I finally read the bionicle story bible and here's the most interesting things I noted from it (I might be forgetting a thing or two)

while the gba game and the cancelled pc game are brought up multiple times, mnog isn't, at least from what I can tell

nokama, nuju, kotu, hewkii, hafu, and jaller all have different names

the turaga were originally called the kahuna

the noble kanohi were called the mortal kanohi and the hau was one while the huna was a great kanohi (this is not a case of name change as the powers they each have are still the same as they are in the final version)

gali and kopaka are said to be twins, the same is also true for onua and pohatu

tahu and lewa are stated to be besties, while the main tension between the toa as a group comes from tahu and gali, rather than tahu and kopaka in the final story

the toa kaita's domains were swapped

the kanohi were considered masks of wisdom rather than of power

the toa's trials to get them were more intellectual and puzzle based

the turaga in general have different characterization than in the final story, some minor, some major

pohatu is described as "slow" and "sure footed" as opposed to the speedster we know

while not outright stated, the text implies that what will become ga koro was situated on an inland lake, rather than the coastal settlement it will become

likewise, onu koro is coastal and may or may not even be underground

rahi as a term does not seem to apply to all of the island's creatures, rather two specific guardian beasts under makuta, the rahi tori (who will become the muaka), and the rahi kahu (later just the kahu, an ally creature to the matoran)

the manas are considered even separate from that

the tarakava were originally conceived as "boxing gorillas" rather than semi-aquatic reptiles

makuta's final form is described as having three heads, a cobra, a tiger, and a hawk

And two big ones (at least for me)

takua is absolutely nowhere to be found in this document, not even a slight hint at their existence

mata nui awakening and being revealed to be a giant robot that they were all living on was originally only the first part of an even bigger plot twist, that being that Mata Nui was only one of six giant robots that had all crash landed on the planet, and that the other five were still out there, comatose in very different environments (obviously this was clearly meant to be a potential way to continue the story if it did well, as it's been known for some time that bionicle's original story was initially only meant to last for one year)

Overall it was a very intriguing read, interesting to see what changed and what remained the same

The user must describe in detail the power desired and at least one weakness. If the phrasing is spoken wrong, it causes intense psychic backlash in the user's mind. The user can use a programmed power for fifteen minutes (with a Great version), and after the time is out, the user must wait thirty seconds to activate the mask again. The Noble version will only work for five minutes. Another weakness is because it requires time and speech, any enemies nearby can hear in detail what power to expect and what its weakness is. Because of this, the usage of the mask is more commonly done alone. It is also capable of being programmed with the powers of other masks, such as the Kanohi Hau."

Do you ever think about how jarring it must have been, for the Turaga, to see the Matoran doing their work after the move to Mata Nui?

Like... Think about it. Metru Nui was a very, very rigid caste system. Everyone was made for a role, they'd fulfil that role, they wouldn't change from that role for thousands of years. And more pertinently, those roles were largely academic, borne of a highly developed civilisation. Then, you get to Mata Nui, and suddenly everything changed. Everyone just lost all of their memories, and with that a huge amount of their identities, and their previous roles with it. In fact, many of their roles are just outright nonexistent, in a world of stone and wood, with no city, with no Metrus, with nothing that the Turaga would have known. Indeed, Matau's first reaction to Mata Nui was "Where are the chutes?"!

Obviously, the Matoran could adapt - a blank slate can easily have anything imprinted onto it, after all, and they were made to work - but for the Turaga, who were watching their warped, diminished friends and kinsmen who sounded the same as before but acted perhaps very differently, and already had to suffer through the lie of concealing Metru Nui, it must have been bizarre in a way 'suffocating' couldn't possibly describe.

Imagine being Vakama, a craftsman among a city of crafters, who only ever made armour, being forced to see his fellow forgemates sharpen blades and call themselves a guard, a militia, an army, hunters and killers. Imagine much the same of Matau, who once spent his time driving new machines down clear tracks with his kin, now having to make do with tempermental Rahi in a twisting maze of branches and vines.

Imagine being Nokama or Nuju, who spent all their life prior as academics, pouring through tomes and staring at stars, watching as those untold millenia of knowledge simply disappear, to be replaced with hard physical chores like fishing or crafting or, indeed, fighting off Rahi. Imagine the same of Whenua, who once spent all his time studying creatures brought to him, now only providing the knowledge to make them go away, as the the scholars of all the Rahi life of the universe spend their days digging through the earth with pickaxes (not even drilling machines)!

Certainly, these are necessary roles, duties to be honoured and fulfilled to a a standard high enough to ensure continued life, but... In some ways, it must have been utterly humiliating. Sickening, even, to some.

Not to Onewa though. Pretty much nothing changed for him.

I never played much of it, but I distinctly remembered Hali being a weaver, creating thread from flax fibres; which, given the hindsight of Ga-Metru being a giant university/research centre, makes the role seem strangely small in comparison to her duties before. Of course, now she's a Toa, I suppose she doesn't have time much for either!

Did the Principles come from the Hordika?

Despite the extensive details about the Principles given in MNOG II, the fact that they only appear in that one game means there’s a lot about them that we don’t know, namely their origins. Were these beliefs that the Matoran held throughout their history, or are these beliefs that specifically emerged on the island of Mata Nui?

I think my favorite theory in regards to this is that the Principles came from the Turaga, who developed them based on their experiences as Toa and in particular, their experiences as Toa Hordika. Each of them struggled with the Hordika transformation in their own ways, ways that actually tie in nicely to the Principles and their enemies. Most of these characterizations of the Hordika can be found in the Challenge of the Hordika novel. 

Nokama very noticeably struggled with the feelings of corruption that the transformation brought, and how it caused the Great Temple to reject her, so it makes sense she would emphasize purity

Onewa began feeling very destructive, which contrasts with the Principle of Creation. His violent impulses also notably hampered his ability to think strategically, which is why he might’ve taught the Po-Matoran the skill of strategy.

Whenua very notably wanted to run off into the night and hunt, never having to deal with his responsibilities. This would mean abandoning his Duty and his Destiny, the virtues, Prosperity is based on, and his desire to hunt perhaps shows a dispensation with hunger. 

Nuju was most disturbed with the feelings of uncontrollable anger his transformation brought, and how it took all his willpower to keep his Rahi side in check, which could explain why he would emphasize Peace and Willpower. 

Matau struggled heavily with his feelings of hopelessness and despair. In addition, his harness towards Vakama during the arc contributed to the team fragmenting. His journey during the Hordika arc centered around rekindling his own Faith, and Vakama’s to bring him back and heal the team. 

And with Vakama, it can be argued that the root of his problems lie with his struggles with his fears and feelings of self doubt, that led him to first act too hesitantly, and then too brashly to overcompensate. What he needed was a more balanced view of Courage, and perhaps he taught that to the Ta-Matoran. 

Again, all the connection between their struggles and the Principles is just a headcanon of mine, but one I find very compelling due to how it connects their personal arcs to the cultures of their people.

"Uthja Y/n! Late ho rahi hai teri bus ane wali hai! JALDI UTH!"("Wake up Y/!! You're going to be late, your bus is about to come!! Wake u quickly!!") Your aunt screamed from the kitchen packing your lunch as you hurried out of your bed and quickly freshen up

Running down the stairs as you hurriedly ate your breakfast as your aunt scolds you "Itni late karti hai ye ladki! Ab mein nahi hongi ghar pe toh kaise samhale gi!" ("What should I do with this lazy girl! I'll be out of here how will you manage it?!")

"Sorry, Sorry." You apologized as you hug her and run off to take the bus.

As you arrived at your university, you glanced out the window and spied the same landscape; the same trees, road, same people, same rumors, and subjects.

Being bored with all this, you sighed and closed your eyes as the bus halted and your friend got on board and sat next to you.

"Aur bata kaisi hai?" ("So how are you?") She asked as you sighed and replied

"Kuch nahi bas neend a rahi hai"("Nothing just sleepy") You replied telling her the half-truth, it was true you were tried and sleepy but not because of the morning there was just nothing new to do it was all just waking up then go to university study for 8 hr and then get back home then study...It was just an endless loop of burden...You just wished for something interesting or a miracle to happen.

Going to university you saw the only thing you have probably not noticed all these years and thought,

'Koi naya mohala bana hai kya? Yaha kab se barigates lagne lage?' ('Is there a new collony setteling? There were never so many barigates here?')

Looking at the mysteriously abandoned road with a few buildings still in construction.

The day was just starting and you already felt drained out of boredom no one in your class came today all your friends were home and you just felt like an idiot for coming to university.

It was your game period as you decided to take a risky decision very learn you were going to bunk classes.

You packed your bag and walked out of the class when everyone was outside. You were never really in the limelight of the school so even if you go on a bunk no one would notice, it was the perfect time you had the keys to your home and some money to take a rikshaw or cab home.

Somehow you snuck out of university honestly the best thing you have ever done!! You were finally doing something new and you loved it, the excitement in you was growing as every second passed by. You were walking towards the main road when you found the same ally that was under construction. The classic shady ally that could be possessed. But, despite being scared, you followed your curiosity like the old saying goes, 'curiosity killed the cat'.

You walked towards the lonely ally as shivers ran down your spine looking at the chilly atmosphere. Looking around you saw a little glowing stone it almost looked like gold as you picked it up wanting to inspect it even more.

Big mistake, huge even. Bright lighting immersed you as you closed your eyes shut due to the bright light. You felt a weight on you as you fell to the ground. You open your eyes to look at what or rather who was over you as you find a young man of around age 17 over you. He had formal clothing on with bandages soaked in blood and mildly wavy, short, dark brown hair, and narrow dark brown eyes with one eye covered with a bandage.

This made you flustered as you pushed him back and scooted to the side. Waking the boy as he looked around him. Confused he mumbled something which you couldn't understand.

"Where am I?" He mumbled to himself as you let out "Huh?".

His attention then shifted towards you as he slowly stands and gives you a helping hand in standing up.

'D-Dazai! Dazai Osamu kaha se ya yaha pe! Mami sahi kaha rahi thi mein bahut sone lagi hu!! Mein pagal ho rahi sahi mein!!' ('D-Dazai! How is Dazai Osamu here? Aunt was correct I shouldn't sleep this much!! I'm going mad!!!') Wild thoughts ran through your mind as the chain was broken with a deep voice.

"Hello lady, Can you tell me where I am? I have no clue how I got here?" Dazai said in Japanese which you couldn't understand as your sweat dropped.

"Speak English?" You asked in short as Dazai sighed and replied in English

"My English not very good, sorry."

"Can you tell me where I am?" In broken in English as he asked as you immediately replied

"India, You are in India."

"India? How..."

"I don't know..." You looked at him as you saw his arm bleeding soaking his sleeve and bandages

"He bhagwan! Your arm is bleeding! Let's get you to the hospital...Are nahi voh bhi nahi kar sakte mere pas na toh id hai na hi mein iski koi Id proof de sakti hu..." ("Oh no can't do that either, I don't have my Id or his Id or documentation.")

You were just mumbling to yourself as you saw Dazai just questioning your behavior making you think he was judging you as you shuffled and quickly turned towards him and gestured towards him.

"Will you come with me?" You asked him slowly making sure he got what you meant as he just nodded.

As you both took off towards your home taking the fasted transport in India the rickshaw.

You both were silent thinking random thoughts and looking outside.

Dazai's mind was raised with so many questions.

'How am I here? This is so different from anything back home...People have no abilities...How can get out? I guess let's just follow this girl till I'm able to find a way back home....'

While you had your questions 'How is he here? I'm sure Dazai Osamu was either supposed to be dead or just in anime...How am I going to explain this to my Aunt...What am I going to do...Let's just get his injuries fixed first...'

But both of you had the same question in mind...

'Will I/he be able to go back?'

You two arrived home you quickly went to get your phone looked for a Japanese translator and typed as the translator spoke

"Please make yourself at home...I will get the first aid kit for your wounds." It said as Dazai shook his head making you tilt your head as he spoke in the app in Japanese.

"No need to worry it's fine." He said as you shook your head violently writing as the AI spoke

"Please, it's the least I can do, If you are not comfortable I'll leave to get you some comfortable clothes and leave the first aid here for you to use it and the bathroom open for you to shower."

Dazai listened and sighed as he nodded.

When you left to get him clothes he looked around the house finding your pictures in your room as well as many thick books university labeled by your name and placed in a column you named "b.tech college books".

He freshened up as he was thinking of the possibilities of what caused this problem. He came out of the bathroom patching his wounds as he wrapped a towel around his waist. Hearing the sound of clicking the door as you entered your apartment.

"Vaise toh iske kafi fayde bhi hai at least mujhe bore toh nahi hona padega akele vaise hi ab Mami mere sath rahengi nahi." ("Well, this is also great at least I won't be lonely when aunt won't be living with me") You mumbled as you entered the room and looked at Dazai who only had a towel on as bandages wrapped around his chest. You owlishly dropped the bad as heat rose to your cheeks as you slammed the door blushing.

"Here are the clothes!! Please make yourself at home!!" You screamed from outside.

"Eh?"

Both of you were now sitting at the dining table as you had made some sandwiches for Dazai forcing him to eat since he refused to do so.

The silence was thinking as you took your phone and typed as the AI spoke again.

"Do you know how you got here?"

Dazai shook his head saying no. as he spoke in the microphone.

"No but I do know what is happening, I looked around and found that I have time-traveled or something like that. My name is Dazai Osamu. I'm from Japan though I think this was a doing of an ability user but...how did his ability work on me? So! It's out of my head! Since I have no place to go will a lovely lady like yourself commit a double suicide with me?" He asked holding her hand as she violently shook her head.

"No, How about I teach some of the native languages here since you don't know when you'll be going or if you'll be going back. So at least you would know how to communicate with people and for the place well you can live with me. How does that sound?" The AI was interpreted as offering the boy your help.

"Will he be able to back? Will you tell him that he is not a real human? That he is just fictional? That all his pain and suffering is just meant for entertainment...Or will you take advantage of this to cure your loneliness and boredom...Will this decision chage the anything?"

Alright, only one group left to look at (kinda), its time for the arthropod extravaganza

Out of every group of animal, it is by far arthropods with the most rahi representation

We got four main subgroups to look at so lets go over them

The myriapods (centipedes and millipedes) only have one maybe rep in the form of the terrain crawler, which for some reason was canonized as a rahi despite all promo and story material clearly not having that be the intention

As arachnids go, the mu is chockfull of spiders and scorpions, many of them very large. For spiders you have the the chute lurker, the dagger spider, the electric spider, the Fenrakk, the Fikou, the Fikou-Nui, the sea spider, the silver chute spider, and all seven breeds of Visorak. Then for scorpions you have the catapult scorpion, the Kofo-Jaga, the Nui-Jaga, the Zivon, and the scorpion rahi from the cancelled pc game. Interestingly, a uniting factor across all arachnid rahi is that they are immensely bigger than the largest of their real life counterparts, to the point where event he smallest ones are as big as the largest real life ones.

Onto insects, there are also quite a lot, several of which aren't given much elaboration on what specific type of insect they are: like the cliff bug, the colony drone (which technically isn't outright stated to be an insect but from context clues and also the name, kind of has to be), the electric bug, the fireflyer, the lava crawler, and the night creeper (which again, while also not outright stated to be one, is probably an insect due to context clues)

As for specifics, the acid fly is well, a fly. The frost beetle and Hoto are both stated to be beetles, the Kirikori Nui is a grasshopper/locust, the metallic hornet is a hornet, the metru mantis is a mantis, context clues imply the Niazesk is a gadfly of some kind, similarly context clues imply the sand snipe is a gnat, the Nui Kopen is a wasp, I think the tunnel stalker might be an earwig, and the Nui Rama is a bit of a cluster fuck, as it's been referred to as a fly or a mosquito by different media, and they also have the eusociality and hive-building like bees or wasps, so I think they're another one for the specevo pile

Lastly, the crustaceans, all of which are crabs: The Hahnah, the Keras, the Mana-ko, the Manas, the spider crab, the crab rahi from the cancelled pc game, and the ever-lovable Usaal

Despite there being so many arthropod rahi, a number of groups are left out, other types of crustaceans, arachnids that aren't spiders or scorpions, and numerous rather recognizable insect groups like ants, butterflies, moths, roaches, dragonflies, a lot of different beetles, termites, stick insects, and cicadas

And again, a interesting unifying factor among all of them, barring some insects, is how overall larger they are than their real-life counterparts

And with that where done, we've gone over basically every animal group

But there's still some cleaning up to do

More humanized Bionicle stuff because I left a few things out of my first post and I have a few thoughts to share

I went into detail about how Vakama looks, i.e. hair and eye color, but I never did that with the other Toa:

Nokama is the second tallest after Nuju. She doesn't wear heels, it's all natural. Her long is dark, enough for it to shine blue in the sun. Also following her OG set design, her eyes are an orange-amber color.

Since Matau can't exactly grow his hair out, he dyes it and his natural roots grew when he was given the Toa Stone by Lhikan. His hair is also a constant mess because he has helmet hair. People are surprised to see his red eyes, but Matau says it adds to his charm.

Onewa either has light brown hair or dark blond hair that he ties back in a ponytail. Has the most riveting blue eyes in the team and he uses that to his advantage so that he wins in a staring contest against Matau(because I firmly believe that he's bi and a disaster sometimes)

Nuju is the tallest. He knows it. Despite sometime spent in the sun, Nuju is a little pale. Actually, he's VERY pale. His hair is white as snow and his eyes are such a pale blue they might was well be white. He doesn't smile a lot and it shows because he doesn't have any smile lines on his face.

Whenua is the shortest in the group, but don't be fooled. He is still a tank, he is a walking Boulder. The man is nearly solid muscle. His hair is basically an undercut with the top being box braided and he has to untie the braids and retie them when he bathes or showers. He's got very green eyes like Vakama, but his are slightly more vibrant. And they're like a cat's in that they glow in the dark, which the others know from first-hand experience because they've either awoken to seeing Whenua's eyes only or they looked at Whenua at the right angle when it was dark.

With descriptions out of the way, time for shenanigans!

In an arm wrestling contest, for fun and games, Whenua, oddly enough, won against the other Toa. Matau and Onewa wanted a rematch, but Whenua, to pull their legs, told them not to hurt themselves and wait until later

Vakama and Whenua need to be reminded to go to bed because they're both used to staying up late

Nokama 100% does yoga. The others have tried it and Nuju, Whenua, and Vakama do partake in doing it. Onewa and Matau tried, but Matau cannot do it for long because he prefers more active activities. Onewa just doesn't have the best balance

Vakama and Whenua occasionally braid each other's hair, though really it's a "them" thing that developed because Whenua got just out of the bath and asked Vakama for help rebraiding his hair. As they were braiding, Vakama asked if the braids mean anything, like if each braid is a number of rahi or bit of information in the archives or if each braid is a year Whenua worked in the archives, but Whenua just admits he has them because it gives his hands something to do and he doesn't get any wispy hair in his face. When asked about his own braids, Vakama admitted they were from a friend and he held onto them for sentimental reasons. He totally expected to be picked on for it, but Whenua only told him he was lucky and, as a half joke, asked Vakama if he'll have more braids as he worked with the other Toa Metru. Vakama was indecisive, as that would mean growing more hair and braiding it, but he wouldn't object to it

When their boots get damaged, Onewa looks for new boots while Vakama just fixes his, and it shows because he has had to repleace the string of his boot, had to sew a hole shut, had to fix the sole, and put some new metal in the toe when the old metal gave

Vakama doesn't smoke, I don't imagine any of the Toa Metru smoking, but if Vakama did smoke, he'd essentially use his thumb as a lighter. If anyone's getting cheeky or smart with him, he'd flip them off as he lights a smoke. Well, anyone but Nokama, who would be on his back about stopping because he's not helping himself by doing it and his lungs/filters are already gross from breathing smoke and fumes all day, so why is he making it worse?

Matau is 100% someone who would walk up to one of the other Toa Metru and say, "Pay attention to me." Very cat-like behavior, but the guy wants love

Vakama doesn't fully remember getting his scar from the Vahki. The others asked what he did, but he legitimately has no idea

Something that's absolutely a thing between the two of them: Matau will lay right on top of Vakama or lay by him, what have you. It's a win-win thing for them both; Matau gets really warm, and Vakama gets a comfortable weight on him to calm him down

Because I have cats, how they'd do with a cat: Whenua would let it chill on his shoulders, Nokama would have a new best friend and the cat essentially becomes her animal companion, Matau is shape-shifting into another cat and playing with it, Onewa is the guy who didn't want the cat but falls in love anyway, Nuju is indifferent about it, and Vakama is very, "What do I do?" towards it because it honks at him whenever he's making masks to calm down and lays on him because he is a living furnace

This is just in general, but their eyes change color when their 'mask powers' are activated. Nokama's eyes glow blue, Vakama's glow red, Nuju's glow white, et cetera. Whenua's just more of a lead-y silver, but still
