belated Ramadan Mubarak!
I try to do a bit of reading every Ramadan, so, for accountability, and so that when I inevitably don’t get through them I can find my list next year—here's my (extremely very ambitious) reading list for this year!
(suggestions are very welcome, with the warning that I very much may not get through them. this year, I’m trying to learn more about Islam and liberation theology and I’m trying to read more abolitionist texts, and of course my standard queer Muslim books, I’m trying to read more poetry by Muslim poets I don’t know well, and every Ramadan I try and only read fiction by Muslim authors, so there’s some sff on here too!)
non-fic:
memoirs:
We Have Always Been Here by Samra Habib (reread)
Hijab Butch Blues by Lamya H
The Colour of God by Ayesha S Chaudhry
Love is an Ex-Country by Randa Jarrar
A Dutiful Boy by Mohsin Zaidi
other nonfic:
Islam and Anarchism by Mohamed Abdou
We Do This Til We Free Us by Mariame Kaba (reread-ish? I never fully finished it)
Let This Radicalise You by Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba
Qur'an and Woman by Amina Wadud (which I also never finished)
The Women's Khutbah Book by Fatima Seedat and Sa'diyya Shaikh
Qur’an of the Oppressed: Liberation Theology and Gender Justice in Islam by Shadaab Rahemtulla
With Stones in Our Hands: Writings on Muslims, Racism, and Empire by Sohail Daulatzai and Junaid Rana
fiction:
The Candle and the Flame by Nafiza Azad
Mirage by Somaiya Daud (yes I still have not read this)
The Light at the Bottom of the World by London Shah
Roses, in the Mouth of a Lion by Bushra Rehman
A Tempest of Tea by Hafsah Faisal
poetry:
Halal If You Hear Me (anthology)
If They Come For Us by Fatimah Asghar (reread)
Hagar Poems by Mohja Kahf
Bad Diaspora Poems by Momtaza Mehri
The Fortieth Day by Kazim Ali
Black Seeds by Tariq Touré
Postcolonial Banter by Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan

March 10, 2024 - Sunday | Ramadan Prep III
I love that the concept of time in Islam is always that it goes on. You can't delay Ramadan, or prayers, or Eid no matter how unready you feel. No matter what is happening in your life or in anyone else's, prayer goes on, Ramadan goes on as does life. It's a kind of stability you come to appreciate when everything else feels scattered in the wind.

this is a message to any muslims from a friendly jew:
since ramadan is coming up soon, here's a reminder for y'all to prepare your bodies for the fast. I know it's still a couple weeks away but it's better to start getting lots of fluids and good, hearty food now instead of the day before. I'll admit that im unfamiliar with the spiritual aspects of preparing for ramadan, but i do know what prepping your body for a fast is like. and i also know how easy it is for a fast to creep up on you because you forgot that it was happening so soon. anyway good luck y'all and take good care of yourselves! ill probably post another one of these closer to ramadan

Ramadan Headcanons with the Second Years
Throughout your school week, you had reliable classmates that would check up on you.
Riddle would show up before classes or during lunch to check on your condition. He wanted to make sure you weren’t overdoing it. He had a well known healer for a mother, and he picked up several cues to look out for in all his time of studying. He would straighten your uniform and you would give him a tired smile. He would put the back of his hand on your forehead to make sure you were not running a temperature. He would remind you to take it easy and would send a message with his eyes to Ace and Deuce to not cause you any trouble.
Ruggie would swipe the special meals in the cafeteria and save them for you, after he set aside Leona’s portion of course. Ruggie was invited to dinner with you whenever he was able. He would bring the treats he saved that day to have with you. He knows all to well the hunger pains and the emotional and physical fatigue that comes with it, so he helps out with cleaning after Iftar is finished while you pray.
Azul comments on how gracious you are as you continue your tradition of fasting this year as well. He makes sure to keep your schedule light during this month and coincides your breaks with Iftar times. He is more prepared this year and keeps hard candies and sugary drinks on hand should you need to break your fast.
Floyd, well, tries to always give you a squeeze and chase you. You always seem to slip by him with the help of the other octa students. Floyd, unbeknownst to you, have slowed down to allow you to escape from him…just for now. After all, he loves the fish dish you try to bribe him with.
Jade is always looking forward to any dishes you make during this time of the year. He loves the seasoned mushrooms you made last year, and looks forward to it this year as well. What this? You have a type of tea he hasn’t tried before? He would gladly partake in such tea with you.
Kalim is always happy to have you. He’s so happy to be able to spend this time of year with you again. You are invited to visit his family with him and Jamil. While you might be away from yours, you can always consider him family. His family is welcoming and treats you as their own. Eating, talking, and praying with them really reminds you of your family back home and gives you a continued sense of belonging in this world.
You can turn to Jamil when you need a place of peace and quiet. You help him cook and prep Suhur and Iftar. The seasonings always reminding you of home. When you visit Kalim’s family, you also see his sister. She is always fun to be around and loves to embarrass her brother. Jamil learned your favorite treats the year before and would make them especially for you. You, of course, would eat his dates for him in secret.
Silver’s main job was to keep any food Lilia made away from you. He didn’t want you to suffer from the food Lilia made. Silver would lend you his coat to keep you warm should you need it. You can always rest on him and take a nap. He will guard you in your sleep. Silver will make you comfort dishes that will be gentle on your stomach. His animal friends would bring you flower crowns to bring a smile on your face. The birds nuzzling your cheek always puts a gentle smile on his face.
