"During the global coronavirus pandemic, China built dozens of makeshift hospitals and state quarantine centers, some out of steel container boxes. They became closely associated with the anxiety of mass testing and the fear of sudden lockdowns.
Now, cities are turning the huge centers into affordable housing units for young workers in an attempt to revive the country's economy post-COVID...
Just over a year ago, these apartments were used very differently: for medical triage and quarantine facilities. Beijing alone built 23 of these makeshift facilities, designed to hold up to 23,000 people at a time.
"It was not very cold yet but they told me to pack my belongings," remembers Hudson Li, a Beijing resident who was quarantined in one of these facilities, called fangcang in Chinese, in October 2022...
Less than two months after Li was quarantined, Beijing lifted most of its COVID restrictions. Li says he still associates the fangcang with a feeling of helplessness and fear: "It has been over a year already, but I definitely have PTSD from the pandemic, from the fear of scarcity and having to stock up on a lot of medicine and food."
Attracting young tenants with low rents
Now the fangcang across the country are undergoing a minor transformation and turned into apartment units for young graduates like Li. The changes are an effort from local authorities, who have been tasked with restarting economic growth and supporting small businesses after nearly three years of ruinous lockdowns.
Populous cities like Beijing are also trying to bridge the housing affordability gap between high real estate prices and low salaries, on average, for young workers. In the northeast corner of the capital city, near its airport, one fangcang with more than 4,900 units has been rebranded the "Jinzhan Colorful Community" — a reference to the bright hues of paint — and now offers amenities like a canteen where residents can grab a cheap meal before or after work.
Another fangcang facility, in the northeastern city of Jinan, has been turned into 650 units for skilled workers inside an industrial park.
"Given that the current overall [COVID] epidemic situation in the country has entered a low level, revitalizing the fangcang for other housing purposes is worth learning and thinking about all over the country," Yan Yuejin, a housing analyst, told Chinese media.
The fangcang, once a symbol of containment, are now supposed to represent dynamism and growth.
"I have complex feelings about this. The facilities were built using public funds and not rented out transparently," Li says. "But I do have to say you will not get anything more affordable than these apartments. They are very price competitive."
A list of rental prices for a Beijing fangcang converted into apartments shows most rooms are Rmb1200 (USD $170) a month, low for Beijing."

today I was chilling vodka in my freezer to depression-drink alone, and then I remembered I can just leave! I drove straight for the woods, with a picnic blanket and snacks and poetry and a narnia coloring book. and it didn’t make the sadness go away entirely but it reminded me how much I like myself, how much I love the world. there’s no moral to this story but I hope you get the chance to read a good poem or eat your favorite candy or find some beautiful flowers or see a funny raccoon this week. I hope we all get to live in peace and grow up together

this is in no way in defense of ariana grande’s ex husband or whatever bc idk anything but between this and joe alwyn, everyone acts like the only reason fame could interfere in a relationship is if the guys masculinity is too fragile to handle someone being more important than them. like that could be true but like having to take security everywhere you go, even though it is necessary, is a very big demand and definitely changes the kind of life that you live
like, let’s not pretend that being the significant partner of a very famous person doesn’t require you to live a certain kind of life that might not work for somebody.

Top five most unhinged things to put in an ao3 comment in ur opinion
this one had me so stumped i actually ended up finishing my homework but anyways
i'm ngl all ao3 comments are unhinged in general so it's really hard to think about so i’ll just try my best
screaming about how horny you are for a character - bonus points if it’s an oc
the fucking wall of hearts - how do you even have time to do all of that in the first place
creepy analysis - either of the fic or of a character
WRITING YOUR OWN CONTINUATION TO A FIC THAT WAS EITHER NEVER FINISHED OR WAS A ONESHOT
maybe when you quote parts of each chapter that you like and then write your reactions and the comment ends up going past the character limit

me: I just really want to live alone out in the woods without roommates
relatives and more outgoing friends: I don't know, that always sounds nice at first but it can get really lonely after a while. you might not like it as much as you think.
me: haha sure
me, two years into living alone out in the woods: ... yeah they didn't know what they were talking about, this is fucking great

Hehe hey remember that brief period in time when Mike Nesmith (The Monkees' lead guitarist and resident asshole) looked almost identical to Jimmy Page (who was not yet but would be Led Zeppelin's lead guitarist and resident asshole. I mean, a bigger asshole than the other members. Which I can't really say for The Yardbirds which was his band at the time, lest we forget Eric Clapton, who is/was at least as much of an asshole as Page, is also an alumnus of The Yardbirds. Anyway)? Pepperidge Farm remembers...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Anyway, a few key differences between these two control freak stick figures of undeniable talent but dubious likeability: Mike Nesmith could actually drive (and with proficiency) a car as well as a motorcycle (as well as -- I believe -- an airplane?) and punch a hole clear through drywall (true story), whereas Mister Black Magick on the other hand didn't (and still doesn't? Not sure?) have a driver's license, was not reasonably safe on a motorcycle even as a passenger (true story), and any attempt to do bare-knuckled physical damage to the structural integrity of a building would probably result in Jimmy looking like this:

Thank you for coming to my "How to Tell the Difference Between the Lanky Raven Haired Lead Guitarist Douchebags in lemongrablothbrok's Favorite Late '60s/early '70s Pop/Rock Quartets Where There's Two Capricorns and One is Some Cute Lil Guy Named Jones and the Other One is This Bitch Right Here" TED Talk. I forget why I did it in the first place, I think I was bored. And because comparing and contrasting arbitrary shit is my jam.
Also a couple months ago I had this dream that Led Zeppelin had their own TV show like The Monkees except it was them. Which would have been fucking wild. I blame those charmingly domestic indoor shots from the Chateau Marmont photoshoot for planting such zany ideas in my subconscious.

If I was a STEM person and not cursed with my affinity for humanities I’d be doing unethical mad scientist shit to transplant my consciousness into a life sim of choice. Can someone work on this for me? I’ll let you stick wires in my brain

Am l the fist to ask, did you see where GMMTV is doing a remake of Cherry Magic, with ...
Tay Tawan and New Thitipoom
... if you can believe that ?
I just crafted a massive thoughtful response to this and crashed Tumblr's editor, I really HATE their new editor. I have to remember to save as a draft so it switches to the old one that's so much more stable.
TayNew & Cherry Magic
Anygay, the upshot was: I saw it in GMMTV’s line up and this casting worries (but does not surprise) me. I'd prefer it if with TayNew they had reversed the dynamic (had Tay play the uke) since I think Tay is better at physical comedy and New is better at reserved pining.
Tumblr media
I offered up other GMMTV pair options (JimmySea, EarthMix, JoonDunk?) that might be better options for these particular characters, and that I think Wabi Sabi and OhmFluke might have been the superio choice. Although I understand that it’s GMMTV who can afford to adapt.
Tumblr media
I think the Parks could do it for Korea.
And the See You After Quarantine? boys for Taiwan.
Tumblr media
I like watching multiple adaptations and remakes. Love Stage!! is a trip (I did the manga, anime, live action yaoi from Japan, and then Thailand’s BL). So is Fated to Love You - I highly recommend that journey if you are someone interested in romance as a live action genre, your watch order is: Taiwan, Korea, Thailand, Japan, China. It’s truly an experience to get to see all the different countries takes on the same content. Each one is so much itself about it. Believe it or not, China is actually my favorite version.

sometimes one decides to start rewatching a crown of candy because one misses the amazing roleplaying and storytelling in said gorgeous, wonderful season
and sometimes one who chooses that path suffers the consequences (i.e. screaming internally every ten seconds and the overwhelming urge to punch a nonexistent piece of cake in the face)
