honestly the one of the things that makes me the most sad about this hockey romance / booktok drama is that now so many hockey fans have a negative impression of hockey romances and sports romances. There are so, so many wonderful, queer romances out there that are doing wonderful, nuanced, and intentional things within the sports romance genre, and I hate that now people are looking down on them.
Here's some reasons that I love sports romances:
It’s a celebrity romance, but more of a niche celebrity romance. This isn’t a Hollywood super star that everyone in the world knows their name, BUT they often do have a dedicated fan base and are still in the public eye. It brings up really interesting discussions of fame and power and how much of yourself you keep private. So you get a lot of the good celebrity romance tropes and settings (like secret relationship, having to do interviews, traveling to new cities) but on a more niche and interesting scale
And bouncing off of that, with queer sports romances you get a lot of really interesting discussions of coming out, how you present your queerness to the world, how much of yourself is “owed” to the people around you vs yourself, which is very interesting when explored through a sports culture lense and I really enjoy the discussions of queer identity, culture, and community that come out of it. And particularly if it a romance between two players, there's a lot of really interesting queer nuances to explore
There are so many different pairings that can happen, but most of them kind of boil down to player/player, player/sports professional, player/normie, and each of these dynamics are interesting to me every time, especially when exploring teammate dynamics! And exploring how fame affects each of these things!
Found family! Your team is your family! And everyone has silly nicknames and rituals with each other and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy
With every romance, you pretty much know that it’s gonna end with a Happily Ever After, which is why we love the genre. But sometimes that can take the “surprise” out of a romance and its structure. Within sports romances, you don’t know how the game is going to go! They could win! They could lose! That affects the characters either way! And there’s been several sports romances that had me on the edge of my seat cause I genuinely had no idea which way the championship game was gonna go! I like that extra plot element to keep things interesting
I also like it when you can tell the author is a big fan of their sport, and even if EYE don’t know anything about the sport, they’re generally good at writing things in a makes sense and makes the action interesting and keeps me hooked. It’s also just nice to step into the world the author loves!
Genuinely I just think that queer sports romances are doing so many interesting things, and have such interesting niches and nuances to the stories they’re telling! And they should not be looked down upon by hockey fans OR romance fans who have witnessed this booktok drama go down and now don’t want to touch hockey romances with a ten foot pole.
Here are some of the queer sports romances I recommend for anyone who wants to get into the genre:

This is by no means an exhaustive list or even exhaustive themes. I grouped things into broad categories and am happy to go into more detail if needed/wanted.

top 5 horror book recommendations? it's spooky season and i need to get my read on...
Hell yeah! Gonna break this down a little. First an obligatory rehash of books I always recommend for this, these are like all-time faves for me
Wounds/North American Lake Monsters by Nathan Ballingrud - can't choose between these two, so they're tied for my favorite single author short story collection. Nathan Ballingrud is one of my favorite writers of all time
Her Body and Other Parties by Carmen Maria Machado - a very very close second for my favorite single-author short story collection. Machado is a beautiful writer and finding an author writing such powerful horror from a queer woman's perspective was world changing for me.
The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley Jackson - COME ON!!!! You might have already read this but consider reading it again! Absolute classic.
The Cipher by Kathe Koja - dark, fucked up meditation on art and addiction and toxic relationships. I think about this book all the time. A guy finds a weird hole in his apartment basement and then everything goes wrong (first slowly and then very very quickly)
Red X by David Demchuk - talked about this a lot before too but I really do love it. Fictional story inspired by real life serial killings that took place in Toronto's gay village over decades. The author inserts essays throughout the book that makes it part memoir as well. A supernatural story about real queer trauma.
--
Okay with that out of the way, here's some recommendations for stuff I think would be fun for Halloween specifically
Echoes edited by Ellen Datlow - OKAY CHEATING I ALSO RECOMMEND THIS ALL THE TIME BUT IT'S A PERFECT OCTOBER BOOK!!! Fuck-off huge ghost story anthology. Huge range of tones, pretty diverse group of contributing authors, it's my all-time favorite anthology.
Slewfoot by BROM - this one's got major autumn vibes. It's a story of a woman in Puritan New England who's accused of witchcraft. It's also a story about the devil. Kind of. The print version has really amazing paintings by the author, but I've heard this is also good in audio.
Come Closer by Sara Gran - this is a great little novella. Possession story that really packs a punch. I can't really say much more than that, but it's not a huge time investment and I think it's really worthwhile.
Carmilla by Joseph Sheridan LeFanu - if you can, get the version edited by Carmen Maria Machado (she adds in some great footnotes and it has some neat art too). This is a classic and also quite a brisk read. The original lesbian vampire story.
Silver Nitrate by Silvia Moreno-Garcia - here's a new release for you! I always watch a ton of horror movies in October, and if you're anything like me maybe you'll want to read a horror novel about horror movies. This story follows a female film editor in 90s Mexico and her washed up actor friend as they help a retired filmmaker complete his famously unfinished last film, which he had been making with a former Nazi occultist before strange misfortunes and the occultist's mysterious disappearance forced production to shut down.
Okay that was double the amount of recommendations requested so I'm stopping here. Haha don't look in the tags don't worry about it there's nothing there you're crazy

book haul book haul 📚 🎉
they were on sale i swear
Okay, I did spend a bit more than I should have -coughs- But I need them all.
Okay, genuinely, re: the fiction books, I was just gonna grab The Graveyard Book because I've wanted it for a while - I mean, it's Neil Gaiman, come on - and it was on sale plus the buy one get one half off, but obviously that meant I had to grab another book and I couldn't decide between two but I couldn't just get three and... Yeah.
But seriously I've been so burnt out I'm getting crispy. ❤️‍🔥 🔥 I haven't had the brain 🧠 to do the things I need to do because I'm exhausted and I'm so friggin exhausted because I haven't been letting myself actually rest by doing the fun things. So. Fiction.
and it worked. I absolutely devoured One Dark Window in a day; it was great. The second book is supposed to get here tomorrow; it was cheaper on Amazon.
The nonfiction books are useful. Entering Hekate's Garden was definitely the most expensive but it didn't have the price on it and by the time I got up to the counter and found out, I was like fuckit because it's been on my wishlist for so long now.
I am liking Southern Cunning so far but I'm not very far in so we shall see.
Guess what my mother did the same day I got these? Yeah she did the exact same thing. I showed off the books because I knew we had the same taste and she'd be interested in the ones I got. I was not expecting her to also have bought The Hexologists. smh, go figure.
So I ran back real quick and switched it out for a sequel to another fiction book she'd gotten prior that was also on the buy one get one half off table. I don't remember the title and I didn't get a picture of it. I think the first book was called Her Royal Majesty's Coven and the second was the something cabinet.

Okay so a year ago I made a reclist of books that have a similar vibe to Captive Prince, and then @getbeatrized commented on it saying that they wish there was one for the Him series by Sarina Bowen and Elle Kennedy.
Now this isn’t the exact same because they’re not all m/m friends-to-lovers hockey series, but a good few of them are so hopefully they’re useful to someone:
• Season’s Change by Cait Nary (This was a book I really enjoyed and cannot fathom how it has less than 4 stars on goodreads. Like, I debated making a post about it a few weeks ago to try and get people to read and review.)
• Game Changers series by Rachel Reid (Shane and Ilya!!!).
• All of Taylor Fitzpatrick’s hockey books (The author also has an AO3.)
• Scoring Chances series by Avon Gale.
• Catherine Cloud’s books.

Book Review: Business or Pleasure by Rachel Lynn Solomon
Tumblr media
Cute, cute, cute! Celebrity-who-falls-in-love-with-a-normie romances are always entertaining, but this one had added elements of humor, sex positivity, and good communication.
Chandler and Finn have a lovely connection, at least once you get over the awkwardness of their first intimate encounter, which moonlights as a one night stand gone wrong. So, SO wrong. ☠️ He's an actor who's famous for being on a popular teen werewolf show, The Nocturnals, over a decade ago. (It's sort of a cross between Teen Wolf and The Vampire Diaries.) She's hired to ghostwrite his memoir. Moreover, after he learns how disastrously unsatisfying their night was together, he asks her to give him pointers and they help each other grow inside and outside of the bedroom.
I liked the Comic Con backdrop, with Chandler and Finn traveling from city to city to attend cons. It provided an element of forced proximity while also grounding readers in Finn's profession as well as adding changeability to the plot. I also thought the story relayed an important message about communicating wants and desires in a relationship.
Though the pacing could be stilted at times, and I sometimes felt disconnected from the characters, this was enjoyable overall. I had a good time.
Thank you to NetGalley and Berkley for the ARC in exchange for my review.

not sure what you have/haven't read but....
spirit of the west by teen_dean (full AU, i just finished it and now i'm obsessed--this is absolutely one for the deangirls)
Everyone's a Critic by Englandwouldfall (full AU, this one is just very fun and i have a soft spot for it because i love it when fic writers let cas be bitchy)
carry on by foolondahill17 (canon divergent after mid-season 15, it's VERY heavy but really good--actually one of the first things i read that made me get back into fandom)
The Shattered One by MissAnnThropic (canon divergent post season 4, in this universe, angels procreate by combining their graces together to make a new angel and cas and dean combine some of cas's grace and some of dean's soul to make a baby...which makes it sound super weird and it kinda is but it is really, really good I swear)
The Angel in the Marble by zuzeca (plays with canon, i won't spoil exactly how. this is actually shorter than all the others but i need more people to read it because i'm kind of obsessed with the cosmic horror in this one)
The Harvelle Gospels by LaurytheLatrator (AU where Jo is the righteous woman, i'm assuming since you are such a jogirl that you have already read this one but just in case you haven't, this is SO good)
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! CAN'T WAIT TO READ THESE

book review || Cackle by Rachel Harrison
video review || Halloweekend Readathon — Reading Vlog 213: 5 books in 4 weekends
The. fucking. vibes! ✨
From where this started, I thought it would be a like, but that ending made it an official love. There is not a lot of plot, it’s slow and meandering, but damn, I was so drawn in and enveloped in this world every time I picked it up.
I want to liken this book to Circe or Eleanor Oliphant. It’s so character-focused and revolves around Annie’s life. I rooted for Annie to stand up for herself, to take charge of her life, to take the energy she was wasting on a man and use it for herself. Sophie was both a good and bad influence on her, in equally wonderful ways. (Sophie is also living the dream life) Her character was also well explored, slowly peeling back layers to learn about all she’s endured and gone through to live her perfect life, but she still needs to learn new things sometimes.
As I said, the vibes were immaculate. Harrison made this sleepy, small town jump off the page and seduce me with its perfection. Similar to the Starless Sea, this brought together all the best things in life, but in a fall setting. Occasionally got a bit spooky, but I definitely wouldn’t call this a horror book. I’d go with magical realism, instead.
A short, easy read that I sort of want to re-read every October now.

A 5 Star read for me |
Five freaking stars!
I was more thinking about 4 stars throughout the book but the ending sold it for me, 5 stars. The writing is superb, all the characters were very well written and had their own unique personalities, the romance wass good and didn't overshadow the plot
I know I probably shouldn't but I'm kind of a fan of the nightmare
⚠️⚠️ SPOILER ⚠️⚠️
Also I'm kind of glad that it didn't have a happy ending. I don't know if it will in the future but I'm very content with this first book not having one and I wouldn't mind it in future books either.

Read Between the Lines by Rachel Lacey
Tumblr media
Today's sapphic book of the day is Read Between the Lines by Rachel Lacey!
Summary: "Books are Rosie Taft’s life. And ever since she took over her mother’s beloved Manhattan bookstore, they’ve become her home too. The only thing missing is her own real-life romance like the ones she loves to read about, and Rosie has an idea of who she might like to sweep her off her feet. She’s struck up a flirty online friendship with lesbian romance author Brie, and what could be more romantic than falling in love with her favorite author?
Jane Breslin works hard to keep her professional and personal lives neatly separated. By day, she works for the family property development business. By night, she puts her steamier side on paper under her pen name: Brie. Jane hasn’t had much luck with her own love life, but her online connection with a loyal reader makes Jane wonder if she could be the one.
When Rosie learns that her bookstore’s lease has been terminated by Jane’s family’s business, romance moves to the back burner. Even though they’re at odds, there’s no denying the sparks that fly every time they’re together. When their online identities are revealed, will Jane be able to write her way to a happy ending, or is Rosie’s heart a closed book?"

January Reading Wrap-Up
Despite working every weekday that wasn't a national holiday or had school cancelled due to weather, I had a really good reading month. I don't think I'll have another one like it until school lets out. 🥴 I'm always so exhausted when I get home.
I ended 2023 with a Heartstopper novella and it prompted a reread of the comics. Then a few of my audio holds came in. I think my favorite is a tie between Mrs. Nash's Ashes by Sarah Adler and A Power Unbound by Freya Marske. Both were incredibly good in different ways. I may eventually post reviews of both of them, but we shall see.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Books read:
1. This Winter by Alice Oseman
2. If You'll Have Me by Eunnie
3-7. Heartstopper vol 1-5 by Alice Oseman
8. Mrs. Nash's Ashes by Sarah Adler
9. The Ex Talk by Rachel Lynn Solomon
10. My Fair Brady by Brian D. Kennedy
11. The Gentleman's Gambit by Evie Dunmore
12. A Power Unbound by Freya Marske
