“ Content Warning: Violence/ Murder - - Environmental Justice seeks to provide equal environmental health across all environments, where communities have a healthy place to live, learn, and work. Black / Brown people have faced the most environmental discrimination when looking at history. Racism and prejudice amongst marginalized groups have been apparent, and when we talk about the environment, we must realize that police violence is connected to environmental justice. Long-term high exposure levels to air, water, or soil quality increases the slow violence or death of an individual and making them extremely vulnerable (City Lab). These negative environmental health factors inflict the bodies of Black communities, and it contributes to their death when faced with police terrorism. Black people don't have the chance to breathe in their community because of white supremacy; police brutality has murdered innocent and sacred members of their communities, and many of their last words are "I Can't Breathe." How can we think about a sustainable future of innovations when Black communities CAN'T BREATHE. We must tell ourselves that Police Brutality is connected to environmental injustice. - - When talking about placement, we need to think where communities are designated by race, class, and status. From there, we need to ask ourselves, how policies are different from specific environments, and the increase of "surveillance and divestment" is apparent in neighborhoods of color (Williams 2018). The Bronx Climate Justice North group says that "without a focus on correct injustice, work on climate change addresses only symptoms and not root causes." In order to protect the planet, we must not only rely on the climate justice framework but on allyship and how we can address the "economic, social, and racial injustice that is happening." I've gotten a lot of new members in my community and just want to remind you that when we choose to ignore how issues are interconnected, that means you choose the oppressor's side. Black Lives Matters. Black Trans Lives Matter. Black Dreams Matter. Please constantly share/donate to Black Organizations”

Eco friendly spaces often are closed off and cater to primarily to affluent white folks. In looking to change policy and social norms make sure to listen to disabled voices. If they’re not included in your discussions then you’re not making environmentalism accessible to everyone!

1 and 2 for the asks :))
hello thank you for the questions! <3
1. chipotle order?
I've never had chipotle but my order at similar places is a veggie burrito bowl with beans, lettuce, pico de gallo, mild salsa, peppers, green onions, guacamole, and hot sauce
2. thoughts on veganism?
So I am vegan, and therefore have a lot of thoughts on this! Bare with me!
First of all, I think a lot of people have a misunderstanding of veganism (and certain self-proclaimed vegans give it a bad name sometimes). The definition of veganism that I, and all vegans I personally know go by, is "a way of living which seeks to exclude, as far as is possible and practicable, all forms of exploitation of, and cruelty to, animals for food, clothing or any other purpose." For me, this doesn't just mean not eating meat and cheese. It's also about trying to purchase locally grown food, grow and make my own when possible, make sustainable clothing purchases when I can, and so much more.
Another thing is the use of labour, both foreign and domestic, and how both animal and plant agriculture workers are so often underpaid, and many of these people are racialized, migrant workers whose labour is being exploited. Slaughterhouse workers often work in appalling conditions and develop PTSD and other health problems, but these issues are so often ignored because people don't want to think too hard about where their food is coming from.
Also, there's the issue of veganism and environmentalism. Beef production uses 160x more land and produces 11x more greenhouse gases than some staple vegan foods. Obviously there are so many other things to factor in regarding climate change, but animal agriculture is a huge one.
I could literally go on all day but here's my last thought: anti-vegans, non-vegans, and White Vegans™ tend to ignore and dismiss the voices of racialized vegans, poor vegans, disabled vegans, etc. There are so many incredible vegan activists that are paid dust because they aren't rich and white and skinny. Oh and any vegans who harass Indigenous people and their traditional cultural practices go straight hell. Do not pass go do not collect $200. That is all :)
Sorry that was so long skksjs I am very opinionated but if anyone actually read that and wants to learn more I'd recommend following zipthevegan, queerbrownvegan, cookingwithjoya, paritakansgara_, fulanivegan, bougievegan, mandydeville, blckvgns, and tyrathetaurus, just to name a few, on twitter. you can also find some of them on instagram and tiktok!

(Typo on ableism) ❗️ALL Able-bodied people read this! Repost Queerbrownvegan: 🙏🏻 “Let’s talk about eco-ableism as I, too, as someone who is non-disabled, partakes in an ableist society. For most of us entering Plastic Free July, I wanted to share why it is important that we continue to be specific in our language and focusing on systemic change. Eco-ableism is perpetuated in many environmental movements through shaming those for not being green enough or pushing policies that further harm disabled people. When we think of reducing plastic waste, we often need to remind ourselves of those who rely on plastic to survive. While we continue to advocate for systemic change, we often ignore and erase disabled people’s voices. Most laws talk about banning plastic straws, cups, and other alternatives, but in reality, when we think about it, those who are the most low-income will be the most affected by this issue. It’s not just that either. When we talk about green infrastructure and rooftop gardens, there is often a lack of recognition and attention for disabled voices. We cannot create and label climate resiliency programs as sustainable when they do not help people with disabilities. I believe saying phrases like, ban the straw, use public transportation or walk, and you’re not doing enough can often reinforce ableism. We must take the time to rephrase our statements and be more precise with our language. We can admit that plastic is an environmental justice issue and that the policies we push for do create some change, but again, is there justice when others are hurt in the process? Holding petrochemical and fossil fuel industries should be our center and focus on getting them to pay reparations. Yes, we can still reduce our plastic if we have the privilege to, but that does not mean we have the right to shame those who rely on it. @thesustainablefashionforum The feelings of #ecoanxiety, #ecodisconnected, and #ecoguilt, are real! 🙃 It's easy to feel discouraged when you learn about fashion's impact on both people and planet — especially when you feel that laws, business models, structures, and processes aren't changing fast enough. 🤦🏾‍♀️ While these feelings are completely NORMAL, we must take care of ourselves both mentally and physically. #Selfcare and sustainability go hand in hand. 👏👏 Self-care is crucial for the continuation of the sustainability movement. When we feel burnt out, exhausted, tired, overwhelmed and just plain down in the dumps, it's hard to continue fighting for the betterment of people and planet. 💯 x 1000! For the first time in SFF history (all 5️⃣ years😅😝), we're beyond excited to partner with our friends at @yogaglo to offer meditation and body empowering yoga flows with @marclawsii and @stephaniesnyderyoga throughout the SFF conference! 🧘‍♀️🧘‍♂️ Join us next week (!!!!) 🗓 April 20-24th from wherever you are in the world 🌎 as we come together as an industry to reimagine the future of fashion and identify action-driven solutions founded on creativity and collaboration. ✨ Link in bio to grab your ticket! 🎟 HUGE thank you to our friend @queerbrownvegan for always educating and inspiring us! ☺️ (P.S a little birdie 🐦 told us that on the 27th @versed and @gloryskincare_ will be chatting over in @groupchat.social about all things selfcare and wellness! 🙈) (at Milan, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/CNq5JI_MnTB/?igshid=1na4fldebcuor

my people, #environmentalracism is very real! and there is an extreme disconnect going on right about now where folks don’t recognize or straight up ignore the fact that if we truly believe #blacklivesmatter we have to stop fronting on the fact that #blackhealthmatters! and the same most definitely applies to the health and lives of other communities of the global majority! if we’re honestly down for the dismantling of this toxic system’s practices and traditions we need to abolish all of them! commit to decolonization and stop contributing to the terrorizing and polluting of our own fucking communities! lastly, the always on point @sonofbaldwin wrote extensively (on fb/twitter) about the highly organized distribution of fireworks into our communities nationwide at least a month before the #farceofjuly—read up on that shit because there’s definitely some psychological manipulation at play in addition to this poisonous practice! @queerbrownvegan @decolonize__ keep on @upsettingthesetup!! #fuckthefourth #fireworks #fourthofjuly https://www.instagram.com/p/CCRgKteJHaO/?igshid=2ukp1oy6x63x

The US government can afford to support environmental justice, improve community health, increase quality of education, upgrade infrastructure, and provide opportunity for all.
Our leaders just choose to fund genocide instead.

Where does our plastic go? As part of plastic free July I want to talk about the wider issue of plastics beyond just individual consumption. So today we're looking at there it ends up. . . The UK, Along with many big consumer countries in the EU, the US, and Japan, exports a lot of its plastic. Exports used to be mainly destined for China, which banned them, then Malaysia, which has curbed it's imports of plastics, then moved onto Indonesia. The cycle repeats. Sending our waste to countries without the infrastructure to deal with it, because we also do not have the infrastructure to deal with the vast amounts of plastic we consume. . . Then we blame these countries when this plastic is not properly dealt with and ends up in the natural environment, rivers, the sea, whilst also poisoning vulnerable communities. The system is so corrupt and shows no care for human life or the environment. This is a environmental issue, this is a social justice issue, this is a racism issue. . . How do we stop it? Well we can try banning the export of plastic (something the UK Environment bill is aiming to do), which will force us to deal with it here. We can curb our consumption and hold industry and corporations responsible for the plastic they produce, and make us reliant on. We can also support the vulnerable communities being affected by our waste. (Plus elect a new government who care for both people and the planet). This continues, just as many of these awful systems do, because corporations and governments benefit from these practices, they can dump the issues on someone else and also blame that someone else when they can't deal! How toxic. . . This post was inspired by @queerbrownvegan post on zero-waste systems and environmental racism. I reccomend giving it a read, his work is amazing as always. Here are some of the resources I used to write this: https://www.greenpeace.org/international/story/21792/plastic-waste-environmental-justice/ https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-46518747 https://www.greenpeace.org.uk/news/malaysia-endures-toxic-legacy-of-uk-plastic-waste-exports/ https://www.letsrecycle.com/news/latest-news/exported-plastic-waste-returning-to-the-uk/ (at Cardiff) https://www.instagram.com/p/CCOvmfTAHse/?igshid=1gl0cm0eqgaek

Instagram’s Patagonia Alter-Ego, ‘Pattie Gonia’ Questions It All – WWD
https://pmcwwd.files.wordpress.com/2020/07/screen-shot-2020-06-26-at-1.16.16-pm.png?w=640&h=415&crop=1
With a formal debut in 2018, Pattie Gonia has since trekked hundreds of miles of trails — in 6-inch heels no less — while taking her community of queer-identifying folks and LGBTQ supporters along for the lifelong journey in finding identity in the outdoors.
Affixed to her head during a recent Zoom call is a rainbow wig of recyclables her New York City-based wig designer made for her most recent speaking engagement with the queer affinity group at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Lab.
“It’s very Marie Antoinette,” she said, tilting toward the webcam to show the constellation designs on her eyelids before remarking: “Listen, I’m not trying to pretend like I’m any sort of professional queen; I do it because I love the fun of it, and I’m learning how much I love makeup. And it’s a really good challenge and way to practice less waste.”
This freedom to experiment with makeup was a far cry from the stifling experience young Wyn Wiley — the photographer and creator of the Gonia “platform” — experienced in Boy Scouts while growing up in Nebraska, claiming an overwhelming display of “toxic masculinity.”
New horizons have opened since the launch of the platform. In the past two years, Gonia has amassed nearly 300,000 Instagram followers and has guided her platform to be quite open to learning.
A recent post reads: “I’d challenge you to see how the very systems, organizations and industry we support in the outdoors continue the narrative of only having white queer people [like myself] be the only queer people you see in ads/the only queer people are supported financially, sponsored, backed etc.,” sharing artwork by Brooklyn-based artist Moss Bastille.
Before her annual celebratory hike later this summer commemorating the creation of the platform — on a section of the Continental Divide Trail, departing from the Never Summer mountain range in Colorado behind Rocky Mountain National Park — like many others, Gonia is questioning the status quo.
Everything from cancel culture to allyship and brand partnerships is on the table for discussion, especially as the Black Lives Matter movement and the far-reaching impact of the coronavirus are meant to outlast the daily news cycle.
And major companies are getting behind her message. In June, Gonia worked with video game developer EA Sports to bring an “eco-lifestyle” extension pack to the Sims, as well as a donation match toward the Arbor Day Foundation to foster youth environmental education.
Other brand partnerships include REI and its “Everything to Lose” campaign and American Express, among others.
But the mainstream environmental space is still missing the mark in some aspects. In its 2019 transparency report card study, independent advocacy campaign Green 2.0 found the racial makeup of the mainstream environmental movement to still be primarily white, despite a positive increase in the number of people of color at the senior level, roughly 23 percent, and board positions, 25 percent. Green 2.0 is pushing for 30, 40 or 50-percent people of color represented at full-time and senior staff levels — to better align with the gains white women have seen in the space thus far.
With her platform, Gonia has recently been illuminating Black environmental organizations like Girl Trek, Greening Youth and Outdoor Afro through traditional fund-raising and donation means. Over the past three months, she has organized a handful of group hikes and educational resources on and off-line — with a clear call-to-action for community members.
As an inaugural member of the Intersectional Environmental Council, a new council on Instagram devoted to amplifying the “unheard voices in the environmental movement,” Gonia joins “diverse powerhouse” members such as Isaias Hernandez of @Queerbrownvegan; Sophia Li, and Aditi Mayer in sculpting a “greener, more inclusive future for all.”
Not sidestepping the perceived “woke-washing” of some companies, Gonia added: “I’ve been really grateful to meet a lot of people who are also admitting that their heart is in the right place, and their head is in the right place, their intentions are there but they will make mistakes, everyone’s going to fall down now and again.
“I’m a huge believer in instead of calling people out, we should invite people in. Putting the energy out there of learning rather than cancel culture — that’s what I’ve found is most productive,” she added. An obvious fan of word play, she quipped: “I think it’s really important to stay on our trail and just keep on going.”
But every now and then, she’s not immune to making the humble correction on Instagram — be it an open letter to Patagonia or an Internet troll.
She spoke further of solidarity in action. “Allyship is very much a verb to me. It requires constant action; it’s not a noun, it’s certainly not a title you give yourself.”
Comparing these tumultuous times to an earthquake, Gonia said: “I will be really excited to see where the dust settles at the end of this period,” adding, “I’m also expecting the dust to never settle. We are seeing truths about ourselves. And I speak for myself, but there has been no better time in my life to question everything.”
As Gonia said, spreading “positive environmental energy” can mean putting her at odds with her values. “I’m doing a lot of reflection on my actions,” she added, which means frequent flying for appearances and interviews is likely a no-go in the future or “not necessary,” as she puts it.
Those flights can add up, considering the carbon dioxide cost per passenger is about two to three tons for a round-trip flight from New York to San Francisco or to Europe, as per the United Nations’ International Civil Aviation Organization. According to Nature Conservancy, the average American’s carbon footprint is 16 tons — one of the highest rates in the world.
In many reports, consumers are already reflecting on these actions and more, separating the necessities of life from frivolous spending, especially through periods of economic recession.
Keen for metaphors, Gonia added: “We’re all facing the journey of a thousand miles coming up, and we started and it’s rough, but I think there’s some beauty ahead, too.”

As long as humans are alive on Earth there will be hope. Do you understand that? Even with a crisis on our doorstep, we aren’t going to roll over and give up so easily, especially not when other like our family and friends still rely on us for love.
