Ben Chatham was too niche to ever become known outside one forum but it's the My Immortal of Doctor Who. It was a series starring the writer's self-insert companion, Ben Chatham, and I guess it started with his fanfic version of series 2 (not sure if it's still online anywhere, but there's a summary), where Jackie dies of cancer bc the author thought chavs shouldn't be allowed on Doctor Who & the Doctor murders a hamster. His stories are full of random grim moments, and no one is ever heroic, since everyone just dies until UNIT can save the day. Ben Chatham is gay and a military-loving Tory. He reintroduced Adam and Jack over the course of the season bc he didn't like writing women doing or saying things and bc he felt Rose was too lower class to be allowed on television

I think I first learned about him when he posted his pitch for Matt Smith's first story:

"Martha Jones is walking down the cobbled street of the Cornish village of Little Bampton towards the local Inn, pondering why UNIT had sent her to investigate the strange sightings nearby and disappearances. Since entering into full time investigative work for UNIT in the UK following the events of Journey’s End she had never been so bored by a case. Nothing has happened in the three weeks that she had been in the village and she found the locals distasteful and she suspected some of the older ones were rather prejudiced.

Suddenly there is a familiar sound and she sees the TARDIS materialise in front of her. She grins excitedly as the door is flung open: “DOCTOR……….OH” she shouts as instead of the Doctor, a slip youth with floppy hair emerges, dressed in jeans and a casual jacket. “Who are you? Wheres the Doctor” she exclaims. “Hey babe, I’m like the Doctor. I’ve regenerated like. Wow its great to see you again. Wicked!”Martha is perturbed:

“But you’re so….. So much younger.” “Yay its great to be a kid again. I’m like so gonna get a myspace page. You look great in that jacket babe, I’ve like SO got the hots for you. Hows about we get up close and personal on the TARDIS double bed.” The Doctor coyly lets his floppy hair descend over his eyes."

There's a lot going on here, but my fave parts are picturing Matt Smith saying "Hey babe, I'm like the Doctor" and the fact that Martha internally refers to the events of Journey's End as the events of Journey's End. I've accepted ever since that Martha Jones can sense episode titles; she was just out there living her life until she suddenly sees a vortex and the words "THE STOLEN EARTH" floating in the air and groans at having to do this again

Also, in the Chatham canon, Martha hates going on adventures and loves to whine and do nothing. Just like everyone else. Meanwhile the Eleventh Doctor is a horny freak who wants to fuck and post to MySpace. Both of them despise poor people

This story also features the Russian mob whose leader, named Ivan, has henchmen named Ivan, bc he could only think of one Russian name.

Was the writer of this serious or a troll? We will never know. Certainly he was surrounded by trolls. He got an entire subforum quarantining promoting his stories, and there were fanfics of his fanfic, made by trolls whose sincerity was also, for many years, in doubt (they were trolls)

What we do know is that the writer repeatedly insisted it was canon, and wrote a letter to Doctor Who Magazine demanding more coverage of his OC. They sent him a lengthier letter he posted on forum but in the magazine all they said was

"Er…who?"

I have a question about diseases. I've always wanted a pet hamster but the risk of the meningitis some people get from pet rodents scares me off. Is that a common, likely thing?

It’s very rare. Most zoonotic risk comes from rats because many rats can carry rat bite fever and other nasty bacteria that are benign to the rat and deadly to the man. Even then, people contracting a dangerous disease from a pet rodent is extremely rare and you’re far more likely to get a disease from a wild rat than a pet rat.

With a hamster you’re mainly just going to have to be aware that if you get bitten by it you will need to clean the bite extremely thoroughly and if feasible you may want a medical professional to prescribe you antibiotics and assess the wound if it’s deep because rodent bites tend to be the perfect size and shape for an infection to brew because it’s hard to keep them clean and they heal slow relative to bites from other animals of a similar size in many cases.

For something like meningitis it tends to follow the same “do not kiss and lick the rodent” type of thing, but if you have your hamster quarantined and then get it tested for common zoonoses by a vet you aren’t likely to run into any problems because your hamster will ideally be the only rodent in its enclosure and you should wash hands before and after handling. The risk of infection from a hamster that is properly isolated in your home is extremely low, even lower if you buy from a responsible breeder rather than a pet store.

Ughhhh I’m so frustrated with my job right now

. I have been trying to get them to train me in as a manager for a good few months now with them humming and hawing about “yeah maybe,” and “oh there could be an opening at this location” then promising that I’d be trained on at that location then backpedaling in that. I’ve been shown how to do everything from cashiering, selling animals, Picking orders, animal counts and stock counts, animal maintenance in quarantine and new arrivals rooms, fish care galore and have been shown how to access and prints out any number of papers the pet care staff need along with ordering supplies and have been shown how to go about the safe for change orders for the registers but STILL it feels like their dragging their feat about actually training me on. And NOW corporate decides now is a good time to step on the stores toes even MORE via cutting hours for the staff of which are there for your PARTIME ONLY ACCEPTING BULLSHIT status ANYWAYS!!! I’m sosooooo frustrated over this all it didn’t help that they had 4 other store managers from OUTSIDE locations come to the store today and “help” our location while also tearing into what tiny contributions the rest of my coworkers left about the bagging station to make it feel friendly and livable for us! No cute sketches on display or little doodles by the other coworkers about fish and other pets like now it’s gonna be brick and mortar boring bland bullshit who do they think they are? Why do they think it’s okay to be the way that they are????!!

Not to mention the hellish training we have to go through and the monthly videos what job makes you do monthly videos? Quizzes at the end? I’m frustrated and angry over the feat dragging and the “veg assured” treatment of the animals not to mention the vet we have attached to our store and I can’t leave an actual review because I don’t want to be out of a job but Aaauuggh !!!! Bettas in cups!!! When we have open tanks!!!! Beardies and leopards housed as multiples!!!! Hamsters housed as multiples!!! Selling CONURES of all birds at the prices they are?!!!

Not to mention the PEOPLE you have to deal with there? The regular customers who think it’s all on you? YOU as a member of the STAFF???!! As if we have ANY communication with ANYONE higher than our store manager? Bro I haven’t even talked face to face a full conversation with our LAST district manager!!!! I wouldn’t even KNOW how to get in contact with HR!!! And what if I did? Brought up the complaints who fucking cares? It would be brushed off and ignored like the reviews I see buried under “teehee my ╲╲╲┏╮┏╮╲╲╲╲╲╲╲╲╲ ╲╲╭┛┻┛┻╮╲╲╲╲╲╭━╮ ▅━╯▋┈▋┈┃╲╲╲╲╲╰╮┃ ┣━━━━━╯╰━━━━━╮┃┃ ╰━━━━┓┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┗╯┃ ╲╲╲╲╲┃┏┓┏━┳┳┓┏━╯ ╲╲╲╲╲┗┛┗┛╲┗┛┗┛╲╲ likes it there” five star reviews.

I’m so angry!!! I’m trying so hard I work so hard and I get “maybe here let’s talk about something else” sort of attitude! And I can’t bring it up with anyone because I’ll either get forced to leave or the person I confide in leaves! So many store managers have left and so many of the other managers above me have also left and I’m thinking I might have to too if this doesn’t go through.

How much longer do I wait? How much longer do I tolerate this until I leave? I’m so frustrated!!! Cooly cutter AUGH nonsense- follow the other locations via visuals bull!!! I’m so fricken done but I can’t be done!!!

The Tail of Gambit the Rat - a true story

I told @frenchiefitzhere a true story a little while back, and she thinks the story needs to be known so I will try to tell it to you as I told it to her. Warning for a sick animal although he gets better. A little sad possibly.

Very many years ago, I lived in the top apartment of my block. It was a nice, friendly block and we all knew each other for the most part. One day, I went out shopping in the local town and wandered into a pet shop. I decided I needed a small pet. Perhaps a little hamster or something cute. The pet shop had a tiny cage, and I mean tiny. The sort of thing you'd use for quarantine or a hospital cage. At first I assumed the black pompom in its corner was for display. Then, it moved and I realised it was a rat. I hadn't considered getting a rat, didn't want one, but when I saw this tiny thing alone, curled up, I knew I wasn't leaving without him. The shop owner told me he'd been abandoned outside the shop (in January!) and he couldn't sell me the animal, but asked for a small amount for the cage.

When I got home, it was obvious the rat wasn't well. I named him Gambit, and took him to the vet. The vet told me Gambit had skin problems from being given the wrong food, mites, a chest infection and was deaf. He also told me the amount to try to heal Gambit would buy me several healthy pet rats, and I should euthanise Gambit as he probably wouldn't survive the week. Well, I didn't want several other rats, I wanted this one. This one who, despite being betrayed by his previous humans allowed me to earn his trust. This small rodent who would rather be on my shoulder than anywhere else. This one who, when someone else held him would look for me and actually leap back over to my arms. Who had utterly stolen my heart. No, I was going to give this one every chance I could.

Somehow, this little creature knew. He knew I was trying to help, and took his medication with no problem every day for a week. At the end of the week, I took him back to the vet who gave him the all clear and couldn't believe he had recovered at all, and told him I had loved him back to life. The slight chest rattle remained for the rest of his days whenever he over exerted himself though.

Anyway, that year very late Christmas Eve/early Christmas morning, we had been downstairs at our neighbours' Christmas party. It was about 2am and my then boyfriend and I were about to go to bed (it's ok, he's my husband now ;) ). He went and I saw Gambit bouncing around the cage when normally he'd be asleep. I decided to calm him down before I too headed in. I opened his cage and he would usually let me pick him up. This time, he ran for the front door! He had never behaved like that. Ever. Gambit was so agitated I decided I was going to open the front door, show him there was nothing there, put him back in his cage and go to bed. So I opened the door.

And thick, black smoke was coming up the stairwell.

We got everyone out and called the fire department who told us two things. Firstly, someone downstairs had put food in the oven and fallen asleep.

Second, if I hadn't checked the door when I had, and had just gone to bed, none of us in the building would have woken up Christmas day.

Remember the only reason I checked was for Gambit who had tried to tell me something was wrong. That little pompom from a random pet shop stayed with me for a few more years, and almost convinced me he was immortal. He didn't want to live with any other rats, he was my grumpy old man.

I miss my little shoulder rat.

Slight amendment to your dont buy any pets from large chain stores. Some of them host shelter animals, so those cats at petsmart? They’re from whatever shelter that location partners with. They’re really only at the store to get noticed.

Also for fish. Ugh tbh most fish stores get their fish from the same wholesalers chain stores do so, imo if you dont have a lfs that specifically gets right from the breeder, and the chain store treats its fish ok (note, a lot of deaths after they get a new shipment is sadly normal, fish really don’t handle stress well and the wholesalers dont keep them in the best conditions), then it’s generally considered ok in the fish hobby to get from the chain store. Plus you should always quarantine new fish anyways

Yeah, that is true about shelter animals, but even then you're not buying the animal from the pet store, you're usually paying a fee to adopt the animal from the shelter organization. I usually recommend researching the shelter in question to be sure they're legitimate and they've done everything they can to take care of the animal before putting it up for adoption, but that doesn't mean the animal can't be rescued.

I've never been in the fish hobby personally, so I have no experience with fish one way or another. All I know for certain is most large chain stores sell bettas in those pathetic little cups which is just not enough for a betta.

That cycles around to doing your research in general about any kind of pet you want too, though. Big-chain pet stores aren't inherently bad and they are great for getting your pet supplies, but it's super important to research what your animal really needs. The tiny hamster enclosures or tanks they advertise for ball pythons and bearded dragons are just not acceptable for those animals, unless we're talking babies. But people new to any pet hobby might be taken in by how easy it is to by a 'starter kit,' even if it doesn't accurately meet an animal's needs. However, other things like food, toys, and care items can be easily accessed at a pet store, and that's not a bad thing.
