Personal Interest

The following statement and photos were part of the last assignment of the semester for a photography class taken at Purchase College, Spring 2020.

This pandemic has changed us. I don’t know long we will be sheltered-in. I don’t know when the restrictions on our previously normal lives will loosen, and I don’t know what the new normal will be.  And although this experience will be life-changing, I am pretty sure I won’t remember many of the details of what happened during this very unusual time.  

I wanted to record something about this experience, how I noticed some details because I was moving more slowly, how quiet and still everything sometimes felt, how time sometimes seemed to stop and I would stare at something for what seemed like a very long time, and then how sometimes time seemed to slip between my fingers and I couldn’t remember what I did yesterday or when the last time I saw so-and-so or did what-ma-call-it.  

Now my life has two parts -- an outside life and an indoor life.  I can go outside.  Where I live I can walk in my neighborhood and easily stand more than six feel from a neighbor walking a dog.  I can practice social distance from strangers and try to maintain social connection with friends. I walk to the mailbox to send messages to keep in touch with some people, to remind them that I am thinking of them.  When “this” started, the weather was grey and cold. Now springtime is beginning. Lawns have turned green, flowers have bloomed, and springtime allergies have started. The outside is color.  I found a red wheelbarrow in my neighbor’s yard. I saw an empty bench and an abandoned swing set.  

Inside life is different. Many items are bland, monochromatic in shades of grey and white. I am not complaining. You can find beauty in bland, ordinary things. I spend a lot of time in my house by myself. I spend a lot time in my house with my computer with WNYC as company. I frequently eat dinner with Rachel Maddow. (In case you were wondering she never eats anything.  She is always talking.)  I appreciate the value of toilet paper. I stare at empty eggshells in white china. I notice the window light casting shadows on the stairs. I see folds in white sheets before they are put in the washing machine. I notice that my glass of water is half full.  The pandemic has changed us.

I’ve been doing a complete overhaul of my room and it’s finally done! I’ve got tons of office space and easy access to my supplies. While repainting and organizing I didn’t really have access to my computer or space to work. I’m relieved to finally sit down and work. To celebrate, I colored my earlier Digimon doodle.
