I just find it really curious why you shipped White Knight (Jaune/Weiss) of all things. What’s the appeal, if I may ask?

Okay, strap in.

I've been meaning to compile my varied thoughts about Whiteknight through the years, so this is my opportunity to do so.

First is this r/RWBY post, where a good number of people also chipped in their thoughts, so it's a good look of the general thought process for liking the ship.

Next is this comment I left on a Phoenix/Night video years ago:

I've always had a soft spot for White Knight. At the time, I saw Jaune and Ruby more as siblings and Jaune and Pyrrha as platonic partners, so that left Weiss. After Pyrrha's death I considered Arkos more, but I actually think that Pyrrha's death made White Knight more interesting. I imagine Weiss' respect for Jaune would keep growing, and seeing Jaune grieving would make her more sympathetic to him and grow more concerned for him. I imagine that eventually she would indeed garner romantic feelings for him, but feels like she should hide her feelings - partly out of awkwardness due to the way she treated him last time, and partly out of thinking that Jaune only had eyes for Pyrrha and would not choose her.

It's my headcanon, sure, but I think it adds a nice depth to Jaune and Weiss' relationship, because the tables would literally be turned and where once Jaune pined for Weiss, now Weiss pines for the now heroic and capable Jaune. It's not abrupt either, it's very much a slow burn. It still makes Pyrrha relevant because her memory lingers over the both of them, and Jaune getting together with Weiss would symbolise positive growth for both of them, a nice reversal of their initial relationship, and a good point for Jaune to move on from Pyrrha's death through Weiss.

Weiss had always felt superior to others. Sure now she considers her teammates and friends as equals, but I don't think she ever truly considers herself the one on the back foot. Her feeling she could never replace Pyrrha in Jaune's heart and just be the "second choice" - a combination of pride, pain from Pyrrha's death and condemning herself for having such selfish thoughts leading to not allowing herself to confront her feelings - is very interesting to me and I think has loads of potential to dive deep into both of their selves and what they truly feel for each other, confirming what has been ambiguously floating in the air all this time.

When it comes to Whiteknight, it hangs on my perception of Weiss, which I have two different branching headcanons of: If Pyrrha Died (canon-aligned) and If Pyrrha Lives (canon-divergent).

In a version of RWBY where Pyrrha dies, Whiteknight is my top choice for a Weiss ship, because Pyrrha's death is sort of the secret ingredient to making this ship a goldmine of emotions and drama to explore. The shared commiseration between Weiss and Jaune over Pyrrha being gone; their shared admiration of her and subsequent feelings of loss and shared recovery.

There is also the contrast between their dynamics pre- and post-Pyrrha. The sense of immature puppy love that Weiss has no patience for eventually growing into a very real, mature love borne out of familiarity, friendship and mutual respect and reliance on each other's strengths.

In a RWBY where Pyrrha lives, Whiteknight loses most of its sweet narrative juice for me and I start considering other ships for Weiss, like Monochrome or Freezerburn. I would also likely default to Arkos for Jaune in this scenario, but only really because it's a safe choice I can still find interest in.

There is also the weird canon meta surrounding WK's development, pointed out by someone's comment in the above r/RWBY post. Basically the idea that WK felt really awkward and forced, so RT kind of swept it under the rug and forgot about it, only to (perhaps inadvertently) slowly give Jaune and Weiss moments together that felt oddly genuine and natural - a far cry from how their relationship initially began.

Whiteknight though will always have a special little place for me, because there's just... so much to like about it.

It has a slow burn. It has shared angst over character death. Romantic reversal, unrequited love, moments of epiphany about how much has changed between them and within themselves... It 's a fanfiction paradise.

And while yeah, the initial stages of their relationship are not great and pretty embarrassing to watch, the cringe parts somehow make the latter stages even more of a fun surprise to watch unfold. The fact that they can feasibly transition from friends to lovers with barely any effort now, when such a thing would be unthinkable back then... There is a charm to its matter-of-factness that can only be earned with time.

As someone who's watched RWBY in my late teens-early twenties and now watching it as an adult, Whiteknight feels like a ship that grew alongside its audience, and I think a lot of other WK shippers can attest to this.

The World: Arkos

Two versions: Darkness for one, light for the other. The light being to the top is Upright.

I have consistently written Pyrrha as being trapped being life and death.

Judgement: Ruby

One of the main principles of RWBY is that Ruby is the ultimate arbiter of right and wrong.

Decision making, redemption, renewal.

Poor logic, hasty judgement, self-doubt.

The Devil: Weiss

Seduced by the material world, *pulls out her dad's credit card*

Living in fear, domination, bondage. S4-5 for her was basically her in gilded cage of luxury.

Breaking from addictions, freedom from restraint, disowning her father.

The Tower: Ironwood

Danger, crisis, destruction, and liberation. He has a tower motif, but he forgets he lives in a world where a motley crew of teenage heroes can do more than an army. His greatest failures should have been his greatest successes, at least on paper.

Obstacles, volatile situations. He's given himself the job of getting rid of volatile situations, and as such given himself the job of marching straight into them.

The Hanged Man: Salem

Her entire fall to villainy was her finding more and more things to sacrifice to bring Ozma back.

This culminated in her attempted deicide, that resulted in the greatest change ever in Remnant's history.

The Magician: Ilia

Untapped potential.

Determined, Dextrous, Resourceful. Nearly wins against a couple of Huntsmen candidates that literally helped to save the world once already.

Communication blocks to the point she's probably autistic. Confusion and deceit were her modus operandi.

Her power was from her faith in the White Fang, without it she has nothing but doubt and lethargy. The ultimate in unrealized potential.

The Chariot: Yang

Moving forward, positive, drive. She forces herself to be if necessary.

Journey, ambition, confidence.

Lack of direction. Self-doubt.

Death: Blake

Major Changes

Transformation, change, letting go, release.

Fear of change, REPEATING NEGATIVE PATTERNS.

The Fool: Nora

Beginnings, Innocence, Leap of faith, Originality, Spontaneity

Chaos, Folly, Lack of direction, Naivety, Poor judgement, Stupidity

The Moon: Ren

Ren is Mulan, which is the ultimate in Yin. Which is feminine / covert.

He is constantly walking the precipice between darkness and terror. Literally with his Semblance.

The Sun: Oz

Enlightenment, joy, marriage, happiness in the moment, without being clouded by the past or future.

False impressions, lack of clarity.

The Star: Cinder

Upright is V1-3.

Reversed is V4+

The Emperor: Jacques

Of the father figures in the story, he is the most father figure.

The shadow of his darkness still haunts his children, even years after stepping out into the light.

The Empress: Willow

Just like Jacques is the most father figure of the father figures, Willow is the most mother figure. She is also the rightful heir to the emperor's glory.

The High Priestess: Qrow

It is both funny, and apropros.

He is the only one giving insight to the main characters.

But he is also holding back whatever he can in a misguided attempt to protect them.

Lack of personal harmony.

The Lovers: Sun and Neptune

Not in the literal sense.

Crossroads, commitment.

Both mistakenly fall in love, and suffer from it. And cause suffering in others from it.

Partnership Bromance

Disharmony, misalignment of values, imbalance.

The Hierophant: Raven

Education, Learning, Marriage, Religion, Seeking counsel or advice, Spiritual guidance, Tradition. Pretends to be these things, or to simply hide behind them.

Abuse of position, poor counsel, rejection of family values.

Justice: Winter

She is the sword of righteousness.

And often Lawful Stupid.

Temperance: Neo

Upright has her a prim and proper lady.

Reverse has her possessed by CC.

The Hermit: Arthur Watts

He is a socialite that pretends to not mind being banished.

He does everything he can to lash out for his exile.

Strength: Peter Port

He teeters between glorious and vainglorious.

His power is unmistakable, as he strangled a Beowulf when he was a toddler.

He is confidence and power, but if you talk to him, you realize he's not just bluster, and not just physical strength, but a powerful stoic. His strength goes all of the way down to his core.

That said, he is a hair's breadth away from losing control, and giving into his baser instincts. This is not contrary to his having strength down to his core, but if he was not so stoic, he would be completely unstable.

Wheel of Fortune: Roman

He spins the wheel, and has extraordinary good luck, and bad at the same time.

If Rwby gets picked up or bought… others and I have a few wishes…

In general

I want more developed relationships between characters. Within the teams, within the villains/antagonists, I just want them to be more between themselves or within each other. I feel that the villains are not that in sync as they should be, team RWBY are not as close as they are implied, and if they were the break ups (not particularly romantic, just generally) would hit even harder when they separate or breakdown. I feel the writers and even the fandom are just pretending that RWBY has well developed relationships when it doesn’t. I feel R/enora needs to individualize itself more than just leaving Nora as some joke/one dimensional character. B/umble bee needs more time for it’s platonic arc as well as its romantic and intimate arc, and I feel that it could take a few lessons from earlier Marvel when it comes to writing relationships. RNJR should had a longer arc and development to show how developed the relationships were between the team before or even after team RWBY reunited, maybe even before they separated, could have been more moments in the Beacon and Vital festival arcs, but I’ll get more into that in a moment. I wish there could have been more moments between Rose Lotus so I’m not just fishing for crumbs for my ship, because honestly they had a bunch of potential. Even Wildrose, Strawbana, platonic Rosebull, White Lotus, Ladybug, Freezerburn, White Rose, Black Lotus, Iceberg, Ironwitch, Greek Lotus, Arkos, Valkos, Frostbite, etc. could have been more developed, than just some of them abandoned or not even explored.

More development for characters, as much as I love the wide array of characters, they need to be explored. From Ilia, Velvet and Whitley, etc. they need to be explored. Even the villains/antagonists, temporary or not, need to be developed so they don’t turn out to be really generic and not fleshed out, I feel fleshing out a character makes them better written most of the time, take some notes from Marvel, they don’t need to be turn good, just give an understanding to how they got there or give them some attracting (not saying attractive) traits. Also don’t make a one dimensional villain out of a racial minority in your story, it’s not really giving a good message and may turn the character into a plot device rather than a character. Looking at Marvel’s Kree, there could have been some good or morally grey Kree, but now I feel they are just usually painted as villains.

I hate to say this but more content in the storyline, I feel we need longer episodes and an even longer Beacon arc, we need to get invested in the characters, world, and relationships, before we delve deep into the heart of the plot. I guess we could’ve had a bigger fandom and a well developed story if we made the Beacon Arc 75 eps at the very least, then the Vytal festival arc could have been a little bit more longer, at least 20-30 eps, observe which meant to be one off characters are liked and write them into the story. Maybe have an academy from Menagerie join the festival, they don’t have to be well liked we just need more Faunus characters especially since we don’t have enough of them on the main crew. Make each volume from that point at least 20 eps, and flesh out the story from there. Maybe make it longer to flesh out non-MCs.

But if we’re not doing a reboot, I say just follow my advice above, for future reference have a good peace arc so that the characters are not developing relationships under pressure, develop characters and make longer and more fleshed out seasons starting from volume 10

I’d love to see more AU projects, but I’d also like to watch them, main series, au, just rwby content in general, for free since I’m broke🥲

I want Nora to be independent and maybe have a couple of romances with other characters, maybe Mercury, I’ll write fanfiction for you guys definitely if that happens. Like I just want her to explore what she actually wants if she ever gets back together with Ren which is probably inevitable, I want her to develop as a person, I don’t want her to end up with him with a one sided obsession, look Ren is not equally obsessed with her, I just want her to act normal. I don’t hate her, I just think she has untapped potential to become a greater character, I don’t want her to stay as she is.

I want new writers to be involved with this series, I want them to commit to Monty’s plans for the story, yet change things that NEED to be changed in order to give a better message to the audience.

I want places related to specific characters to reflect on them just as Vale did for RWBY, like Oniyuri reflecting Ren and Nora. I want maybe some Chinese coded families besides Ren’s to live there, maybe some Chinese cultural appreciation molding some aspects in the show, maybe like houses or city decorations. Maybe have some more white and blues in Nora’s design, to represent Nora’s pure emotions for others and honesty she can sense just by understanding other people easily.

If you’re to rewrite R/enora’s relationship, have Ren less dismissive of Nora’s feelings, like show him caring, but you can also still have him not fully intimate with his emotions, like he’s trying not to be so close, to protect both of them

Those are just my main concerns for now, I’ll work on my own projects at my own time, but if there’s any projects I promised to show and forgot about please remind me, I have to many posts to scroll past to remind myself. While I don't know if it happens with the other media you listed alongside RWBY, the Jaune overuse is why I don't look up character tags here on Tumblr anymore aside from Amber (who I like, but hate lack of story of from RT), most of it is just shipping stuff, and to be fair, there are people keep it simple, and I'm not going to say Jaune should only be shipped with Pyrrha and vice-versa, but I wish I seeing more of that than stuff like "Jaune gets kisses from the all female cast members".

When people promote a male side character/deuteragonist over female main characters in fanfics, then people who proudly claim they never watch RWBY and only read Fanfics start claiming Jaune is somehow the main character?

And People start defending OC Fanfic Writer Couer, who cannot write a single novel without replacing every character in his works with RWBY Characters just to make money off of RWBY while hating on it?

Every "Jaune is the main character" shit I see involves typically being Anti-Bumbleby AND anti-Arkos.

Also heavily Anti-Team RWBY.

So WHY would I be interested in that?

Also for people wanting to ask "But what about Rosegarden?!"

How many fanfics or RWBYCritics do you know of that try to make Oscar, a POC boy, into the main character in their "re-write" or "fix-it" garbage of rwby? Nobody.

They just make it about Jaune, Adam, or Roman...and RWBY is about four women trying to save the world from a nigh-immortal magical being who lives on spite in its purest form while trying to manipulate the world into thinking that she is somehow a savior/goddess.

Take a look at R/RWBYCritics...all they care about is defending their ideal fantasy version of male characters while hating on every female character.
