So seeing as the trailer is finally out and one of my more frequently revisited posts is about this movie let's talk the trailer. Now these are off the cuff barely put together ramblings with like an hour to think on it so don't take this as a final verdict or my hardest stance ever.
The Good
- It looks generally alright. There is some clear signs someone was flipping through the art book for the War For Cybertron games when designing a lot of this stuff. As well I'm interested to see how the 'surface' is seeming to be overgrown with plant life and the like.
- Alpha Trion and some sort of grave, of the other 13?, shows up and seems like they are going with the G1 style of him making Optimus and Elita into their present selves, just adding Megatron and Bumblebee there.
- Elita One even getting to be a major player is pretty neat. Really a rise to prominence from a time when I think people didn't even know female characters existed before Arcee.
- Also Quintessons seeming to be an oppressive class enslaving the Cybertronians is another good G1 call back.
- Also having both Orion and M-16 start as workers is nice since it means you can't accuse Optimus of not knowing just how bad the system was when he opposes Megatron going full Peace Through Tyranny.
The Bad
- The dialogue, like you know it, I know it, and everyone else knows it. Now to start not saying Transformers can't be goofy or funny, '80s film everyone has a dance party to Weird Al and fandom loves the hell out of that movie. But that felt more organic to G1s general sillier side versus this where it feels the writers looked up a bunch of posts satirizing later stage MCU diaologue and thought "yes let's do that".
- Bumblebee being there, since seems he is just being shoved in as comic relief and cause marketers love Bumblebee versus a fourth main character being needed for this story.
The Fear
This is more speculation on from what the trailer presents could be bad about the film but I can't say 100% from the trailer.
- Elita One being in the movie being reduced to other three main characters are going to spend parts of the movie having the hots for her or the plot being configured into any kind of terrible love shape. (I will barely accept a love triangle with Orion and M-16 if those two are also onto each other. Transformers made enough strides in LGBT rep to not back slide into the worst of Het writing now.)
- Bonus negative points if Elita One getting hurt or dying is used as the final straw for Optimus and Megatron's relationship breaking apart.
- The reveal of the names Optimus Prime, Megatron, and Elita One not being allowed to be good moments and instead get ruined by shitty jokes (Like how the RWBY/Justice League film had to constantly make jokes about Superman being called Superman. I get it writers are so above silly naming schemes like that in the 2020s now, but just shut up)
- Speaking or other things that are atrocious I'm worried this movie is going to pull a Devil May Cry reboot and just have Megatron swerve into "I wanna be Big Dick Dictator of the Galaxy" two seconds after they beat the Quintessons like how Fedora!Vergil went "I'm actually evil and we should now in some vague way rule the world Dante" right after the 'Kingpin From Marvel but turned into a giant made of buildings' boss fight. So no time will be given to the deteriorating state of Orptimus' and Megatron's relationship before hand. That or they sequel bait the downfall and we have to cross our fingers it was good enough to get a sequel.
- The Quintessons will have their menace damaged by bad pot shot jokes/references to the original animated movie.
- We spend all movie with MCU quips Bumblebee but Starscream never shows up.
The Hope
But that is all nerves and speculation as so far I've just seen a single trailer. So what about positive possibilities.
- The major one is the trailer is just cut by brainless add executives and a lot of the worst quips are either not in the movie or there is way more good dialogue and the stuff in the trailer was all of it.
- They actually do give some other members of the Decepticons appearances and completing backstories of their own.
- Optimus and Megatron are in unambiguous romantic love before the big break up.
- They do some really interesting stuff with the lore based on some of that cool environmental design. Perhaps a more interesting version of Megatronus for Megatron to be inspired by?
- Lastly this film just needs to clear the low bar set by most of the Bay Films to not be bad at this point. And I highly doubt this movie can do anything to hit the "Your Racist Uncle" level of some Revenge of the Fallen scenes or "Mmm I sure do love high school girls" level of the first one and especially Age of Extinction scenes.

Transformers Cyberverse be like:
Autobots: *try to kill Decepticons*
Decepticons: *try to kill Autobots*
Quintessons: *try to kill everyone*
Autobots&Decepticons: *gasp* I'm the only one allowed to do that!!!
And then they have a silly dance party at Maccadam's before pretending to hate each others again.

I don't think survival normally includes attacking the enemy from behind, but there's some times when you gotta improvise

Thinking about Mandroid's final form has got me thinking:
I don't think energon poisoning turned him into this, I think he was being turned into something.
In fact, given the celphalopod like features of Mandroid's final form within the mech he's in, I'm convinced he was being transformed (for lack of a better word) into a Quintesson. His stretchy limbs, the hands with fangs on the palm and his weird appearance while wearing a mech suit seems to hint that, given how in earlier media, Quintessons have been portrayed as wearing mech or being biomechanical in nature, while also sporting attributes similar to squids and octopi. Yeah, I think he was slowly becoming one, but somewhere along the way he betrayed them, if they were the ones who were oppressing the Sharkticons.
However, one of the more interesting things is that none of the Transformers present where like "is that a friggin' Quintesson?!" Although that could be summed up as most of them were taken out by Croft's device, I still think it holds out because you'd think Shockwave would notice which brings me to the thought that in this continuity, no one is aware of the Quintesson's existence, no one knows of Quintus Prime's interactions with them. This has brought me to believe that if the Quintessons are the villains of season 2, they are going to act like they are friends of Quintus and the Transformers, only to double cross them. At this point, given the importance of Quintus Prime to the plot, I won't be surprised if we learn that Cybertron was conquered by the Quintessons during the period between the destruction of the space bridge and the time that Earthspark begins.

A lot of mini-bots (and quite a few other bots) have what might be considered neurodivergent traits (or have been confirmed as such), and I wonder if certain frame types or classes --or Cybertronians in general-- might have physically type-specific processor structures which allow for greater diversity of thought, and if some frame types or spark types might be more or less likely to have or develop neurodivergent traits
We know the Quintessons fucked with the Well of All Sparks in the Aligned Continuity which had unknown effects, and in IDW 1 given the spark as the core of a person's individual spirit (for lack of any better phrasing), it would make sense for Cybertronian sparks to imbue individual personality etc. while the processors are physical hardware with software flexibility to permit and adapt to those unique aspects of self
For example, in the continuities where spark development influences protoform development and therefore what type of frame a bot might ultimately have, it is still simultaneously possible to alter a frame to some degree with armour changes, mass manipulation, etc. (and in most continuities, alt-modes can be altered as well, to at least some degree within the range of someone's core specs)
But the processor and spark are the two things that generally (although we have seen some exceptions to this) cannot be physically altered without incurring significant damage-- Making them some of the few constant components in a species designed to physically change
Sparks have significant individual variation in terms of the personality etc. that evolves from each unique spark, so perhaps processors have some physical elements designed to best accommodate a certain frame type, while also allowing for individual experiences and perception etc. to form unique thought pathways for each individual -- This would allow for any Quintesson or Functionism-related frame alterations or requirements, while also still enabling a spark to produce a unique person as it forms and as experiences accumulate
Sort of like genetics vs epigenetics in human beings; Some things are physical and structural, but some things are informed by environment, experience, etc.
It's interesting that we do seem to see a lot of mini-bots specifically who might fall into a neurodivergent category or exhibit behaviours or thought process that might reasonably fall under the category, but of course it's not universal so there is still greater variation
Although characterisation varies from series to series, here's a couple examples:
Cliffjumper tends to have impulse control problems that are sometimes similar to ADHD impulse control problems, and he sometimes has difficulty prioritising or hyperfixates on one aspect of a situation, leading him to reach the wrong conclusion or focusing on the slightly wrong thing; He also struggles to manage frustration. This could all be related to something similar to executive dysfunction, as it commonly manifests in humans with ADHD.
Bumblebee seems to be conflict-avoidant to some degree in most continuities, and aside from that being part of his friendly nature and kind disposition, it might also hint at something similar to rejection sensitive dysphoria, or a greater sensitivity and emotional response to perceived interpersonal conflict or perceived failure. Some versions of Bumblebee have particularly struggled when faced with high stakes/high risk of failure scenarios, and he has a tendency to internalise blame, directing it towards himself even when a failure is not necessarily his fault or even truly a failed mission. This is often comorbid with Autism and ADHD in humans, but it can also exist on its own.
It's not just mini-bots; Misfire canonically has ADHD in IDW 1, Geomotus in IDW 2 is Autistic and his neurodivergency is even highlighted by other characters, and so on.
So all of this (and how it might work) varies from continuity to continuity, but I just like thinking about how neurodivergent bots do exist, and how that happens and how it manifests and how it is perceived by others and by society at large is interesting
In IDW 2, neurodivergency seems to be viewed in a more understanding and positive light. But in IDW 1, neurodivergency may be viewed in a more ableist way under the Functionist system, and in the Aligned Continuity, perhaps neurodivergency is seen as a potential indication of Quintesson alteration of the Well or of the individual themselves (this would depend on a bot's age).
We don't have too many details on Cybertronian medicine in general, but it's interesting to think about!
It's 8 AM I'm gonna go have a tea now lol

Tarn Leading Decepticons because all of High Command got locked on Earth and it was him, Strika, or Deadlock both of whom said "not it" and now Tarn is being summoned to be sworn in with trumpets and a crown and throne and is deeply, deeply traumatized by this conceptually.
Vaguely TFE Decepticons and everything going very, very wrong.
He shows up after working away ten years, finds out Megatron went Autobot and then that he's putbof reach and all of High Command is assumed dead but hey they have life on the planet again, gets sworn in andthe All Spark immediately goes missing from where Strika secured it, then Autobots attack to steal it back so they don't have it and during this the Quintessons show up to invade, and now he is constantly near tears being relentlessly bullied by Jazz, Ironhide, Deadlock, and Strika (Ultra Magnus, Chromia, Kup, and Obsidian are generally nicer) while praying desperately for anyone, even Starscream to come take command from him.
He despises that young Autobots Thunderclash and Hot Rod are the two most sympathetic to him and writes increasingly graphic fantasies about revenge against his deadbeat Mom Megatron for leaving him with this.
Tarn is the youngest person on this war council, and no one lets him forget it. The DJD are trying to be supportive of their baby leader, but literally only Kaon's skills translate to usefulness with him and Blaster filling in Soundwave's role.
See you got exactly which continuity I've been testing this for
Both of whom said "not it"
Exactly, Tarn got the short stick
Yesssss on Tarn being practically on autopilot and questioning everything the entire time. He will not admit he misses Megatron (at least not in those exact words)
Tarn: Lord Megatron I'm home, whe— what the frag happened here where is my Lord
Yesss on this exactly being when the Quintessons invade, the planet is vulnerable and rebuilding, perfect time to interrupt it.
Sdghj love the little idea here that yes, faction means nothing right now beyond "we need to beat the shit out of the Quintessons and get them off of our planet first thing's first" and Tarn is having such a time of it
Sfgjk yes the angry rants he writes to himself, typical Tarn behavior. Oooo on him being relatively younger in this au? Oo?
Absolutely no one lets him forget it. Strika who packs his lunch and he consistently makes a fuss about it (in her defense she wouldn't have to if the fucker didn't keep forgetting to fuel)
The DJD are trying😁

I think I've said something along these lines before but. Hrghnnnn functionalist hell au where hotlock are breeding bitches in a facility for making prize-winning racers. With noncon artificial insemination ^_^
Alternatively, quintessons invade at the beginning of the war au, Deadlock and Hot Rod are racer breeding bitches in neighboring cells... I love imagining them trying to rub their tender and aching pussys against each other, swollen bellies anf tits bumping together...
