To explain The Goblin Problem and not go on a tag rant on someone else's reblog, I will explain it in the nutshell.

The Goblin Problem is when a story establishes a group of creatures to serve as recurrent antagonists (not necessarily all one species; in a lot of rpg games this can broadly apply to "monsters") THAT:

Are never negotiable, or the negotiable parties among them are Token Heroic Orcs- that is to say, they are seen as objectors or 'good' versions who have absolutely no connections to, and hold no objections toward you attacking, the rest of their brethren, who they have forsaken as the price to be paid for being good.

Have obvious unique technology; they may attack you with weapons found nowhere else in the game, demonstrate the ability to speak, have their own obvious language, tame a creature that nobody else tames so that it's thus impossible that they are stealing already-tamed specimens from someone else

Are characterized primarily or exclusively as raiders who attack others, with the justification this means they are inferior creatures parasitically dependent on Good, Civilized Settings, e.g. they cannot possibly be sustainably hunting, gathering, or practicing either nomadic or settled agriculture.

Are often defined as having no choice to be evil or are created by a greater evil to serve as thralls, and yet, will not under any circumstances be regarded as indoctrinated victims, or if that is mentioned, there will nonetheless be an overarching lack of narrative concern as to where or how the survivors should live after the greater evil is taken care of, or if effort should be made to challenge the indoctrination and give them the ability to choose their lives.

What this ultimately creates is that they are unambiguously people, who obviously check all the marks of sapience, who are quite possibly wearing clothes, but the goblin or orc exists as a stopgap. You want your fantasy hero to get into a swordfight but you don't want him to kill another human being. So you invent something that wields a sword but is in some way "not a person", which is senseless. Unless you want the nature of this swordfight to be that a chimpanzee picked up a knife, at which point they are not going to use reliable sword techniques.

Everything about the Keepers is so weird and uncomfortable lol. so after boy's release in january 2010 at sundance, variety released a review by a guy called peter debruge calling boy a "let-down" follow-up to two cars one night, which is like. fine i guess. That's Your Opinion. i suppose. buuuuuut

debruge's primary criticism of the movie, which he only deigned to write six short paragraphs about, was that the characters were "long-since severed from their tribal past," ostensibly because they weren't presented as the highly stereotypical indigenous archetypes he was expecting. and it was IMMEDIATELY criticized by pretty much anyone who knows more about indigenous existence than what you get from popular american media.

he also spells māori as maori the whole article, which is just incorrect and he should do better if his job was to be an educated film critic.

he interprets the pop culture references as tacky and unrealistic for his presupposed vision of what māori should be interested in, even going as far as to call the michael jackson fantasy sequences "random" which if you think about the film for more than two seconds, they are anything but.

debruge's claim that boy was devoid of māori culture was just, well, super wrong. wrong enough that pretty much every academic paper written on boy takes a chance to make a dig at debruge. it's almost a running joke. when the media studies journal of aotearoa new zealand devoted a whole edition to analyzing boy in 2012, one article was a direct response to debruge's claim that the movie lacked "that arthouse-ready anthropological edge" that indigenous films apparently are required to have. it's called "Shaking the Frame: Taika Waititi's Anti-Anthropological Edge," and it's very well written.

basically debruge's critique was and continues to be thoroughly destroyed, but guess what?

he's still variety's chief film critic.

My IRL friends will tell you, I have hated that man for a VERY long time (I get overly passionate about football lol) and I have NOT enjoyed having to see his gross face everywhere this season.

Literally, I don't give a shit who Taylor Swift dates BUT I hate Travis Kelce from a sports perspective and have for YEARS. (Also I love how everyone has just FORGOTTEN about that disgusting Catching Kelce show he did, like that shit was so dehumanizing) I think he's obnoxious and not nearly as good as they try and claim he is (the man is a fucking glorified oversized wide receiver maybe actually block someone and he can join the TE discussion)

I grew up during the height of the Patriots Dynasty and say what you want about them but KC will NEVER be able to touch the Brady / Gronk legacy. Like KC fans / Swifties can say what you want, but if you break down his stats compared to other top TEs he's not nearly as impressive as we're being told he is.

I also used to know a guy that now plays for the 49ers, so I have hoped on that bandwagon this season and have really enjoyed watching them play. So, I will be very enthusiastically rooting for them, hopefully they won't let us down!

like martha is treated like an actual equal because the dr in the past have always hated themselves, reflected back at them, but still shared the joy and comradarie during a joint adventure with said version of self. like even the time lord victorious two parter book - 8 was flirting and 10 flirted back but at the end of the day - both of em can carry themselves without the arrival of the other, leaving the eyerolling and mild disgust or disinterest aspect to ninth dr when he shared a room with them. like the dr not wanting to "date" martha even though he literally in text trying real hard to pull the wool in both ur qnd his own eyes is essentially him trying not to fuck himself.

donna is - in an almost wish-fufilled in what the dr missed from the master - considered an equal preestablished since season 3 guest appeared and fully in season 4. shes seen as a pea in the pod like the dr master rani and romana - keeping up with that specific lot of em without going thru the 'but im better than you' alien egoist rhetoric that the time lords fall to in times of upper handedness. she can manipulate she talk fast she tech-savvy yet people-grounded BUT she makes sure the respect isnt temporary and doesnt lord it over people because everyone is great and without that person, the whole system can fall apart.

its like fridging rose but worse. in s2-4 you made her in memory of someone else that ALWAYS treated her as an equal instead of actually continuing on with that with the next face. death wouldve been more forgiving and thats not a great thing to come to a conclusion to.
