A range of Tulipa (tulip) cultivars create an eye-catching display in the raised beds of Inverness Botanic Garden, Scotland. They were under planted with blue flowering Viola (pansy) and Myosotis sylvatica (forget-me-not) cultivars.

A raised bed can be time consuming to make but when you have a nearby stream, dry riverbed or lowland with the possibility of water levels rising, swamp or in wetlands, it is a great way to stay dry and off the ground. Most people use two crossbeams for support but I used four due to my weight and the thickness of the branches available. Once set up, place branches across and cover with leaves or bushes for insulation and a comfy nights sleep. This vigorous Spiraea 'Arguta' (bridal wreath) was thriving in this small raised bed and producing these cascading branches of foaming flowers. Once established the deciduous shrub can be pruned after flowering removing the flowered shoots to a bud. On mature specimens it is possible to cut back a quarter to a fifth of the old shoots to the base.
