I Have Some Feelings
To start let me just emphasize how much I love and adore this show and always will. This was my covid show. Both of my kids loved “Lucifer” and always said I should watch so at the start of covid I binged it and when I say binged, I mean all 4 seasons in a few days and have rewatched so many times I’ve lost count. I think it is timeless, engrossing, original and all around amazing. The writing and the cast were all excellent. The writing was smart and consistently strong and that is so rare. Funny, sad, poignant, it hit all the notes with very few plot holes or missteps. There is not one episode in the entire series that was not engaging. Even if I didn’t like an episode, it was still well done. What a rarity.
The cast is scary good. Completely underrated. Just all phenomenally talented. I don’t remember the last time a cast was this strong. From the core group to both reoccurring and guest stars, the cast was just fantastic.
Tom Ellis, no words. The man deserves to choose whatever he wants to do acting wise. He should have people breaking down his door. He can truly do it all and do it all well. He took a character that if portrayed by a lesser actor could have come off as a complete asshole and made him one of the most sympathetic and loveable characters in recent history. Ellis made a crime solving devil, a promiscuous man-child that occasionally breaks into song and the evidence room into a beloved character that has become an icon.
Lauren German, WOW. She is just so damn good. She can break your heart one second and have you laughing the next. She makes Chloe real, and people don’t realize how hard that is. Chloe is smart, kind, tough and gorgeous but she’s also an insecure dork. She’s us and German just brings it.
DB Woodside I’ve loved since “Buffy”. He is a phenomenal actor and who knew he could bring the laughs so well? His expressions were classic. Clueless angel indeed. Amenadiel could have been very one-dimensional but because of Woodside’s talent he became fully fleshed out and full bodied.
I have no doubt Lesley-Ann Brandt has a huge career in front of her. She took a character that very well could have been hated, a demon and made her into one of the most human characters on the show. Kudos to her for taking a tough role and making it her own.
Kevin Alejandro is another actor I’ve loved for a long time. He also took a character who if we’re going to be honest here did so many unlikeable things that he should have been truly despised but because of Kevin’s portrayal he was beloved. Great actor and a terrific director.
Rachael Harris IMO is the downlow MVP. She was literally the rock and again, with a lesser actress the role could have been a throwaway. The normal human, the sounding board but Harris imbued her with so much more. Her spit takes, sarcasm and her obvious compassion was what made Dr. Linda an unforgettable character. Once again just perfect casting.
Aimee Garcia was a great addition. She made Ella a fan fav and put so much heart, joy and sincerity into Ella never once did you doubt that she would prevail no matter what was thrown at her. Garcia was just fantastic, and I want her skin care regime.
Scarlett Estevez pulled off the one thing I thought almost impossible. She took the role of a young child and made it so I didn’t want to cringe. She portrayed Trixie so beautifully from day one that she was a true pleasure to watch. Even though Trixie was super precocious Estevez never made her obnoxious. I loved Trixie and I have never said that about any child character in an adult show. She was wonderful and has an amazing career in front of her.
That said, I’ve got some feelings now that I’ve seen the finale and have had some time to digest it all. I love that Chloe and Lucifer had eternity and I agree that they had to be separated for Chloe’s lifetime. Didn’t like it but it’s the logical path. She’s human, he’s not. The ageing thing alone necessitated them not being together long term on earth and that’s just to start the list. They had to had to be apart for the short term to get their eternity but the duality of Lucifer's ending and Amenadiel's didn't sit right. Amenadiel as God got to have it all. His calling, his family etc. while Lucifer had to give up everything. I also don’t buy the “If he came up from hell, he could never leave them again” defense. I call bullshit. Amenadiel managed, plus, missing out on the day to day is a huge sacrifice and by Lucifer missing out on the day-to-day Rory could still have had the hatred she needed to drive the story. Popping in for birthdays, graduations, weddings, etc., the big stuff does not a father make. Not being there for skinned knees, first heartbreaks, and all the little things a daughter needs her dad for can build up tons of resentment. Boom, absentee father, just like his dad was. That provides all the millennial angel angst you could ask for. I have a daughter; it doesn’t take much.
The Trixie issue was huge for me. Can Chloe see her in Heaven? Will she be able to travel to Heaven and visit Trixie, Penelope, Dan, her father? Chloe hesitated leaving Heaven in 5x16 because she couldn’t bear saying good-bye to her dad again. It seems as if Chloe sacrificed everything for Rory including Trixie. I want to preface this by saying. I liked Rory and loved the actress. I didn’t however like how it was as if she were their only child. When Lucifer spoke of family Trixie was not mentioned. Their family day, the same thing. She didn’t need to be there, I get that the explanation regarding Rory would have been way too much to get into but just a mention of her, how awesome it would have been to share this day with her would have worked. It seemed as if Lucifer went from, “I would do anything to protect that little Urchin” to “Trixie who”. Trixie was a character that we watched grow up and she meant something to us. I hate to say this, but the writers did Trixie and the viewers dirty in this regard.
This show was built around a few premises. Free will, honesty, redemption, sacrifice and family, both blood and made. The ending completely negated almost all of these. Chloe and their entire family were made into the one thing Lucifer abhorred the most which are liars. Their daughter was brought up surrounded by lies. What did they tell Trixie? The poor kid just lost her dad, and she was pissed at Lucifer when he went back to hell the first time. Did she grow up hating him because as far as she knew Lucifer left her mom again without saying good-bye and this time it was even worse because Chloe was pregnant. I get that the actress who plays Trixie had limited availability but seriously. A quick good-bye.
“Hey Urchin, you won’t understand why for a long time, but I have to leave. You know I never lie so I can’t explain why but know that I love you and your mom and one day I hope you can forgive me.”
A 30 second scene would have worked.
As all the characters learned throughout the series, omission of the truth is just a form of lying and there are always repercussions i.e., Chloe and Father Kinley, Dan shooting Lucifer, Maze finding out about Lilith and even Ella not being told. As far as free will, both Chloe and Lucifer had their free will taken from them in the end. By Rory forcing them to abide by her wishes, their free will was forfeited. It was a huge manipulation on Rory’s part and considering how much Lucifer hated manipulations it just didn’t sit right.
Parents making huge sacrifices I get. Chloe and Lucifer sacrificed everything for their child. Unfortunately for me this sacrifice, the way it was written seemed contrived to pull out maximum and IMO unjustified angst. I love angst. Hell, this is my favorite show. I thrive on the angst. But as I wrote earlier, all the anger, angst and hatred towards Lucifer could have been achieved without having Lucifer completely out of the picture. I have two kids and my husband, and I have made huge life altering sacrifices for them as many parents do but being there for the day-to-day little things was what made the difference in their lives and cemented the close relationships we have with them.
“Yeah, dad you were great. Showing up for the fun stuff, always swooping in for the big finish to play the hero then ditching us when things got tough. When Grandma was dying where were you? Nice that you showed up for the funeral but the six months leading up to it…we needed you and once again you weren’t there. When T got sick, when Jen broke my heart, blah, blah, blah…”
Even the whole Chloe dying scenario. They could have written it that rage Rory traveled minutes before Lucifer got there. Have him pop in right after Rory comes back. There were so many ways to achieve the end game they wanted other than the way they went. It seemed contrived and as if they took the easy way out to get where they needed to go. The Rory rage that was the catalyst for her traveling back in time and Lucifer finding his calling could still have been accomplished without the whole Lucifer disappearing storyline.
Now that I’ve finished my diatribe there’s a couple of additional things I would like to say. Lucifer is and always will be one of my favorite shows of all time. There are not enough words to describe the comfort and enjoyment this show has brought me. Thank you, thank you, thank you to the producers, cast and crew. You truly created something special.
To the fandom. Please do not let a polarizing conclusion rip apart the fandom. The only other fandom I was a part of tore itself apart so badly that the FBI got involved. Hence why I waited for 15 years to dip my toe in again. Everyone invested in this show has the right to their feelings. Debate is fine, baiting and bullying are not. The Lucifer fandom like the show is very special. Without the fandom we wouldn’t have gotten any conclusion so don’t let opposing viewpoints tarnish what has been a magical journey.

She’s All That (1999)
What makes a movie good isn’t merely convincing performances, a story that generates an emotional response, meeting the audience’s expectations, and proper filmmaking techniques. A good movie does those things, and more. If you're happy with "adequate", watch She’s All That. It’s a no-bells, no-whistles version of My Fair Lady minus all the personality.
Zackary “Zack” Siler (Freddie Prinze Jr.) is a shoo-in for prom king in six weeks. When his equally popular and attractive girlfriend Taylor Vaughan (Jodi Lyn O’Keefe), dumps him, Zack says he can find another future prom queen no problem. His friend Dean Sampson, Jr. (Paul Walker) challenges him to turn dorky, unpopular art student Laney Boggs (Rachael Leigh Cook) into a hottie.
Haven’t we seen this movie already? It feels like it. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. Most romantic comedies, fairy tales, etc. follow a general formula. What makes you prefer one over the other are the details, the little quirks that make the characters unique, memorable lines you quote to your friends, favorite moments, instances where the formula is turned on its head, or even the imperfections everyone acknowledges then moves past. She’s All That has none of those and isn’t self-aware enough to make this work in its favor.
It's the cinematic equivalent of a hotdog with ketchup… and nothing else on it. You can’t help compare this 1999 film to My Fair Lady. Its equivalent of Zack had personality. This guy? He’s amiable and bland. You won’t have any reservations about him and Laney getting together. Actually, there’s no reason for them not to. On their first date, he clearly shows genuine interest in her, so much that when the inevitable shocking reveal about the bet comes around, you expect her to listen to his apology and accept it no problem. Particularly after he befriends her brother, Simon (Kieran Culkin), and then defends him from school bullies. He turns against him too eventually, which is even less convincing.
As expected, Laney Boggs isn’t really a dork, and she isn’t unpopular for any convincing reason. She’s merely a pair of contacts and a new hairdo away from being a showstopper. If anything more drastic were required, there’s no way the film’s timeline of six weeks would work. I realize that’s the premise but once Laney’s glasses come off, they never come back on and it doesn’t feel like Zack’s done anything to get her to open up and make new friends either. Once done-over, she fits in perfectly with the upper-class high-school clique, which makes you question some of the "earth-shattering" truths she encounters on the road from ugly duckling to swan. So what if Zack’s ex is mean to her? Why does she take it out on him?
The picture is consistently short of what it could be. The leads are appealing enough, there are some occasionally funny moments, the premise has a certain timeless appeal. It’s just missing that something something. My favorite scene - a long dance sequence set at the prom - serves no purpose. Matthew Lillard’s character - as entertaining as he is - could've been removed entirely. You won’t be sorry if you sit down and watch She’s All That but you won’t remember it down the line either. Opinions on twisted songs 👁👄👁
Oof I don’t actually have the entire Twisted soundtrack so give me a sec here
Best:
Twisted- it’s JUST SO GOOD. I love the different components- the way the beginning and ending are absolutely meant to mirror No Good Deed from Wicked? The entire interlude with the other villains? I ONLY WISHED I ONLY WISHED I ONLY WISHED I ONLY WISHED I ONLY WISHED I ONL
No One Remembers Achmed- Joe Walker said Achmed was a low effort high return role, but genuinely... this song is so fun. “Let them laugh, that’s just fine- the last laugh will be mine cause they can’t laugh when they’re all dead” the last bit with the kick line with the refrain of “they’ll remember Achmed”?? Tigerfucker?? Peak Adult Disney Song tbh it holds both timeless musical theater style and intense Starkid humor
Everything and More- I want the moon!!! I want to live on the moon!!! And eat it in a pie!! And keep it as a pet!! And wear it like a gemstone in my hair!! Rachael Soglin is the only worthy successor to Lea Salonga and that’s that on that okay.
Worst:
Take Off Your Clothes- is it good? Yeah. Do I want to listen to it outside of watching the show? No
I Steal Everything- it’s just a little less melodic than One Step Ahead from Aladdin, which means it just doesn’t do it for me
Dream a Little Harder- I actually love this song agahdhdjw it’s just... kind of hard to hear some of it later on bc there’s so much going on. It gets a little hectic, which makes it hard to listen to sometimes because I get easily overwhelmed

Official Music Video For Re-Imagined "Feliz Navidad 50th Anniversary (FN50)" Releases Worldwide Today Through Anthem Records
The video was directed by Helen Murphy and Kash Tahen, and was initially released this month exclusively to Amazon Unlimited Members as part of a wider global Feliz Navidad 50th partnership with Amazon. Earlier today, the video made its public premiere on Good Morning America. The music video continues the 50th anniversary celebration of Feliciano's timeless holiday classic, "Feliz Navidad," the most famous, global bilingual song of all time. The video features over 30 A-list artists and celebrities from around the world, who remotely joined forces to honor José and create this very special celebratory visual.
The roster of performing artists featured in the "Feliz Navidad 50th Anniversary (FN50)" music video includes: José Feliciano, CNCO, Isabela Merced, Shaggy, Jon Secada, Jason Mraz, Lin-Manuel Miranda, Rachael Ray, Gloria Gaynor, Big & Rich, Michael Bolton, Los Temerarios, Emmanuel, Isabella Castillo, Jencarlos Canela, Pitingo, Patricia Manterola, Jesus Molina, La India, Julio Iglesias Jr., Tony Carreira, Bertin Osborne, Pablo Montero, El Dasa, Nikki Vianna, Adam Irigoyen, Gord Bamford, Leo Dan, Frankie J, Sam Moore, and Styx.
Marking the first ever music video for "Feliz Navidad" in its 50-year history, director Kash Tahen used groundbreaking special effects and animation to bring together all the elements of the "Feliz Navidad 50th Anniversary" celebration. Presenting its own set of challenges in the era of COVID-19, the making of the video involved a lengthy and detailed planning process, starting with each of the 30+ artists having to record their own audio and video from their respective home countries in their own studios. As the digital files were submitted, they were put through a meticulous analyzation process, and assembled by Helen Murphy and the Anthem Records team in consultation with FN50 music producer Rudy Perez, for inclusion in the video based on the vocals and parts of the song that each artist sang. In post-production, Tahen then created a virtual global studio using special effects meant to transport the viewers from one studio room to another. As an example, glass windows were used to create the illusion that artists like Shaggy and Jon Secada and Jason Mraz were recording in rooms next to each other. The visuals were designed to allow the viewer to be immersed in a virtual recording studio, watching world-renowned artists singing and recording together, in turn fostering the unity that underlies the meaning of "Feliz Navidad." The result is a groundbreaking, magical music video that has no traces of the time it was created in, and that sets a new standard for multi-artist global productions.

The quote "Women who wear black lead colourful lives" speaks to me; the colour black is such a strong part of my identity. It can sometimes represent rebel-ness, or be the perfect harmony. Black, as Coco Chanel once said, has it all. It is the perfect contradiction. It make us feel sophisticated, cultured and confident, it simultaneously gives a nod to style and the finger to being in fashion. Black is both a uniform and an individual statement. Fuss-free accessories are important in my minimal wardrobe, to accentuate the strong lines, the result is a refined look with a hint of attitude. Any season is perfect for investing in those dark timeless items.

One For The Road (Teton Gravity Research 2011)
SkiStar Movies Rating: 3.2/5 Stars
Sage Cattabriga-Alosa, Ian McIntosh, Todd Ligare, Griffin Post, Dylan Hood, Chris Benchetler, Daron Rahlves, Sven Kuenle, Erik Roner, Nick Martini, Dana Flahr, Dash Longe, Rory Bushfield, Callum Pettit, Rachael Burks, Shroder Baker, Byron Wells, Andreas Hatveit, Tom Wallisch, Mike Riddle, Grete Eliassen, Josh Dirksen
Written and Edited by Blake Campbell
Saddled with a “journey on the road of life” theme that sounds as if it was voiced by Sam Elliott’s “Stranger” character from The Big Lebowski, One For The Road never seems to get past first gear. Not only does the voice-over set the slow tone in the opening sequence as Todd Ligare’s truck breaks down, it keeps reappearing throughout the movie, kind of like an engine knock that won’t be silenced. Coen Brothers homage, perhaps? With the beautiful opening shots of the vast Wyoming plains accentuating the horizontal lines in the camera’s frame combined with the dialed-down, muted colors (another Coen Brothers trick – See “O Brother, Where Art Thou?”) you could be forgiven for thinking so. But even if TGR’s ambitions for OFTR were not so lofty, there’s no getting around the fact that the end result is still something akin to the slowdown at a border-crossing – you are moving but, jeez, it still feels like you’re going nowhere. While I have argued elsewhere that a ski movie’s framework should not get in the way of the film’s role in documenting the progress of the athletes, in the case of OFTR, these narrating elements sit like nasty speed bumps because there’s just no way around them.
The continuing insertion of the cowboy voice intoning timeless but trite platitudes about the meaning of life also has the effect of locating the action in someplace else besides the here and now. That’s disorienting because any regular viewer of ski movies is going to be emotionally invested in the skiers they know and follow. So when there’s an accident and Ian McIntosh falls off an Alaskan mountainside and completely snaps his femur, that disaster is going to have a little more impact for those viewers than is afforded by the cowboy narrator’s line that prefaces the scene: “You have to take the good with the bad because as they say when you’re on the top you have the longest way to fall.” Yes, there may be a life lesson to be gleaned here in a forest for the trees type of view point but there’s a whole lot more drama, adventure and “triumph over adversity” material that could have been mined (the details of how they got him off the mountain could have provided some riveting footage).
Add to this some other non-sequiturs like Erik Roner’s James Bond tribute (it’s not even a full segment) and you get an even more frustrating traffic jam of a movie, especially since the Bond stuff has been done over and over (and over and over) elsewhere including in ski movies (see McConkey’s Bond piece in Seven Sunny Days).
If the road had been cleared of this debris, OFTR would have been a smoother ride. Todd Jones and Blake Campbell know how to coax the best shots out of all the variables: the locations, the weather, the athletes, the helicopters and the dollies. Their cameras sneak up on the skiers as their descents commence and they follow the action to the end of the run, delivering all the thrills expected from a TGR movie. Last year’s 3D segment in Light The Wick was a cool add-on at the end of the film. This year’s ace-up-the-sleeve of the TGR crew is the Phantom camera which shoots at 1000 fps. Edit these shots in slow motion and they remain crystal clear. Sprinkle them throughout the movie and the result is a 3D-like effect that makes for sweet eye candy.
This is the first TGR movie in a long time that has not had Seth Morrison featured. While he’s missed, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa and Ian McIntosh more than make up for his absence. Their damn-the-torpedoes skiing is as aggressive as ever. The real surprise, however, is Todd Ligare. In his previous two outings with TGR he got some good screentime but not a whole lot of it. In OFTR he’s been given an elevated profile when delivering brilliant sequences shot in Jackson Hole, Pemberton and finally Alaska. He’s exactly the all-out backcountry and big mountain skier that TGR is known for and it looks as if he’s going to have a strong place on this team. TGR regulars Dash Longe and Dylan Hood crush it too, as per usual.
This is not a ski movie that will bear repeated viewings but for the one time you do watch it the skiing will impress. By Mark “The Attorney General” Quail

JEWELLERY BLOGGERS' Most Current TOP 7 JEWELLERY TRENDS FOR 2017
Jewellery can be a fabulous medium in which to work. We get to meet many creative and daring clients, talented goldsmiths and of course the worldwide influencers that ensure the latest jewellery styles continue being front-of-mind.
We're very thrilled, therefore, to show seven of the Top Jewellery Trends to get 20 17 by the perspective of leading jewellery writers, inspired by the most current runway and emerging design topics in the world of jewellery design.
1 Colour Riot
Rachael Taylor, jewellery writer and writer for The Jewellery Editor tells AENEA: "After a long desire for delicate, minimal diamond-set jewellery, we're getting to find a return on colour and scale this past year. Bright tooth and big colored diamonds will light up cocktail rings and statement earrings."
We have seen natural bead pieces to the Givenchy run way, and Christopher Kane decorate Crocs with chunks of glittering quartz. Enamel, meanwhile, evokes a sense of ancient jewels with echoes of Italian and Indian design aesthetics.
Katerina Perez high-lights 'large rough stones' as vibration up jewellery design, likening the riot of colour in jewellery to the lively use of glowing tones we're witnessing in cosmetics. "Stone cutters make an effort to style stones so that their virtues are made prominent, and their faults disguised. But at the long run stones might be removed from their uniqueness becoming just another ruby, sapphire or emerald," she informs AENEA.
"Therefore, if you love gems as these were created with nature, then it's time to get them out of this box and put them on. Wearing bits with announcement stones especially in their own demanding form will soon be in my own opinion a sexy trend of 20 17."
Two Hoop-Hoop Hooray
Big, small, lanky or fearless, hoop ear rings would be the style to watch -- and wear -- in 2017. On the runways of Marni, and Loewe, flat perspex fashions and daring single decoration showed how divergent the hoop trend could become. With bold, rigid chain layouts, Ralph Lauren is your hottest major label so as to put in hoops to the jewellery sets.
"It was the models at Altuzarra that stole the show with all spirals in crimson, yellow and baby blue adoring their ears," notes jewellery influencer Beanie Major, while reviewing the most modern runways on her site Indtl.com.
Marion Fasel, the founder and director of online jewellery magazine The Adventurine, links our hankering for hoops to the comeback of a certain fashion era. "Seventies silhouettes are creating a come back in jewellery, making hoops in every shape and size look fresh again," she informs AENEA.
There's little uncertainty 2016 was the season of this choker. From black rope fashions to lace ribbons, pearl embellished diamond and chains sockets, the choker made its own mark. However 2017 will see that the choker resisted with the fearless power of stainless-steel cage and collars -- wraps of metal, chains or even fabrics which encircle the neck and also make the wearer stand tall.
"The skate trend was gaining momentum in the past half a year, culminating in certain genuinely exceptional high jewellery debuted by the French maisons during Paris Couture Week," wrote jewellery writer Claire Roberts, whilst the 20 17 jewellery styles began to show themselves.
"A first outing on the runways in March, the oversized mono-earring was shoulder-skimming in 2013, with one thread of golden or even a swatch of cloth which makes the most impact," notes Anne-Sophie Mallard of vogue.fr.
Draping Brands or blended cloth layouts that cascade down to the shoulders will be worn independently or matched with a bigger drop or climber. Asymmetry and also Mismatching ear ring will try to generate drama and intrigue; styles will soon be lively but also powerful.
"mis-matched earrings are poised to over take in 20 17 following the AW16 fashion shows at which Alexander Wang and Sonia Rykiel revealed them in a fresh light, thereby igniting the general public attention again," Perez explains.
5 Rose-tinted Gems
These softer, natural hues follow the proliferation of Pantone's blush-pink 'rose quartz' colour in 20-16, that has steadily squeezed into fine jewellery design, recorded by stones like pink opal, morganite, and also the above mentioned sapphires and rose quartz. These gentler colors, despite and even because of the current global climate, will continue to elicit femininity and womanhood in jewelry layout. A relaxing touch amid boisterous, bold and often sculptural shapes.
"Once more, the colour pink is called to accomplish nicely in 2017, not just with fashion pieces but together with watches and jewellery too," Stefanie Mändlein, manager of German jewellery show Inhorgenta. "The pink fashion matches the assumed trend metal of 20 17 -- yellow gold -- and gold will also be complemented by pink."
L-R: AENEA's Candy Collection set with natural-hue diamonds; AENEA's emerald and diamond Quadrifoglio set; Amy Adams at the SAG Awards
Though the fad for asymmetry, more chains and mis-matched styles may be tremendous in fashion, the area of nice and high jewellery appears to be keeping one foot firmly in convention, because of the allure of Hollywood.
With awards season upon us, the red rugs are teeming with dazzling jewelry made to turn heads. Therefore, will 2017 re-invigorate the classics?
"The most unexpected trend from the red carpet up to now this year is matching collections," says Marion Fasel. "Emma Stone wore earrings and a necklace that matched into a significant scene of La-la-land. They say that you need three sightings to be a fashion, so I'm following this closely."
AENEA enjoys pearls, especially presenting them in fresh and surprising ways -- clashed with colored diamonds and lassoed around the throat, or flowing out of the ear including droplets of water.
Following jewellery's many interpretations of the timeless round pearl, 2017 marks the season of this baroque; a opportunity to celebrate undulating, organic and curvaceous pearls in all of their glory.
Barbara Palumbo, the writer and jewellery enthusiast behind Adornmentality, shares her recognition: "I am watching baroque pearls used in a contemporary, fashion-forward way this year, including in minimalist bracelets along with gold and silver along with ear markers emphasized with diamonds." "I have even seen them in necklaces designed for males, that helps to place a modern twist on what exactly is recognised as a classic, natural gemstone."

Tuesday night was a classic: vintage music in a vintage venue.
In many ways, LA’s historic Theater at the Ace Hotel was the perfect place to host Lake Street Dive, a band that celebrates the past.
Rolling Stone called them “One of the Best New Bands to Watch” in 2014 and described their music as “Motown meets the Brill Building in jazzy, soulful, woulda-been Sixties chart toppers.”
The quartet of drummer Michael Calabrese, bassist Bridget Kearney, singer Rachael Price, and guitarist/trumpeter Michael “McDuck” Olson met in 2004 as students at Boston’s New England Conservatory of Music. Though they were all studying jazz, their music reflected a mutual love of classic pop, particularly from the ‘60s, when pop could mean the Beatles, the Supremes, Dusty Springfield, or the Beach Boys.
“We are all students of that music: the Beatles, Paul Simon, David Bowie,” says lead vocalist Price. “And we met at jazz school, so we all grew up in an atmosphere that encouraged harmonic adventurousness.”
The result is a timeless mix of catchy melodies, danceable beats delivered by a tight band with a powerhouse front woman. In other words; classic pop heaven.
Lake Street Dive first gained YouTube notoriety with clever covers of top 40 hits like the Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back,” and George Michael’s “Faith.” But the majority of Tuesday night’s set list was filled with originals, primarily from last year’s “Side Pony” release which shows the band’s musical sophistication combined with an easy-going groove.
It would be easy for a band of uber-talented music geeks to impress with their virtuosity, but a Lake Street Dive show is anything but pretentious.
“We used to be stiffer, more analytical conservatory kids,” said upright bassist Bridget Kearney. Now we like to use our conservatory skills for good, not evil.”

Beyond Fashion And Makeup – Meet Five Bloggers With An Important Message
The most successful bloggers have the power to influence their followers to buy a new lipstick or Instagram-friendly coffee: but what if that same logic could be applied to different issues? It’s an important time in society, and influencers who are using their platforms wisely can change opinion and help make lasting change for the better.
It could be something as simple as discussing a health issue and how it affects everyday living or creating more in-depth think-pieces about intersectional feminism, politics or body positivity. Sharing your own stories will help to reassure your audience if they’re going through the same thing as you – or may make them aware of a realm of experience that’s different to their own.
If you don’t feel comfortable attempting this, then you can start off gradually.
Beyond Fashion And Makeup
Find your voice and register your interest in a topic that’s personal to you, through retweets or by carrying out and posting interviews to gain more knowledge on the subject. Progress happens incrementally, and the more influencers who start discussing challenging topics, the less daunting it will seem to join the conversation. With this in mind, here are five inspirational bloggers who stand up for what they believe in and raise awareness of important issues.
1. Callie Thorpe
With many High Street stores still failing to cater to sizes bigger than a 16, Callie’s voice is an important one that educates and encourages us to be kinder. She’s honest about her own experiences as a plus-size bride (her wedding pictures went viral in 2016) and her blog emphasizes that you don’t have to change your body to fit in with mainstream beauty standards – you’re fine as you are.
This year, Callie has worked with Nike, Molton Brown and Spotify, plus she consults for fashion brands behind the scenes.
2. Girl Vs Cancer
Lauren Mahon is a social-media whizz who was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 31. After the initial shock, she decided to channel her energy into raising awareness within a demographic that often feels invincible. She started selling charity T-shirts via Girl vs Cancer, featuring humorous slogans and cheeky illustrations. Earlier this year, she launched a successful BBC podcast alongside Rachael Bland and Deborah James that helps to demystify the disease.
With her honest captions and Instagram Stories, she’s opening a dialogue and encouraging a generation to be more breast-aware.
3. On A Curve
Valerie Eguavoen launched the @YouBelongNow Instagram feed after noticing that a prominent fashion brand failed to include any darker-skinned or plus-size women on an influencer trip. She voiced her opinions on her own blog and launched a separate platform, On A Curve to highlight the diversity and stand up for those who are overlooked because of their race, ethnicity, religion, gender, age or size.
She’s since been featured by Forbes, Refinery 29 and Vogue and hopes to empower other content creators to make their voices heard.
4. A Considered Life
Ever wondered where to start when it comes to living a plastic-free life or introducing more vegan dishes into your diet? Step forward Sophie, from A Considered Life. She’s been blogging on subjects such as these for over five years, and her message is to encourage others to be happier with less.
It can often seem overwhelming to completely change our habits, so Sophie shares practical ways to make gradual changes. The tone of her blog is non-judgemental and she admits that she’s still figuring things out when it comes to finding zero-waste bathroom products, for example. Recent posts highlight sustainable fashion brands and hard-to-find items, such as 100% biodegradable cotton buds.
5. Mama Cāx
Meet the Haitian-American blogger who’s happy to stand out and switch the design of her prosthetic leg to match different outfits. Mama Cāx’s story is a unique one, as she was diagnosed with bone and lung cancer at the age of 14, given three weeks to live and had her right leg amputated. As she’s grown in confidence, she now uses social media to “dismantle the image of what people with disabilities should look like” and shares her travels around the world.
Not only has she modeled for the likes of ASOS, River Island and on the runway at New York Fashion Week, but she also has a master’s degree in International Relations and works as a motivational speaker. She makes sure to educate brands if their premises aren’t accessible, and includes image descriptions in her captions for the visually impaired.

I am grateful for many things in my life, I always search for new ways to be a pleasure in the sight of God, I choose to believe the best in everyone and I have faith that “it’ll all work out” because my faith is in God through my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
I am watching history unfold and am humbled that Andre Soriano of Andre Soriano Fashion chose me to be a part of it.
I have traveled many roads and cut many paths some unorthodox, most conventional, always with God as my compass. Be mindful of the seeds you sow for they will bear the fruits of your future that will live on as your legacy for generations to come.
Will you choose to follow the roads of others or will you cut your own path? This is the question I will leave you with.
All glory to God!!!… I can’t say thank you enough to each of you.. Thank you Andre Soriano for the great honor of choosing me to represent the #MakeAmericaGreatAgain Gown, an Andre Soriano Fashion Couture original, I am truly humbled with great respect. Would audience members be more or less engaged in ballets if the elements of words, spoken or sung, were still incorporated into performances?
The article discusses that Louis XIV stopped performing because he became “too porky” to be attractive. How has this idea of body image and appearance from this time period affected the generations of dancers after it?
While reading this article and considering how little the world of ballet has evolved from its origin, I was thinking about a dance company I saw this past weekend called Collage Dance Collective. This company is very progressive for the ballet world because it is composed of all dancers of color. Watching their forty five minute showcase, the dancers performed three short ballets. Illustrating a wonderful storyline this concept that the articles discusses of athleticism and aesthetics is clearly seen. Seeing dancers being pushed to their limits and still carrying the elegance was refreshing.
So I know that there are different periods/ styles of ballet but something that is interesting I have thought about after reading this article is that over the course of the centuries there has been little deviation from its form. Ballet is such a strict discipline that despite there being slight stylizations such as the romantic periods which this article touches on I find it interesting that ballet has not evolved like genres such as modern and jazz. What qualities make ballet so timeless that the origins and exercises have stayed so prominent over the years? It also makes me wonder that when ballet was first forming if the people of money aka King Louis XIV would ballet have made it this far? The article talks about how much the funding it takes to produce and create a ballet and if the lower poverty people were the ones to create ballet I do not think that ballet would be still as prevalent as it is today.
