RWBY Ship Headcannons #67: Pollination (No En*bler) Kids Edition!

First, a quick run-down of all the kids and their names, in age order!

Honey (Blake x Yang)

Maraschino and Tango (Blake x Ruby)

Rosenwyn (Weiss x Ruby)

Eirwen (Weiss x Yang)

Aspen, Storm and Frost (Blake x Weiss)

And now onto the headcannons!

In general, all the kids love their Uncle Qrow. Qrow is a very present role model in their lives, especially the younger kids after Blake steps out of the Huntsman game and decides to stay home with Eirwen and the Monochrome triplets.

Honey knows the least of Qrow. He doesn't have a lot of bond with him to say the very least. Honey always wanted to go with his mamas on missions and would SCREAM the place down if he was left without even one of them for five minutes. But as he gets older, Honey just isn't interested in the majority of his family. He has friends at school and annoying little siblings, that's enough for an introvert like him.

Maraschino and Tango are always joined at the hip! They got the heft of babysitting with Qrow, since he was quick enough to catch them while they had kitty-cat zoomies. Tango is the gentler one and would grab Qrow around the ankle to drag him back. And Maraschino likes to grab sticks and whack them against anything she can find. Failing this, Mara just...gnaws at her great-uncle's hands. As the girls get bigger, Tango stays clingy and Maraschino stays feral, so whenever Qrow sees them, he ends up with a new 'BEST FUNCLE' bracelet in those clunky little beads, courtesy of Tango making them and Mara wrecking them.

Rosenwyn is and always has been a stuffy little sweetheart. She prefers being on her own well into her preteens. She has a little flip-phone because she keeps wandering off without her moms and getting lost in the process. Qrow's had to find her more than a few times, but she always insists she's fine walking on her own so he just tails her in bird form to keep an eye out. She considers him the most fashionable of her relatives (spare Mama Weiss) so if she goes into stores to look at pretty clothes, she'll ask Bird Qrow for his opinions through the store windows.

Eirwen is the kid who openly prefers Tai over Qrow, but will still go to Qrow when he's very upset. He will latch onto anyone he can find for a hug and Qrow already gives very good hugs, so it’s a natural decision to his tiny kid brain.

The Monochrome twins ADORE their great-uncle Qrow. They’re still babies so they love most everyone but Qrow is their favourite babysitter and person to see, whether they go to him or he visits them. Aspen is his favourite. Though he’ll never tell Storm and Frost that.

My first Nitpick November

Ok so I wanted to participate in this annual rwde thing this time so here I am!

My first nitpick from Rwby specifically has to do with Qrow's volume 7 outfit.

So first off let me start with this

His necklace and his rings. In vol 7 when Qrow got his outfit change, he gets different rings and his necklace disappears.

Like, why? Genuinely I got really upset by this. Some would think "Why is this a big deal to you?" and they would be right in thinking that. But again, this is a personal nitpick of mine, so I'm allowed to be upset by this insignificant change this month >:[

Now the overall outfit, I hate the color pallet. Why brown? And why is he wearing two different vests? And the white undershirt? Wack! The layering of this outfit just does not look right to me. Also, compared to Qrow's vol 3-6 model and his vol 7-present model, did they make his neck shorter???

I might be crazy, but I swear Qrow's neck got shorter. And it looks so uncanny to me.

Kleptomaniac Oscar

Oscar is a kleptomaniac. He doesn’t notice when he does it. His aunt compensated this by getting beads, pretty stones, and other small things. He learned how to do crafts with small items and he sells them next to his aunt’s stall on market days.

This makes life interesting when he joins RNJR+Q at Haven. Lots of little things go missing, dust, scrolls, lien. When they go looking for them and ask Oscar to help them look he looks confused until they start describing small things. Then to their confusion he starts patting himself down. He pulls more out of his pockets than they’d realized was missing, including Qrow’s flask. He apologizes and explains what his aunt had done and asks them to keep an eye on him because he doesn’t mean to steal anything, he really just can’t help it.

Nora thinks it’s hilarious and likes to take him on walks near prejudiced people. Ren helps Oscar return most of the things he takes. Jaune and Ruby (and later Yang, Blake and Weiss) get small trinkets (of various price and durability) to leave around for him. The first time he empties his pockets to find fistfulls of dust flakes and painted nuts and bolts he freaks out and tries to return them. Yang just laughs and asks his favorite color and Weiss hands him a bunch of containers for safely holding small amounts of dust and proceeds to teach him about dust. In great detail. He also finds an odd amount of glitter packets and weird not quite gem things. Jaune teaches him about sequins. Blake, after seeing him look at his assortment of oddities, leaves spools of thread and lengths of yarn. An unusual amount of cloth scraps find their way around that no one will admit to. (Qrow). There’s also still beads.

Soon enough, small treasures are found around the house: patchwork kerchiefs with initials beaded into corners, glittery cloth bookmarks, bracelets and necklaces with beads and nuts and bolts, sequined wrist and ankle bands.

i really wanted to incorporate previous concept styles and ruby's inspiration from qrow and turn it all into one thing while still being ruby-esque and ended up with this :] i really wanted to add more of a punk style to him as well!

the scarf is based off weiss's colors + rwby's for the rose petals and the necklace is part of penny's sword! i wanted to incorporate all the people most important to ruby and I'm just very very proud of what I came up with! i put a lot of love into this piece and i hope it's noticable :]

tempted to theorize about raven's necklaces since iirc qrow's necklace had some symbolism associated with it (something something carrying a burden) and after changing outfits he no longer has it...

and three red bead necklaces + one black chain necklace gives the vibes that they could be related to kindred link—and the old strq photo suspiciously manages to hide them, so there's no telling how many she had at the time (if any)—BUT. that's also where the problems come, bc if she has a red one for each bond she has... three is simply not enough. it would have to be something more specific than that, even if they were bond-related.

and that's a rabbit hole i'm not sure i want to jump into. i mean i will, eventually, but first i would like to know if vernal's death removed a red one or not.

So I guess we gotta do away with the theory about Raven's necklaces, the red ones for Qrow, Tai and Yang and the black chain for Summer since she was gone.

We see the black chain perfectly there while Summer is still alive and well, and likely with Raven still having portal access to her.

I live, I breathe I will die thinking that chain is for Ruby. They're not family in any way, but their still connected through the other links.

i think it's inch resting to make a note of the ways character designs are influenced by each other in rwby. especially surrounding qrow, but to be fair, his are probably the most obvious. you've got his scythe being inspired by the grimm reaper, but harbringer also has the same sort of visible gears by the handle as the long memory

there's also the little cross on ozpin's scarf, which. qrow has the cross necklace in his original design, and then the cross buttons on his v7 outfit. which, ironically. look ever so slightly more like the cross ozpin had, but it's miniscule enough that that doesn't really matter. you wanna know what the buttons in his v7 outfit look way more like? the buttons on ruby's cape in her original outfit.

there's something special about this fact because. ruby has a scythe because she was inspired by qrow, and even her v7 hairstyle seems to making her hair more similar to qrow's. but here. qrow is the one emulating ruby.

How about Team RWBY’s families?

We definitely have the families for Team RWBY, they’re the second important team in AZRE lmao

Both Ruby and Yang have the same family, since they’re, you know, sisters, so they’ll share this section together. 

Taiyang Xialong is the still the dad for both Ruby and Yang, and his design doesn’t actually change from canon. The only things I changed with him is colouring issues. 

His skin is obviously darker than what it looks in canon, even with the varying skin tones he has. Really, the cloest would be how he is in RWBY Chibi, since he’s considerably darker than his daughters and his RWBY counterpart. Plus, his hair is less desaturated and just lighter than Yang’s bright golden yellow, since it got lighter as he got older. 

His eyes are also a more purplish indigo than the actual blue he has in the show. 

The last thing is his pauldron on his shoulder. I changed it from silver to gold, since the silver metal clashed really badly with his overall warm pallete. Nothing too crazy for Tai’s redesign in AZRE, just a few bits and pieces so he’d look better in my vision. 

I also gave him a little design for Beacon, just so he had a keychain with Summer for my sister and her fiance.

He still has the overall colour scheme as his older self, and uses reddish browns and oranges compared to Yang’s more stark black and reds. It makes him seem more warm and mellow to contrast the dangerous fire that Yang embodies. He also had an undercut.

What I will say is that I primarily redesigned her so that she could both be Ruby’s mother and her own character, so her design has her with features that Ruby took (such as the hair and eye colour) while being different in other ways (she’s pale skinned, has wavy hair texture, and even her clothing style is, while gothic like Ruby’s, far more sexy.

Which is where Yang actually gets her fashion style from. Plus, the yin necklace is directly connected to Yang’s necklace, so Summer has something for both of her daughters regardless of her blood relation to Yang. 

Raven was redesigned to move away from the Japanese style clothing, and play more into her Norse/Celtic allusion and naming. The in-universe reason I gave for them being in Anima is simple migration; the Branwen Tribe was originally from Northern Vale, like other Celtic inspired tribes such as the Ankou, before they migrated over the frozen seas to Solitas and Anima collectively. 

So the Branwen tribe has their own fashion and culture to the majority in Northern Anima, especially since they actually travel across the entire continent rather than seemingly remaining up north.

But back to Raven specifically, I kept the mostly black and red colour scheme to contrast with Qrow’s lighter pallete, since it sells a more dangerous and deadly look for Raven in fitting to her character. She now also has a cape as a subtle connection to Summer, who she had a conflicting relationship with, and to add some more of a leader vibe to her now. 

She still has the rainbow sheath, but her katana was swapped for a more European Carolingian sword, which were only used by those of higher status since they were more expensive to make; hinting to Raven’s higher status in her tribe. 

Her sash over her stomach was also reminsicent of an obi, which does at least connect Raven to her home in Anima, but I added feathers and her emblem on it to connect her to her namesake. I think I’d redesign her bottom half honestly, it’s a bit plain and I’m not a fan of the shoes. 

She obviously still has most of her characteristics; her pale skin, feather textured black hair, her red eyes, and her bandana. I also gave her face scars to add to the dangerous look and because I wanted to. 

Qrow’s outfit is very much the same. I only added some details to give him a more dishevelled look, like his body hair/eyebags, and made his eyes the same red colour as Raven’s than the pinkish red he has in canon. 

You can’t see it in the full body, but he wears a ring on his right hand that Winter gave to him.

It’s silver but with a green gem, to match her green eyes.

I actually haven’t designed him an Atlas outfit. I already talked about how I felt about his canon Atlas outfit, since I like how it looks but feel that the colouring brings it down, so I’m unsure on whether I’d take more inspiration from that and just make it more suitable for Atlas along with fixing the colouring. 

Qinri Xiaolong is the only original character I made for the Xiaolong family, the one that appears anyway, who lives with Taiyang and his daughters. She thre great grandmother, but raised Taiyang as a child and so is seen more as his mother and grandmother of Ruby and Yang instead.

She lived before the Great War, and actually fought in it as a teenager, so her style of fashion is more of the traditional Tang Dynasty hanfu compared to her more western grandson and great granddaughters. Her blue and more water themed design is a contrast too, since she embodies the traditional chinese dragon with rivers and water compared to yang embodying the more western fire dragon. 

Very much the grandparents who grew up in their native home compared to diaspora grandchildren. 

The crests on her shoulders as well are the Taoist symbols, since she very much is a firm believers in the ancient ways rather than more modern beliefs that others might have. 

Now that Ruby and Yang’s are done, we can move on to Weiss.

Weiss’ grandparents aren’t shown, and Nicolas himself is important, but I haven’t settled on a design for him yet. I like the idea of his red scarf, but his canon design with the armour looks a bit too out of place, especially for the more Victorian style I’ve put in Atlas. He might get a design, he might not, his appearance isn’t really that important since he’s already dead. 

Biggest change for Jacques in AZRE is that his defining colour was changed from white to blue, so his design was changed to really bring this colour forward with the darker blues and greys to offset him from Weiss’ lighter blues and whites. 

His all white business suit was changed for a more defined over coat and crevat, similar to what Willow wears, since Atlas as a city takes more after rich Victorian fashion. His sleeves also have his style of the Schnee emblem, while the belt buckle and shoulder pads have the traditional emblem. He’s very proud and adament to keep the Schnee family in power and continuing strong, so he slaps the emblem everywhere to show it. 

The bottom of his coat tails also have white crystals on them, just like Willow and Weiss, to connect to his family business in Dust.

With his physical features, his blue eyes are still the same, which Weiss inherited, but his natural black hair is still shown, just greying with most already turning white to show his age. 

Willow’s design is very similar with the purple vest, skirt and crevat, but I did change some things around so that Whitely and Weiss have aspects of her design in their own. 

She has the shoe gems, crystal decals on her vest, and painted nails that Weiss obviously has in her Beacon outfit, while having the frilled sleeves and crevat that Whitley wears. I also have her eyes be indigo, which Whitley inherited rather than Jacques’ blue eyes. Willow’s hair is still naturally white, explaining Winter/Weiss/half of Whitley’s.

Not much to say since I kept it so similar, just adding bits to connect her to her children. 

Winter’s AZRE outfit had changed from her canon ones, mostly so that her uniform is closer in style to the uniforms worn by other upper ranks in the army. 

Now her story is different in AZRE than in RWBY, since I combined my Winter Watts! AU with AZRE to have this Winter who stays in Atlas rather than being taken by Watts in her backstory. This is why she has tanned skin and green eyes rather than her canon pale skin and greyish blue eyes. It also makes her only Weiss and Whitley’s half sister. 

Now her outfit still has the white coming through with the large overjacket and fur trimmed boots, but she also uses more darker blues than Weiss, with the royal blue and periwinkle, very similar to Jacques’ blues than Weiss’ ice blue. She can try to cover up his effect on her but it’s still just under the surface. 

Similar to Jacques, I gave Whitley a bit of a redesign to move away from the boring vest and tie, so now he’s obviously taken heavily from Jacques’ own design, since Whitely really doesn’t have a say in what he wears.

He’s also the Mirror to Weiss’ Snow White in AZRE, so he has the mirror in his crevat, along with the gem having the colours seen in the mirror in the Snow White Disney movie. The inside of his coat is also the same shade of purple that Willow wore, so while Jacques dresses Whitley up to be a mini him, Whitley does keep some bits of Willow. 

Especially since Whitley is the only one to inherit Willow’s indigo eyes, and has split black/white hair. I just wanted to make sure he wasn’t a copy of Weiss like the Schnee siblings are in RWBY. 

Klein is considered part of Weiss’ family, but his design is still the same in AZRE since I liked it enough and couldn’t be bothered redesigning him. 

The one original character for Weiss’ family is actually Winter’s daughter; Winijay, or Jay for short. I don’t have a design for her as a child, but here’s her design as an adult. 

I had actually drawn her before starting AZRE, so her design hadn’t changed from it all that much. She very much has Winter’s features, skin tone, and eyes, but Qrow’s black hair and fashion sense, since she’s closer to Qrow than she is to Winter and idealises her father. 

Still, the sleeves are similar to the sleeves of Winter’s first canon outfit, and her boot was changed from the all blue thigh high to a fur trimmed black one instead, since it contrasts with the mostly blue prosthetic. Her colour scheme is meant to mimic the blue jay, another corvid like Qrow.

She’s actually one of my favourite designs, I’ve always loved Jay’s look. 

Finally, there’s Blake’s family. Hers is actually the smallest, since most of her family members actually died before she was born, and her mother was an orphan who joined the White Fang just as it started. 

Both Ghira and Hajimu were done here for Adam’s section, since they’re his adoptive parents.

But there is one more person who wasn’t included for Adam, since she died just before he was adopted and never got to meet him. 

Chandra Devi is Blake’s paternal grandmother and where both she and Ghira get their Indian heritage from, since Aurelé is French. She came from Eastern Anima originally, similar to Kaanchana and Sienna, where she and Kaanchana take inspiration from Haryana clothing specifically. 

Since she’s connected to the moon, her colour scheme reflects that with the pale whites/blues and blacks, plus her moon patterns on her headdress. She also has the bindi as a married woman, similar to Sienna having the same bindi.

Really, I designed her to take heavily from Ghira and Blake, she’s the one with the black hair and panther traits, as she has the ears, slit pupils, and claws that her son and granddaughter have as well. Though, the gold eyes came from Aurelé rather than her, since Chandra has purple eyes instead, and she’s noticebly more darker skinned than Ghira and Blake.

Background

Qrow and Raven were raised by a group of bandits and raiders, collectively referred to as the tribe, since they were born. Their mother died when they were 8, a few days after Qrow’s semblance manifested. Needless to say, his father blamed him for her death.

Life was hard for them in the tribe. Only the strong survive outside the kingdoms, and Qrow had to fight tooth and nail to survive. It was a harsh life, and the tribe was none to forgiving of mistakes. At 17, he saw Beacon as a way out, and he took it.

Headcanons

Summer was the one who gave him his cross necklace when they were at Beacon

For the purposes of this blog he's Ruby's dad and refers to my Ruby as his daughter, since she was raised as such. (obviously with other Ruby's we can do uncle or dad or whatever)

He hates that he drinks so much, but doesn’t know how to stop. It’s the only thing that gets him through the day. Also drinking keeps him from dreaming, meaning no nightmares. (Going foward in canon since he quit, he sometimes has days/nights where he doesn’t know what to do with himself. Sleeping can be hard) 

He has pretty severe insomnia that can keep him up for days at a time.

After v8 when he got to Vacuo and realized Ruby and Yang weren't there, he just went on a bender. He's been drinking since he got there and won't stop until he knows they're alive

In the cold night on the streets of Redgrave City, two girls were walking side by side next to a man in a black cloak. They both held onto his hands tightly, shaking and quaking. However, it wasn't the cold that made them like this. The girls were frightened, tears in their eyes, their faces and clothes covered in dirt and dust. The three of them walked further along until they stopped outside a small building. The windows were broken, there were cracks on the door and on top was a sign in red neon light. It read 'Devil May Cry'.

Cloaked Man: Ruby? Yang? Would you like to go in?

Ruby/Yang: *shake their heads*

Cloaked Man: Well I can't leave you both out here. It'll rain soon. Come on. I'll make sure you both are okay.

Letting the children clutch onto his arms, the cloaked man slowly opened the door. It creaked loudly. Never before had a place been so messy as the Devil May Cry. Letters were scattered, cobwebs were all over the ceiling, the front desk was split in half and there were bloodstains on the walls. Sitting on the floor were two people, a man and a woman. The man was dressed in a torn white jacket, had a short, spiky black hair, scruffy stubble and carried a silver claymore on his back. The woman had long, spiky black hair, was dressed in a red vest, broken black armour and carried a katana. Both of them were covered head to toe in scratches, bruises and cuts. They were Qrow and Raven Branwen; the Demon Slayers of Remnant. They turned to the cloaked man with suspicion.

Raven: Hm? Who are you?

Qrow: The shop's closed. Whatever your request, we'll take it tomorrow.

Cloaked Man: This can't wait, Qrow.

He took off his cloak and both Qrow and Raven's red eyes widened in surprise. Standing before them was Ozpin, silver-haired, emerald green eyes and full moon glasses. He stared back at them with sorrow and desperation.

Qrow: O-Ozpin? You're alive?!

Raven: Wha-? H-How?

Ozpin: *raises hand* I'll explan later. Right now, there's something I have to tell you. *turns to Ruby* Wait here.

Ruby moved to Yang and held her hand as Ozpin led Qrow and Raven to an empty room. She felt terrified. What was going to happen to her and Yang? A few minutes later, Qrow peered out and walked to them. From the way his eyes looked, Ruby could tell that he cried too.

Qrow: Hey there kiddos. *small chuckle* You both went through quite the ordeal, huh?

Yang: *sniffles* W-What's gonna happen to us now, Uncle Qrow?

Qrow: *sighs* Well it looks like you'll be staying with me and Aunt Raven now. No matter what happens, *kneels down* We're here for you.

Ruby: *sobs* I-I'm scared!

Qrow: And I don't blame you, Rubes. But from now on, you gotta be brave. Both of you are big girls now, okay?

Ruby and Yang nodded sadly, giving their uncle a hug.

Qrow: Hey, how about I give you something?

The girls broke the hug and, from his pockets, Qrow took out two necklaces. One was dark red and had the head of a lizard-like creature on the front, another was bright yellow and had a lizard-like creature with bat wings. Ruby and Yang eagerly grabbed them.

Yang: What are they?

Qrow: Special amulets worn by your mom. She wanted you to have these.

Ruby: One day, I'm gonna be just like her. A demon hunter!

Qrow: And I'm sure you'll make the best huntress ever. *ruffles Ruby's hair*

Yang: Hey what about me?! *pouts*

Qrow: *chuckles* You'll make a great one too, Firecracker.

Ruby and Yang stared at their amulets and gave a somber smile. Though parentless, they found comfort and hope with their new family. It was the beginning of a life for them. A life worth fighting for.

—8 Years Later—

Ruby was armed and ready. In the past 8 years, she had grown tremendously. No longer was she the scared little girl who cried all the time. Now she was a young woman and a huntress-in-training. On her the back of her black leather jacket, she carried a long, carolingian sword, deep crimson in colour. Unsheathing it, Ruby scanned her environment. The weeds of the garden were overgrown, the back of the building was dirty with the paint flicking off and old appliances were scattered all over. It was quiet. Too quiet.

Wirrrrrr!!!

Ruby turned to the left and saw a chrome-coloured android stumbling towards. She looked again and saw 5 more. It reminded her of the old movies she and Yang used to watch as kids. Smirking, Ruby put her left foot forward and pulled her sword back.

Ruby: Let's dance. Hiyaahhh!!!

Charging at great speed, Ruby pierced one of the androids in the chest. Two more charged at her and tried to attack. Ruby was quicker, however, and swung her sword with great force, decapitating them. The final 3 started throwing punches at her. However, Ruby dodged them with ease and knocked them to the floor. She finished them off with stabs to chest. Up on the rooftop was Qrow, clapping at her achievement.

Qrow: You did great, Red. 6 seconds is your best time.

Ruby frowned and shook her head.

Ruby: Qrow, these androids aren't putting up much of challenge anymore. They're falling apart, even without my sword. Hell, I didn't even get a chance to practice with Lancaster and York today. Hmph.

Qrow: *dismounts* Look, I know it's not ideal, but I haven't had the chance to... "acquire" new androids as of late.

Ruby: Don't you mean your friend, Ironwood, found out about the thefts and wouldn't give them to you even if you paid him?

Qrow: *laughs* Watch it, you cheeky scamp. But yeah. Besides, you're not ready to fight demons yet. Not until I get you enrol in the Order of the Sword.

Ruby tried to contain her excitement. The Order of the Sword was a famous school within the community of huntsmen and huntresses. Unlike the other secret academies, The Order of the Sword didn't require anyone to be a student in a primary combat school. You could enroll at any age and they'd train you from the ground up. Ruby's Uncle Qrow and Aunt Raven trained there as kids and now Yang was attending. It would be a step closer to her dream of being a huntress.

Qrow: Now then, I think it's about time for clean up.

Ruby: Wait, wha-? Half of this is your mess!

Qrow: Sorry kiddo, but I have a client waiting and I can't be late. Aside from the money, they promised me a free whiskey.

Ruby: But Uncle Qrow-

The door from the garden slamned before she could finish. Groaning, Ruby grabbed a broom and sweeping up the androids.

Ruby:*mutters* Dick.
