hello this is an infodump about my probably-never-going-to-be-finished fic for the magic college au (it is Very Long)

basically like halfway through may i started this fic where (if you didnt read the tumblr post which is fine im about to tell you all about it anyways) I took all the lodgers, gave them super powers and stuck them into college (originally it was high school but that felt weird since they're supposed to be adults)

Here's me explaining all the powers and why I chose them now because I Can

Henry and Edward have the same power bc theyre still one physical being, Henry most reflects the "original", but pretty much when he was a little kid he accidentally used his power on himself and split his personality/being into two, creating Henry Jekyll (The "good") and Edward Hyde (The "bad"). Edward likes to hold it over him that as much as he likes to pretend he *isnt* the original and is just as much of a fragment as he is. Henry avoids using his powers now, but his friends and family kepts "casually" nudging him to try a school for exploring your powers, so now he's in one. His power is a lot more than what he did to himself, it just allows him to manipulate emotions, thoughts and memories. It was called "Disconnect" because the only way he knows how to use it is to shut off said things (for example, if someone is having a panic attack he could just turn their emotions off. he wont though, because he has no clue how to reverse it)

Ito is like, one of the most important characters just because of her power. Her power is like the opposite (kinda). It's called 'Connect', and it allows her to connect two or more people together through various means. Senses, thoughts, emotions, memories, etc. She hasn't unlocked much of its capabilities because she doesn't know how to control it, and one of the few times she's used it it was on her brother and he still holds a grudge on her for it. She accidentally Connects their entire dorm floor on the first day there. After those three the rest of the abilities are kinda basic and not super relevant to the plot i already came up with, but im sure theyll find a use at some point George Bird, who prefers to be called Bird, has chlorokinesis (which means he can manipulate plants) because in the comic his expertise is Crypto-horticulture which is just like-- magic plants basically. So now he has a magic that deals with plants Christopher Archer, who prefers to be called Archer, has telekinesis. He often uses it to help himself while messing around with inventions or repairs (his family wasn’t exactly well off, so he was often the one repairing broken things. good thing he has a knack for it), he’s just in the college to learn something more and get away from home James Maijabi can communicate with spirits, it’s driven him a little bonkers but at least most ghosts fade after a period of time and stop bugging him. He doesn’t use the ability to do much, but he has successfully solved a murder once. He’s in the college to learn to banish the ghosts, and to maybe use them to his advantage. Ranjit Helsby can breathe underwater as his expertise in the comic is Bathynautical Exploration, which if i remember right means he just explores the oceans. I thought it was fitting. He’s at the college to practice his power in a safe, controlled environment and see if there’s any hidden aspects to it. Lily Lavender can teleport, she doesn’t have much control on it as it only manifested in full a little under half a year ago. She often teleports around uncontrollably when excited, and it has turned into more than a few accidents. She just wants to learn to control it. Eleanora Cantiloupe can levitate herself and other objects, she wants to learn to life heavier objects and bring herself higher off the ground without risking falling off a building or crushing herself with a bowling ball. Jackson Griffin can turn himself and other living creatures invisible, which he discovered around age 8 when he turned his cat invisible and thought it died/ran away. The invisibility wore off after Griffin thought he was going insane feeling a cat-like weight on him while he was sleeping or hearing ghost purrs. Walter Pennybrigg’s ability is called ‘Lifelike’ and he can bring inanimate objects to life, he wants to learn how to make the time limit of half an hour longer. Anthony Sinnett can control fire, he wants to learn how to stop sparking when angry or excited and not catch random things on fire without noticing. Martin Mosley can block light in such a way that seems as though they’re manipulating shadows, they want to see if there’s any way to make this useful. Baxter Tweedy can turn himself into a being of electricity and go from various electronic and manipulate them from inside. He wants to make sure he never gets stuck inside any electronic and maybe learn to manipulate things from the outside. Robert Lanyon can manipulate water, he just wants to stop accidentally splashing people when he gets pissed off. Jonathan Luckett’s ability is called ‘Combustion’ and it does exactly what it sounds like it does; make things explode. He just wants to be able to explode things without burning a hosue down. Rachel Pidgely can heal living beings, she wants to learn to heal bigger wounds after her brother died and she couldn’t help him. Charles Tanis can bring things back from the dead (temporarily, after half an hour they become zombie-like and after another fifteen minutes they drop dead, unable to be ressurected again), he wants to make his time limit longer and possibly re-ressurect previously ressurected beings. Jasper Kaylock, his ability is called ‘Werewolf’, he can shapechange between a fully human form, fully wolf form and anthro wolf form, he has heightened senses and is naturally much stronger and faster. He wants to be able to control his shapechanging, because currently he’s human during the day, anthro wolf at night and full wolf on full moons. Victoria Frankenstein, ‘Sentience’, gives sentience to a being capable of containing it, and it is currently permanent with the exclusion of death. She wants to make the sentience non-permanent or learn to control those she gives it to. Creature, a product of Frankenstein’s attempts to create a new species, she has yet to kill him so he simply follows her around After arriving at the school Rachel and Jasper start gathering their dorm-hall mates (as everybody on this list all lives on the same floor/hall but in seperate rooms) for a shopping trip. sometime on this trip Ito accidentally Connects the entire party together, but it doesnt really hit until they all get back. There’s about fifteen minutes of everybody panicking, which created an obnoxious feedback loop of panic. Ito, familiar with her own ability (kinda), Henry, familiar with sharing a mind with another, and Rachel, naturally good at handling hers and others emotions, all manage to detangle themselves from the mess and start calming people down. They all make their way out into the common room where Ito admits that she really didn’t mean to do this, and she has no idea how to fix it. They have to figure out living with their minds all mangled up for at least a couple weeks now. In this time, they discover a few secrets about each other. Frankensteins dead girlfriend, Jekyll’s secret ability and even more secret other half, jasper’s werewolf downsides, rachel’s dead brother, the list goes on. annd that’s all ive got anygays enjoy your day

“I dunno, there’s something about adult twins that I find a little immature,” Lance says, completely unprompted. “You’re grown now, y’know? Pick one of you to die. There’s no need for two of you.”

Everyone blinks at him, except for Hunk, who is used to this kind of thing and just sighs and goes back to his blueprints. Keith can’t quite let it go so easily.

“…Lance, you are a twin.”

“Yeah, and once I get back to Earth, Rachel and I are gonna duel to the death.”

“Don’t you think that’s a little… imbalanced?” Pidge asks, eyeing Lance’s bayard. “I mean, one of you is a little more dangerous than the other, I’d think.”

“I dunno. I think I might actually have a chance with all the paladin training! I don’t actually think I’m going to win, or anything, but at least I’ll die with honour.”

Pidge turns to Hunk, who hasn’t even looked up. “…I can’t tell if he’s kidding.”

“I wish he was.”

that post about hcing male characters as trans is so wild bc the same is literally true of female characters. hc them as nb/transmasc and not everyone'll agree obviously but no one really cares. hc them as transfem and people get so weird. "oh why do they have to be trans?"

“You texting a girl?”

He scrunches his nose, sparing Rachel a glance. “Nah, I’m talking with Keith.”

“Who’s Keith?” she asks with a frown. She shoves some popcorn in her mouth and taps her fingers on her book.

“Just a classmate I have to do the English project with.” He steals a handful of popcorn from the bowl and hums at the buttery taste.

“But you were bitching about the project when—wait! Keith as in Mullet Guy you’re totally not into?”

The birds singing in the garden flee from Lance’s screech. “No! I am not into Keith! What the fuck, Rachel!”

He flaps his hands wordlessly. “We were at each other’s throats until, like, two weeks ago!”

“There’s nothing more homoerotic than a rivalry,” Rachel points out. Her eyes glitter with some sort of knowledge that must come with being a bastard. Lance has seen that look on Pidge’s eyes before. “Plus, you were quite absorbed by your phone there. Didn’t even hear me when I got home.”

“Whatever,” huffs Lance.

Coran, Allura and Hunk were completely in the dark about this

I think Keith’s crush developed after he saved Lance from Sendeck

“I cradled you in my arms!” Getting a little defensive there, huh, Keith? ;)

Lance’s crush developed when they got back to Earth

They got together after the war was officially over and after Shiro’s wedding

Pidge was 100% plotting to get Lance and Keith together

The whole plan went to flames when Keith left the team (Pidge sobbed for a week since she didn’t have a plan for that outcome. She had all of the letters planned so she went to numbers)

Then when Keith came back, she was happy since her plan could go into motion 😇

Then Lance asked Allura out on a date which I think is part of the reason why Pidge didn’t wanna go help Allura in the first place

Everyone on the team kinda felt like Allura was using Lance as a rebound because of how quickly they got together and after the whole Lotor situation

After the whole Allura sacrificing herself situation Lance was real depressed

He wouldn’t leave the house ever

Keith had to drag him out of the house and this led them for spend a lot of time together

Lance slowly got better and Keith didn’t come around as much

Lance started to miss his company

Their first “Official” date was Shiro’s wedding when Lance asked Keith to be his date

Both were panicking while Pidge was laughing her ass off

The whole team was very supportive of them

Double dates with Shiro and his husband 🙌

Actually, it gets a bit awkward once he talks about them using protection

The definition of ‘Flirty’ x ‘Aggressive but likes it’

Their history is messy like Ross and Rachel’s or Robin and Barney’s or just the plots of both shows

This is for my Klance people:

AU idea for when Allura becomes a Paladin. Lance has been dealing with his insecurities and spot on the team for a while before Allura became a Paladin and Lance always thought of taking a break from Voltron but never did until Allura. One night he tells the others that he's been having thoughts of just taking a break (Keith is not present). Pidge and Hunk try and get Lance to stay but Shiro interrupts saying that everyone has their own moments of rest and for Lance it's now until he's ready to come back in which the others will be waiting for him.

Lance leaves early the next morning, as everyone has already said their goodbyes (ne Keith because no one informed him). So at first Keith thinks Lance is just in his room in a depressive episode and goes to cheer him up only to find Lance nowhere in the Castle of Lions. It's then that Shiro realizes what happened and informs Keith, which ticks Keith off more that Lance told everyone but him.

Now here are two ways I can see it diverge:

1) with a small space pod from the Castle, Lance makes it back to Earth and (after the extreme quarantine) goes back to his piloting classes and even beats James and ends up becoming a protégé to Adam for MFE's. The two talk, and Adam helps Lance deal with being on Earth while the ones he cares about are in space. Then the Galra invade and Sendak remembers Lance from his time as Paladin and kidnaps him as bait for the others (Sendak also kidnaps Adam, Veronica, Rachel, Lisa, Marco, Luis, Nadia and Sylvio to bait Lance); so when the others find out the Earth has been invaded it stresses them out even more. When they get to base Sanda informs them that Lance's family that was captured along with Adam are considered dead. When inquired about it, Sanda shows them a video they received earlier that day of Lance being alive but any videos about Adam and Lance's family have stopped coming as quick as Lance got captured, which has been months with Colleen and Sam trying to think of ways to save them.

The Paladins still get on the ship with being captured themselves and Sanda still betraying them. Eventually they get free and who's shooting at them? Lance. Clearly, they think, he's under some mind control. Until he calls Keith mullet. Lance informs them that he has to do this. He has to fight his friends. Which Hunk, Allura, and Pidge are not happy about and are ready to fight. Even Shiro can't believe what he hears. Then they hear young children crying. The voices calling out to Lance that they're scared. Lance says he's got them. That he'll protect them until the end.

That's when it dawns on them that Lance is working with/for Sendak for his family (in which Sendak is hospitable - as he can be - to Lance's family so Lance doesn't turn on him and angering the other Paladins more). Sendak calls Lance back to him. Lance leaves a key for the other Paladins to get his family and Adam out. Once they're off the ship, Lance starts fighting Sendak and when Keith goes back to Lance because they can't leave him behind, the ship explodes. Lance didn't die though, his Paladin armor got some upgrades that's to Sam and survived the explosion.

Once they're all down on the ground the group celebrates.

Bonus: once the celebration of the Galra being gone and they survived Adam and Keith call out to Shiro and Lance respectfully in which Shiro and Lance look at each other due to the furry in Adam and Keith's eyes. Those two run, because Adam definitely was the one to teach Keith how to fight and Shiro never won in hand-to-hand combat with Adam. Ever. Or even verbal combat. Keith confronts Lance on leaving and not telling him. Keith doesn't have an issue with the fact he told everyone, he just wants to know why he was excluded. Lance admitted that his feelings for Keith at the time were being weird and he didn't know what was going on and he did want to tell Keith but with his confusing feelings he wasn't sure if telling Keith was the best idea. Lance then confesses that aside from their rivalry also being a friendship he was starting to see Keith in a romantic way and he wasn't sure if they were genuine or if it was because they were in space and Allura was the only girl - Lance considers Pidge a sibling so gross - so he needed time to clear his head. Keith inquires about Lance's current feelings for him, Lance admits that he does have romantic feelings for Keith still but he's going to start talking to someone so he can move on, leaving Keith confused so Lance informs him that he's sure that Keith, that he's sure Keith has no feelings for him whatsoever in which Keith tells Lance to shut up because yeah, Keith does love him and any minute that Lance wasn't there was torture and not knowing where or how he was was even worse and knowing Earht got invaded then Lance got captured to the brief moment that Keith thought Lance actually turned on them was worse than any hell could conjure up to torture him with.

Added bonus: Matt makes a comment about what Keith did in s4 ep 7 and Sam remarks when Adam was in his plane and nearly died and father and son remark how Adam and Keith did not seem to have a care in the moments leading up to their potential deaths so Shiro and Lance then and go scold their boyfriends for being idiots.

2) Lance still helps out in space but not in anything major to not overstep Voltron. He goes to some smaller planets/systems and typically stays for a few days after he's done helping sometimes a week. Eventually the other Paladins encounter him on a planet he's been staying on for the last several months, all the aliens on the planet are androgynous and hermaphroditic and there's this one person that Lance seems particularly close to. Keith has come to realize with Lance gone he loves him and vowed to tell him when he saw him next. But seeing him again and with a potential partner, Keith couldn't do that. Not to Lance or himself. So while Keith trains more to work off his jealousy so he can be around Lance and his partner. At some point Lance and Keith get to be alone and have a sunset moment and Keith, realizing how beautiful Lance looks in the setting sun, has to leave because if he doesn't he's going to ruin whatever little relationship he has with Lance. Lance gets irritated because Keith is running away, Keith remarks he's not the run who ran. Lance shoots back with what Keith have done had Lance not left? Besides Keith never voiced to anyone else about leaving Lance did. Lance took a break he wasn't leaving Voltron forever but for Keith, all their adventures without Lance felt like a lifetime. The two continue to argue to which leads them rolling down a hill and kissing. Keith is stiff. Lance is frozen. Both enjoy the kiss but don't know how to progress. Keith goes back to his room in the Castle trying to process everything because while he enjoyed the kiss he could've practically ruined a relationship, one Lance actually seemed genuinely happy in and ruined even his own relationship with the former Paladin.

Meanwhile Lance goes back to his best friend on the planet that Keith mistook for Lance's partner. The bsf freaks when they hear Lance and Keith kissed amd congratulates Lance only for Lance to stop them. Despite having enjoyed the kiss Keith most likely didn't because he ran off.

The next morning Lance is seeing his friends off. "Have you made your mind up about coming back with us?" Wonders Allura.

Keith's head snaps up. Eyes now focused on the former Blue Paladin. "You're.. . . . You're joining us again?"

"N-not this time. But I'm sure I'll be joining you guys again soon." With that everyone but Keith and Lance hug and say goodbye. Just days after Team Voltron leaves another alien species (not the Galra) invade as they have had rocky balance remaining peace between the two alien species. Lance gets into his former armor sending a distress signal that instantly goes to the Castle. However, something goes wrong so Team Voltron doesn't get the distress signal until months after so when they go back the planet is completely demolished. The kind species and Lance are nowhere to be found. Hunk is the one to find the piece of armor that Lance sent the signal with but there's no Lance. It looks as if there are no survivors. They then come across some guards from the invasive species that is keeping the kind one as slaves. The kicker? Lance is set to marry the heir to the throne to keep a peace between the two as he is a Paladin and to them a Paladin is as good as royalty. Everyone else tries to volunteer to take Lances place but since Lance offered first he is the one to be Wed. The only thing that can stop it is if they find a rare item (gem, flower, etc) that shows true love. It glows differently for different people. They go and find it. When Keith touches it is glows red and blue.

Meanwhile, Lance is in his own separate room from the heir having doubts. Yes, he came up and still plans on going through with the marriage however, he can't help but think of Keith when he pictures himself getting married. The heir uses magic to spy on Lance and sees Keith in his heart. Frustrated the heir slips a love potion into Lance's drink at dinner and Lance thinks he's been in love with heir this whole time. He gets excited to see his friends again and goes on and on about how fantastic the heir is. This crushes Keith. When Lance sees Keith holding the rare item he asks to hold it. It doesn't change. Team Voltron wants to stop the wedding but if their friend seems to be genuinely happy how can they? They don't want to seem selfish when Lance only asked for a break/space only to drag him back if he doesn't want to. Later, Hunk and Allura over hear the heir plotting to take out the kinder alien race which they want to put a stop to. In fear that the other members might find out their plot the heir grabs the others - Pidge from some of the techs, Coran with the cooks, Keith training with some of the fighters, and Shiro as he's just simply walking around - and throws them in a dungeon to prevent them from intervening at the wedding.

Cut to Lance with his bsf and the spare. They see the rare item and interested they ask to see it. That's when Lance notes it changing colors as his bsf and their lovers colors are a yellow-green color and lilac. That's when Lance gets informed of what the item really is. Taking it back, Lance goes to confront the heir. He asks the heir to hold the item. It goes from Lance's blue and red to pure obsidian - no room for any type of love in their heart. Lance is furious. Despite knowing that Keith is now his soul mate he's still under the love potion and still has love for the heir. The heir then makes Lance take the rest of the potion which makes him forget about everything and anyone else aside from the heir.

In their prison Team Voltron is frustrated in what to do. They need to escape but their cell is made up of lasers that could burn them easily if they try to escape. Keith doesn't care, even if Lance does genuinely care for the heir it's clear the heir does not return his feelings and wants to free Lance from a marriage that will eventually go down. Shiro has to stop him from being an idiot and getting hurt. Soon a sound similar to a bell chimes meaning that the first part prior to the actual ceremony for 'I do's' is about to start. Even if they were lucky enough to get out there was no way that they'd be able to make it to Lance in time. Just then the spare comes and sets them free with four speed bikes and they set off to the ceremony (Keith and the spare going at ungodly amount of speed).

In his room getting ready, Lance feels down and he doesn't know why; he loves the heir utterly and completely so why does it feel wrong? Because his friends and family aren't there? That's when his bsf talks about Keith. Lance is confused because why Keith? Yes they've gotten to a point of rivalry and friendship but why not bring up everyone else? Bsf then reminds Lance of everything Lance has ever mentioned about Keith. This infuriates Lance because if he ever did feel or Keith in the romantic way whatever happened to that? How did he stop and start falling for the heir? However, Lance starts feeling ill and that's when bsf realizes that Lance has been given a love potion and an exaggerous amount which his body is not handling well. Lance insists on going through with the wedding potion or no potion. At the altar, Team Voltron arrives just as the ceremony is getting started. Lance is happy to see his friends but they aren't happy to see the couple. Lance then starts hiccuping to the point that he passes out. The heir laughs and says that the only way Lance will wake is if the person his heart beats for kisses him. The heir looks smug as she taunts that Lance's heart only beats for them. The heir then kisses Lance on the lips which also solidifies their marriage. Lance doesn't wake, doesn't make a sound. The bsf, their lover, and most of Team Voltron looks at Keith. Keith kisses Lance's forehead begging for the former Paladin to wake up. Everything is still for a few moments, Keith thinking that the rare item got it wrong and that he and Lance aren't meant to be together. Lance then starts stirring and is confused about what is going on as the last thing he remembers is sending out the distress signal then offering the marriage of convenience. The heir is frustrated then starts telling the guards to take away the Paladins and start executing the kinder aliens. The spare then comes in and challenges the heir to a fight so the spare can take the throne. The heir laughs but accepts the challenge. The heir loses. In a irritated cry asks how the younger sibling what they plan to do with the other aliens. The now crowned heir remarks 'peace' and proposes to bsf.

Happy, Lance promises to come back for the big day. Which isn't that necessary since most things are already set up so they marry that day.

Afterwards, the two alien species start rebuilding the damaged planet with some guidance from Lance. As the Paladins get ready to say goodbye the newly wed couple starts saying goodbye to Lance, wondering if they could convince him to stay just a little bit longer. Keith, Pidge, and Hunk are confused that's when Lance reveals he's going with them again, if they don't mind. Pidge and Hunk tackle him to the ground happy to have their best friend/brother back. Lance informs them that he still doesn't remember much only offering the marriage: Shiro, Pidge and Hunk get a similar look on their faces as they know they're going to be teasing Keith for a l o n g time for the whole true love/soul mate thing. Keith gets irritated and starts chasing them to they can knock it off.

Later that evening when Lance is alone on the bridge he pulls out a small piece from the rare item still glowing red and blue, because Lance remembers most of what happened just not who kissed him. He decides to keep it to himself. Until he's sure both he and Keith are ready to talk about it. Shiro goes to the bridge and catches Lance with the piece. Lance then confides in Shiro most of what he's comfortable with (meaning the first drop of the love potion) Keith spots them and instead of joining starts eavesdropping. He hears them. That when Lance confesses to a gap in his memory of his bsf reminding him off all the things he said about Keith. And Shiro, like the big brother he is, calls Keith out for eavesdropping and forces the two alone together to talk.

Lance starts chasing Pidge and Hunk the next day for their teasing with Keith chases Shiro.

Summary: Keith and Lance switch bodies.

Author Note: This is Keith/Ruby and Lance/Rachel.

Warning! There is a gratuitous amount of swearing (courtesy of Lance).

"Body Swap"

Keith and Lance trudged back into the castle, both trailing after the rest of the team. It had been a rough battle, both Red and Black having taken a lot of damage. It wasn't physical damage or even electrical damage, but the Red and Black Lions had been hit with a strange weapon before they were able to form Voltron.

Allura, Hunk, and Pidge walked into the lounge, but before Keith followed them, Lance pulled him aside. He could tell the battle was rough on his Commander and best friend. They clasped hands, and Lance pulled Keith in for a quick hug. Keith relished in the comfort his best friend was giving him and returned the hug with a gentle ferocity that initially startled Lance.

"Why don't you retire for the night? I know your girlfriend wouldn't mind."

Keith released Lance. "You know what? That sounds like a good idea, especially after the battle we had. Thanks, Lance."

"No problem, buddy. Good night."

"Good night." Keith passed the lounge and entered his room to see his girlfriend digging stuff out of a box and putting the item up or away. Apparently, she had used the battle as a chance to move the last of her stuff into their room and was officially moved into the room they shared.

She looked up when the door opened, pausing in putting a picture of her with the Masako family (taken before she was hired at the castle), and smiled when she saw Keith. "Hi, sweetheart."

Keith smiled back. "Hello, darling."

Ruby finished unpacking the box and dropped the box in the corner, ready for the trash. She approached Keith and hugged him, feeling the tension in his shoulders. She released him, grabbed his hands, and led him to the bed. She removed the top of his jumpsuit and tossed it aside. She knelt on the bed and patted the spot in front of her. Keith sat down, and Ruby started massaging his shoulders, working the tension out. Keith sighed in relief. "That feels so good, darling."

"Good. I'm glad." Ruby moved her hands from his shoulders to his hair, playing with it a little until Keith shifted slightly. He stood up and offered his hand to her, helping her off the bed when she accepted it. They both changed into their pajamas before climbing into the bed, Keith resting his head against his girlfriend's chest as they fell asleep.

The next morning dawned bright and warm, the light spilling into Lance's and Rachel's room. The light roused Rachel, whose eyes landed on her boyfriend, who was still holding her in a protective, swetheart cradle. The previous night's activity resulted in them sleeping sans clothes.

Rachel smiled as "Lance" was waking up. "Hey baby...come here." She leaned up and gave him a kiss. He responded back until his hands landed on bare skin. His eyes popped open and landed on Rachel. He scooted back away from her in shock. "R-Rachel?"

"What's wrong, baby?"

"Why am I here?"

Rachel didn't know why he was asking her such a weird question, let alone why he was acting so weird.

In the next room, "Keith" felt lips against his head for a second before soft hands massaged his scalp. "Mmmmm....Rachel."

Ruby's hands halted in their movement when her best friend's name left her boyfriend's lips. Was he cheating on her? "What the hell, Keith?!"

"Keith" woke up and screamed, seeing he wasn't with his girlfriend. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAA!"

A few thumps were heard from the next room before the door opened, revealing Rachel and "Lance." Both were dressed now.

Keith (in Lance's body) saw his girlfriend with tears in her eyes. "Darling."

Her head whipped around, hearing the pet name Keith used for her, but she saw Lance. "Sweetheart?"

Lance (in Keith's body) moved towards Rachel. "Doll?"

Rachel moved back slightly. "What's going on?"

Keith and Lance looked at each other before Lance (in Keith's body) answered. "Somehow, Keith and I switched bodies."

"How? When?" Ruby asked, her tears drying up. Her Keith wasn't cheating on her.

"It must have been during the battle, but it took effect last night," Keith (in Lance's body) replied. He moved towards Ruby, wanting to hug her but couldn't because he was in his best friend's body.

"This is so weird," Rachel murmured. Ruby took Rachel into her arms. Keith and Lance came over and attempted to hug the correct girlfriend.

After a couple of minutes, Keith and Lance stepped back, leaving their girls in each other's arms. Keith (in Lance's body) said, "We should tell the team before there's an attack."

The group of four made their way to the empty control room. Keith (in Lance's body) pushed the alarm button to summon the team. While they waited for the team to arrive, Ruby and Rachel moved to the opposite side of the control room.

Lance (in Keith's body) turned to face his best friend. "Hang on. Did you see my girlfriend naked?!?!"

Keith (in Lance's body) blushed at the reminder of that morning. "Well, yeah, but-"

Lance (in Keith's body) took a menacing step towards Keith like he was about to fight him but was stopped by the arrival of Allura, Pidge, and Hunk.

"What's the big idea sounding the alarm? There's no attack!" Pidge groused.

"Well, there's an issue that arose this morning," Keith (in Lance's body) started. He was about to continue, but the alarm sounded again, and the view screen popped on, showing that an attack had just occurred.

"We need the lions!" Allura announced, and she pushed the button to raise the platform. Keith (in Lance's body) started heading for portal #1 at the same time Lance (in Keith's body) was heading for #2, but they realized the issue and switched mid run. Everyone was shuttled off to their lions. (Lance (in Keith's body) was in Black while Keith (in Lance's body) was in Red).

Lance (in Keith's body) couldn't help but grin at the thought of being leader. "FUCK YES! I GET TO LEAD! Put the keys in, bitches!"

"Oh, dear lord," Keith (in Lance's body) muttered under his breath. "Just launch."

The lions started taking out the Doom fighters. Even though the fighters were taken out, the Red and Black Lions' moves weren't as polished as they usually were.

Just then, a robeast coffin was beamed down to the planet, catching the team's attention.

"Oh, shit, a robeast! What do we do, Keith?!" Lance (in Keith's body) exclaimed.

"Uhhh, you are Keith!" Pidge shot back.

"We need Voltron!" Keith (in Lance's body) replied.

"Uh, right. Activate interlocks! Dynotherms connected! Infracells up! Megathrusters are go!"

"Let's go, Voltron Force!"

"Form feet and legs! Form arms and body! And I'll form the head!" Lance (in Keith's body) took a deep breath as Voltron was formed. He did it. Now, he needed to keep it going. As excited as he was to lead for once, it was a bit overwhelming, so he decided to end it easily. "Form blazing sword!"

Dispatching the robeast with the sword was surprisingly easy, and chasing away Lotor was as easy as firing a missile at his ship. He allowed Allura to do the honors as she had as much right as anyone to do it (considering how much the creep came after her).

Once the Drule threat was taken care of, the lions broke apart and retreated to their dens, and the team met back up in the control room. Keith and Lance were cornered by the other three pilots, but it was mostly Allura questioning Lance (in Keith's body).

"Are you all right, Keith? You seemed a little off today," Allura mentioned.

"I'll be okay, Princess," Lance (in Keith's body) replied, trying to respond like Keith would.

"Maybe turning in early would be a good idea," Allura suggested.

"And relaxing before that!" Pidge piped in.

"And I can make sure he does," Keith (in Lance's body) chimed in, sliding an arm around his friend's shoulders, just like Lance would do.

Lance (in Keith's body) nodded at the group as a whole. "We'll be in the lounge unless there's another attack."

Lance and Keith entered the lounge and were surprised to see their girlfriends in their comfortable clothes. Ruby was shuffling a deck of colorful cards, and Rachel was putting the finishing touches on the mass of pillows and blankets on the floor.

Keith (in Lance's body) stepped a bit closer to his girlfriend. "Darling, what's this?"

"You guys need something to take your minds off what happened, so Rachel and I figured playing some games might help." Ruby shrugged. "It'll at least pass the time."

"And we can have a sleepover here in the lounge," Rachel added, sitting down across from her best friend.

The two switched pilots sat down opposite each other on the two open sides of the low table that the girls had set up. Ruby dealt seven cards to each player before flipping over the top card of the deck, thus starting the game.

The quartet played game after game, only pausing when one of the girls left to get food and drink (dinnertime). After eating dinner, the games resumed, and they played until Rachel yawned. Once the brunette yawned, they finished the round they were currently on.

Ruby put away the cards before joining Rachel in the mass of pillows and blankets. The girls were cuddled up together on one side, while the guys were sleeping alone on the other sides. None of them fell asleep easily, but eventually, they did.

Early the next morning, before dawn, Lance woke up. He rubbed his eyes and looked around. He saw Keith to his left, and his eyes widened before he looked down. He was back in his own body! He grinned and carefully made his way over to the girls. He saw Ruby curled around Rachel. He smiled as he gently moved Ruby's arm off his girlfriend's side. He cupped Rachel's cheek and whispered, "Doll."

Rachel stirred and opened her eyes, blinking slowly. She registered that Lance was kneeling in front of her. "Lance?"

"It's me, Doll."

Rachel reached out to him, and he scooped her up into his arms. She buried her face into his neck, inhaling his cologne scent. He carried her out of the lounge and back to their room.

A few minutes later, Ruby woke up, noticing that both Rachel and Lance were gone. At least she hoped it was Lance. She carefully crawled over to where Keith was. "Keith?"

Keith roused slightly. "Darling?"

Ruby's eyes filled with tears. She snuggled into his arms. "I missed you so much!"

Keith realized at this point that he was back in his own body and wrapped his arms around his girlfriend. "I don't want to go through that again. It hurt to not be able to comfort you through this."

When there was no response, Keith craned his neck to look at his girlfriend and realized that she had fallen back asleep in his arms. He gently laid his head down on hers and closed his eyes, falling back asleep as well.

But I knew, the moment I went through my heaped inbox and saw your user – I had to try. You were one of my first supporters and really inspired me to get this blog as far as it went. So even if you’ve moved on, my return to VLD hell is in your honour.

Binned Jacket

Perhaps the filter system of the castle was in need of servicing as Lance’s grimaced away his inability to breath coherently. Frustration was not a foreign feeling to him, of course not. He had always dived straight into arguments, letting his insecurities burn his bridges and bloat a boisterous ego. Regardless, he stewed in a beginning anger that left his cheeks hot. Of course, anger was a secondary emotion, it built on Lance’s unexplainable sadness.

Scratch that- his sadness was most definitely explainable.

“You got rid of my jacket?” the words had left his mouthbefore his thoughts could gather.

Allura’s gleaming look inferred that she had not taken his abhorrence seriously. Shiro beside her seemingly used to and unfazed by his loud tone. The team seemed incredibly nonchalant about what he considered a very personal attack.

“As I was saying, you are defending this Universe- ambassadors to many systems now. I just need to give you all that look,” Allura expressed, an uncalloused hand pressed against her chest as she preached. That look of far-gonejoy in her eyes was one that would have brought a smile to Lance’s face.

Lance could not help but snark back. “You only scrapped my clothes.” The twisted expression of his face made him feel moments away fromglowering. “You didn’t even just ask me not to wear it, you threw it.”

“Not threw, binned,” Pidge smiled from the couch, eyes never leaving her tablet. “Rest assured I’d be there if there was some coat-tossing game, my new gadget needs something to test its strengths.”

Lance could not believe it. Well, he could. It was becoming common to be laughed off by his teammates, for his possessions to be considered with little regard. He looked around, Shiro appeared to only be standing by to ensure Lance didn’t escalate this situation. Keith was arms-crossed and sighing. Coran smiling away behind Allura. Hunk was completely absorbed in his latest recipe transcription… bless him.

“Lance, I am going to give you new clothes,” Allura laughed, although it truly sounded humourless. “You understand that, don’t you? I am just tidying your appearance.”

“Pretty-boy does not want to hear that,” Keith said, whistling lowly afterwards. Shooting Lance, a quippy smile.

His jacket. His homely possession. His most genuine reminder of his sister Rachel who wore a matching copy.

“This is ridiculous,” Lance spat. “Where is your respect?” His eyes zeroed onto Allura, he was determined to hold her gaze, her gleeful expression fell in an instant.

Like the rotting of an apple, Shiro’s eyebrows drew together, a recognisable anger in his expression. Lance felt a tinge of a sting, string strangling his heart that struggled to beat evenly. His failing hero held his eyes momentarily. No apologetic look.

“Lance, refrain from such language,” Shiro said, his fingers running through his hair as he seemed to try to hide a huff of annoyance.

“It’s just a jacket, Lance,” Keith offered, a plain smile tempted his features. Dark eyebrows drawn together in parodied confusion. Lance’s chest constricted whilst his cheeks broke a hot and maddened red. Keith was finally warming from the cold rival he once was, but Lance felt revolted instead of pleased.

“It. Is. Not. ‘Just a jacket,’ you asshole,” Lance scoffed, his fingers making air quotation marks.

Shiro sounded breathless. “Lance!”

He was almost certain that a scolding was supposed tocontinue. Lance pushed his arms out, waving them off as he lifted his chin. “No,Shiro, you all-” the words fell from his mouth harshly. “You all can just listen.”

He was certain even Pidge was finally looking at him, shifting uncomfortably in her spot. Fingers running tirelessly against her tech as she sucked in a breath.

He made eye contact with Hunk, who had finally put down his work. The latter’s face has scrunched, his lips pointed downward. But Lance had trust. Hunk looked at him with concern but not contempt, he was worried, but he had not placed forth any expression of judgement. Bless him truly.

“You ‘binned’ my only reminder of my family, of my sister.” He was certain he saw Pidge lean back, shoulders tense and square. He turned to Allura, frustrated look unbreaking. “Tell me her name.”

“What?” She stuttered, wavering ever so slightly, a humbling discomfort appearing through her faulter.

“What is my sister’s name?” Lance repeated, an eyebrow raising.He turned. “Shiro, do you even know, I’ve told you.”

The man bristled, but then rubbed the back of his neck, eyes a wobble of confliction. “I don’t know.”

Keith’s voice came quiet but blunt. “How is this relevant, why does any of that matter?”

“Because it just does!” Lance said, fighting the urge to grab whoever was closest and shook them until they understood. “My sister, my person, the one who knows me better than any of you.”

“Lance-“ Allura tried her voice but fell silent. The galaxy fellsilent.

“But I thought you knew me, I thought you respected me, but what you did.” Lance struck a fierce look to Allura. “And to what you all allowed, encouraged. That was anything but.”

Shiro looked stricken, the first to look truly ashamed. “Lance,” he said, so quietly. His call of his name was different to Allura’s. It was remorseful, it was an attempt to tend a wound, but it was like a Band-Aid to a bullet-hole.

“We aren’t some team,” Lance suddenly shifted his gaze, hisfury burned as tears on the edge of his eyes. He steeled his stare to the ceiling. “All I had to connect me to Earth, and you took it from me. Rachel. I don’t know if she’s safe, if I’ll ever see her again.”

Breathe in. Breathe out. Breathe in.

Allura had a hand on her chest when he finally composed himself.

“I’m here for the Galaxy that needs us. I’m here for you all. You need to meet me halfway because we aren’t teasing children nor unfriendly co-workers. We are a family, so act like it,” Lance said, the scold falling easy to his lips. How often had he once spoken like this to the family youngsters?

He looked back on his once trusted team, their slack expression. Lips itching to say something but choking on their knowledge that they was no listenable answer.

“Now, get my jacket back.”

For the amount of time Lance spent in the MedBay, he was still ridiculously twitchy around the pods. It was truly humiliating – and that’s just in his own mind. If the others were to see how the cheerful little beeps from the pods made him flinch, every time and without fail, he'd collapse in on himself.

Well, someone may ask, if the pods freak you out, why don’t you try getting injured less?

And it’s a decent suggestion, really. In his time on the Castle, Lance has genuinely done everything he can to watch where he’s going, take more careful steps. He can’t quite help all his injuries on missions – can’t let the others be out of commission, we’d collapse without them, protect them protect them protect them – but he’d honestly say that his problems lie less with his constant need for medical care and more in the amount of time he spends cleaning the room. Medical areas need to be constantly sterilized, you see, and that job falls on Lance.

Oh, that same someone may say, I suppose that makes sense. But if that’s the case, why don’t you try trading chores every once in a while? It might reduce your stress.

And that’s an excellent suggestion! Only, cleaning the MedBay is not exactly… well, technically, the job should already be switched around. Lance has just decided to quietly take on the task himself. It has nothing to do with the other paladin's abilities – Lance is sure that they’re plenty capable and thorough – but four or five months into their journey (or maybe six or seven, but it’s been so long now that Lance has forgotten) Lance started to notice a pattern. A familiar pattern.

A horrible pattern.

At home, in Varadero, he’s surrounded by amazing people. His Ma, the overworked and exhausted nurse, who keeps a smile on her face and works herself to the bone to keep her family afloat. Veronica, the astrophysicist, who never has and never will let anyone tell her she isn’t strong enough. Marco, the olympian, who’s the most patient man Lance has ever met. Luis, the mechanic, who is above all else soft and kind, and who cares more deeply than the deepest oceans. Lisa, the doctor, the advocate for those who are ignored. Rachel, the artist, who can look at the plainest canvas and see colours that have yet to be invented. His father, the ghost, who Lance does not remember, but whose stories of bravery and support Lance grew up hearing every bedtime, without fail.

In space, on the Castle, he is homesick in all his awe of his friends. The Princess, noble and regal and whose heart aches for every other soul who has ever lived. Shiro, who has been beaten down and terrorized and used but who stands up every day and smiles and cheers the rest of them on. Coran, who has lost more than Lance has ever known, but who continues to give and give of himself as if he is unafraid of eventually running dry. Hunk, kind and thoughtful and witty and endlessly loving. Pidge, smart as a whip and who loves her family more than anyone has ever loved anything ever before. Keith who is endlessly noble and brave and who has been hurt but who picks up his own pieces and uses them to heal others.

And then there is Lance – who is kind, but hotheaded, who is smart, but only just, who tries and tries but almost always falls short. Lance who is scared and Lance who thrives in structure but wilts in rigidity. Lance who contradicts himself and trips over air and struggles to find the right words and who, most simply, is not one of the greats.

It’s very easy to forget his value, when he’s surrounded by people the universe cannot afford to lose. So Lance does what he has always done, when his presence costs more than it is worth – he fills in the holes, and creates his own value. Often, his value is in service. If he can assure that the needs of the more valuable are met, then he is comfortable in knowing that he is of use. If the valuable need his help then he must be of some value himself, right?

As of now, the best way he can serve is to pick up the slack. Shiro has nightmares that keep him up at night? So did Ma, so did Lisa. He’s good at talking people back to sleep. Pidge needs someone around to be a testing dummy? Veronica had needed the same, once upon a time, before she’d gotten a real assistant. Coran needs some help in keeping the Castle up and running, in small repairs and regular maintenance? Lance has always been good with his hands, and grew up running in and out of Luis’s shop.

Eventually, after months of everyone getting busier and busier and more stressed by the second and Lance trying to subtly and smoothly lighten the load, some tasks fell to Lance as if they had always been his. MedBay duty was one of them.

Lance will do his duty.

He hopes he will one day be valuable enough to have a purpose that does not bring him so much pain.

He does not have very much hope.
