Blackwater Dive

2024, hand bleached and dyed denim, cotton batting and thread

inspired by blackwater photography of plankton! this was my first time layering bleach painting. All the silhouettes were painted with bleaching gel, loosely tie dyed, and then bleached again to make the highlights. I quilted the piece using my free motion foot to outline each individual animal and tacked down the rest of the quilt with small satin stitches that remind me of marine snow. I dyed bias tape to match. super happy with this one and excited to show it in a gallery setting soon!

my grandma was a quilter and she said that there were a couple rules about making art which sounded …suspicious lol

but these were her rules:

whenever you can, take a class.

whenever you can, make art with other people. not collaborating necessarily, just spending time together making art

and that was it.

she was a very practiced and talented quilter, and she took classes and went to quilt groups often

she taught both me and my mom to sew (despite her being my paternal grandma) and my mom is also a talented quilter

I can’t count the amount of times I’ve learned something new when sharing the studio with someone (plus it’s a good way to spend time with friends)

Dream big panels have been around for years, we sold tons of them when I worked for a quilt shop. But I never saw a color that I was dying to have a go at until this fiery one. It was my project to wrap up 2023 and sneak in some free motion therapy. I loved every second of it. It’s edges are now trimmed and faced and it’s hanging in my living room. New year, new quilted art!
