The Eternal Recurrence of Adventure Time
youtube
With the conclusion of season 1 of Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake, this video seeks to explore the show's relationship with the philosophical concept of Eternal Recurrence, the notion that everything stays, right where we left it. But does everything truly stay without changing? Come along with me to find out!

Vegetarianism, Veganism, and the Path of the Masters - Spiritual Awakening Radio Podcast
Tumblr media
Traditionally, Sant Mat and the yoga philosophy have advocated the lacto-vegetarian diet: abstinence from meat, fish, fowl, and eggs, but allowed dairy. Vegan means complete abstinence from all animal products and strictly adhering to a plant-based diet: no dairy, eggs, or meat of any kind, or products made from animals. Based on the current cruel practices of the dairy industry in India and around the world that violate the principle of ahimsa or non-violence, plus all the scores of medical studies showing that dairy consumption adversely affects our health and well-being, I believe if they were here today, the classic Saints such as Mahavira, Guru Kabir, Guru Nanak, Tukarama, Ravidas, Tulsi Das, Namdev, Dariya Sahib, etc...  would not only be advocating a vegetarian diet, but a vegan diet. These days, many are making this transition to vegan, including a growing percentage of those following Sant Mat. This is the compassionate direction that the vegetarian movement is headed in. Vegetarianism is going vegan!
In the East as well as in the West, the Gnostics and other advanced mystics: those serious practitioners of soul travel, inner Light and Sound meditation, have universally adhered to a plant-based diet. It’s hard to reach more subtle states of tranquility in meditation on an animal flesh diet based on the suffering of other beings. "A man of spiritual intensity does not eat corpses." (George Bernard Shaw)
Today a satsang edition of Spiritual Awakening Radio about the spiritual and ethical reasons for going veg, or better still: vegan. There are readings from Pythagoras, Kabir, Swami Sant Sevi Ji Maharaj, Darshan Singh, Kirpal Singh, Sawan Singh, Diet and Spirituality, by Dona Kelley (from Lotus Leaves), and... a document called, "My Visit to a Dairy Farm -- The Reality of Dairy Cruelty -- the Final Destination of Dairy Cows is the Slaughterhouse", published by Pravin K. Shah of the Jaina Education Committee of Jainism (the Vegan Jain movement.)

Portrait of Pythagoras by Bruce Pennington 2010
"Alexander in his Successions of Philosophers says that he found in the Pythagorean memoirs the following tenets as well. The principle of all things is the monad or unit; arising from this monad the undefined dyad or two serves as material substratum to the monad, which is cause; from the monad and the undefined dyad spring numbers; from numbers, points; from points, lines; from lines, plane figures; from plane figures, solid figures; from solid figures, sensible bodies, the elements of which are four, fire, water, earth and air; these elements interchange and turn into one another completely, and combine to produce a universe animate, intelligent, spherical, with the earth at its centre, the earth itself too being spherical and inhabited round about. There are also antipodes, and our “down” is their “up.”
Light and darkness have equal part in the universe, so have hot and cold, and dry and moist; and of these, if hot preponderates, we have summer; if cold, winter; if dry, spring; if moist, late autumn. If all are in equilibrium, we have the best periods of the year, of which the freshness of spring constitutes the healthy season, and the decay of late autumn the unhealthy. So too, in the day, freshness belongs to the morning, and decay to the evening, which is therefore more unhealthy. The air about the earth is stagnant and unwholesome, and all within it is mortal; but the uppermost air is ever-moved and pure and healthy, and all within it is immortal and consequently divine.
The sun, the moon, and the other stars are Gods; for, in them, there is a preponderance of heat, and heat is the cause of life. The moon is illumined by the sun. Gods and men are akin, inasmuch as man partakes of heat; therefore God takes thought for man. Fate is the cause of things being thus ordered both as a whole and separately. The sun’s ray penetrates through the aether, whether cold or dense – the air they call cold aether, and the sea and moisture dense aether – and this ray descends even to the depths and for this reason quickens all things. All things live which partake of heat – this is why plants are living things – but all have not soul, which is a detached part of aether, partly the hot and partly the cold, for it partakes of cold aether too. Soul is distinct from life; it is immortal, since that from which it is detached is immortal.
Living creatures are reproduced from one another by germination; there is no such thing as spontaneous generation from earth. The germ is a clot of brain containing hot vapour within it; and this, when brought to the womb, throws out, from the brain, ichor, fluid and blood, whence are formed flesh, sinews, bones, hairs, and the whole of the body, while soul and sense come from the vapour within."

One Piece Chapter 1075 - Initial Thoughts
Tumblr media
And we're back for Among Us: Egghead edition
The crew are trapped within the labophase, but something is attacking in the shadows
With the marine fleet and a gorosei already creeping in, what more will Oda add to the powder keg?
Spoilers for the chapter, support the Official Release also
The cover page is Vegapunk getting an audience with the Gorosei, given Saturn's comments prior I guess this was their only meeting face-to-face
Picking up with Pythagoras' attack, Shaka tries to scan the area
Something though attacks the Den Den Mushi to wipe out the cameras
Luffy's sensing something amiss too, comms are down
We have a map, which means we'll be spending a lot of time in this place, fortunately it is a smaller map than Onigashima
Tower A Floor C has Nami, Edison and Brook
...and whatever jewels Nami claims despite Edison's protests
Nami got so carried away with the fact that they can make diamonds that she left her bag full of loot...that may come back at some point
Downstairs in floor 2, Robin, Chopper and Atlas investigate
Turns out that people can change their faces in Egghead, so we might be seeing some deception at play, we have already seen fake faces back with that CP agent who attacked Morgans
Robin ever macabre sees floating organs and suspects it's Vegapunk
Alas it's not, but now Chopper can gush about the fact that the island can grow organs
On the same floor, Luffy goes to Shaka asking why comms are down
He's not out of breath anymore which is reassuring
But having seen all the cameras be taken down one by one, it's clear there's someone or something in the lab
In the B tower's second floor, (the left tower), Sanji is simping over Stussy while Jinbe ignores it
They're in the weapons manufacturing floor, probably not the ideal place for them compared to Nami and Chopper's placement
In Tower C floor 3, Usopp, Franky, Lilith and York investigate
Lilith's big gun is a 'bubble gun' which is made to deflect attacks
The group find Pythagoras' downed body, which btw does exonerate Lilith from at least performing the act herself
Pythagoras is alive though, since he's just his mini-head
Before Pythagoras can explain what's going on, it becomes visibly apparent given how York is playing with S-Snake
Pretty sure this will probably confirm that S-Snake's powers work on people who find her cute, so people can simmer on that point
York gets stoned, which is concerning since they are acting against Vegapunk orders
Can't be certain but S-Snake may've also blown up York too, hard to tell if that's just her or rubble
But it means that the rest of the four fall down to the floor below
Usopp wasn't told about the hover function I see...
Franky wants to fight, but Lilith points out that the odds are not in their favour, since she (think this is more a 'I means all of Vegapunk' kinda situation) created the Seraphim to be the strongest humans
Back with Luffy, Shaka and Zoro, S-Hawk and S-Bear have shown up
Turns out they were attacking the CP0 agents
Given how Shaka's orders didn't work, Shaka believes that the stella body must've given an order, not sure how that works though since the authority hierarchy didn't go Gorosei -> Vegapunk -> Satellites -> Sentomaru -> Authority Chip, the whole authority stuff is kinda spinning me
That is perhaps by scanlations though, it could be that again Shaka may be referring to 'a Vegapunk' rather than the Stella
Shaka plainly noting that someone is out to get them makes it that now everyone's aware of the Among Us situation
Lucci and Kaku finally awaken to hear that the Seraphim are trying to kill them, so they pitch an unlikely alliance
Oden and Whitebeard had their disgusted faces and I guess that these are Luffy and Zoros XD
Well it looks like we're starting the free-for-all early now
Oda's been setting pieces up, so it's a surprise he turned the Seraphim early before Saturn's arrival (unless he has found a way to order them from within the Labophase in person) but this could lead into the villainous punk situation, turning the oversight of not being able to overwrite orders with the same authority.
At this point Pythagoras, Lilith and Shaka remain most sus in that scenario, however, we saw Lilith and Shaka try to order the Seraphim down, so that may be of influence there. I would suspect S-Shark is still lurking too, probably the one who took out the Den Den Mushi. But we have four Seraphim and five groups, Team Luffy, Team Stussy, Team Nami, Team Chopper, and Team Lilith, so there's a numbers problem still to handle.
Given Lilith's comment though, I am hoping that Franky (and Usopp) surprise her against the Seraphim, perhaps pulling off a win with their own inventive genius. As for the giant bag of jewels I would expect Caribou to perhaps try and swipe that maybe, and Atlas' mention of face-swapping does feel like it will come into play.
As for an alliance, I kinda don't see it, I wouldn't trust releasing Lucci at all in this situation, but the Seraphim targeting them does mean they have to be in motion, I wonder if maybe if it is Saturn doing the order that he's trying to erase evidence CP0's presence?
It's still set up, but we're looking like we're getting to the meat of it.

YU-GI-OH! GX S/I - BLAKE KOSMOS
-- this bio is a work in progress! it is okay to reblog, but keep in mind it will be edited as the character is developed --
gender: masc leaning nonbinary (he/they pronouns)
age: physically 27, chronologically 100+
etymology: blake is a unisex name that can mean either ‘dark’ or ‘pale’, fitting with his dual nature. his last name comes from the greek κόσμος, used by pythagoras for the order of the universe.
appearance: blake has shoulder-length plum colored hair styled in a flipped-out bob, with his bangs swept to the sides. his eyes are spring green, and he is often seen wearing large circular reading glasses. in seasons 1-2, his outfit consists of a variation on the standard osiris red uniform that resembles a lab coat with a black turtleneck underneath. he carries a custom-made duel disk in the shape of a sundial on his right arm. in season 3, he has longer hair, no glasses, and wears robes similar to witch of the black forest.
personality: blake is a highly intelligent and sharp-witted individual, shown to be able to explain complex topics in an easily understood manner. he is also quite analytical and grasps new concepts quickly, although he is somewhat dimwitted when it comes to topics other than astronomy. while his outward appearance is that of a strict professor, he is kind-hearted and patient with his students outside of class. blake is a skilled duelist, able to think on his feet and react quickly to his opponent’s moves, but he greatly prefers to duel for fun than for any greater purpose.
history: blake is the son of a human and a duel spirit, making him a duel spirit able to take human form. during his childhood he often suffered from seizures, leading the people of his village to believe he was suffering from demonic possession. he found solace in the stars, hidden away from the rest of the world to study in an observatory at the edge of the land. while there, he lived under the care of his human mother, who he calls ‘mama’, and the queen of the cosmos, his ‘mom’. eventually, the villagers raided the hidden observatory, the leader of the coup viewing the cosmo queen as unfit to rule due to believing that she had birthed a demon. as she fought off her attackers, the queen begged blake to flee civilization, giving him a deck containing her card form so that she would always be with him in spirit. during his travels, blake eventually met helios, the spirit of the sun. she led him to a laboratory that was hidden from society, much like the old observatory, and introduced him to her apprentice, an alchemist by the name of amnael. blake took refuge in the laboratory and eventually befriended the two, seeing helios as a role model of sorts. he also began to harbor feelings for amnael, who in turn saw him as a divine genius, much like ancient greeks believed of those with epilepsy. while using the stars to foretell fate, blake saw a vision of amnael’s death. unable to stomach the thought of his beloved’s demise, he dove headfirst into research into alternate dimensions and timelines, becoming obsessive at preventing what had been written in the stars.
deck: pre-season 1, blake uses a “the agent” deck, focused on banishing light-attribute monsters from the graveyard in order to summon his ace monster, master hyperion.

Finally, the above 2010 expanded and updated edition of Thomas Stanley's classic commentary on Pythagoras contained in his 1687 The History of Philosophy came my way this past week. The introduction by Henry L. Drake alone is enough to buy this 409 page soft cover tome. The Vatican bust needs no explanation. The 1869 painting Pythagoreans Celebrate Sunrise is by the Russian artist Fyodor Bronnikov.
Pythagoras was considered the first philosopher by the ancient Greeks. His contributions to philosophy, mathematics, esoteric knowledge, music, and the study of the universe are great. He was the first to use the word cosmos. Academics such as the late Carl Sagan and Simon Singh in their respective books Cosmos (1980) and Big Bang: The Origins of the Universe (2004) honor Pythagoras. To me personally, his status is that of a prophet. So, I encourage all to tap into this splendid human being from the past.

The first language of Herodotus
Tumblr media
The 1592 Edition of Herodotus’ Histories edited and printed by Henry II Estienne in Geneva. Source: https://www.ucd.ie/readingeast/essay1.html
“We started our discussion with the problem of how to explain the gulf between the Suda reporting of Herodotus’ acquisition of Ionic in Samos and the ‘Lygdamis inscription’ written in Ionic. When we look at sources without pre-suming that official written documents directly reflect the casual language of the people and that there was a homogenous sphere of the Ionic dialect, we reach the simple conclusion that Herodotus used the Halicarnassian Ionic when he was young, but later acquired the ‘authentic’ Ionic (‘authentic’ at least from the view -point of Photius) in Samos, which was a more appropriate place to study it; we are no longer bound to rule out one of the two testimonies, but can accept both of them with slight modification.
How did the languages in Halicarnassus evolve over the passage of time? The Greek colonists spoke Doric there as well as in other neighbouring Dorian cities several generations before Herodotus, but gradually adopted the Ionic dialect from their Ionian neighbours after or before Halicarnassus was expelled from the Dorian league. At the same time their language could have been altered by the indigenous Carian language through casual interaction. The admixture of names and the tradition of colonisation imply intermarriage or close friendship between Greeks and Carians from early on, perhaps from the foundation of the city, and the joint council mentioned in the ‘Lygdamis inscription’ supports their cohabitation in the fifth century, while on the other hand the Carian language was not extinct yet and was still used in and around Halicarnassus of Herodotus’ time.We of course cannot ignore the possibility that the Ionic dialect that flowed in Halicarnassus was already separated by the Carian influence from that of the northern Ionian cities, which were situated in the Lydian language sphere, and that of the islanders, of which Pythagoras might have believed was the lan-guage’s pure form. In such a situation, a new language would have been demanded and created for daily communication, like the examples I have dis-cussed. If we are allowed to define it more precisely, we could name it ‘pidgin’ or ‘creole’ Ionic, or if we hesitate to apply these modern terms to classical studies, we could regard it more simply as a language which was quite different from what we imagine from the text of Herodotus today.
I do not claim here that Herodotus had no opportunity to learn the ‘authentic’ Ionic in Halicarnassus since at least the author of the ‘Lygdamis inscription’ used it. Especially for Herodotus, who, according to the Suda, came from a dis-tinguished family (τῶν ἐπιφανῶν), such an opportunity would have been more available than for others. Yet, as we have accepted the information of the Suda as reliable, it should be assumed that opportunities to acquire the ‘authentic’ Ionic dialect were limited, even for a son of the élite in Halicarnassus.
In the end, we are left to wonder to what extent Herodotus understood the Carian language. Did he know next to nothing, was he as proficient as a native speaker, or did his ability lie somewhere in between? While we unfortunately have insufficient evidence to definitively answer this question, we can say with certainty that the Carian language was much more familiar to him than previous scholars have supposed. This supposition will paradoxically explain why Herodotus was so indifferent to the Carian language: he refers to it only three times in his books (Hdt. 1.171, 172, 8.135), as already mentioned. He generally recorded what looked curious and novel to his eyes (we should remember that he did not record the contemporary history of Halicarnassus either, even the political strife which he was involved in and was expelled as a result of), and the Carian language was so uncompelling a topic for him that he did not think of i tas worth relating in depth.”
Τhe conclusion of the paper of Takuji Abe Herodotus' First Language: The State of Language in Halicarnassus, in  Talanta: Proceedings of Dutch Archaeological and Historical Society, 2015, available on https://www.academia.edu/29492063/Herodotus_First_Language_The_State_of_Language_in_Halicarnassus

The so-called “Lygdamis inscription”, currently at the British Museum. The site of the Museum (https://www.britishmuseum.org/collection/object/G_1868-1025-1 ) describes it as:
Marble slab inscribed in Greek referring to disputes over land in Halikarnassos. The dialect is Ionic and that may have been used for legal documents such as this in the city. The slab was later cut into two parts vertically and used as the jambs of a window.
