More alert, but still a bit cross-eyed.
Good news: histopathology didn't find cancer.
What they found was "inflamed tissues, [...] severe, heterophilic inflammation with abundant bacteria." That isn't very good news.
If it's now resolved in one month with antibiotics we're giving him, we'll do a bacterial DNA sequencing to see what the heck is in there.

Uncharismatic Fact of the Day
Snakes are well known for their long, flexible bodies-- for which they need lots of bones! In fact, snakes have the most bones of any animal; some species may have over 1,800 bones! A lot of these are vertebrae, of which an individual may have between 100-600 depending on the species.

hello it is time for a VERY niche post. join me for... SHL characters as SNAKES!!!!! i tried to find snakes that naturally occur in china or near china, as a terrible added parameter—there's a TON of snakes in china, but i just don't know many so it's terrible bc it added a lot of work for me lol. but i've learned things! and found some cool snakes! so! let's go. pictures of snakes ahead, if that's not your thing, feel free to peace out.
Tumblr media
Wen Kexing - Sinomicrurus macclellandi a coral snake! just a nice boy you know? just a nice, extremely venemous boy with dramatic red coloration. shamless plug for my fic where wkx turns into This Snake.
Tumblr media
Zhou Zishu - Bungarus multicinctus look at this lovely unassuming snake. got some goth-y drama but overall not too bad, right? one of the most venomous land snakes in the world 😌 (also. he and wkx match but like in a complimentary way.)
Tumblr media
Zhang Chengling - Pareas margaritophorus the first thing wikipedia says about this snake is that it is small and harmless. for the first time so far, i am not trying to mislead you. just a little snek boi!!!!!! cute!!!!!! I Want To Hold And Protect Him
Tumblr media
Gu Xiang - Fowlea piscator look i'm gonna be honest. there are not a lot of snakes that are even REMOTELY purple but this one has a little purple whip tongue! also, not venemous but (if it's anything like water snakes in the US) kind of an asshole. apparently pretends to be a cobra. look at her go.
Tumblr media
Cao Weining - Coelognathus radiatus this snake has no thoughts in its head. look at it. i don't mean as a species i mean This One. That's cwn. just sitting there doing a blep. no venom, apparently a defensive sort of dude. cool colors tho!
Tumblr media
Luo Fumeng - Calliophis bivirgatus a different kind of coral snake! i've gone a bit further outside of china for this one but LOOK at how gorgeous it is. how could i not let lfm be this glamorous. also i like the idea that she's a different genus of snake than wkx but still a (venemous) coral snake.
Tumblr media
Liu Qianqiao - Elaphe taeniura gonna be honest here, the common name of this snake in english is the beauty snake (or ratsnake), so i didn't think too much farther. there's a ton of different color morphs of it. look at it, the elegance! she's beauty she's grace she'll constrict you (if you are a small mammal)!
Tumblr media
Xie Wang - Bungarus fasciatus this is a different krait! zzs has MANY bands, xw just has bands. a little brighter colored and more extra than zzs, sliiiightly less deadly, still can very definitely kill you. LOOK at that warning coloration. if i was to pick two characters to DEFINITELY have warning coloration, it WOULD be wkx and xw.
Tumblr media
Du Pusa - Euprepiophis mandarinus this is NOT my best work, but i just thought this snake was really pretty and so i was determined to include it somehow. hence: dps. they are ~secretive~ apparently. also. again. Look At It
Tumblr media
Ye Baiyi - Python bivittatus BIG BOY!!!! ALMOST THE BIGGEST BOY!!!!! does occur in white color morphs in captivity (and like, i guess presumably in the wild? at one point? but i have to imagine that's like. not so much a thing anymore.) also, did i pick the picture that looks the most like a cryptid? of course i did, it's yby. he doesn't want his picture taken. he doesn't want you to know he exists even. leave him alone. where he belongs in his natural habitat.
Tumblr media
Han Ying - Lycodon septentrionalis a shiny pretty boy. a shiny pretty boy who looks very much like a many-banded krait, in fact. however, they're not venemous. hy just looks like zzs. again: LOOK AT THIS GOOD SNEK.
Tumblr media
Jing Beiyuan - Ahaetulla prasina several things here. one, this is an elegant but strange boy (i don't think this shows just how weird this guy's nose looks. it's like someone took a snake's nose and used pliers to stretch it out all pointy). two, FASHION!!! look at those pattens!!!!! a striking example. and three, it looks kind of like wu xi's snakeclet
Tumblr media
Wu Xi - Naja atra he's a cobra. i think this speaks for itself.

Burmese python
Tumblr media
The Burmese python, scientifically known as Python bivittatus, is one of the largest snake species in the world, native to Southeast Asia. They are known for their impressive size, reaching lengths of up to 23 feet (7 meters) and weighing over 200 pounds (90 kilograms). These constrictor snakes have a distinctive pattern of dark blotches outlined in cream or gold on a brown background.
Burmese pythons are skilled hunters, preying on a variety of mammals and birds. They are ambush predators, using their powerful bodies to constrict and suffocate their prey before swallowing it whole. Despite their massive size, they are generally shy and reclusive in the wild.
In recent years, Burmese pythons have become established in the Florida Everglades, where they are considered an invasive species. This population has grown due to pet releases and escapes, causing concerns for native wildlife and ecosystems.
Burmese pythons are popular in the exotic pet trade, although owning one requires careful consideration due to their large size and specific care requirements. They can live for several decades in captivity if provided with proper housing, diet, and veterinary care.

Snake Swag Bracket Round 1
Tumblr media
Here we have a pair of pythons! Ball pythons (Python regius) are also known as royal pythons, and they are hugely popular in the reptile pet trade! Their native habitat is Sub Saharan Africa, from the west in Senegal and Cote D'Ivoire and eastward into Chad, Sudan, and Uganda, but in captivity they can be found all across the world. Reptile keepers love ball pythons for their generally calm, gentle, and inquisitive personalities. When threatened, as their name implies ball pythons will curl themselves up into a ball to try and keep themselves small and safe. One often heard complaint about ball pythons is that they can be picky eaters, sometimes going months at a time without accepting a meal. Dwarf Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus progschai) are a subspecies of Burmese pythons, and can be found on the Indonesian islands of Java, Bali, Sumbawa, and Sulawesi. Dwarf Burmese pythons are a great example of insular dwarfism! Insular dwarfism is when a species evolves to be smaller due to their range being limited to a small environment, and is particularly seen on islands. Dwarf Burmese pythons tend to grow up to around 8 feet in length (tiny compared to mainland Burmese python's length of up to 18 feet!), and while they are still rare in the reptile pet trade they are becoming more popular. Unfortunately, some breeders will sell mainland Burmese pythons as Dwarf Burmese pythons, often leading to the pythons being rehomed or abandoned in the wild when they become much larger than their keeper was expecting.

Largest python ever found in Florida is 18 feet long and weighs a whopping 200 pounds
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The largest Burmese python ever seen in Florida has been discovered, lured out of its hiding place in the Everglades by researchers who used another python as bait, National Geographic reported (opens in new tab).
The gargantuan snake was a female, measuring nearly 18 feet (5.4 meters) long and weighing 215 pounds (97 kilograms) — 30 pounds (13.6 kg) more than the next-largest python ever found in the state. Most Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) that are found in Florida range between 6 and 10 feet (1.8 and 3 m) long, although in their native habitats in Southeast Asia, the snakes commonly reach 18 feet long (5.4 m) and the largest can reach lengths of 20 feet (6 m) or more, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (opens in new tab).
Since being introduced in Florida in the 1970s, the invasive pythons have bred successfully in the southern regions of the state, where they prey on many native birds and mammals, as well as the occasional alligator or pet dog.
Despite being larger than most of Florida’s native snake species, Burmese pythons are extremely difficult to spot within the vast marshlands, woodlands and subtropical forests of the Everglades and adjacent areas. In an effort to reduce these invasive populations by drawing reproductively active females out of hiding, python trackers at the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, a Naples-based organization, implant GPS trackers inside male pythons and then send these “scout snakes” slithering into the wild, according to National Geographic.

“Large reproductive female pythons are very important to remove from these ecosystems,” because they are disproportionately capable of producing many offspring, Sarah Funck, a biologist with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, told National Geographic.
A 12-foot-long (3.7 m) scout snake named Dionysus — nicknamed Dion — served as bait for the record-setting female that the team captured, back in December 2021.
At that time, the team noticed Dion had stationed himself in one particular location near Naples, within the western Everglades’ ecosystem. When they went to check on their scout snake, they found him coiled near a monstrous female; after an intense wrestling match, the researchers managed to wrangle the huge female into a bag, which they then secured in a tub and transported to their research facility. (Dion, meanwhile, survived the encounter and continued scouting for the Conservancy.)
Researcher Ian Bartoszek sifts through dozens of egg follicles while performing a necropsy on the largest female Burmese python ever discovered in Florida. The team counted 122 of these follicles, another record-breaking tally. (Image credit: Photograph by Maggie Steber, National Geographic)
After euthanizing the female snake, the team performed a necropsy on the hefty python. Inside its body, they found a record 122 egg “follicles” — roughly spherical structures that mature into eggs once fertilized. In the snake’s digestive tract, they found bits of fur, clumps of dissolved bone and a chunk of a hoof, evidence that the python’s last meal was an adult white-tailed deer.
Based on similar necropsies conducted in the past, scientists have learned that Burmese pythons prey on an estimated 24 mammal species, 47 bird species and two reptile species in the state of Florida, according to National Geographic.
“These pythons have the ability to totally alter the ecosystem, and I would say they probably already have,” Kristen Hart, an ecologist with the U.S. Geological Survey Wetland and Aquatic Research Center and a collaborator with the conservancy team, told National Geographic.

Eating Snakes Can Help Save The World
The scientists behind this study specifically looked at the health benefits of eating two species of snakes, both raised in farms across Vietnam and Thailand over the course of one year. The species were the Malayopython reticulatus and Python bivittatus, which each consume significantly fewer resources than salmon, cows, pigs, and other common livestock. This is due […]

Long-held myth says Hurricane Andrew sparked Florida's Burmese python problem. Is it true?
Tumblr media
On Aug. 4, hunters in southern Florida will begin a cull of Burmese pythons as part of an annual competition to try and keep the invasive snakes' population in check. Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) are native to southeast Asia, where they slink through thick jungles, grasslands and swamps. But these snakes — which can grow to be more than 18 feet (5.5 meters) long — have also established an invasive population in southern Florida that has decimated local ecosystems, with the snakes devouring prey as large as deer and alligators. Researchers aren't sure exactly how the animals gained a foothold in the state, but one theory is that the invasive snakes got their start in 1992 when Hurricane Andrew destroyed a reptile breeding facility near Miami, setting Burmese pythons loose across the Sunshine State. It is thought Burmese pythons (Python bivittatus) began their invasion of Florida in the late 1970s. (Image credit: Rhona Wise/Getty Images) But many experts say this is likely an oversimplification of the pythons' origin story. In 1992, Andrew slammed into the Miami area as a Category 5 storm, quickly becoming one of the most destructive hurricanes in American history. More than 15 feet (4.5 m) of storm surge flooded the coast and over 10 inches (25 centimeters) of rain dropped in some areas, with wind gusts of about 167 mph (269 kph). Related: Gruesome video reveals the moment a 5-foot alligator corpse was cut from the gut of a dead python According to The New Yorker, a warehouse filled with reptiles in Homestead, Florida, just south of Miami, was destroyed during the storm — and one official told the magazine that he remembered seeing hundreds of Burmese pythons in that warehouse. When the storm destroyed the building, those pythons could have gotten loose in the swampy environs of southeast Florida. Many wild animals did get loose during Andrew's landfall, and some newspapers reported sightings of large snakes in the storm's aftermath. But individual Burmese pythons have reportedly been spotted in the Everglades since at least 1979, with unconfirmed reports throughout the 1980s, according to a 2023 report. The snakes were not commonly sighted in southern Florida until at least 1995. While that's three years after Andrew, the timing and geography of the python invasion don't fit with the storm theory, scientists say. From 1995 to 2000, 11 pythons were sighted or captured in the southwestern part of Everglades National Park — miles away from the destroyed reptile facility in Homestead. "When the population started to grow initially, in the 1990s, most of it was 20 miles away from that facility," Dan Simberloff, an ecologist at the University of Tennessee, told Live Science. It wasn't until after the turn of the millennium that the snakes routinely showed up in the Miami area, near where the warehouse once stood. Based on this geography and the population's growth rates, a 2011 study concluded that the simplest explanation for the Burmese python invasion is that a few individual snakes were released into the southern Everglades sometime before 1985, with the population growing slowly until the 1990s, before skyrocketing upward. Aerial view of Homestead, Florida, after Hurricane Andrew hit.  (Image credit: ClassicStock/GEtty Images) The 2023 report noted that a second, separate introduction of Burmese pythons may have occurred in southwest Florida, closer to Naples. "While some believe Hurricane Andrew in 1992 caused the python problem, Burmese pythons had been detected here prior to that hurricane, as early as 1979. Several introduction events likely occurred in south Florida," a spokesperson for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission told Live Science via email. This doesn't necessarily mean that Hurricane Andrew didn't contribute to the snakes' spread, however — it is possible that some snakes escaped from the pet trade during the storm and joined the feral population, experts said. "If it was a multiple choice question as to how did Burmese pythons get into the south Florida ecosystem and (A) was 'Escaped Pet,' (B) was 'Intentionally Released,' and (C) was 'Meteorological Disturbances' — I would circle (D): 'All of the Above,'" Ian Bartoszek, an environmental scientist with the Conservancy of Southwest Florida, told Live Science. Simberloff said that over the past two decades, research has shown that many invasive species that were thought to be a result of a single introduction were actually introduced in their new habitats multiple times. This includes the brown anole (Anolis sagrei), another reptile invasive to Florida. Florida governor Ron DeSantis launching the 2021 Python Challenge, where members of the public hunt the invasive species for cash prizes.  (Image credit: Joe Raedle/Getty Images) About 17,000 Burmese pythons were imported to the United States between 1970 and 1995 for the pet trade — and with that many pythons coming in, it's entirely plausible that a few will be released by their owners. "People can get tired of having a huge snake," Simberloff said. Bartosek, who kept Burmese pythons as pets growing up in Florida, also noted that the snakes are "escape artists" — and it's possible that some pet snakes could have snuck out of homes and into the warm, prey-filled habitats of southern Florida. It is now mostly illegal to keep the species as a pet in the state. RELATED STORIES —Burmese pythons are helping rats take over Florida's Everglades — and that could help spread disease —Enormous Burmese python killed in Florida Everglades was about to lay 60 eggs —The biggest snake in the world (and 9 other giant serpents) The population of wild Burmese pythons in Florida is unknown, but estimates suggest there could be hundreds of thousands out there. Last year's Python Challenge saw 231 snakes removed from the Everglades, and while initiatives like this are helpful in controlling the population, eradication is currently out of the question. "Eradication of the entire population across the landscape is not possible with any existing tools, whether applied singly or in combination," the 2023 report said. Read the full article
