Yay!! My Bestie @ouidamforeman tagged me in a fun little AO3 game and I'm still crying about their post and how niceys they were to me in it <3
We've been collaborators on so many projects for so long now that it almost feels like we're a package deal at this point xD (and i love it <3)
1. how many works do you have on Ao3?
177
This isn't counting, I don't think at least, the five or six that I've orphaned over the last year.
2. what’s your total Ao3 word count?
642,686 <3
3. what fandoms do you write for?
Good Omens is by far my largest fandom lol. I have a long abandoned series that's a rewrite of Fallout 4, but no idea if I'll ever get back to it.
4. what are your top five fics by kudos?
They're all fairly older ones that have been kicking around AO3 for a while <3
well then, ask me to stay (904)
unpath'd waters, undream'd shores (643)
And now I'm ready to feel your hand (545)
Hush, darling...I've got you (532)
All the Idle Weeds That Grow (519)
5. do you respond to comments?
I love to respond to comments! Often they get away from me and I won't for a long chunk of time, and then inevitably the ADHD hyperfixation will kick in and I will answer some 60-120 comments in one go because I let them sit for far too long sometimes xD
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Gonna have to go back old school for this one, I think it would have to be Hopelessly, I'll Love You Endlessly, simply because it implies that Crowley is going to the bar to drink himself into a stupor after Aziraphale's discorporation as a form of suicide. Honorable mention for What good would common sense for it do? which has the two of them spending the night together after Crowley has a mental breakdown about the Spanish Inquisition, which ends with him leaving at the end because he doesn't think he's worth what Aziraphale clearly sees in him. As well as, as Ouida mentioned, I think about you, which ends with Crowley in a very distressed state after masturbating in the shower.
I think... I like torturing that old man. Oh well.
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
Oh there's so many of those I might as well list my five favorite happy ending fics:
It's Not the Years, It's the Mileage - My fusion that puts Aziraphale and Crowley in the place of Indy and Marion during Raiders of the Lost Ark. It ends with them proclaiming their love and continuing their mildly illicit affair and lots and lots of kisses.
I won't have a life (until you're dead) - My first big long project with @ouidamforeman will always have a special place in my heart for happy endings. These two found each other despite all of the odds, and now they have eternity together!
Night of the Living Boyfriend! - Me and @ouidamforeman's 70s horror pastiche which I don't think anyone realized would have a happy ending. We certainly jumped through hoops to get there, but it got there all the same.
go where I go, do what I must - This one is going to be a series of interconnected one-shots in the same world but really... Poor little repressed Victorian man deciding to kill himself rather than get married to a woman he doesn't love by sacrificing him to the fae, only to become married to one of them instead? And then get to take part in their bacchanalian cultural customs? AND eventually get to have an orgy with two big Satyr fellas while his husband claps and squeals gleefully? He's living his best happy ending ever!
formation displays of affection - The android fic... oh my beloved android fic. I wrote this one specifically as a vehicle for Ouida to express some of their feelings and thoughts around their autism, and it ends so hopeful and happy and full of love to bursting.
8. Do you get hate on fics?
I have only gotten hate twice. The first time was on a zine fic once it was published, someone saying that I was a hack and that my writing style was shit so I shouldn't get into zines. They bragged about it in a few discord servers, I've had them blocked since. The big one, as Ouida mentioned in their post, was on formation displays of affection, where apparently we are abelist against ourselves? For writing our experiences? Because the character is a robot. Whack as hell if you ask me.
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Oh please honey, you know what blog you're on xD
All kinds of smut every configuration. Solo, couples, orgies... heavy kink, monster fucking. Always unapologetically queer and joyous. A few of my most Out There smut fics for your consideration (the first two are both collabs with Ouida!):
En Eski Aşk Şiiri - Vore sex. It's vore sex! Devour your angel husband for fun and profit!
The Nature of Intricate Rituals - Are they animals? Yes, strictly speaking. Reverse Omens where Crowley is a harpy and Aziraphale is a sphinx and they fuck good and Gadriel (Crowley) lays a lot of eggs and also comes about that.
In The Depths - Dubious consent wherein mech pilot Aziraphale gets fucked via that neural interface by a sea monster. Said sea monster comes back for more in a more compact, human looking form, but he still doesn't quite grasp the limitations of human bodies.
Five Sparrows for a Penny - Five Aziraphale clones give Crowley the ride of his life.
10. Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
I've only written one crossover, and that was The Curious Case of Old Mr. Fell, where Basil of Baker Street and Dr Dawson from The Great Mouse Detective meet Aziraphale.
Fusions though, I have It's Not The Years, It's The Mileage as mentioned above, as well as the group project Reclamation and Reconnaissance which is an au set on Bajor during the events of Deep Space Nine, but with Good Omens characters.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I'm aware of.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Several times! Mainly into Russian, once into French and Italian I think.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
The majority of my writing is co-written. Me and Ouida are a great team <3
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
Aziraphale and Crowley, hands down.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
My Fallout 4 rewrites. I just don't have the hyperfixation energy to work on them anymore.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I"m pretty good with dialogue and with scene details without them being overbearing. Ambience and mood as well.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I am not good at long form fiction, writing multichapter fics is a struggle for me because I struggle with plot of all things. I'm much more a one-shot person. However, part of the benefit of working with Ouida so much, is that they balance me out and are very good at hammering down worldbuilding and plot points. Also they beta everything I write!
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I haven't done it myself yet, but I feel like it's so cool to do! If I can ever get it off the ground, eventually me and Ouida have a cold war spies concept that we're working on and Aziraphale will speak Russian in it a lot of the time.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Teen Titans. Not GO!, the original one.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
God I've written so many it's hard to pick, but I definitely have to say that it's I won't have a life (until you're dead). It will always be that one, forever and ever. That's why I haven't ever changed my profile picture xD
I'm gonna tag uhhhh @ashfae, @entanglednow, @charlottemadison42, and @waldosakimbo

Fanfic Year In Review
Tagged by the ever-wonderful @glaciya! Thank you darling!!
How many works do you have on ao3?
43 - 14 this year!
What’s your total ao3 word count?
239,139 - 126,535 this year!
How many fandoms have you written for and what are they?
Uh, 1 lol. Basically just Batfam (Batman - All Media Types) with a handful of sub fandoms within haha
Are there any new fandoms you want to write for?
I may or may not have 20k of a Shadow and Bone remake languishing in my WIP folder... Maybe.... We’ll have to see if it ever comes to light! XD
What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
Operation Tim
Operation Tia
Day By Day
Redfish
The Feeling of Safety
Which of your fics do you want more attention for?
None! I’m honestly constantly blown away by the attention I’ve already gotten!
Do you respond to comments, why or why not?
Always! Have yet to have any haters (I’m sure they’re coming, and I’ve already started drafting ways to leave a snarky reply before freezing the thread lol) but I really love chatting with people and appreciate them putting in the extra effort, even if it’s just a keyboard smash or a string of emojis!
What sorts of things do you normally write?
Angst, fluff, and lots and lots of AUs!! I look fondly at canon, pick up my favorite characters to hug close, and toss the rest out the window. It’s very freeing lol
What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?
Mmm, probably Shadow of Death? I am particularly fond of happy endings, so this one is more of an open ending than anything else, but it definitely leaves people hanging a little ;)
What’s a fic that pushed you out of your comfort zone?
A Series of Moments was probably the closest I’ve ever come to truly writing dark fic, and it definitely made me stretch my muse, even knowing the happy ending had already been written. I think it turned out very well though!
Do you write crossovers? What’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Not... really? The only one I have posted on AO3 is my Batman/Big Hero 6 fusion that really only involved Baymax (Human Pinatas and Robot Doctors) but I have a fairly extensive DC/Star Wars crossover that I worked on quite a bit in my youth! Never finished it, and it’s horribly self-indulgent, but it was fun at the time and was technically my first fanfic!
Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! Just this year, in fact. It was such a huge compliment to be asked!
Have you ever co-written a fic before?
I have! Secret Caverns: Raider of the Lost Ark was my very first dip in the pool of round robin-ing through Discord, and Inky made it so much fun! And the afore mentioned Shadow of Death was written with @luthienluinwe and had some truly fantastic imagery! Currently, I’m working on what has turned into a massive story with @workingchemistry and it’s been SO fun! It’s solidly over 100k now, but we probably need a beginning before we can start posting... And some editing. So. Much. Editing. 😂
What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?
Well, I’m definitely not ever finishing that DC/Star Wars AU lol, but I hold out hope that some of my others (JayTim Vikings, Serial Killer!Tim, etc) will eventually get finished. It’s mostly a matter of limited Time and Energy haha
What are you currently working on?
The Playmating AU with Chem, the last few chapters of How to Start Living, the sequel to Honest Men, Secret Project That I Shall Not Name, and Oy! What a Knight. I’ve also still got some prompts that I’m working on, but they’ve been chilling on the back burner until I can get some of my other projects wrapped up!
What are your writing strengths?
~Worldbuilding~ (to the surprise of no one lol)
What are your writing weaknesses?
Editing 100%, but I’ve been blessed with some amazing betas haha
What was the first fandom you wrote for? Most recent?
Young Justice (that crossover I mentioned) was my first, now it’s a general mishmash of Batfam shipping, but primarily JayTim and JayDick!
What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?
Lord, asking the hard questions, aren’t ya? Hmm.... It’s really got to be Honest Men. That fic (which is now actually a trilogy with three separate arcs, only the first of which is totally done) is one that I started before I posted anything else, and there’s so many layers to it that I’m really excited to see people’s reactions once things start to unravel. I even have a motif worked into it!
What fic are you most proud of?
All of them!
I’ll try not to double tag, but I apologize in advance cuz I know this has been going around! @workingchemistry (who already beat me to it lol), @elareine, @generatorcat , and anyone else who wants to join in the fun!!

Are there any movie fusion fics? Thank you, bud.
Reply: Surely there are, my dude! To be clear, a fusion takes the plot of another story and inserts the characters from Sherlock, for example, in the main roles. As opposed to a crossover which might put the Sherlock characters in Star Fleet, for instance, alongside Spock, Kirk, etc. without taking over their roles.
Also, you asked specifically for movie fusions, so I have tried only to include fics where the fusion universe is best known as a movie, although there may also be a book that preceded it (such as Call Me By Your Name and Brokeback Mountain). I have excluded all fusions with popular books that were later made into movies (such as the Harry Potter series and various Jane Austen stories).

Timestamp #208: Dreamland
New Post has been published on https://esonetwork.com/timestamp-208-dreamland/
Timestamp #208: Dreamland
Doctor Who: Dreamland (Animated Special, 2009)
“Always count your steps, Seruba Velak. You never know when you might need to escape in a box.”
One ship is pursued across the sky by two others. In a hail of laser fire, it crashes into the New Mexico desert, outside Roswell, on June 13, 1947.
Eleven years later, the Doctor arrives at a diner in Dry Springs, Nevada. He meets Cassie Rice, a customer named Jimmy, and a mysterious artifact that lights up under sonic screwdriver. While Cassie and Jimmy marvel over the technology, a man in a black suit arrives and demands it. He assaults them for it, and they make haste for the ranch where Jimmy works.
When they arrive, they find a large Viperox battle drone which has been eating the cattle. A helicopter arrives with soldiers on board, and after they blow up the Viperox, they tell the Doctor that he’s wanted at Area 51.
Also known as Dreamland.
Accompanied by Jimmy and Cassie, the Doctor is taken below ground to meet Colonel Stark. He tells them that he plans to wipe their minds, straps them to some operating tables, taunts them for a few minutes, and turns on the amnesia gas. The Doctor wriggles free, turns off the gas, and helps his companions escape through the ventilation shafts.
As alarms echo through the facility, the trio takes flight, ending up in Lab 51. Inside the lab, they discover an alien behind a glass partition. Force to run again, the team takes a lift to a hangar where they are immediately captured.
The Doctor’s entourage are shepherded toward the alien craft that crashed in Roswell. Using his sonic screwdriver, the Doctor hijacks the ship and takes it for a spin. Pursued by Air Force fighters, he crashes the ship in the desert. They take refuge in a ghost town called Solitude.
Meanwhile, Colonel Stark is confronted by a Viperox named Lord Azlok, demanding that he not disappoint the Viperox forces. Azlok is also very interested in the Doctor and his skills.
The Doctor and his companions find a Viperox that pulls Jimmy underground. Lord Azlok interrogates Jimmy and meets the Doctor, whom he pegs as an alien because of his two heartbeats. Cassie frees Jimmy and stages a diversion, and although the Doctor is upset that he didn’t figure out the master plan, they discover it soon enough. Lord Azlok brought the Viperox Queen to Earth, and she’s laying eggs Aliens-style to hatch an invasion force.
The trio runs again, this time taking an Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom mining cart ride into the blinding desert. There, they meet four men in black suits. The head Man in Black, Mr. Dread, demands the the ionic fusion bar from the diner. When the Doctor stalls, the MiBs reveal themselves as robots. They are saved by Jimmy’s grandfather, Night Eagle, and a hail of arrows.
Night Eagle reveals that he found another of the gray aliens from the crashed ship and kept him safe. Rivesh Mantilax wants to go home, but first he needs to find Seruba Velak, his wife and the alien in the base. His wife was an ambassador who was trying to build an alliance against the Viperox, but was attacked by hired mercenaries.
Colonel Stark arrives and takes everyone into custody. Back at Area 51, the Doctor discovers that Stark has allied with Azlok. They watch as the gray aliens are reunited, then discuss how Rivesh was developing a genetic weapon to destroy the Viperox. Joined by Mr. Dread, Stark reveals his plan to use the ionic fusion bar as a weapon to destroy the Soviet Union.
The Doctor uses his sonic screwdriver to disable Mr. Dread, then runs to the roof with the alien weapon. On the edge of the roof, held at gunpoint by Stark, the Doctor pleads for the colonel’s help. Stark listens to reason, but his plan to arrest Azlok is interrupted by the Viperox leader himself and the promise to tear Earth to shreds.
Down below, Cassie finds Rivesh has been critically injured by Azlok. Once freed, Seruba says that she can save her husband, but only with her ship. Stark takes the group to the Area 51 Vault where all of the ship’s contents were stored in the final scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark. While the Doctor and Seruba start searching, he sends Cassie and Jimmy to retrieve the TARDIS.
As the sun sets, the Viperox emerge from the desert and start their rampage while Seruba finds the component and the Doctor finds a swarm of hungry Skorpius Flies.
Stark deploys his army against the Viperox while Seruba and the Doctor play hide-and-go-seek with the flies. The army is no match for the invasion, and as Stark’s operations center is overrun by Azlok, the Doctor is reunited with the TARDIS. Jimmy, Cassie, and Seruba step aboard and they travel to Rivesh’s side. Once Rivesh is revived, the Doctor asks him to activate the device but to stop before destroying the Viperox. The Doctor connects the device into the TARDIS console and it broadcasts a signal that drives the Viperox off the planet entirely.
The Doctor let them live because, one day, they are destined to evolve into something better.
The Doctor entrusts the device to Colonel Stark for the protection of Earth. They bid farewell to Seruba and Rivesh, and the Doctor takes off as Cassie and Jimmy hold hands.
Admittedly, it is a function of its form, but this story moved like a squirrel binging energy drinks. This piece was originally planned as seven six-minute episodes for the BBC’s Red Button service. As a result, we got a story that has a plot climax every five or six minutes.
It was kind of tiring.
I could point out the technical inaccuracies, but the fact that this was a cartoon developed for a charity event gives the writers a considerable amount of grace in my eyes. Some of the errors are animation shortcuts, others concern United States history, but overall they are inconsequential to the plot on the whole.
So, I’ll revel in the character and cast lists.
Like, the return of Georgia Moffett – daughter of Peter Davison and wife of David Tennant – who we last heard (and saw) in The Doctor’s Daughter and who I really enjoy seeing/hearing on the show.
Or Lisa Bowerman as Seruba Velak. Big Finish fans know Lisa Bowerman as Bernice Summerfield, and classic era fans might remember her as Karra from Survival.
Or the first Native American companion (however briefly) in Doctor Who, Jimmy Stalkingwolf, portrayed by Canadian born English actor and singer Tim Howar. It would have been nice to a Native American actor in either this role or Night Eagle’s role, but I’ll take this advancement as progress. I mean, we’ve come quite the distance from An Unearthly Child when the First Doctor referred to “Red Indians” as having “savage minds”.
Or… How about Doctor Who getting David Warner as Lord Azlok. Emmy-award winning film, television, and theatre actor David Warner from The Omen, Time After Time, Time Bandits, Tron, Titanic, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and so much more.
I mean… wow. Just, wow.
Of course, we first heard of Dreamland from Prisoner of the Judoon, which is where we first saw the ship designs seen in this tale. We get plenty of continuity from the Doctor abhorring salutes (previously The Sontaran Stratagem and Planet of the Dead) and outright despising the nickname “Doc” (referencing The Time Meddler, The Five Doctors, The Twin Dilemma, The Ultimate Foe, and more I’m sure).
I also enjoyed seeing Doctor Who outright embrace the Roswell mythos, from the “grays” of typical close encounter accounts to the legendary Men in Black.
Production-wise, this marked the first six-part story on television since The Armageddon Factor and the first six-part story produced since Shada, which was finally completed in 2017 (but not yet reviewed in that form by this humble Whovian… although there’s always hope).
But, all of that awesomeness considered, I keep coming back to that over-caffeinated squirrel of story pacing. Like I said, it was tiring, and it really pulled me away from the adventure because I was trying to keep up with what was going on with otherwise thinly developed characters.
And that is truly a shame for a tale with so many other groundbreaking elements.
Rating: 3/5 – “Reverse the polarity of the neutron flow.
UP NEXT – Doctor Who: The End of Time
The Timestamps Project is an adventure through the televised universe of Doctor Who, story by story, from the beginning of the franchise. For more reviews like this one, please visit the project’s page at Creative Criticality.

WIP Wednesday
Hello friends <3 It's WIP Wednesday and I have something that has been a long time coming.
I am FINALLY working on a sequel to It's Not The Years, It's The Mileage (my fusion between Good Omens and Raiders of the Lost Ark).
This one will be based on The Last Crusade, and feature Aziraphale and Crowley in many shenanigans that stem from Gabriel showing up for Aziraphale's bicentennial performance review.
Will Aziraphale be able to influence Doctor Elsa Schneider on behalf of Heaven and find the Holy Grail? Are Gabriel's motives really to be trusted? How is Crowley finding a work/life balance between his time with the SIS and lounging about in Aziraphale's office?
All these and more will be answered in Pilgrims in an Unholy Land (coming soon to an AO3 near you*!)
*Popcorn and floor-splitting Diet Coke not included (if you know you know)
And now! A little teaser trailer for you all:
Oxford University, 1938 “The thing that all of you must remember, if you take nothing else away from my class,” Aziraphale said, peering out at the students of his lecture hall over the thin gold rims of his glasses, “take away this one simple lesson.” Turning to the board, he scrawled out four simple letters. F-A-C-T, appearing on the board in a puff of chalk dust. “Fact. Archaeology is not the pursuit of truths, but of fact.” He adjusted his bowtie as he turned back to face his classroom. “But, if you did want to know more about truth, I’m sure Professor Ward’s philosophy class down the hall would suffice.” He smiled as a murmur of laughter passed through his students. Professor Ward was a fair shake, but his class was solidly the philosophy of religion. He hadn’t the heart to tell the man that his philosophies were quite a bit off base. After all, Aziraphale would know. But he’d also never offered himself as a source. “Now then, that will conclude class for today. Now we don’t have time to dawdle!” He shouted over the commotion of students rushing to leave. “I’ll expect everyone to be well read on our textbook, chapters 5 and 6, Egyptology and specifically a focus on Seti the first! We’ll be discussing the findings around him first thing in class. I’ll be in my office for further questions, only for the next hour and a half or so!”  Aziraphale shook his head as the students crowded past his desk, chuckling under his breath. He was getting used to it, the whole professor thing. Teaching was something, oddly enough, he had turned out to be pretty good at. He found it funny how time worked, like it had a sense of humor. Charged with keeping humanity away from knowledge in the Beginning, and now willingly giving it to the next generation. It was a nice symmetry, in his mind anyway. He gathered up his papers, neatly stacking them before slipping them into his briefcase. It would be nice to have a quiet evening, maybe have a glass or two of wine. As he made his way to his office, he thought about putting on a nice soothing record or two. As much as he enjoyed the chaos of collegiate life, it was nice to escape it as well. There was a spring in his step as he turned the handle of his office door. At least, until he made it to the other side. “Professor Fell, I needed to ask–” “–Sir, if you don’t mind, that letter of recom–” “–and there still isn’t a grade posted, it’s been two weeks–” A horde of students mobbed him at once, shouting questions one right after the other. He could hear his secretary behind them, saying something about scheduling and unexpected visitors. He always did forget to do his paperwork. Or answer his messages. Or his letters. “All in due time, all in due time!” He tried to be both loud and calm, feeling much like he was failing at both. He waved to his secretary, shouting instructions to her. “If you would please, take down names and issues, give me that list and I will see to it that I speak to each one of you in turn.” As he spoke he inched his way through the throng of people, closer to his inner office door and to what he hoped was freedom. Maybe he could sneak out the window. “Now, if you will excuse me – “ “–sir, the man in your office, he –” His secretary tried to shout over everyone else. “ – If you’ll excuse me.” He turned the doorknob, hurrying in and locking it behind him. He leaned against the frosted glass and took a deep breath. “Hello, Aziraphale!” Aziraphale did a double-take and the source of the overly cheery voice. Someone he hadn’t seen in over a century. Not since he had tried to drag him back to heaven with a commendation and a pat on the back. “Gabriel? What are you doing here?”

For the week of 18 December 2017
Quick Bits:
Accell #6 concludes Danny’s first confrontation with new villain Midnight Blue and it’s interesting to see him still navigating how to be a hero, in this case ultimately failing. Damion Scott’s art is easily worth the price of admission alone.

Angelic #4 really starts getting into the happenings behind the scenes and the truth of what humans did before disappearing from the face of the Earth. It also shows that both the monks and the mans have been perpetuating their own ideologies and systems of belief to retain their own power structures. Not surprising, but like Orwell’s Animal Farm it’s a good way to show us some of our own failings through analogy.

Assassinistas #1 isn’t exactly what I was expecting, but this is better. For whatever reason, I was expecting madcap female assassin action a la Kill Bill. That element is present, but this is really an interesting, humorous, and heartfelt look at three women who were assassins, who have moved on with their lives to create families and different situations. It’s about what happens after the usual exploitation movie, and it’s wonderful. Tini Howard has created some believable and interesting characters that are perfectly suited to Gilbert Hernandez bringing them to life.

Backways #1 is off to a good start. Anna’s girlfriend Sylvia goes missing amidst dabbling with magic and the occult, leading to Anna’s quest to find out what happened to her. Justin Jordan and Eleonora Carlini create some interesting characters and setting here, with some great art by Carlini.

Betty & Veronica: Vixens #2 gets us into the recruitment phase of the gang. I like the two narratives that Jamie Lee Rotante is providing, one of the current day gang and one of their formation. The art from Eva Cabrera fits this story perfectly.

Dark Ark #4 gives us the battle between Nex’s vampires and the rest of the ark. It’s not pretty. The art by Juan Doe, though, is glorious.

Deadpool vs. Old Man Logan #3 manages to make Wade and Logan feel like an old married couple. It’s hilarious.

Evolution #2 makes me sad that this isn’t weekly or released in huge chunks. The story from James Asmus, Joe Keatinge, Christopher Sebela, and Joshua Williamson is great, with each group of characters having their own unique point of view to give a broader picture of the coming epidemic. But the real star remains Joe Infurnari, whose art just pulls the whole thing together and elevates it to what’s looking like a horror masterpiece.

The Family Trade #3 sends Jessa on the run as the intrigue amongst the Family and the Clans begin to reach a boiling point. Morgan Beem’s art again makes this one of the most unique looking books on the shelves, very well done.

Hellboy: Krampusnacht is a beautiful one-shot illustrated by Adam Hughes showcasing Hellboy vs. Krampus. It’s a fun take on the folklore, changing it up to more suit Hellboy’s world.

Jim Henson’s The Storyteller: Fairies #1 kicks off a new anthology mini series with Matt Smith’s interpretation of the Icelandic fairy tale, “The Elf Queen and the Shepherd”. It’s a good story, with a bit of humour about talkative birds, and Smith’s art is beautiful.

Joe Golem: Occult Detective #4: Flesh & Blood #1 starts off a new two-parter with an interesting mystery of either a haunted house or a possessed woman or possibly both. Although the stories by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden are good, the main draw for this series for me has been Patric Reynolds’ depictions of the Drowning City. New York City recast as a derelict Venice just has something inherently right about it and Reynolds continuously nails the visuals.

Kong on the Planet of the Apes #2 continues to feel like a seamless fusion between the two properties. The artwork from Carlos Magno is wonderful as expected, and I really like how Ryan Ferrier has incorporated some of the tropes of Kong stories, even briefly in the explorer’s notes as narration at the beginning of this issue.

Made Men #4 makes a bit of a mess of their operation regarding the captain who ordered the hit on Jutte and her squad. There are some great comedy moments again this issue with Hadry continuing to adjust to the changes in society. Month in, month out, Paul Tobin and Arjuna Susini continue to make this one of my favourite books on the shelves.

Marvel Two-in-One #1 finally gets around to dealing with the aftermath of Secret Wars and the disappearance of Reed and Sue. Chip Zdarsky and Jim Cheung manage to create something mournful and beautiful here.

Optimus Prime #14 closes out the “Dead Come Home” arc with more gorgeous artwork from Livio Ramondelli. It’s also interesting as to how many threads John Barber is weaving from to craft this story. There’s bits from various Spotlight issues, the Dinobots trilogy, the recent Shining Armor mini, the First Strike crossover, and more, yet it never seems confusing or busy.

Redlands #5 is probably the darkest issue to date. While it focuses a bit on Bridget’s history, with Zuzu and with darker entities further back in time, it also dives deep into different narratives of abuse, “ownership”, and forced prostitution.

ROM and the Micronauts #1 spins out of the First Strike crossover, but there’s not much continuity there that isn’t repeated in the first couple of pages. The rest of the book is heavier on the previous ROM series continuity, but it shouldn’t really serve as an impediment. Basically, ROM and the Micronauts team up to take on the combined forces of the Dire Wraiths and Baron Karza, then everything goes to hell. Christos Gage sets up an interesting predicament for the heroes and a compelling reason for them to continue together. Paolo Villanelli again proves adept at just about everything the Hasbroverse can throw at him artistically.

Sherlock Frankenstein & The Legion of Evil #3 is a turning point in Lucy’s investigation, as she searches out the Metal Minotaur and uncovers some of the secrets of Sherlock Frankenstein’s villainous meeting. The twist is interesting and should lead to a good final confrontation. The art again from David Rubín is truly amazing.

Star Wars: Doctor Aphra #15 begins Aphra’s latest mission for the murder bots. The dialogue for this issue from Si Spurrier is just spot on as it punches up some of the more humorous aspects of the series. Emilio Laiso’s art also gets to shine again, with some of the best depictions of various species throughout the Star Wars universe.
| Published by Marvel
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Summit #1, like Noble and KINO, focuses on one of the astronauts who were sent out to stop the asteroid from crashing into Earth. Ostensibly, Valentina Resnick-Baker was the only one to publicly survive, even though we as readers know at least the fates of David Powell and Alistair Meath, which makes Val’s supposed visions of her crew a little more interesting. Amy Chu and Jan Duursema seem to have one of the more central books here to the comics universe’s central plot, with explicit ties to Foresight and following up on the deliberate murders of scientists who knew the truth about the asteroid, so it’s nice to see the story focus on character more than plot. It’s also really nice to see Duursema’s art again.

Tales of Suspense #100 is a great first issue from Matthew Rosenberg and Travel Foreman. Rosenberg’s Hawkeye is very much in the Fraction vein and his interactions throughout the comic are hilarious.

Transformers: Till All Are One Annual 2017 brings both the series and Mairghread Scott’s tenure to a close. This ties up a few loose ends from the series and from the First Strike crossover, while giving Cybertron a new status quo going forward. This change hasn’t been reflected yet in the other Transformers titles yet, but it should be interesting to see a potentially friendlier and more progressive Cybertron. I am hoping that some of the personal revelations about Starscream will be picked up by either Optimus Prime or Lost Light.

Unholy Grail #5 brings the series to a close. In order to do so, it jumps over a few things, and pushes forward the timeline, which to me makes it feel a little rushed compared to previous issues. Still, the entire series has been a bleak reinterpretation of the Arthurian myth and that time shift adds to the feeling of emptiness. Wonderful artwork from Mirko Colak.

24 References You May Have Missed in Kong: Skull Island
Tumblr media
Having had a blast with Kong: Skull Island on the big screen, I was eager to delve into the special features that accompanied the home video release. Director Jordan Vogt-Roberts' informative audio commentary is a highlight, as he points out a myriad of references that are peppered throughout the film.
Ranging from obvious to quite subtle, the influences stem from films, video games, anime, and manga. Here are 24 references you may have missed in the film:
Tumblr media
1. The reveal of Kong in the prologue is inspired by the video game Shadow of the Colossus.
2. The neon lights reflected on the phone booth as Samuel L. Jackson takes a call early in the movie are based on a similar shot in The Conversation.
Tumblr media
3. The Athena logo seen on a boat in the Bangkok scene is Vogt-Roberts' "dumb, unnecessary nod" to Alien, because the A's are in the same font as Alien's title.
4. Vogt-Roberts' pays tribute to his fist film, The Kings of Summer. Its stars, Nick Robinson, Moises Arias, and Erin Moriarty, briefly appear in the background of two shots just before Tom Hiddleston's character is introduced in Saigon. Later, the names of soldiers killed on Skull Island are those of The Kings of Summer writer Chris Galletta and producers John Hodges and Peter Saraf.
Tumblr media
5. The overhead shot of Tom Hiddleston and Brie Larson's characters talking with boxes stacked up alongside them is a "weird homage" to first room you play in Metal Gear Solid.
6. Samuel L. Jackson's character saying "Hold onto your butts" is the film’s most obvious tribute; a call-back to the oft-quoted line Jackson delivers in Jurassic Park. Vogt-Roberts requested it be put in the script, thinking Jackson wouldn't want to say it, but the veteran actor did so without question.
Tumblr media
7. The shot of the helicopters entering the storm before reaching Skull Island is inspired by the vibrant landscapes in Mad Max: Fury Road.
8. Vogt-Roberts envisioned the film as "Apocalypse Now mixed with King Kong." Most notably, the helicopters flying in and dropping bombs on Skull Island echoes Apocalypse Now's "Ride of the Valkyries" scene.
Tumblr media
9. The mountain visible in the distance as the helicopters approach Skull Island (actually shot in Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay) is taken from the video game Journey.
10. The lettering and serial number on top of the record player featured in the film matches the box that houses the Ark of the Covenant at the end of Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Tumblr media
11. There are several throwbacks to the original 1933 version of King Kong. The first comes when Kong eats a solider out of helicopter. Vogt-Roberts states, "One of the things that I love about the '33 version ... is that Kong ate people."
12. The shot of a solider impaled by the giant spider's leg is, in fact, an homage to the iconic scene from Cannibal Holocaust. Vogt-Roberts admits that he cannot believe it made it into the film.
Tumblr media
13. Kong fighting a giant squid is an update of a similar scene in Toho's King Kong vs. Godzilla.
14. Kong slurping the squid tentacles off his face is an homage to a similar shot in Oldboy. Vogt-Roberts showed it to director Park Chan-wook, who thought it was amazing.
Tumblr media
15. John C. Reilly's character wears a jacket that prominently features a Lizard Company patch. This is a slick reference to Taxi Driver, in which Travis Bickle dons a King Kong Company patch.
16. The boat that John C. Reilly's character assembled out of plane parts is named Gray Fox after a character in Metal Gear Solid.
Tumblr media
17. The name of the Japanese soldier, Gunpei Ikari, derives from Gunpei Yokoi, co-creator of Metroid and original designer of the Game Boy, and Shinji Ikari, the protagonist of Neon Genesis Evangelion.
18. The sword belonging to Gunpei Ikari, which John C. Reilly's character keeps and later uses, features same two-triangle design as the blade in Princess Mononoke.
Tumblr media
19. The sequence in which John Ortiz's character is captured and dismembered by prehistoric birds features two references: a first-person-shooter-style viewpoint inspired by Call of Duty, followed by a silhouette in front of the sunset reminiscent of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial's flight in front of the moon.
20. Kong’s standoff against the soldiers toward the end of the film is inspired by Dragon Ball Z and Evangelion, in that Kong looks Saiyan and the size of the moon and skyline are exaggerated. The final fight between Kong and the Skullcrawler is also influenced by the same two sources.
Tumblr media
21. The villainous monster known as the Skullcrawler took a long time to design, ultimately culling from the two-legged creature in 1933's King Kong, the inelegance of the monster in The Host, No-Face from Spirited Away, the first angel in Evangelion, and Cubone from Pokemon.
22. The moment of tension between the soldiers and the rest of the humans, all with weapons drawn, after Kong is taken down is inspired by Full Metal Jacket. Vogt-Roberts admits, "Obviously the intensity is probably nowhere near that."
Tumblr media
34. The nods even extend to the film's sound design: When Samuel L. Jackson's character is on the radio, the static is a fusion of the probe droid from Empire Strikes Back and the radio static from The Conversation. Similarly, the sound of the boat starting has shades of Star Wars' Millennium Falcon.
24. Although Kong: Skull Island takes a very different approach to the kaiju movie than 2014's Godzilla, Vogt-Roberts does include a nod to that film. When Kong and the Skullcrawler start fighting, it's shown through Brie Larson's character's camera lens until she's swept away just as the action is picking up, similar to how Godzilla teased the audience with monster battles.
Vogt-Roberts confesses that he only points out a faction of the references, teasing that he may one day publish a master list with all of them. How many did you pick up on?
Despite the slew of influences, the young director constantly challenged himself to subvert expectations and do things that hadn't been before. In doing so, he crafted a wildly entertaining, fantastical spectacle. Read my full review of Kong: Skull Island here.
Kong: Skull Island is available now on 4K Ultra HD, 3D Blu-ray, Blu-ray, and DVD via Warner Bros.

Hi, do you guys know of any fics where one or both are Indiana Jones type adventurers?
i found some indiana jones aus??
Here by HareBrained (1/1 | 888 | R)
Indiana Jones AU/Fusion where Derek is Indy and Stiles is Marion.
“Jeez, Derek. Is there actually anywhere that doesn't hurt?” Stiles snaps, sitting back.
Slowly, Derek points to the tip of his left elbow, eyes watching Stiles’ face, looking for a reaction. “Here.”
Raiders of the Lost Spark by alby_mangroves, marguerite_26 (1/1 | 8,065 | R)
"I knew you'd be back one day," Stiles said, glancing over to see Derek grin softly at his words.
The sight of it broke through the little control Stiles was holding onto, and he drew closer. He couldn't stop the wide smile on his face as he ran his fingers over the worn leather of Derek's lapels. He got lost for a moment, staring into the pale eyes he'd so often tried to remember the exact color of.
"Derek Hale," he said, fond. And he swung his fist with every ounce of hate he'd felt since he was sixteen. His knuckle landed hard on Derek's jaw, knocking him to the ground. "You left!"
(Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark inspired, with Derek as Indi, Stiles as Marion)
