarly fuzz box from the 1970s. Used on Radiohead's "Myxomatosis" and extensively on The Jesus and Mary Chain debut album "Pyschocandy".

In The Rock 11/18/1985: Scotland’s favourite sons, Jim and William Reid, release their debut LP, Jesus and Mary Chain’s Pyschocandy, to five star reviews. They were the best to happen to Fuzz pedal sales since The Stooges. #JAMC #JesusAndMaryChain #Shoegazers #RockHonorRoll https://ift.tt/3kFjUh6
