And so spring has come to my country. It's warm at last and full of fresh green. Trees and shrubs are blooming. Pink and white blossom visited by bees and butterflies are so eye-catching that I feel tempted to take a lot of photos. And after many days of cold and rain it's very refreshing to take a walk in the sunshine, breathing in the delicate scent of white blossom.

Moar flowers! This time with what Reddit and I suspect is a Japanese quince with nothing but thorns and flowers on it, as a jagged counterpoint to the grass orchid's long smooth lines. It was an interesting exercise.

Say hello to my latest project: digitally restoring the Kaishien Gaden, better known as the Mustard Seed Garden Manual of Painting. Being one of the earliest instances of mass produced color printing in history, it lends itself beautifully to vector drawing.

I blew it up to 10k, put it up on Redbubble and now it's available on 80+ products! The complex quince flowers look particularly nice on textiles, leggings and shirts in particular, with a nice Zen touch to mousepads and coffee mugs.

Some plant news! I've been waiting impatiently to see if the stuff I planted last autumn had survived the winter, and it's looking good so far. All my young fruit trees are blooming (quince, cherry, apple, mirabelle)

The persimmon has no blossoms but some microscopic leaves, I hope it grows more vigorous... I only lost one baby chestnut tree, which seems to have been massacred by a very angry animal. A boar having a bad day? I'll have to plant a couple more this autumn and protect them better. I can just use the remains of one of the many types of fences that Pampe has defeated.

My greenhouse now has to wear a blanket in the afternoons so it doesn't get too hot inside. I planted four flowering shrubs around it in November, so their roots will consolidate the new terraces, and I'm happy to say they are all accounted for—these two have already doubled in volume, they seem thrilled to be there:

Whereas these two all but disappeared during the winter, the ground just swallowed them; I wasn't too optimistic but they showed up again last month, with timid new leaves :) (The pics are very zoomed in, the resurrected shrubs are about the size of my fist but I'm proud of them)

Also I found wild redcurrants by the stream last year and I snapped a few small branches and just stuck them in a pot without really believing it would work. Internet said it would work but it seemed impossible. I left the pot outside all winter, never watering it or taking care of it in any way, with these four bare sticks that I sometimes looked at dubiously. It worked!!! They have leaves now! I made new redcurrant plants by sticking branches in dirt, it feels magical. They're my favourite berries too...

(My project for next autumn will be to propagate elderberry cuttings alongside the fence.) And speaking of berries, I got to eat my first aquaponic-grown strawberry today, it was delicious <3 Congratulations to the 42 fish who are hard at work fertilising the plants in the towers. There are many more strawberries in preparation!

I leave the greenhouse doors open all day when it's sunny so there are pollinators busily flying in and out, doing their job. I tried to relocate a few ladybirds to the strawberry towers to eat aphids but without success, I think they left immediately...

My lettuce and tomato plants are doing great, but the courgette plants got decimated by slugs despite my efforts to repel them. I ended up buying some organic antislug product a friend of my mum's recommended. I started new courgette seeds, and I'll wait until they're bigger to transplant them to slug territory.

The little Mexican orange tree is blossoming, and finally making new leaves (the new ones are yellow) after looking worryingly bald for a while this winter. The blossoms really do smell like orange blossoms! I know it's right there in the name but I'm still like oh look at you you talented orange tree, you got the smell of your flowers right on the first try and everything

Congrats to Mascarille who was looking for the greenhouse entrance in the above pic (she always has to walk around it a few times, she's confused by glass walls) and eventually triumphed over adversity.

Oh and I'm still getting fresh peas, in homeopathic quantities. I found that they grow well in the middle of winter so I'll plant a lot more this autumn when the towers aren't full of strawberries and herbs; for now I've started just eating them raw like little green candy.

Last but not least, Louise Michel the new hen has finally learnt how to climb my homemade stairs that lead to the greenhouse! Look at her showing off her new skill, all casually like this problem hasn't stumped her for weeks:

“Jesús.”

The name was called from across the camp, a voice that inspired a myriad of emotions in almost everyone who heard it. Apprehension, joy, concern, fondness and uncertainty alike. It was a voice that had quickly become a part of daily life for Jesús, and he swung between emotions each time he heard it.

He put the saddle he was examining down carefully and dusted his jeans with sweaty palms. There was trepidation in his gut as he walked over to the owner of that voice.

“Yes, Señor Favor?” His voice was calm, thankfully, not betraying the sudden fear he was about to lose his job.

“C’mere, take a seat.”

Gil Favor was sat on a fallen tree, there was a small notebook on one knee, a pencil in one hand and an unlit cigarette in the other. He stared down at the open notebook, occasionally tapping the pencil on it.

Jesús sat. He kept a foot of space between them.

“Have I… done something wrong?” He asked. Silently he sent a prayer to the Blessed Mother for strength.

Señor Favor flicked his eyes up, the action only visible because his hat was by his feet, and frowned. “Wrong? No! No, not at all. I’m not tryin’ to tell you off, boy, far from it.”

“…oh.” Jesús swallowed and took his hat off. His heart started to beat wildly in his chest.

“Listen. I know I ain’t the most complimentary of men. I’m a bad tempered fool and I know it. But I like to think I’m fair.” He paused, turned his head and smiled at Jesús. His lips, though thin, curved pleasantly in the wide and generous smile. It was a handsome smile, one Jesús had often admired from afar. “Wanted to tell you you’re the best damn wrangler I’ve ever worked with.”

Jesús found himself grinning as well. “I am?”

The trail boss nodded and tucked his notebook back in his breast pocket. “You are. I know it’s been a hard drive, and I don’t want you thinkin’ you’re not appreciated. Or that you need to go kicking yourself for something that ain’t your fault.”

A hand, warm and large and firm, clasped his shoulder. The thumb rubbed across the tendon joining his shoulder to his neck, and Jesús nearly shivered.

“You’ve got a place here, for as long as you want it.” The taller man squeezed his shoulder again. “If you want it, that is.”

Jesús nodded. “I do want it,” he breathed, “to- to stay, I mean, Señor Favor.”

He saw the man’s eyes flick down and heat bloomed cautiously in his chest. Gil blinked and licked his lips. Jesús watched the movement. He saw the softening of his boss’ eyes, the way his jaw tightened as he swallowed. The hand on his shoulder loosened its grip and shifted. It drifted up, the thumb grazing the skin of Jesús neck. The breath caught in his chest and Jesús held himself still even as anticipation coiled around him, tight and warm and exciting.

Señor Favor blinked and drew away. He cleared his throat and dropped his hand, the warmth lingering on Jesús’ shoulder.

“Well. That- that’s all I wanted to say, really. Just… don’t go trying to throw your life away over a mistake that weren’t yours next time, got it?” He looked up as he spoke, his voice firm and just a little stern.

Jesús looked down at his hat and nodded. “Of course, Señor Favor.”

“Good,” he slapped his thigh and stood up, stretched his back with an audible pop. “I better get back to the herd, see how Quince is handling things.”

“I’ll saddle your horse-”

“No, no, its alright,” Gil held out a hand to stop him. “I got it. Get yourself something to eat, could be a long night. I think there’s some bad weather coming our way.”

Jesús watched him go, kept his eyes up instead of watching the sway of his hips, and let out a long sigh. On one hand, he was appreciated and valued by the one man it mattered most from. On the other, he knew that the attraction he felt went both ways. A dangerous situation to be in, indeed.

I was feeling very not myself and a little melancholy this morning but the weather was beautiful so I decided to go for a walk around the block and make a list of everything I saw that made me feel just a little bit better. I always find a certain comfort in the knowledge that nature continues to march on season after season, despite what life happens to throw our way.

So this is my list and if you’re having a bad day too, I hope maybe it will make you feel a little happier.

-old, wavy cobblestone sidewalks, broken apart by the roots of old trees

-andromedas drooping down in clusters of white over the ground

-daffodils and narcissus mixed together in happy little bunches

-robins, blue jays, mourning doves flying around and singing

-hyacinths blooming in every color

-the tiniest of grape hyacinths growing by the edges of the sidewalks, gardens, and fences

-the brightest yellow forsythia

-Tulips, petals opened wide

-giant magnolia trees with a bonus star magnolia spotted in full bloom

-ivy climbing up garden gates

-big, chunky bumblebees busy at work

-white and purple violets dotting the grass

-giant swaths of rhododendrons taller than me

Garden Report & Frugal Living 24.04.12

Today we managed to get a bucket of sand from the beach before the weekend rains appear. Also planted in pots some old seeds, really crammed them in thickly because I am so late and not sure if they will even germ . Note to self: harvest dates are important especially if you have a tendency like me to over purchase/horde seeds/trade seeds. And make sure they are sealed well! I spilled a great deal of Peshawar poppies because inner glaceing bag was haphazard and another bag of some sort of bean was in open plastic (is that mold or inoculation?). I planted out the beans thickly in a glow box not wanting to take up space for about 75 bean plants. If they come up it will indeed be a pleasant surprise! and even more if the voracious creatures stay off! So here is what is planted:

I have some black polish radish that is suppose to be sweeter than the spainish variety but those I need to direct sow.

The ants are still in grow box #2. I thought I had gotten them out last year but no such luck. I will need to find some terro boxlettes.

The purple asparagus has quickly sent up a spear. No sign of any others. I collected seeds off of it last year and I really should plant but I'm not sure I can commit to the slowness of it (about 8 weeks to germinate!).

There is so much I want to plant this year but I need a major clean and if I get settlement, there may be enough for roof but the tear off will generate a huge amount of waste and even with tarps down, many things will probably die due to impact and workers' boots so definitely can not do guerrilla gardening along the flower beds and shrubbery.

Currently foraging lilac blossoms. I dry them and place in jars for tea.

The quince is just loaded with blossoms! I have never seen this many flowers! We love quince so hoping for good pollination and much fruit. The red fleshed apple is starting to bloom as is the pears -- yes, the little asian pear may pull through! The raspberries are also starting to bloom. The pots I propagated last year need to find homes or be planted. I need to pull weeds from the white currant transplants. This is the year I need to transplant my little persimmons I grew from seed if they survived. They make a long tap root first so its essential to find a good spot -- no moving them around!!

Once again, too slow on the pruning! The birds are setting up housekeeping. The collared doves once again are trying to nest in the garden. I'm hoping that the neighbors will mellow out. They are becoming more aware of the songbirds that frequent my thicket (there really is a method to my madness... for some things).

Frugal tip: do you knit or crochet? do you want to learn but don't want to commit to a large project? got an old t-shirt? with a pair of cloth scissors, cut your t-shirt into a continuations ribbon about the width of your little finger or half that width. Roll your t-shirt 'ribbon in a ball. From the thrift store or if you have a crafters borrowering library get like maybe number 6-8mm knit needles/ crochet hook. Most craft stores also have economy priced needles/hooks if you want to invest and learn. You can knit/crochet a 'sample' sqare and use it as a wash cloth for your dishes. You can do this trying out new stitches as well with cotton yarns (look in thrift stores, rummage sales and craft discount sales). This way you are learning a new skill, recycling a spent object and hopefully being enthused and having fun. It might even become a hobby!

So my friends, get outside! Grow a garden, get a hobby and grow yourself in the process!
