agree so much with this review of babel like what i didn't realise about my indifference of the book was how all the characters had a much more modern mindset and vocabulary for a book that is set in the 19th century (not in a progressive modern way but more of a 2020s internet speak modern way) the characters just felt like puppets for what rf kuang wanted to say and whatever she wanted to say was very much influenced by how these dialogues would be dissected and shared online. I've said before that kuang is not subtle and that whole part about letty weaponizing her white womanhood after That twist etc etc felt so heavy handed i could tell she was envisioning all the reviews booktwt was going to write applauding her for that

thinking back on it i feel so bad for any of my middle school english teachers because i was 100% insufferable to have

#icarus speaks #i was SUCH an overachiever but only when it came to english #bc i Loved reading and writing #like. would get in trouble for reading in class levels of stuff #in 6th grade we had to read like. i think 100 pages? it wasn’t a lot #and log them + vocab words over winter break #i think. iirc. i read either 5k or 10k #and logged EVERY vocab word i found #then in seventh grade we had a month-long essay/research doc #where we had to pick a book. read it throughout the month. and then write about it #i finished the entire thing the Day after it was assigned #and THEN in 8th grade we had to write i think a minimum of 3k words #of a creative writing piece where you expanded upon an epilogue of the giver #i wrote. 10k words. #these r just my Biggest infringements but by god 😭 #very surprised none of my teachers snapped and just killed me #it would’ve been. extremely justified

i am so obsessed w the professor of mine who hasn’t graded the one (1) project we had in class. which i turned in in january. sir, it is literally finals week.

DREAMS OF THE RAVEN WAS PRETTYYYY GOOD!’ #i actually really enjoyed it! #mccoy gets fucked up not even in a sci fi way #just in a plain trauma and getting bonked on the head way #and he cant remember the last 25 years of his life #i honestly thought it was really interesting! #amnesia always plays out as a bit of a fanfic type ordeal but honestly if u just go with it its a really fun read #its funny to imagine 25 yr old mccoy. seems like that man was born divorced with one child 45 yes old cmo. he wasnt tho! and in this hes #actually real mad about being in starfleet! its interesting #and him and spock getting along is fun to read to because its such a shift from their usual dynamic. & u can tell spock is not having fun #about it lol #and poor kirk hates it all he keeps going to mccoy but he really has nothing to say! what do you do when your long time friend suddenly #forgets your whole friendship! #it was just a reallly solid story and i enjoyed the other characters too esp chekov and scotty #and as always i love the dynamic between chekov and spock and that was in here a lil too so that was fun #OVER ALL.
