I just read your ask post breaking down how My Pride makes religion the main villain and just wanted give you guys huge kudos for pointing that out! I'm also religious but hadn't even picked up on that. Positioning religion as the ultimate evil is a dangerous mindset; it doesn't just ignore other causes for people's cruelty, but often leads to belittlement of minority cultures and customs which veers into very.... yikes territory. Very recently I've been seeing people use this mindset to aggressively excuse the shitty appropriations of Black Diasporan religion in media. All this to say, people with cruel streaks will take any excuse to exercise cruel intentions- with or without a belief system to back them up.

Especially agreed hardcore on your last point. Seeing people excuse Powerstike and Quickmane of their actions on account of "well they're just following a religion!" is utterly repulsive. The fact that the writing is gross for using religion to explain their actions aside, Quick followed Pride Law with a big ol' grin on his face. I'm not really buying that he's a victim of circumstance while he's actively tormenting children before murdering them. The fuck? Same goes for Powerstrike, who clearly knows how to treat the disabled with respect based on her treatment of her elderly mother but... still chooses to be abusive towards her disabled daughter. More Than Nothing ch.2

Nothing and Skychaser walked into an archway and Nothing looked up at it in astonishment.

Then there was laughter and she looked to see two cubs playing and another pair sleeping.

“Those are my siblings,” Skychaser said, “and the lionesses resting on the boulders are my sisters.”

“The-there’s so many,” Nothing whispered and Skychaser giggled softly, gently flicking her nose with her tail.

“Skychaser!” A voice called and Nothing looked up to see a black lioness. She was nearly larger than her mother and yet she gave a commanding aura just as she did.

Nothing flattened her ears and shrunk back.

“Mother, I found this lioness near the lake by our territory. She would like to join our pride,” Skychaser explained.

The mane raised an eyebrow and Nothing looked at him. He was as tall as her father, Starmine, and he looked even more stronger than Quickmane.

He had white fur, a black mane and his eyes were a dark and deep blue color. It almost looked like he could stare into someone’s soul.

“I am Risingmoon, the Hunt Chief of this pride,” Risingmoon spoke, looking at Nothing, “what is your name, lioness?”

“I… my Pride named me Nothing,” she spoke. Risingmoon frowned and flicked her ear as one of the lionesses giggled.

“Nothing, huh? Sounds pretty accurate,” a white and cream lioness chuckled smugly. Nothing lowered her gaze.

“Hush, Cunningspirit,” Risingmoon said sternly and she looked down at Nothing. “It is equally as cruel for your Hunt Chief to give you such a name,” she said.

Nothing looked up at her nervously. She didn’t have the heart to tell her that it was her own mother who named her.

“But… you may join us… if you can prove that you are able to complete your Huntress Assessment,” Risingmoon continued, “even with your wounds.”

“R-really?” Nothing said, surprised. Risingmoon nodded, “I am not one to let a lone lioness be alone on the Prideless Stretch; I can tell you have a strong wit about you, young one. Tomorrow, when Sunce’s Eye is above the earth, you will get another chance. You will have another Huntress Assessment.”

Nothing smiled, “th-thank you.”

Risingmoon nodded and she walked over to her mate.

“How will she contribute to the needs of the Pride?” He whispered. “Trust in me, my dear Morningmane,” Risingmoon said, laying down next to him, “Sunce knows this poor thing is in need of a new home. She’ll do her best.”

Morningmane nodded and he glanced over at Skychaser and Nothing.

“You’ll do good, Nothing,” Skychaser said with a smile. Nothing smiled and nodded. She could only hope so.

The 2020 reboot of My Pride is good and all, but I think part of me will always prefer the classic 1960s version. Sure it was hokey and full of animation errors and the dub absolutely butchered the Nothing/Hover romance to try and sanitize it for western audiences, but it had heart, ok.

So I present you a Lion King 2 AU!! Fire is murdered by  Quickmane, Nothing is cast out of her Pride, and in cruel retribution kidnaps Feather as a young cub to raise as her own in the hopes that he will one day be “King” of the lions and enact her plan for revenge on Quickmane!

You've probably gotten a lot of messages like this before but I wanted to just thank you guys for showing a form of abuse that isn't only physical and still calling it abuse and not hand waving it away. So many stories that include abuse tend to assume that it only counts as abuse if it's physical. They ignore mental and emotional abuse entirely and if they do acknowledge it, it's portrayed as not that bad and something you need to forgive your abusers for.

As someone who's still coming to terms with my own experience with a similar kind of abuse that Adamant and Hope faced, your comic makes me feel seen and validated in my feelings and especially in my choice to cut off the family that hurt me. Seeing Adamant and Hope leave and not be shunned for it was such a relief and breath of fresh air after so much media tells you to forgive people who hurt you, especially if they are family.

again, thank you. I'm forever thankful this comic exists. you two are fantastic and I can't wait to see where the story goes :)

Thank you so so much, anon. We feel mixed emotions when we get asks like this because it's nice to hear but it's also so hard to hear our readers dealing with what we've dealt with and it's also hard to articulate how much we hear you and how sorry we are.

What you're saying is such a good point. Emotional abuse is so often discounted and watered down and even disregarded as being hurtful. It also doesn't help that even physical abuse gets the same treatment. Especially when it's just dismissed as 'discipline' or a 'loss of control'. But going back to emotional abuse, this is one of the main things that we wanted to so desperately try and portray vs. how My Pride had portrayed it. The very idea that emotional abuse at the hands of your family isn't actually abuse because it's just them loving you and 'wanting what's best for you'.

Which is so ridiculous because overprotectiveness can very, very easily mutate into smothering and parents feeling that their children have zero agency or identity outside of themselves, especially if you're disabled. Parents like this don't deserve humanisation or sympathy. Their actions are possessive and unhealthy and may be a indication they're suffering from a form of abuse themselves.

My Pride could have tackled this with Powerstrike. She lost her mate and son. Her culture is heavily against her and her own sense of agency. However, the script is too busy highlighting how she feels 'weak' because her daughter is disabled and can seemingly do nothing to fulfil this unachievable image she has of her.

It's how you know the script was written by an able-bodied individual, somebody who will never know that this kind of thing makes you feel like utter dirt as somebody who isn't a "perfect" neurotypical, able-bodied individual.

Even if the creator is neurodivergent herself, this was such a huge ball to drop. Powerstrike saying 'whenever I look at you, I only see what you could have been' is very much a fucking Powerstrike problem and she deserves to rot for it. Being viewed under the lens of what you "could" be if you didn't have a physical disability or conditions that cause developmental delays like autism is downright devastating for those who have them and fuck that show for trying to humanise Powerstrike by having her spout such garbage.

There was nothing remotely sympathetic about that speech. It was just Powerstrike whining about having a disabled daughter and the context of the speech is that she was called out for not caring about her children and the creator somehow thinks that her child being disabled.... excuses that?

I apologise for going off on a rant, but Powerstrike's speech fits the bill exactly with what what you're talking about because MP fans have fallen for it hook, line and sinker and refused to see how gross it is because Powerstrike never physically abused Nothing like Quickmane did. Even though it is very obviously emotional abuse and manipulation.

It'd be great if we could just assume this is just superfans defending their favourite show's honour because god forbid something they enjoy is delivering problematic messages like how parents who have an ableist perception of their children deserve sympathy, but we've had people come to us and directly point to the show's writing as a reason for them failing to identify valid forms of abuse and therefore feel they cannot act upon it or seek help for it.

May not be what the creator intended because she was presumably high off her own fumes when she wrote speeches like Powerstrike's, but that's the reality and making excuses for it like MP fans have isn't going to make the issue get any better.

Doing this comic has allowed me to confront the same feelings you have also had to contend with, anon, and I'm very happy we have been able to share something together there. You and others like you also make me feel less alone and less angry about what I've experienced and I hope you never forget that. - RJ

In the story of My Pride, there are things called "Huntress Assessments" to name a lioness after what she's good at. They test to see if the three Goddesses, Sunce, Cansu, or Azra have blessed the lioness.

The main character, who had a disability with an unusable leg, was called "Nothing."

Here's something interesting though: Nothing was only tested to see if she was blessed by Sunce.

Sunce being the goddess of wrath and trickery also has a grudge against Nothing because back when Nothing was Kioga she was named AZRA'S chosen. Kioga rejected Sunce's chosen, Light.

No wonder she failed her huntress assessment. If she had been given the chance and Sharptongue had been able to do a proper test to see who Nothing had been blessed by, I could see a few names being picked for her.

Nothing had been able to stand up against Quickmane when she was a cub, blinding him (which is also how she earned her scars). So Sharpclaw would be a good one for her. Her role in the hunt party would be getting in the final blow to dangerous animals to kill them so they could bring it back to the pride. Azra would be the blind Goddess of the night, but perhaps she blessed Nothing with the ability to hunt better in the dark, becoming "Darksight." We also see that she has good eyesight when she saved Hover from the crocodile in the water. Cansu has also taken a liking to Nothing, but mostly because Nothing ran into Cansu on the stretch and showed her kindness to saving Fire, so I doubt that Cansu, Goddess of the rain, travels, and wisdom would look upon Nothing and bless her.

So yeah, that thought was niggling in my brain.

Crashman:

-absolutely not qualified to be a parent but tries his best

-"holy fuck my dad will kill me" or is very open for talking when you've fucked up. No inbetween.

-Always there to listen to you when you're sad

-if he ever catches wind of you getting bullied at school he'll personally make sure they'll never even look in your direction again

-very clumsy so usually you end up having to do cleaning/ cooking

-for your own safety, leave him alone when he's mad

Quickman:

- second worst parental role model, next to crash

-he's the cool dad who hangs out with the chillest people and goes to cool events that you can't come to bc you're still too young

-will definitely try to get you into his interests (racing) by all means, will take you along to watch competitions

-won't admit it but he loves hugs

-definitely cares about you, tends to forget to spend time with you though

Flashman:

-probably the most responsible parent out of all the others

-he's pretty strict when it comes to things like bedtime or going out

-loves you a lot and will show it in form of all means of affection, usually hugs

-often uses terms like "bud" or "sports"

-"we have food at home"

-loves photography, hopes to get you interested as well, will take you hiking or just on a stroll through the woods

-amazing teacher and incredibly smart, will give you answers to all your questions and help you with your homework

Metalman:

-he may look shady, but is actually a pretty cool parent

-hes the reason people don't fuck with you though, he hates violence but if anyone fucks with you they'll probably end up missing

-surprisingly good cook

-dislikes physical affections, but he will show you that he cares in form of his actions

-"i really don't care at what time you come home, just be safe and have fun"

-extremely loose on rules, but still manages to be a good parent and raise a decent kid

-just don't make him mad, if you continuously misbehave he'll find a way to get you disciplined

Heatman:

-will probably give you all the wrong advice, even if he means well

-doesn't care that much about your grades, he only wants you to have a good life

-regular barbeques in the garden

-has definitely torched the house down before

-there's like 10 ac's in the house due to him accidentally making it a living grill

-winter cuddles

Bubbleman:

-tries way too hard

-he only wants the best for you

-will cry if you hug him

-overprotective

-always makes sure youre doing alright, if you're down he'll make you tea and food and probably watch a movie with you

-not strict enough in fear you'll hate him

-(puberty will be a complete nightmare for the poor guy)

-takes up the bathroom for way too long, has fallen asleep in the bathtub before

Woodman:

-where does he get all his energy from? No idea

-"get off your phone, the weather is great outside, you should go play"

-plant dad, has like 30 different plants and flowers around the house

-doesn't allow pets for two reasons:

They'd mess with his plants, and thinks animals should live freely

-also has a garden where he grows all kinds of fruits and vegetables

-food is always fresh, his cooking is the best, makes sure you're getting a balanced diet

-recycling is a must, he'll whoop you if you litter outside as well

-you once killed a spider and he stayed mad/ sad for the rest of the day

Airman:

-newspapers and coffee kind of dad

-if you ask him something he'll either tell you to look it up or will talk about it for at least 2 hours, no inbetween

-dont scratch his ego, he takes pride in everything he does

-cleaning freak, will keep every corner of the house dust-free

-"go clean your room" "but i already cleaned it yesterday!"

- he'll try to raise a "perfect" child, might not realize what kind of pressure he puts you under

- in the end he just wants you to do well in the future
