August 24th - Kid Omega 

Quintavius ‘Quentin’ Quirinius Quire is a young Mutant and former student of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters.  An extremely powerful telepath, he became one of Xavier’s prized pupils.  His powers not withstanding, Quentin was an insecure and angry young man who tried to hide his poor self esteem behind a facade of arrogance and bravado.  After the Mutant fashion designer, Jumbo Carnation, was killed by a mob of bigots, Quentin decided the younger generation of Mutants needed to make a stand.  He adopted a Mutant supremacist attitude and attracted a group of followers among his classmates; all culminating in a violent riot at the school.  

Having overdosed on the power-amplifying narcotic, ‘Kick,’ Quentin lost control of his abilities and his psychic energies overwhelmed his corporal form.  His body appeared to die as his consciousness elevated to a different plane.    

Yet it turned out that Quentin did not die as his sentience remained within a containment device constructed by Hank McCoy.  Quentin was kept trapped in this device for months until he was awakened by the Phoenix Force which had returned to earth in search of Jean Grey.  The Phoenix Force had sensed Quentin’s telepathic abilities and mistook him for Jean; and the energy it bestowed on him allowed Quentin to remanifebt his corporal form.  

Some time later, Wolverine had established the Jean Grey School.  He took in Quentin believing that the young man was dangerous and it was best to keep an eye on him.  Herein, Quentin took on the new alias of ‘Kid Omega.’  Although he maintained his crass and dismissive attitude, the youngster was nonetheless motivated by Wolverine to be more heroic and selfless.  He ended up sacrificing a sizable portion of his powers in order to cure Jubilee of her vampirism.  

Kid Omega went on to join a short-lived reiteration of The West Coast Avengers and had a brief romance with the heroine GwenPool.

More recently, Kid Omega has relocated to Krakoa and has acted as Wolverine’s lieutenant for the special operations team, X-Force.  He entered into a relationship with Sophie of the Stepford Cuckoos, but she ultimately broke things off because her sisters did not approve of the affair.  

Kid Omega first appeared in the pages of New X-Men Vol. 1 #134 (2003).

i mean, what kind of angst-fueled teenager goes to a barber and a tattoo artist for his rebellious look needs? all you need is some clippers and dye, scissors (NOT fabric scissors) and a friend who swears he can do sick tattoos at home, and you’re ready to smash the establishment and accidentally-ish kill a bunch of people!

seriously though i think quentin’s canon riot look is kind of lame and feels wayy too calculated and clean for a 14-16ish year old looking to rage against the machine. let him look a little messy!

Summary: Quentin realizes he doesn’t know much about Gwen’s, well, anything really. He tries to learn more about it.

The day felt a little off-kilter. Quentin was idly floating himself to the dining room, with emphasis on idle.

He heard Gwen speak before passing through the archway. “Hey, Kate, can I use one of my vacation days?”

Quentin drifted on inside and sat himself down beside Gwen, which sat him across from Kate. The sight of cereal made his stomach grumble. “We don’t have vacation days, Gwen.”

“Well that’s just not legal. We’re an organization– an official organization that has payroll and are bound to the laws and stuff.”

On the other end of the table Clint took a sip of his coffee. Johnny bit into his toast with a large crunch. Kate sighed and made a loose thumbs up gesture. “I guess it won’t hurt anyone if it’s just for a day.”

Tell me about the marvel west advenger thing that pink haired computer nerd punk looks neat

he's so funny he's my skrungly i hate him. his name is quintavius quirinius "quentin" quire he is an omega level telepath he has pink hair and pronouns and he's a fucking asshole he's my favorite.

west coast avengers is a short-lived series (it's only 10 issues...you can read it in a few hours...) that centers around a reboot of the old WCA but this time it's hawkeye (clint barton edition) as the dadunclementor of a group of insane queer teens + young adults made up of gwen poole (gwenpool), kate bishop (hawkeye..two!), america chavez (america chavez), and johnny watts (fuse).

because of funding issues they're forced to let quentin into the team (he is rich as balls) even though he's making it into a reality tv show. then he ends up with gwen in part because gwen is desperately trying to not get her series cancelled (she is aware she is in a comic book because she was transported from our world to earth 616) it's a whole thing.

also it confirms clint barton is really into giant monster women.

Aside from the brief blip of excitement where he’d been able to unload several rounds of psychic bullets into the security personnel, their underwater adventure had been anything but. The only thing that staved off his complaining at the time was the fact that he, Fast Guy #6975, and Nightstar had been the team to find the control room. At least they’d done something. Count on the League of Too Many Superheroes and Scott Summers to overprepare sixty times over.

Most of the non-shooting, non-tech moments, Quentin had kept himself occupied anyway. M’gann had a greeting area in her mind that would’ve made any good, middle-aged suburban mom leap for joy. It was bright and quaint, heaped with perfectly green houseplants and too many throw pillows. There had been refreshments, too, and he’d spent a few good minutes banging out a rusty rendition of Chopsticks on the piano. He’d kept hoping to see her flinch while walking down the hall, but had eventually given up.

Even though it couldn’t have been further from Quentin’s style (neither the inner or the outer ones) he knew skill when he saw it. He’d felt it, too, and that was much more of a thrill for him than the mission would’ve been even if they’d been greeted by a whole damn army. He could’ve got that anywhere, but a telepath sharp enough to even leave him guessing...that was a fucking treat.

It was only once they were back to the surface and done with the godawful debriefing process that he had to put Martian Suburbia behind him. He couldn’t bring himself to leave before signing the guestbook, though, which he’d spotted not long after showing up in the first place. He fished around in one of the little white pull-out drawers and produced a fountain pen, filled just the right amount, and scrubbed the end against his tongue before pressing it down to the paper.

4/5 Stars. Cranberry scones were to die for. The high C on the upright is wobbly. One star deducted for locked room at the top of the stairs. Not enough pink. Call me for suggestions on improvement. #XXX-XXX-XXXX

Considering two of Quentin Quire's, like, formative romantic traumas are "my middle school crush would rather be dead than with me, like, literally," and "I watched a future version of my GF murder my future self in a suicide-by-X-Men because he couldn't stand living in a world where he would eventually have to fight and kill the third member of our love triangle, dooming her to become the next Apocalypse,"

I feel like a woman saying "I'm going to kill you" would not discourage his interest in her in the slightest.

I'm not sure her following through on the threat would even do that.

mostly my thoughts on the phoenix force are like

HUGE disclaimer my views on the phoenix are mostly shaped by excalibur vol1 and rachel as the phoenix host and i really recommend reading #52 and #61-65 of that run because it informs like. most of what i think about the phoenix, also if anything in a marvel comic contradicts my thots on this that comic is WRONG and i’m RIGHT because i know these things in my HEART

okay like i LOVE the phoenix. i love that it’s this unbeatable cosmic force made of life itself that learned to become human. in excalibur #52 the phoenix recounts the story of how it came to earth and how it possessed jean and, through jean, learned about humanity and human feelings and how eventually it saw the error of its ways in taking over jean’s life and stealing those experiences from her. the phoenix fell in love with scott but i think it’s also in love with jean.

issue #5 of phoenix resurrection has jean confronting the phoenix and i really like it. the phoenix isn’t human and in its own way it wants to be with jean, take away her pain and giver her the power to do whatever she wants without realising that’s not what jean wants. that’s what to me makes the difference in how it interacts with rachel so beautiful

like. the phoenix comes to rachel because it thinks she is jean, but it doesn’t take possession of her. the phoenix scrambles rachel’s mind to protect her from her traumatic past and then amplifies her powers to enable her to travel to a different world where she can have a happier life. the phoenix reads rachel’s past and learns about her traumas and her life and it chooses to protect her and help her. whether this is the right way to do it is debatable but like. it’s not human it doesn’t know about therapy lol. like the phoenix chooses rachel and in return rachel chooses the phoenix

the phoenix took control of jean’s body and life, learned from that, and moved on to truly bond with her daughter in a completely new way, and when it realises that by being sentient and aware of itself it’s leeching away at the power of the universe, it gives up its sentience and gives over its power to rachel completely

rachel was never corrupted by the phoenix force and i think that’s because the phoenix cooperated with her and became a part of her. when the phoenix gives all its power to rachel and becomes part of her, it also gives rachel her complete memories back, giving her agency and power and control over her life that she’s never had before, and trusts her to do good. the phoenix believes in rachel to use its power wisely

and there’s just something that i love about rachel, who doesn’t have a mother and had to watch her mother die in different universes (thanks, excalibur cross time caper lol), who is so alone and abandoned and doesn’t know her place and had to go through all these horrific things in her own timeline being chosen by the phoenix, who learned humanity FROM rachel’s mother, as someone who it wants to protect and nurture and give another chance at life. the phoenix loves rachel and understands her and thats why it gives itself to her, and rachel in return accepts that power instead of fighting against it. i think the phoenix is in love with jean, and in turn loves rachel like a daughter. that’s why it can become part of rachel and give itself to her completely, and i love the idea of rachel having her cosmic mother figure love and trust her like this.

and that love and trust that exists/existed between them is why rachel is the perfect phoenix hosts and why nobody can do it like her! why nobody else can take the phoenix and hold it in them for as long as she did! they CHOSE each other, they’re mother and daughter. the phoenix gave rachel power and agency, where it took agency away from jean and every other host.

this kind of trust doesn’t exist between the phoenix and its other hosts, and that’s why it corrupts everyone else. other phoenix hosts may have the physical capacity to take on the phoenix, but they don’t have the perfect bond that rachel had that enabled them to TRULY wield the force.

i think quentin may come in third as a host but only because he has the physical capacity and he’ll NEVER be a true host bc he’ll never have that bond with the phoenix and the phoenix doesn’t truly love him, he’s just a replacement for jean and rachel. that’s pretty much canon btw, check out this page from battle of the atom #2 which is like. one of my favourite pages in all comics (quentin here is a future, adult quentin who has had the phoenix force for years, and “xorn” is an alternate future jean grey)

jean may have been the first phoenix hosts, but rachel is the only TRUE phoenix host.

also before marvel decided that the phoenix was a fun power buff and not like a cosmic being with agency and thoughts and feelings and motivations and a backstory rachel could just put the phoenix into people who wanted it and they exploded bc they didnt have the physical capability and that was fucking awesome
