Just Commit

A guy told me last night that he was going to for a half Ironman. When I asked him which race, he said he wasn’t sure, but when he is in better shape, he would find one and sign up.

Huge mistake, and at risk of offending him, he is being a huge pussy.

In his defense, this is thd bullshit that most people do in life - they do not make any commitments, disguising their fear as planning and preparing.

They don’t open that business until “get some things lined up”. They don’t start training hard until they lose a little weight or their joints don’t hurt as bad. They don’t sign up for that race until they are closer to race ready.

They have all these grandiose plans and “goals”, yet they never do a fucking damn thing. None of these bullshit plans ever take form. Those plans are nothing but an excuse to take action.

Think about it: I am planning to come visit. He government is planning to do anything. She is planning to join a gym. You might as well change “planning to” to “am/is looking for an excuse not to”

Goals without action are nothing but words and empty thoughts. And if you think you will look like a dumbass if you start something and it isn’t perfect, you look 1000 times ridiculous talking about it and never taking action.

An actual commitment brings a deadline, a “get off your ass and make shit happen” mark that forces you to take massive action. It creates a sense of urgency and forces you to act drastically. And drastic results call for drastic measures.

If you are miserable with your current situation, you must realize that you have to do the opposite of what you are doing now and execute. Back in December, I finally woke up to the fact that I was dying a horrible death and was massively depressed. Within a month, I had signed up for three races, one being a 50k (I hadn’t run any kind of race in over 20 years). Just weeks later, I was signed up for an Ironman triathlon. Now, I have at least one race every month for the next 6 months.

Those races keep me in check. They stop me from making excuses about how I need to relax and be a little bitch with my training and nutrition. Those races get my ass out of bed this morning to run, ride, swim, and lift. They make me go to bed at early so that I can recover and do it again instead of hanging out too late doing shit that I don’t need to be doing.

The power of a commitment is so much stronger than the power of “planning to”. Whatever it is that you are looking to change, find that one thing that forces you into getting off your ass and making it happen.
