hi im putting a giant disclaimer that this is about the CHARACTER. scar.

anyways. i've been rotating cscar's queercoding in my head for a hot minute. and i can elaborate on this in another fashion, but like the biggest thing i have been thinking about when it comes to him is like. the way that people take this and twist it to be horribly wrong. and how this is displayed especially in desert duo, and like coincides with ableism to a fault.

i will state very plainly that cscar is capable of being violent- and in some cases, malicious. however, something that deeply gets to me is the way that a lot of the fandom tries to juxtapose a lot of hypermasculine and violent traits on to scar - especially when he's shipped with grian.

the thing about scar, is that if you really want to argue any sort of gender roles that you could try to jam the two of them in - cscar doesn't fit the traditionally masculine role. cscar is gentle. he is kind. he is fiercely emotional- and he wears this kind and softness in plain sight- even when it comes to his plans. and that's FINE.

and the very unfortunate realization that a lot of the reason why scar gets his kind and gentle traits stripped from him in favor of being more "traditionally masculine" so he's more shippable (in some cases) with grian. or rather, he's more palletable to those who are used to (admittedly harmful!) mlm tropes. and as someone who does like scrian - it's still really disheartening.

there's also the flipside of this in which cscar gets stripped of all of his agency, and he's just this dopey silly guy who's not capable of doing anything unless big strong smart grian does stuff for him! and it's just. the lack of nuance does drive me nuts, constantly.

Writing "woman" as "womxxn," "wombyn," etc: Transphobic, bioessentialist, probably TERF rhetoric, etymologically nonsensical.

Reclaiming "man" as a gender neutral term for "human" and implementing old and new prefixes to indicate the gender of the person in question: Bold, Sexy, Creates fun new words, In line with historical etymology of English, Can be used to predicate gender on social roles/concepts that are unrelated to sex.

Illustrations:

Werman - old usage that indicated a male of our species. Fell out of favor around 13c. Could be revitalized to replace current use of "man." (Note: this is also the origin of "werewolf")

Faeman - person whose gender is defined by some kind of alignment with the concept of faeries.

Butchman - person whose gender is defined by alignment with the concept of butchness.

Queerman - person whose gender is defined by queerness/refusal to specifically align with any particular gender concept.

Other suggestions are welcome.
