Watching two asian gay guys take down the model minority myth and a transphobic society with their small genderfluid child wasn't on my bingo but damn I'm glad that it exists

nimona’s portrayal of queerness is just absolutely brilliant. it’s able to discuss the negative impacts of bigotry and ignorance on marginalised communities and anyone who is seen as breaking social norms, in this way it works as a trans allegory specifically, but it also provides the catharsis and comfort of a world where queer people are simply allowed to exist through ballister and ambrosius’ relationship. it’s a perfect balance of queer joy and queer pain that comes together to create a movie that is just a love letter to the lgbtq+ community. you are seen. you are not alone.

We do need more cheesy queer rom-coms, give me that lesbian Christmas hallmark movie, an asexual Cinderella story, a bisexual ceo who is gonna find his true love back in his small home town, a t4t how to lose a guy in 10 days, give me that diaries of a trans girlie, that goofy gender non-conforming character who is in love with their soon-to-be married childhood friend. I just want cheesy, adorable, sweet queer stories with cool printable posters and airport kisses.

just watched bottoms! it was a relatively small theater, but still, i don't think i've been in such a filled, interactive crowd since covid. people were CACKLING, and it was clear everyone was having fun with their friends they had come with. the movie was So camp, So hilarious, So fucking incredible.
when it's available to you, GO SUPPORT IT!!! queer cinema is ever-evolving, and supporting history-makers like this film is so awesome

Nimona said here’s this little girl who just wants to be herself in every form, who just wants to belong. Here’s her giving an apple to her only friend, nervous and desperate for acceptance. Here’s her friend accepting her up until peer pressure changes her mind. Here’s this small little girl, who just wanted to be herself and have someone love her and accept her as she is, in every form she is, seeing the one person whom she thought was ok and accepting turn on her, rejecting her. Here’s this bitter girl who’s whole experience has been rejection, has been villainized by people because she is different because she is herself. Here’s an institution that focuses on differences and how bad and monstrous they can be, that instills hate and fear into the citizens it swears to protect and yet will tear them down to get to whatever it wants to destroy. Here is someone who grew up in this institution, was molded by it and then turned away, villainized by the people he swore to protect, the people he loved. Here are these two people who are so different, who come from different backgrounds, have different motives, and yet they are the same, but not quite. Here are two similar individuals but one is not quite a monster, one does not have to chose between being themself or fitting in.
Nimona is so many things but it is a trans story through and through. It is so unapologetically queer, so unapologetically trans, so very important especially for today’s society. I’m so happy to see this iteration get the love it deserves <3

Have seen a lot of people being confused about Hirokazu Kore-Eda's 2023 film Monster (kaibutsu) if it's really a queer film or not. It is a 100% queer film about two pre-teen boys and their journey to self acceptance. I know a lot of people hate getting queer baited or when a media keeps the queer aspect too subtle to notice but Monster is not like that at all. The queer aspect is very clearly stated and the movie even won Queer Palm 2023 so watch it without any worries! It's an amazing movie and will surely leave you speechless.

This dialogue collects all the beautiful meaning of the movie but let's focus for a moment on Yori's "sorry I lied".
That child dared to disobey his own father and incur his punishment, again, just for Minato! These kids want so much to be together, freely and simply. They just want to be themselves with someone who truly understands them and to express their care. They want to never have to ask permission again. Why the social stigma shouldn't have let them experience their first love, their true identity?
And finally in the end they both let go of the shame. They no longer ask permission and accept themselves as they are.
- MONSTER (2023), dir. by Hirokazu Kore'eda
