Damn. This has been at the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens since September!

“LAIKA: Life in Stop Motion invites visitors of all ages to appreciate the painstaking work of stop-motion animation, with eight animation stations equipped with 2-D LAIKA character figures and environments that visitors can use to experiment with and create their own short films, then share and post online. The exhibit also includes puppets, sets, and video clips from all five of the studio’s renowned films.”

Dylan Robert Jones ; Document direction

1. Name / location -Dylan Robert Jones / Queens NY

2. What inspires you - I’m going to answer this with a story. A few years ago, I had zero interest in making visual art. I hadn’t made anything since high school and I certainly didn’t see myself as a visual artist, but one day I did this exercise where you write a letter from your inner child to your current self. You use your non-dominant hand so as to more easily tap into your repressed feelings. The writing was an extremely cathartic experience, but what was more interesting was that immediately after I had finished the writing, I created a doodle with my left hand of this distressed robot character and colored it in (see first image). It was evident that that drawing was a reflection of my world at that current moment. I then had the revelation that I didn’t have to try to convey anything with my work, that anything I made would be a symbolic expression of my emotional landscape and would be good in and of itself because of this. So what inspires me really is this nonverbal process of excavating and releasing hidden emotions through art.

5. Goal with art -My goal is to eventually be able to make enough money through art and music that I don’t have to work full time at a draining job anymore.

Who does it right - Bonobos, Norwegians, transition skaters, country singers, old cars, penguins, dancers, lucid dreams, old people, ghouls, state parks, graffiti artists, herbal teas, free online movies, pens, my singing teacher, farmers, friends, sand tray therapists, trees, Neanderthals, William Wonka, the beach boys, glass, blue collar workers, sobriety, turtles, seashells, oats.

7. Is social media evil - No, but it can land anywhere on the spectrum between evil and good depending on the particular situation. Usually it’s pretty shitty but without it my life would have taken a totally different course. For instance, I met my fiance through social media 12 years ago when we were teenagers, so I’m grateful for it.

8. Opinion on time - It’s scary as fuck, but one thing that comforts me is thinking about how all our differences will inevitably be swallowed by the ocean of time. What I mean by this is that in several hundred years time me and the person I hate will be seen as virtually one and the same.

9. Favorite blog - All the blogs that just post photos of Lana Del Rey. Those are chill.

Queens New York Nicknames

One of my old Army buddies from Queens NY is always using these neighborhood nicknames for the "guys". Tommy "3 toes" Robustelli, Davide "All thumbs" Bonaccorso, Enzo "The Russian" Eoppolo, I always ask why they have the nickname and it is always some dumb crap they did as a kid or some inside joke they all have because of some physical feature or injury. Today, he calls me with a story from a pub in Queens, as he often does. He always starts the same way, "Hey Richie, I'm sitting here at Maloney's (He always tell me the bars names like it's going to mean something to me in Nevada.) and you'll never guess who walked in, Oisin ((Uh-Sheen) "Six fingers" O’Mahony, like I know who the hell that is. Séan will go into a 5 minuet bought of pleasantries and catching up before getting back to me. At this point I will always ask how did so and so get his nickname, and I'll always guess. Tonight, I guessed that like the six fingered man, he had six fingers. As I said, so very often these "nicknames" have a connection to some physical trait or injury, not tonight. Oisin "Six Fingers" O'Mahony formerly known as Oisin "Six Fingers, Neat" O'Mahony always orders a single glass of Redbreast, 6 fingers deep. The "Neat" was dropped when he started getting it with one cube of ice. Out here we just call people Bubba or Cletus. The other side of these conversations is he'll tell me generations of Queen's history and I have learned so much street level history of Queens. Quite fascinating stuff from who lives on this block or that, when this building was made, it's all cool to me. I'll often be following along doing internet searches and reading more in-depth stuff. Being a history nerd it's cool getting it from a guy who traces his families roots in New York to 1699.
