she is chaotic good, a lesbian disaster and the comic relief of her group. any ethnic is fine but she would be in her early 20s. she loves to wear hawaiian shirts and would never be caught in a dress.

Thinking about Rachelle Vinberg detailing her experiences with the director Cary Fukunaga and the wider topic of women coming forward with stories of abuse. 

To sum it up, Rachelle, now 23 (known from being a skateboarder and an actress from Skate Kitchen & Betty) decided to talk about her relationship with Cary Fukunaga who she met when she was 18 and he was 39 (as far as I can gather from her instagram stories). She didn’t really talk about too many particularities of their relationship but he began a friendship with her, she was a virgin at the time, he started talking about sex with her frequently, asking her invasive questions, normalizing talking about it, started touching her more frequently and it all culminated with a sexual relationship. She classifies this as grooming and points out this has been a pattern with him corroborated publicly by other women. Two women (who are twins) have also come forward with a very similar story emphasizing nothing Cary has done was illegal and they are not telling this to ruin his career but to presumably support Rachelle. They share they were encouraged to engage in a threesome and even incestual activity with Cary, were touched inappropriately and asked sexually invasive questions as well. 

Nothing Cary did here is technically illegal and I hate how we partly due to online “dirtbag leftist” rhetoric have started to talk about emotional and sexual abuse through a) legality b) cancellation of the “guilty” party. The first one reduces abuse to a carceral punitive basis and is non-productive both from a feminist and a socialist lens, the other one centers on the abuser and fails to see reasons why women do decide to talk. 

There is a misogynist side to how the world fails to see women have always protected one another through the means of what we may as well call gossip, yes gossip, not always negative. If multiple women have terrible stories about the same men, we know to keep away. This should and has been the goal of most women sharing their experiences.

There is another important aspect to all of this which is almost deliberate obliviousness to power structures that influence all relationships. Famous people, men very often use age, gender, economic and cultural capital not only to abuse those around them (economically, emotionally, sexually) but to get away with this. This conversation should never focus on their career, their future prospects but on trying to at least mitigate damage done to more vulnerable individuals, to try to warn others in this case to be careful around those individuals. If we were hurt, abused, traumatized, our goal should always be to try to prevent others from experiencing the same fate. That’s at least how I have always felt.  

We will never be free until we destroy present hierarchies of power but we can at least try to help one another in the mean time.
