I requested the first book of a chorus of dragons from my library system :)

You know what? Entirely fair. Cath also said she thought I was 20 once, so apparently I’ve got 20 year old vibes!

Not quite sure why, but I think it could be attributed to my manner of speaking. Idk I’ve just frequently been told in professional settings that I go above and beyond and things like that, where’s it like yeah ur a words person. And they are right I am a words person.

Butterflies landing on your fingers seems relatively normal? Like that's not unusual imo

Am I the odd one out here are you all having butterflies land on your fingers?? Is that something you just do??

just looked up maps of butterfly populations and I literally live in the one singular sliver of the us where the butterflies don’t go, at least the monarchs. have I been missing out on something are butterflies just normal everywhere else?? I’ll see like six butterflies a year if I’m lucky but usually only one or two are there just?? More butterflies everywhere else??

we have lizards here, we catch small lizards in our hands we don’t have butterflies land on our fingers. Today I’m finding out that maybe Sophie’s comment about butterflies was weird to me and me only and you all just experience butterflies all the time

is this because I live in a desert or because I live in the foothills of a mountain either way I have never once in my life been in a situation where it was even remotely conceivable for a butterfly to land on any part of my body

I saw!! I was going to respond to the message but wanted to read it first, and by the time I’d read it you had already sent this ask so.

But!! My thoughts on it are that it’s absolutely incredible I simply adore this kind of style in writing. It’s like. A dream, almost. Where you get a vivid sense of what’s happening but it’s also vague and leaves you with so many questions, like you aren’t there but you’re watching yourself be there. It’s the kind of style I used for my fics Going Home and eyes beneath, so I have a certain fondness for it. As soon as I realized that was the hive your story had I literally went fuck yeah!! cause it’s so much fun

you so effortlessly immerse the reader into the unsettling horror of the story, like I forgot it was supposed to be horror going in because I was so excited so I got the full experience. It just crept up and as I read it was like…wait a minute…what’s happening here…why don’t I remember leaving the marks…why isn’t there a stop at 24th. Like it’s got that unsettling quality that unnerves you as you discover the extent of the horror and it is so well done

It’s also like an open concept, if that descriptor makes sense. Like I don’t know what happened here. I don’t know where the people went or how long I’ve been there, I don’t know what I did at the end of the story. It leaves so many possibilities, and I mean that as a good thing! It lets your mind conjure so many options and feels so foreboding and ominous, leaving you to fill in the gaps and feel like more a part of things

I know you said it was outside your comfort zone but I think you’ve done a phenomenal job! You achieve a very specific sense of dread, fear, confusion, and weary exhaustion so effectively in such a short span of time. Truly commendable; thank you for sharing it with me <3

I misinterpreted this at first to me that you were writing it with me and I sat here for a moment like…are we writing something together that I don’t know about? I’m gonna have to mentally prepare myself because I don’t have a great history of writing with others but that was also a while ago so perhaps now I’m more amenable

and then I realized you meant writing it with you as in the second person, which makes a lot more sense

#quil’s queries #an-ungraceful-swan #i am currently at the library and there is. a dog #must be a service dog #it’s v pretty this is why I’m telling you #i will not disturb I will only admire #anyway I once was writing a joint story with my best friend in middle school #which was great in some places (I love writing action and she hated it) #and horrible in the others. i was bad at writing consistently and also bad at working together #i think we both thought we were writing for a different age group #she was writing in a more middle grade style and I was writing in a ya style #neither is better than the other it just clashed the way we were doing it #i don’t even remember most of that story I think there were floating islands #it was called assassination: error 101 #and then there was another story but I don’t think that one was named #i still have all the files for it though I just haven’t looked at them in a while

Wait wait should it be like “they walked down the hall” or “you walk down the hall”

My thought is that it depends on how specific the reactions/actions the character(s) need to take are.

Because if you are writing a piece where, for example, the character is being chased by a monster and the only way to get through it to the next part you want to write is for them to bravely jump off a cliff, that’s going to take a lot of people out of the story. Because they wouldn’t jump off a cliff but this story made them do it, it introduces a sense of dissonance that can make the piece as a whole less immersive.

But if they’re just like…wandering down a hall and need to push open the single door at the end, for example, well that’s a sequence of actions that a lot more people would take and would sustain the immersion. Even if they start to take more specific actions later, you’ve kinda built that base

So I guess it just depends on your specific story and the vibe you’d like to portray. If you want the audience to feel like a part of the story drawn through it, then go for second person. Even if some immersion is broken, you can still tell a great story! Depends on how much you value it. And if you want to be more specific and nuanced with the characters actions, then go for third so the audience can watch and still be horrified and immersed watching everything play out.

That’s at least how I would personally approach and think about the decision, but feel free to completely ignore my musings! I hope your writing goes well <33
