kapoof combine the two hyperfixations
this is mike and will as parrots species, mike is a quaker and will is a cockatiel :)
Tumblr media
quakers are birds that can shift mood very quickly (often when not cared for properly) they can be very territorial, very loud but once they form a bond they can also be really sweet and cuddly. they love learning new things and learning new words and with the right birds they can be very social as well.
cockatiels are calmer, gentler birds who love head scratches and whistling, they can be social with other parrots but usually form a stronger bond with one other bird, or their owner.

We would like a church that again asserts that God, not nations, rules the world, that the boundaries of God's kingdom transcend those of Caesar, and that the main political task of the church is the formation of people who see clearly the cost of discipleship and are willing to pay the price.

About to add Quakers to the list of “bird species that aren’t as popular but should be more often considered from rescues”
These notes come exclusively from Toto as my experience with other Quakers is very minimal:
Pretty chill, totally content spending a whole day just napping with you
Easily entertained by your daily activities, wants to explore your pens and keyboards, isn’t overwhelmingly obsessive about it though. Capable of entertaining themselves.
Quite social, nervy around new people but warms up quickly especially if food is involved
Not particularly territorial esp if you make sure to play games around the cage. Goes for any parrot really.
Toto has a short attention span so training sessions are shorter than you’d expect, steps often need to be made simpler as well. Not the easiest for newbies to train but of course totally doable.
Tons of warning body language (now) they hiss which is the worlds most obvious cue to notice, super easy to avoid getting bit so long as the bird hasn’t been taught it’s body language doesn’t work. Also notable tonal shift when they’re upset
They give you a LOT of little preens! Super delicate and sweet I’ve never had him be rough with preening me
Does just chew toys for the sake of it, doesn’t need every activity to be made in to a group project or forager in order to be interested
Food mongrel to the max, switched from seeds to pellets in a day, has readily tried every new food I’ve ever offered him
Capable of dancing and talking although their words are incomprehensible, it’s still adorable
Not great if you have respiratory issues, pretty dusty
Some vocalizations are immensely loud but they aren’t frequent, he only shouts when startled or if Newt starts screaming first. Lots of talking to himself, poor mimicry, and grumbling though
Only parrot species that builds proper nests !and for social reasons! Not exclusively a breeding behaviour! As long as they aren’t hormonal/ aggressive you can offer them sticks and they might make one! Toto just likes to walk around with sticks and pretend like he knows how to do it.
Other Quaker parrot people feel free to add on to the list/ correct things that are different with your own!

When we walk past an indigent person without even a nod of recognition, we deny the existence of God in that person. When we pretend that he or she is invisible, we blind ourselves to that person's inner light and its connection to our own.

why do you dislike salutations/titles? personally I would give an arm and a leg to become Dr Captn reverend etc and just keep collecting them like Pokemon
Lmao I do think sometimes itd be great fun to be The Reverend Doctor Hero 😂
It's a couple of things for me, first and foremost being that, being nonbinary, I've got limited options and I personally find Mx really ugly! It makes me think of myxomatosis lol
Further on the gender thing, I find Mx plays into a wider trend of thought which asks how to incorporate nonbinary identities into existing structures instead of rejecting those structures. I don't want a salutation that indicates that I'm nonbinary - I want us to ask why we expect to carry gender in so many spaces in the first place. Why does it matter if the hotel I'm booking a room at knows my gender, or whether this woman is married or not, etc?
I'm also riffing a bit on the Quaker idea of plain speech. Back when we used "you" to be formal and "thou" to be informal, Quakers refused to use "you" because of their belief all people are equal. There are still some Quakers who use "thou" because of this. Some would also forgo salutations because of the etymology - master and mistress, etc. So for me, avoiding salutations is also a way of expressing that egalitarianism in speech. I'm not going to doff my cap to anyone, literally or linguistically, and I don't want others to do it to me!

Mark Reigelman, “Threshold” (2023)
“Threshold” by sculptor Mark Reigelman will be a public artwork celebrating the principles of equality and community-building that have been integral to the history of New Bedford. Inspired by the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) who inhabited the city in the late 17th century as well as the aesthetic of New England’s archetypal colonial doorways, Mark Reigelman beckons viewers toward Threshold’s partially opened door, shining down on Custom House Square from its 17-foot-tall perch.
Threshold will draw on the unique architecture of the federal doorway of the oldest building in New Bedford’s Abolition Row Historic District, constructed mainly from wood and steel, an important site in the early Black freedom struggle. Its double-sided door references the community’s diverse history, with its blue façade facing the Wharf and rising sun as a nod to the city’s fishing roots. At the same time, its massive arched window is tiled with colorful mirrored pieces, capturing the various identities and cultures that have made up the city.

Back on my Quaker nonsense (seeing that of God in everyone, viewing every person as inherently worthy of a good life and fair treatment, hoping and trying to fight for a better world, finding God in nature and tragedy in people being forced into violence, etc)
