I love how the only official art we get of Valas makes him look absolutely grouchy as hell, and the FR wiki describes him as:

"Valas was described as wiry and small, standing 5.25‑foot-tall (1.6‑meter). Valas had amber eyes and a square jaw. He often appeared tense."

because ofc he's tense, he's in a party with Quenthel and Jeggred

I find it interesting because it kind of brings to mind how back in the day, biologists incorrectly concluded that wolves have a strict social hierarchy enforced through gruesome violence based off of observations of adult (often unrelated) captive wolves being thrown together in a totally unnatural environment that gives them no space or freedom to just, like... get away and cool down for a while

but actually

Wolf packs in the wild are just families and recent research indicates that there are even individual pack cultures that we've yet to understand.

Anyway, Valas in Quenthel's party is like a wolf who got thrown into an enclosure with a bunch of other wolves, and people incorrectly came to the conclusion that he is a total grump by nature because he's stressed while living in stressful conditions under very stressful circumstances.

And then whenever he shows up in Legend of Drizzt or hell even just gets to get away from Quenthel and Jeggred for a bit in WotSQ he's actually really chill, jokes around, smiles, and loves going out for drinks.

#valas hune #wotsq #I just have way too many thoughts about this man #I mean I have lots of thoughts about lots of other drow too #I could go on for days about how the broader fandom misunderstands virtually every single character #especially Gromph and Jarlaxle and Drizzt #but those of us in this particular subset of the fandom are very vocal about countering that #with Valas people love him but also seem to come to the same conclusions as the wiki about his personality #and actually #Valas is a sly mischievous lovable dork
