Here for you guys Scrooge the Hedgehog 😂
Tumblr media
IDW is confirmed to be canon thanks to this mention, and Jewel mention too, of the robots friends of Amy, because effectively Belle is her friend, if we count also Gemerl and Gamma
Tumblr media
Amy blush (and before to kill Sonic 😂 because he has hams in front of the eyes ) ----> Amy who now resigns and accepts Sonic as he is (even with hams in front of her eyes 😂 in addition, I love when Sonic and Tails laugh together 🥹💕)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The confirmed canon is the ending of Final Horizon where Sage is alive then at the end they have chosen to make this ending the most acceptable for all of us and is no longer a : " what if? in addition the secret Santa of Eggman is Tails 😭💞" (P.S. how is sweet Sage that wants to do some family activities with Eggman 🥹💕??)
Tumblr media
Well now we know who Sonic's favorite hot dog vendor is (he even knows the jingle by heart and I loved hearing him sing it 😍💕) and apparently Knuckles loves practical things like gifts, in this case the coupon
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Awwwwwww even if done quickly at the end gave him a gift though....
Tumblr media
Eggman you served it to yourself on a silver platter 😂
Tumblr media
(Little bonus)
In the library you can see Cosmo's vase (again) and the packet of mint candy appearing in one of the official Sonic pict , this goes to confirm even more that these Sonic pict are canon and not a fandom of SEGA itself and thus the image of Sonic in which Cosmo's vase appears, is not put as a "quote" but solid evidence that Sonic X is canon in its own way

It has come to my attention that today is
♠️ Ace Day ♠️
And in honour of my being way too obsessed with the man, I will award a character the highest honour I can bestow:
Tumblr media
Frederick Fire Emblem is acespec and you can't change my mind. He may be demi, may be gray, may be garden variety ace, but either way he's on the ace spectrum.
As evidence, I offer you a read more with quotes:
Fred's supports with Olivia...
Olivia: No, I'm not talking about being a soldier. What I mean is...What do you think of me as a woman? Frederick: Do I find you attractive? Is that your meaning? Olivia: I suppose so, yes. Frederick: Hmm... A difficult question, if I may speak bluntly. I'd not thought of you in such terms before, and so cannot provide a meaningful answer.
Frederick: I must say, milady, having spent so much time with you recently, I... Well, I am starting to see why the others found you so charming. Olivia: Y-you are? Frederick: Yes, I am. Olivia: Erm, I don't suppose you could tell me exactly what you like about me? [...] Frederick: May I have time to put it into words? My feelings on the subject are still...vague.
...In which Fred is completely unaware of the supposed charms of a dancer widely regarded to be quite attractive, until he really gets to know her and thinks Really hard about it.
And also, his early Chrom supports...
Frederick: [...] Ah, and one final thing: I've taken measures to raise troop numbers and morale. I had an artisan create posters emblazoned with your noble image. It's milord in a bold pose - naked, save a scale in one hand and a sword in the other. And at your feet, I scrawled our new recruiting motto: "Chrom Wants You!" I had them pinned inside each and every tent. Surely the troops will be thrilled to rally behind their common leader, milord. Chrom: ...Wait. You did what?! In whose... You hung this pict... In EVERYONE'S tent?! Frederick: No need for thanks, milord. Merely doing my duty. And that concludes my report. Rest well, sire! Chrom: F-Frederick! Wait! We really need to... talk. ...Oh, gods.
Frederick: My deepest apologies, milord. Had I known you'd run from tent to tent rending the posters, I never would have— Chrom: Gods, I've never been so embarrassed in all my days! My sister nearly pulled a muscle laughing!
...In which Fred appears to be completely, hilariously oblivious to the connotations of a naked poster captioned that the subject "wants you". Classic fire emblem hyperbolization of the classic ace unawareness of the preoccupation with and importance of sex in the rest of the world's minds. He's genuinely sorry afterward, it apparently just didn't cross his mind that that is not inspiring in the way he expects.
Look into your heart, reader, you know this to be true. This man is ace.

Random talks about the Arg NT 🇦🇷 : part 1
Tumblr media
I start this random talk by mentioning Licha’s statement about him hugged Rapha on WC final. I was like, well okay, because I won’t forget how Argentina won Copa America 2021 because Angel Correa passed on information about one of the Brazil players (Renan Lodi) that also his (&Rodri’s) then- Atleti clubmate to which somehow that info became crucial for La Scaloneta in winning the trophy 😭😭
Tumblr media
So yeah, be friend with them just fine on your club, but spying on them proly will be useful for your NT. Who knows if one day your clubmate become Argies' opponent 👀
+I know karma is a bitch well just make sure it will never be tit for tat to our side 🤞
Tumblr media
Next random thing I want to talk about is how I find it ironically interesting that one of the reasons AFA chose Qatar University Hostel as La Scaloneta's WC homebase was because the institution is the perfect place to hold a bbq party (Asado). It's knowing they chose happy tummy over the chance to sleep lavishly that makes me love them even more ಥ‿ಥ
Tumblr media
As for the France side, I called it ironic because although staying in somewhere luxurious, but bad luck still followed this team as few days before final somehow The French players got affected by some flu virus that weakened their physiques. It had been the talk of the town tho Deschamps didn’t blame that condition as reason why his team played badly on final.
Tumblr media
Last random thing I want to talk about is the current performance of these World Champs on their clubs post-World Cup.
So far, I heard that many of them doing good. From Foyth, El Toro, Alexis, Julian, Enzo, Acuña, to the GOAT himself Leo Messi, everyone scored. Those who aren’t scoring yet also did a great job; several names are Dybala, Di Maria, Lea, Licha, and Dibu too 🔥
Right now, what I really wish the most is, they will give all their best damnedest peformance while playing for their clubs. Not solely for the sake of their club but more for them (this is an ill-thought coming from my evil personality), cuz they need to and have to do whatever it takes to secure their position on the NT.
On club-level let them compete to each other, because once they back to Ezeiza, all those talks about "who is the better player", or "who deserves to play as a starter" (hopefully) will be cease to exist.

13th February 862 Kenneth MacAlpin who united the Picts and Scots in one kingdom, died at Forteviot.
His reign is given in the Pictish Chronicle as twenty eight years, considering the violent uncertain times I think it was a lengthy, successful reign.
When posting about history this far back it is difficult as there was nothing written down about it back then, well  not much of it, in the sense of a written contemporary record of the foundation of the country that we now call Scotland, and there is certainly no Scottish record of any kind dating from the court of the early kings in the ninth century. The chroniclers that I like to quote tio fill up posts with contemporary information did not start till much later. So with posts like this I am sometimes scrambling between many sources, which in truth  really don’t know the facts, so if you disagree with the story I am just going to shrug my shoulders and say- okay then.
If we ask the question who was the first king of Scotland, most folk with a bit of knowledge might say  Kenneth MacAlpin, and in the oft-reproduced regnal list of Scottish kings he is named as Kenneth I. Except that his name was not Kenneth but Cinaed mac Ailpin – which is why I scored out the name, anyway we will call him Kenneth to avoid confusion – and there is no contemporary Scottish written account of his kingship.
That may be due to several reasons, for example written records were not kept because of the oral history tradition of the peoples who occupied what is now Scotland in the eighth, ninth and 10th centuries. Various predators such as the Vikings and the English invaders of later times – notably Edward I, as we know Longshanks ordered the destruction of Scottish records – plus the loss of church documents over the centuries and especially at the Reformation mean that we have precious few writings about the facts of the foundation of the Kingdom of Scotland, and most of those are by English or Irish chroniclers or Scots writing unreliably some centuries after the events of ‘facts’ which in many cases are just legends.
Wikipedia says that Kenneth “was a king of the Picts who, according to national myth, was the first king of Scots.”  Wiki is as ever unreliable, because it mentions a “national myth” when we do know that there was almost certainly a king later identified as Kenneth and that he apparently did unite the kingdoms of Dalriada and Fortriu into a kingdom.
Quhen Alpyne this kyng was dede, He left a sowne wes cal’d Kyned, Dowchty man he wes and stout, All the Peychtis he put out. Gret bataylis than dyd he, To pwt in freedom his cuntre!
The short verse above is taken from Orygynale Cronykil of Scotland by the 15th-century author Andrew of Wyntoun, it is one of the earliest accounts of Kenneth’s noble deeds. Most of what is known today has been pieced together by historians.
Kenneth was born sometime between 800 and 810 AD. His father was King Alpin II of Dalriada (Dál Riata), a Gaelic kingdom founded in 500 AD by Irish invaders led by Fergus Mor. At the time of Kenneth’s birth, the Gaels were dominated by the powerful Pictish Kingdom. Kenneth’s mother was, according to legend, a Pictish Princess of extraordinary beauty. Alpin II was ultimately beheaded by the Gaels for fighting on the behalf of a Pictish King, the second most hated enemy of the Gaels (after the Vikings). Little is known about Kenneth’s parents but there is reason to suspect that Alpin abandoned his comrades for love of the unnamed Pictish Princess, an act that cost him his life.
Around the same time that Alpin was killed in the battles between the Picts and the Gaels, the Viking raids became increasingly frequent and ferocious, perhaps because they knew many of the land’s men were otherwise engaged.  By 839 AD the Pictish kingship was almost entirely wiped out by Viking warriors. It is here that Kenneth enters the story. Many fighters sought to fill the vacuum of power and become the next king. Kenneth sought to claim the Gaelic and the Pictish throne, both of which he had some right to. However, according to legend, he was challenged by the seven royal houses of the Picts, especially the Pict Drust X.
Caught between the Gaels and the Vikings, the Picts knew that they needed a strong leader so a great meeting was called at Scone at which all of the claimants to the Crown were to attend, including Kenneth. The story goes that “the alcohol flowed freely at the meeting. Then, in what has since been referred to as Mac Alpin's treason, Drust and the Pictish nobles were all killed by the Scots: allegedly (and improbably) by having their booby-trapped benches collapsed so Kenneth's rivals plunged into pits in the floor and impaled themselves on spikes set there for the purpose” (Undiscovered Scotland, 2016).
This probably did not happen – the engineering feats alone seem hard to believe – but Kenneth most likely did kill, one way or another, all of his rivals to the throne. “What is fairly clear is that at some point between 839 and 848 AD Kenneth (with blood claims to both thrones) claims the kingdoms of the Picts and the Gaels”
Kenneth became the first king of the House of Alpin, named after his father. His lands included the Pictish Fortrio region and the Gaelic Dál Riata kingdom. Kenneth dubbed his new kingdom Scotia (in Gaelic, Alba). Yet, just because he was now the undisputed king did not mean peace was anywhere near in sight. Young Scotia was surrounded by hostile enemies: to the north were the highlanders, called the Men of Moray; to the west were the Irish, lying in wait to reclaim Fergus Mor’s conquest; to the south was the Anglo-Saxon realm of North Umbria; and at all times in all places, especially on the coasts and the islands, there was the threat of a Viking invasion.
It was this last threat that was most worrisome for King Kenneth MacAlpin. Legend has it that a huge fleet of 140 Viking ships was headed toward Dál Riata, intend on destroying the Gaels once and for all. With surprising speed and foresight, Kenneth order to Gaels to collect all of their religious relics (including the treasured remains of St. Columba) and move them to the safety of the interior Pict lands, once enemy territory but now unified. Scotia’s ecclesiastical capital was thus transferred from the coastal Iona to the interior Dunkeld. At this time, “Dál Riata vanishes from the chronicles and we only hear of Pictland from this point”
The Gaels took a risk in trusting the Pictish king and Kenneth made certain to reward them for their faith in him. He distributed among his Gaelic supporters’ lands that had been taken from his defeated rivals. The Pictish commoners may have resented their new Gaelic landlords but Kenneth did not give anyone the chance to rekindle old ethnic rivalries. What was needed now was unity, “something the Picts and Gaels had in common, to define them as a single people, and, as is so often the case throughout history, this came in the form of a common enemy” (BBC, 2014). Fortunately for nascent Scotland, Kenneth had this in spades. He rallied his people to fend off the Viking attacks and even launched raid or two of his own across Hadrian’s Wall into Anglican North Umbria.
Kenneth died in 858 A.D. of natural causes (most likely a tumorous cancer). He was buried on the island of Iona and succeeded by his brother, Donald I. The Kingdom of Alba lasted until 1296 when the English invaded.
The historians say Kenneth was the  34th great-grandfather of the current King “Charles III”
My friend Colin asked about sources I used, I don’t normally post them all, usually one is suffice, but I will post a few this time

the loch ness monster
alr so im uk based and therefore i am a huge fan of nessie, shes up there in one of my favourite cryptids so i figured shed be a good first one of these posts so the style night change for the first couple posts like this until i get into the swing of it but lets fuckin go lads (all used sources will be listed at the end or linked when using a direct quote <3)
Nessie (also known more professionally as The Loch Ness Monster but whom I will solely refer to affectionately as Nessie) is a creature within Scottish folklore who inhabits Loch Ness. There are varying depictions of Nessie, however commonalities remain such as the typical long neck and one or more humps that show up from beneath the water. The existence of Nessie has never been proven (unfortunately) and is primarily anecdotal, with many debated photographs and sonar readings accredited as proof.
The first written account of Nessie existed in literally 565AD (that is fuckin wild). It occurs in a biography of St Columba, however, earlier local stone carvings of the creature by the Pict depict a flippered beast. In the biography of Columba, it is stated that the creature bit a swimmer and prepared to attack another man when Columba intervened, sending the creature away.
The story of Nessie really developed in 1933, a road alongside Loch Ness had just been developed, providing people driving along with a clear view of the lake. In the April of that year a couple saw a creature there which they compared to a "dragon or prehistoric monster" also claiming it crossed their car's path before disappearing into the water. This was reported in a Scottish newspaper and numerous sightings were claimed to have followed. In the December of that year, the Daily Mail then commissioned Marmaduke Wetherell, who was a big game hunter, to locate Nessie.
Along the shore of Loch Ness, Wetherell found large footprints that he believed belong to “a very powerful soft-footed animal about 20 feet [6 metres] long.” The footprints were then investigated by zoologists at the Natural History Museum and were believed to be made with an umbrella stand or lamp that had a hippopotamus leg as the base. There is no clear information of Wetherell's role in the hoax. Once this was proven and casts had been made, Wetherell was publicly ridiculed by the Daily Mail for this.
The news of this hoax, however, only seemed to motivate more efforts to look for and find evidence of the existence of Nessie.
The infamous "Surgeon's Photograph" of Nessie was reportedly taken by Robert Kenneth Wilson and depicts the trademark long neck associated typically with Nessie as seen below. This hoax was aided in no small part by the Daily Mail themselves, who published the photograph incredibly zoomed in, making it seem as though the alleged "creature" was somewhat bigger and to the scale witnesses had described Nessie to be. Wilson's photograph was actually revealed to have been lead by a vengeful Wetherell, the subject of the photograph actually being a plastic and wooden head tied to a toy submarine.
Tumblr media
side by side of the "Surgeon's Photograph", the one on the left being the one published by the Daily Mail and the one on the right being the original picture
As a result of the "Surgeon's Photograph," it was speculated that Nessie may be a plesiosaur. A plesiosaur is a type of prehistoric, long-necked marine reptile of which fossils were found from between the late Triassic period to the late Cretaceous period (i.e. from 255 mil years ago to 66 mil years ago.)
Thanks to the popularity of Nessie, the area of Loch Ness has attracted many cryptid hunters. Many sonar searches have been committed in Loch Ness, notable ones being in 1987 and 2003, however none have turned up any proof of Nessie.
In 2018 researchers did a DNA comparison of creatures within the loch to determine the organisms that live in the water and by comparing with their database, seem to have ruled out the possibility of a plesiosaur, or any similar large creature, however a new theory was posed that Nessie may be a giant eel. The aim of this study was to determine the wild life that does reside in Loch Ness, rather than trying to determine if Nessie does, but it does remain beneficial to the cause.
The theory of Nessie being a giant eel has some merit as Juvenile eels (known as elvers) arrive in Scottish lochs and rivers after migrating from the Sargasso Sea where they typically lay eggs. Professor Neil Gemmel, a geneticist from the University of Otago in New Zealand who worked on the DNA comparison said, "Eels are very plentiful in Loch Ness, with eel DNA found at pretty much every location sampled - there are a lot of them." Therefore the likelihood of Nessie possibly being an eel is quite high. Later in the article, Gemmel goes onto say however that they are unaware the size of the eels in the loch however. Therefore, while Nessie could be a giant eel, unfortunately there is still no way of knowing.
While I have covered the history of Nessie and possibilities of what Nessie could be, a whole new post could be dedicated to just sightings of Nessie, so for now I'm just going to drop the link to the official log of sightings
(Side note: Nessie makes up a lot of money regarding Scotland's Tourism and on behalf of Nessie I am very sad she doesn't get any)
If you want to request a cryptid, send me more info or correct any info, or even just say hi, send me an ask, if you have a post submission or something similar, my submissions box is open <3
I do this for fun in my spare time so if you liked this and/or learned something pls like and/or rb <3

Hi! Thanks to one of your latest posts I researched the quote on Karen Marie Moning's book and found this twitter thread about the mentions of Basque in the novel. Sharing in case you are interested twitter(.)com/nymeriassun/status/1533455118397489153
Kaixo!!
Thanks for the link, here's the thread and we couldn't agree more:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We'll add that the half Basque half Pict mysterious and barbaric sexy beast is Jericho Z Barrons, and let's read what we have to know bout him. From the author's page:
JERICHO BARRONS: Main character. One of a group of immortals who reside in Dublin, many of them at Chester’s nightclub, and is their recognized leader (...). Six feet three inches tall, black hair, brown eyes, two hundred forty-five pounds, date of birth October 31, allegedly thirty-one years old, his middle initial is Z, which stands for Zigor, meaning either “the punished” or “the punisher” depending on dialect.
Depending on dialect.
Where do we begin?
Zigor is a real Basque name for men, and it means punishment. Period. Depending on the dialect - as stated on the site - it can be zehapen or zentzabide.
We don't know if any language has the exact same word for the one who acts and the one who recieves the action, but Basque hasn't.
Punisher = zigortzaile
Punished = zigortua
We guess "depending on the dialect" means "according to myself" but in a higher register.
And we don't wanna repeat the Sustrai drama with this but please, stop giving fake meanings to actual Basque words just because that way they serve your creative purposes better.

Just finished watching the entire James Bond Craig's version and Mission Impossible francise in less than 3 night I think? And because I am bored I'll just make my own canon or just theory?
And am I the only one who find the similliarities in these two francise Like....
The serious "kinda* grumpy, and hot male protagonist
Tumblr media
Ethan Hunt and James Bond. Both of them was a rebellious agent, great spy, charming men with a very great charisma. And sometimes a little bit grumpy
The Opera Scene
Tumblr media
Looks familiar? Even if you hasn't seen both of this movies in a very long time, you maybe can't tell which one is?
The first pict is from Mission imposibble rogue nation (2015) and the 2nd pict is from james Bond quantum of solace (2008)
The hot girls
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Both of them has been surrounding by too many beautiful, yet very smart and strong girls in all the francise.
The cute tech baby guy
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The cute, nerd, smart, sarcastic tech guy, with glasses, who apparently marry their job and computer
Familliar Face
Tumblr media
Do you realized that both MI and James Bond hired the same actress? Yep. Lea Sèadoux. But this time, she was in MI first in 2011 and then she's in James Bonds spectre (2015)
The similliar plot (kinda)
Tumblr media
In Mission Impossible Rogue Nation (2015) Benji, the tech guy and also Ethan's friend has been kidnapped by the bad guy and they put a bomb on his body. (Sorry for the bad quality, I screenshoot it from my phone)
Apparently.... The kidnapping things also almost happen in James Bond Spectre.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is the 1st version of the original script from spectre (2015) Q is suppose to get kidnapped by spectre in swiss, they tortured him, and Bond found him in the Spectre's prison barely alive.
And he had to killed a men and blow the entire building with Bond's exploding watch.
But unfortunately the script get leaked in 2014, and they changed the entire plot which is suck, because this version can be a very great arc for Q and Bond's relationship. And Q's character itself.
Don't get me wrong, I love both of thw francise very much. And in fact that MI came out before Craig's Bond. And I didn't mean to accuses MI of imitating Bond, because they both great in their own way, and maybe the similliarities is just an accident or perhaps they just got inspired by Bond and also Bond, who may have been inspired by MI
But in my opinion, I like James Bond more...
Because Bond gave me the crazy details, the feels about the espionage world that really exist, and all the iconic characters such as M, Vesper Lynd, Quartermastee, eve Moneypenny, and many more that I can't get from Mission Impossible.
And... Bond really connected to almost like 90% british spy themes series from BBC. For example Sherlock.
The way Mycroft used M's quotes and he clearly mentioned Bond's name in one of the episode (don't ask me which one. Just watch it!) Just so cool, if we didn't pay to much attention we wont notice it.
And I watched like some random espionage things BBC series like one year ago, and they also overshadowing James Bond and called him the shadow.
So for me James Bond is the winner in my heart, but minus in life. He died while Ethan still alive for right now 💀
So thank you for coming to my bored blog in the middle of the night ✨

"We're all trying, we all fail, we all are muqassiriin"
She came up to me and asked,
"How can i help you? today you walked around with a dark cloud above you, I was concerned, cuma binguung,"
"you know I'm here if you need to vent or discuss"
"kelihatan banget ya?" tanyaku "payah" lanjutku.
"remember this : اعملوا فكل ميسر لما خلق له 💗 tugas kita cuma berusaha" she tryn to convince me
"tapi usahaku cacat" keukeuh menyalahkan diri sendiri.
Then she replied,
"we're all trying, we all fail, we all are muqassiriin"
Im cried.
"maybe the problem is that you're acting like you're depending on your own efforts,
when in fact لا حول لنا ولا قوة إلا به
maybe you can try involving Allah, asking for his help, in all your efforts, your plans
because it seems like when you blame yourself for your taqasir, it seems like you think you were capable of doing it yourself
iya tindakannya di tangan kita, tapi kita manusia lemah banget, jadi bahkan dalam usaha sendiri aja mesti minta bantuan Allah
but that's okay, karena Allah suka ketika kita akuin kelemahan kita"
"But I'm soo far away from Him...How can i deserve His Help? How can i.."
"ask him for who He is, not for who we are"
I'm burst in tear. Then she continued,
"after all, surga dan neraka isinya sama2 pendosa, tapi yang satu isinya pendosa2 yg senantiasa kembali.
emphasis on senantiasa, mereka jg jatuh terus, tp mereka bangkit lagi terus"
"and really, we can only notice that the light is dim if it was brighter before".
"itu pertanda bahwa we were once in a better place, if we were there before, what makes you think we can't get there again?
no, I don't believe in myself, nor do I believe in you alone.
but yes, I do believe that we can do it with the help of Allah
selama jantung kita masih berdetak, Allah masih beri kita kesempatan, dan kita lah yg memutuskan mau bangkit apa ngga.
Jangan dengerin setan
Remember this aayah?
Tumblr media
لن تقنط من رحمة الله 💖
"no matter how far you went from Allah, it only takes one step to come back"
she tryn quoting, and send this pict
Tumblr media
"we can talk on the phone if you want, you can let me know if you need some time alone jg"
I chose a space, i need some time alone.
I thanked her, and prayed for her.. May Allah ease her affair
May Allah bless her and her family
She is one of a blessing that i received from Him
Last but not least..
"we're all trying, we all fail, we all are muqassiriin"
And that's okay, it made us human..

Graveyards by the sea
Tumblr media
Abandoned churches dotted along the Aberdeenshire coast give it a pleasingly godforsaken feel.
The regional council has put out a guide to 12 of the best such ruins.  Here is my short list, from south to north (map at the end of this post.)
The remains of St Mary's Church, in Cowie - pictured above and below - sit oddly between a golf course and cliffs overlooking Stonehaven Bay.
Tumblr media
The 13th-century chapel was dedicated to "St Mary of the Storms" but fell into disuse in the 1560s.   Perhaps the newly Protestant kirk objected to involving the Holy Virgin in maritime meteorology.  A panel at the site only says that the church "was unroofed by the ecclesiastical authority on account of certain scandals".
Locals recycled the crumbling walls as building material, despite a rumour that the stones would "rain blood upon any house built with them".
There was an attempt to rebuild the chapel in the 19th century.  The churchyard includes a memorial to a Stonehaven lifeboat crew who perished in a failed rescue in 1874.  Far from bringing succour to seamen, it seems, the site was jinxed.  Parishioners deserted it.
The adjacent golf clubhouse, on the other hand, is doing brisk business.
Twenty kilometres to the north is another former church in an incongruous setting.  The ruins of St Fittick's Church stand next to the south shore of Aberdeen harbour.
Tumblr media
The 12th-century chapel was named after an Irish monk who set out to evangelise the Picts in the 600s.  According to legend, Fittick's boat was caught in a storm.  He told the sailors that salvation lay in Christ.  They threw him overboard to placate Manannán mac Lir, the god of the sea.
But the holy man had the last laugh.  He managed to swim to the shore.  When the villagers asked him how he had survived the wrath of Manannán mac Lir, Fittick said: "Salvation lies in belief in Christ."
The church testifies to the complex relationship between Scots and their fellow Celts across the Irish Sea.

The kirkyard features the gravestone of one William Milne, a victim of Britain's civil wars of the 17th century (my post about the Scottish part of that conflict is here).
Milne, a farmer, joined a Protestant "Covenanter" militia during a royalist offensive backed by Irish Catholics.  The Latin epitaph says that he fell in 1645"for the cause of Christ... by the sword of a savage Irishman".
Fifty kilometres up the coast is Longside Old Parish Church, built in 1619-20.
Tumblr media
The churchyard features many memento mori symbols: skulls and bones, hourglasses and the like.
My favourite gravestone is that of William Reid, who "depairted this life" in 1702 and "rests in hops of blesed resurection".  I quote this not to mock the spelling, but my own obsession with spelling.
Soon I will be gone, as will the linguistic proprieties I held so dear.  For a pedant, this stone is the most poignant memento mori of all.

St Mary Chapel, Rattray, is another monument to transience.
Rising from flatlands that seem to merge into the sea, it is all that remains of the "royal burgh" of Rattray.
That status was granted by Mary Queen of Scots to encourage local clans to engage in commerce rather than feuds.  Thus Rattray gained the right to hold markets and trade far and wide.
The sea had other ideas.  Winds and currents filled the harbour with sand over the years.  By the 1800s the village had vanished, as if engulfed by the soggy ground.
Tumblr media
But the shell of the 13th-century chapel still stands, at the end of a single lane that seems to lead nowhere.
A few kilometres inland, on the outskirts of Fraserburgh, is St Ethernan's, Rathen.
A front gable and a side wall are all that's left of this 17th-century parish church.
Tumblr media
The stars of the kirkyard are John Greig and Anne Milne, a couple of tenant farmers who happened to be the great-great-grandparents of Norwegian composer Edvard Greig.
One of their sons emigrated and became a successful merchant in Bergen.
Three generations later, little Edvard learned how to play the piano and the rest is musical history.
Tumblr media
The inscription on the gravestone is quite worn but someone deciphered it: "Here lyes the remains of JOHN GRIEG, late tenant in Mostoun of Cairnbulg d 6 Jan 1774 in his 71st year. Here also was laid the body of ANN MILNE, spouse of above named John Greig d 17 Nov 1784 in 81st year. This stone is erected to his memory by his surviving children."
The survivors refrained from mentioning the couple's connection to an illustrious descendant. Another lesson in humility!
Fraserburgh is home to an informative Museum of Scottish Lighthouses.  Those uninterested in nautical beacons can happily skip that town and follow the coastline to the west.

The highlights of the northern Aberdeenshire seaboard are fishing villages that are little more than strip of cottages between water and cliff.
They look cute now but were born of desperation. Farm labourers settled these unpromising shores in the 18th century, after being evicted in the Highland Clearances.
Tumblr media
One of the most picturesque of those villages is Crovie (above). There is not even room for a road either in front or behind the cottages.
The most famous is Pennan, which was put on the map by Bill Forsyth's film Local Hero.
Tumblr media
Its phone box plays a big part in the movie - made in the dark, pre-mobile ages.
Forty years on, the red kiosk is still there.
Tumblr media
The Aberdeenshire council has apparently kept it in service as a tourist attraction.
Talking about maps, here's the one I promised (forgive its crudeness: the only cartographical tool my incompetence can handle is Google My Map.)

Quotes: Berprasangka Buruk
