#ramblings about ships
re: gojohime / gouta
I like the dynamic. I like how the shippers can universally agree in fanfic that gojo is a cocky pining idiot hoe who deserves all of the angst caused by an oblivious waaaaay-too-good-for-him utahime.
even in canon, I like the dynamic in how she’s older and he’s younger, but he’s stronger and she’s (supposedly) weaker, and how he’s tol to her smol. everyone, and I mean everyone is weaker than you gojo, and yet for someone who ‘can’t be the type of person to be faithful to one woman’, he’s managed to consistently and in the words of one poster on this site, faithfully tease her for being ‘weak’ for over a decade. it’s like an inside joke between them. he just...he has so much ‘notice me senpai’ energy wow.
and despite her being supposedly ‘weak’, she is (I think?) the first person he told her about his suspicions about a traitor. and for her part, for someone who supposedly hates his guts, she trusts him implicitly even if it means working in secret from the elders. wow, what is with the unconditional trust? I have a great need to know if there is something more to this.
she hates him ‘most of the time’ (so how does she feel about him the rest of the time??).
in that iconic scene when they were younger, he catches her attention first, ‘you cryin’ utahime?’, and correct me if I’m misremembering, but when mei mei asks him if he’ll ask her if she was crying and she wouldn’t mind if he consoled her, and gojo just flippantly says you’re strong so you won’t cry, I may be reading too much into it (most definitely), but couldn’t that mean that if utahime ever cried, gojo would ‘console’ her??
I just..really like their dynamic. Canon or otherwise, there’s just so much potential and fanfic fuel.

What made you start shipping rightmin and why do you like it so much?
Sorry if this is a weird question. I’m just overly curious ^^”
No need to be sorry, I love answering questions!
The main thing that got me to ship them is stumbling onto cute drawings of them together. Specifically this drawing of different ships by @luna-almighty-god, which piqued my interest and made me look it up to see more. I had already liked the idea of Henry and RHM being friendlier towards each other, so it was only natural for me to start thinking of them as more romantically involved when I found those pictures.
As for why I like Rightmin so much, to tell you the truth, even I don't fully understand why. The only thing I can think of that I can put into words is that it's rare. I happen to latch onto rare ships a lot (except for a few popular ships in other fandoms I'm into, but you get the idea). It's refreshing, really. I mean, you barely see any ships with Right that isn't Copperright. Or with Henry, everyone seems to be shipping him with Charles or Ellie. Don't get me wrong, these aren't bad ships by any means, it's just those ships are everywhere. It kinda makes it more meaningful to find art of a rare ship, if you get what I mean. Also, I think it's interesting to have two characters who are almost always thought of as enemies most of the time fall in love with each other. Enemies to lovers, y'know?
This got longer than I thought it would, haha.

is it just me or has anyone else been inserting themselves/a version of themselves/or ocs into the fictional worlds of movies, shows, games, books, etc. for a loong time and way before you ever even knew terms like “self-insert” or “self ship” or “oc” existed??

Ok but can we just take a moment to appreciate the absolute hilariousness that is any Patton X dark side ship.
Can you imagine meeting someone who is just the definition of sunshine and rainbows. He’s been hugging your dog non stop and you met on your way out of a store because he was buying ingredients to make cup cakes.
He then tells you that his boyfriend came with him and when you ask where he is, he tells you he’s not too far behind him. Then when you look to see his boyfriend you just see a guy head to toe in black and looks like he’s killed before and will kill again if you mess with him.
And if that isn’t goals I don’t know what is😂

Creator: *makes a character canonically aro*
Allos: *cry about it* *argue about how their ship is more important than rep* *argue about how that specific character being in love is somehow better rep for something else than aro rep* *erases their aro identity* *ships them anyway, specifically stating they know the character is aro but wish to ignore it* *get mad over aros getting upset about all of this*
Same allos: “oh but I do support the whole aro community 😚”

i know its regularly said that the nein accidentally stole a ship. i even rather regularly joke about that being one of my favorite things they did
but now, rewatching it, holy shit they really, truly, did ACCIDENTALLY steal a fucking ship. it really is an accident on so many fronts

Am I the only one who absolutely loves imagining their f/os in different outfits? (Whether that be casual, formal, lazy wear, etc.)
It's like my favorite pastime, imagining them in a nice suit/dress to go outside where, or them in a tank top and shorts because it's hot out and they wanna relax gosh darn it. Highly recommend
(ok to rb!)

I dont have time to finish it before work but I wanted to share w/ yall that i had a littol funny comic idea that centers around the headcanon that Remus's personal form of affection is biting his favorite people and the bitemarks left behind(that are more magic than real bc he actually doesnt bite hard enough for it to even hurt so shh) are his way of showing that theyre his.
Its not even a romantic thing either bc he'll bite his brother's arm or elbow or bite thomas, but like idk
I just. I was talking w/ Ske about it and immediately fell in love w/ the concept of Remus taking up the roll of being personally protective over all the others and Thomas rather than say Virgil or Janus.
The one in the group thats chaotic and terrorizes the others lovingly but the moment anyone outside of their little group tries to do the same Remus is immediately up in arms and unfortunately the only one in the group ready to throw down without any morals holding him back.
The kind of protective thats just sweet and caring and not actually too oppressive within the inner circle but vaugely terrifying to any outsiders stepping over the wrong line??
Aka Remus existing as the groups' Scary Dog privileges?? But taking the dog aspect a little too literally. The others, especially Roman, Janus and Virgil(who are used to the treatment) and Logan(who just. Finds it endearing as he knows its Remus's most direct way of showing his affection) are absolutely chill with it.
Thomas and Patton take some time to adjust to it but are perfectly happy to accept Remus's peculiar form of affection.(though Patton does sorta wish Remus wouldnt chews to place the mark on his ear, but hes accepted his fate lol)

me: I love platonic marichat so much!! just two goofy friends without any crushes getting in the way :) wow I love it when they really are friends only without any romance, it’s so good!! so refreshing. established relationship is not really my jam anyway. maybe they could have a tiny baby crush but buried deep down so that they sometimes blush a little when they get too close? But just to add some seasoning cause ofc they stay platonic. yeah that’s the stuff 😌
me when I see/read romantic marichat: oh. oh gosh. wow. what an inspired idea 😭 it’s glorious. no one has ever thought of something so creative and compelling. are they—are they gonna KISS?? YEA THEY ARE KISSING THIS IS NOT A DRILL I NEED TO LIE DOWN WTFFFFF this is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, I am wEepInG,,,

revisiting the rokkaku arc (an analysis)
Listen, I will always love rokkaku arc for the sougo-focus and shippy reasons. In the same way, the Gintama Wiki says Sougo has only ever apologized to two women, Mitsuba and Kagura (though I’m a bit doubtful on this since he casually apologizes to people more or less, Kagura’s was in between a gag and serious, still hilarious though, sorry Sho-chan), I think he has only ever used keigo (polite speech) for Mitsuba, and Kagura. Though in Kagura’s case, it was after threats, but that’s it, that’s their literal dynamic. And this whole interaction is again just funny to me because rather than a wolf, Kagura has the guts to treat Sougo like a damn puppy.
But in all seriousness though. Sougo is always blank-faced or evil-faced. In Hijikata’s words, it’s as if he has no weaknesses. Whenever he interacts with any other character, he almost always comes out on top. Meanwhile, his sweet side is only reserved for Kondou and Mitsuba, and yet at the same time, interactions with Kagura have him shedding that blank mask. He gets casually annoyed like when he was a kid, when emotions would show more often on his face as compared to the deadpan face he dons on now (part of me thinks he became even more deadpan when Mitsuba died). You can see him get angry, and it’s always a tie between him and Kagura. If he embarrasses Kagura, she gets him back.
In this one conversation, Kagura says she hates him, but acknowledges his skill. More than that she cuts to the truth of the matter. She’s confident in saying that he’s not a murderer, so why is he pretending to be one? She wants him to tell the truth, not just for Kirie’s sake, but for his sake as well. For all that she says she hates him, the truth outs and instead shows her concern for him. (Which Sougo calls out-of-character for her; this later gets paralleled when Kagura calls him out-of-character for trying to say goodbye during the Farewell Shinsengumi arc. In conclusion, they’re both tsunderes ffs.)
And for Sougo’s part, because Kagura isn’t someone he can easily intimidate, because she’s so annoying that he can’t easily shut her out, he ends up giving away pieces of the truth. This is a secret he’s kept for over two years, but one way or the other, he opens up to Kagura.
*Also I just really love the fact that he calls her ‘ojou-san’, even if mockingly, instead of his usual ‘komusume’ or ‘gaki’.
In the same way, I think Kagura may be the only (?) woman (besides Mitsuba of course), that he’s given his gratitude to. Again for shippy reasons, I can’t believe they’re talking about how a woman’s heart easily changes, in this case Kagura’s heart. It’s serious fanfic fuel. Because in the same way, Sougo is opening up, Kagura’s opinion toward him also slowly changes. (I also love how between the both of them, Sougo is almost always the tsukkomi, which rarely happens otherwise.)
And this conversation is just so important. Sougo of course has the Shinsengumi. Even with Hijikata, and then later on with Gintoki, he shows a bit of vulnerability. But with Kagura now, he’s quite honest. He’s openly showing his vulnerability. And Kagura never exploits that weakness.
This, to me, is a really important aspect of their bond, shipping or otherwise. Because this conversation ties so well to the Shogun Assasination arc, and the Farewell Shinsengumi arc. Through this conversation, Kagura gets to know more about the Sadist, what makes him tick, what’s important to him. He’s not just a little shit, but someone with his own insecurities that he tries to fight against to protect what’s important. And Kagura can respect that, but more than that, Kagura is the person to reassure him about those insecurities. For all that Sougo admits he’s a killer, Kagura instead calls him a softie who can’t even stand the mere sight of a girl’s tears. This ties so well to when Kagura reassures Sougo much later on that Soyo didn’t hate him or wasn’t afraid of him.
But I disagree with Sougo when he says a ‘kid’ like Kagura wouldn’t understand. Because Kagura is an unbelievably intuitive person, and I love that so much about her character.
Kagura shies away from killing because she doesn’t want to lose to herself, and Sougo for his part probably sees her as someone clean or pure, and therefore someone who won’t be able to understand him, though it’s not her fault. Kids are supposed to be innocent after all. The Shinsengumi are supposed to dirty their hands so the innocent won’t have to. But that’s absolutely wrong. Kagura has Kamui as a brother. And though she shies away from killing, she absolutely understands what it means to protect something. And as someone who constantly fights to win against herself, Kagura is the one who can reassure ‘killers’ like Sougo, Kamui, and Nobume.
Sougo for his part, despite his reservations and his preconceptions about roles, still ends up unleashing his burdens to a ‘kid’ anyway. I guess in that aspect, Kagura is really an intriguing existence for Sougo. She’s not a fellow officer like Nobume whose hands are expected to get dirty. She’s not a villain like Kamui who he’s expected to defeat. She’s supposed to be part of the people he protects, a civilian, and yet he fights seriously against her, never underestimating her. By his own definition, she’s part of the people he’s supposed to get his hands dirty for, and yet despite his propensity to handle his problems himself, Kagura with all her bullheaded stubbornness manages to be there for him anyway, to support him one way or another. Maybe Sougo always thought he had to do it alone because he was the strongest, but he can’t pull that crap with Kagura because Kagura is as, if not stronger than him. Kagura doesn’t fall into a neat box or category for him. He protects and fights her, while she fights and supports him.
LISTEN, I WILL ALWAYS BE BITTER MITSUBA DIED. This arc also subtly ties with the Mitsuba arc I think. For one, Sougo mentions his aneue, although for gag reasons, Kagura still gets to find out that Sougo had an older sister who died.
For all that we joke that Sougo’s gag proposal answers Kagura’s wish to never have an empty house again, Kagura’s statements here answers Mitsuba’s words when she said Sougo was always alone because he was ‘selfish, obstinate, and stubborn’. I will forever and always be bitter that we didn’t get to see more of Mitsuba. She would have been reassured and unbelievably happy that Sougo despite the way he is, is no longer alone. It’s not even just his brothers in the Shinsengumi, but rather for all his faults, there are other idiots like him willing to fight for him, support him, and protect him. In Kagura’s words in the manga, ‘idiots travel in packs’. I just can’t even imagine what would have happened had Mitsuba met Kagura. I think somehow, she would have been deeply grateful for her.
I love Kagura so much. That care and sensitivity, not just towards Kirie, but also towards Sougo. She knows him so well, despite all of his efforts to guard himself and hide. All of their interactions thus far lead her to confidently say that he’d be happiest with someone there to fight and trying to kill him (and personally for me, I think he’s happiest when fighting Kagura, see: post-timeskip).
In other words, this was a great arc for character insights and relationship building, not just for Sougo, but also Kagura. It’s not even for entirely shippy reasons. That mutual understanding and constant support amidst that outward dislike (they’re tsunderes, I tell you) is just another thing that makes their relationship and interactions so compelling. For all that Kagura knows him so well, Sougo proves that he also knows her just as much as the Feigned Illness arc and Post-Timeskip arc would show.
And how many chapters and arcs later, it’s still Kagura who gives him the reassurance he needs, and with character development marching on, he even finds it in himself to be vulnerable for once and actively seek her out for that exact same reassurance that only she can give.
I just really love mutually hella supportive ships. And it’s for these reasons, that I really think they’re perfect for each other. I honestly think Kagura is a special existence for Sougo. She’s the recipient for so many exceptions and out-of-character moments for him, that I think even after the manga has ended, no other girl for him will do.

thinking about showing my tough, always fighting f/o gentle love. thinking about tracing their calloused hands and kissing their knuckles, wrapping my arms around them lightly enough that they do not feel trapped but tightly enough that they can feel my thundering heart, beating for them.
thinking about holding them as we sleep, finally being the one held and protected from the world, chaste kisses to their cheek and forehead just because, a tender affection without strings or pain.

i think love is wanting to get drunk on their laughter, love is cursing them and all their saints with a smile on your face. love is the shore after the shipwreck, it is walking with each other, meeting each other step for step, promising that you will never stop fighting for each other. love is thinking someone is worth saving, love is taking off armor in unison, in understanding that there will be good and bad days but that you'll always keep trying. love is drowning and thinking of something mundane about them, love is taking up the challenge of being worthy of them, love is being the voice leading them back from hell. love is wishing they would just destroy you so they would hurt less, love is telling them they should never be dangerous to you and then feeling blissfully happy when they do. love is letting go but staying together, love is long winter nights in their window, love is feeding their birds and holding their hands and letting them lift you up.
love can be born in the most tragic places, most tragic cities, most tragic stories. love always has a place if you never stop fighting for it.

Lisa being Razor’s teacher is so cute. I know she would absolutely sneak in some self indulgent stuff in between their lessons. She’s definitely taught him how to make tea and proper tea time etiquette. Some days she’ll comb and braid his hair and tie it with a purple rose so it looks like hers. (Later that day Razor meets up with Bennett and he’s like “oh hey, Razor, you look great!!”)
Other days she will take him shopping for clothes and he becomes the most fashionable boy around. Big witch hats don’t suit him, so he favors maybe an eyepatch like Kaeya (But he really believes in the “eyepatches are hereditary” thing though fjfhf) ANYWAY Razor definitely sees that Lisa calls everyone “cutie” or “sweetie” or “dear,” and eventually asks what they mean.
Lisa laughs and tells him they’re just nicknames for people you care about.
So the next day comes, and Bennett goes to meet Razor for a bite to eat somewhere. “Hi, sweetie,” Razor calls over to him.

Thing I read way too much into re: the Doctor and Clara’s relationship in Deep Breath:
During the 11th Doctor′s regeneration, they very pointedly remind the audience that the Doctor imprints on people after regenerating (having him remember Amy and explain aloud the significance of her being the first face he saw) and then the very first thing the 12th Doctor does is peer into Clara’s face with deep deliberation.
And, on Clara’s side of things, it understandably freaks her out a bit, right? A minute ago he was this guy who, sure, he’s an alien, but the exact brand of “not human” 11 would display to people was usually endearing and quirky and palpable... he buried the stuff that wasn’t as best he could. But suddenly there’s 12, and he’s this unabashedly alien presence, not trying to be young or human anymore... his gaze here is very unreadable, animal-ish. He’s different now in ways that are very hard for Clara to parse, and it’s evident before he’s even said a word. Her part of Deep Breath is about learning to understand him as the same person despite his sudden shift in personality and behavior.
However, from the Doctor’s perspective:
We find out in Deep Breath that 12 is the way he is because, subconsciously or no, he trusted Clara to see him as the blunt, inhuman, unfathomably old mess the Doctor really is and still accept him for it:
VASTRA: He looked young. Who do you think that was for?
VASTRA: Everyone. I wear a veil as he wore a face; for the same reason.
CLARA: What reason?
VASTRA: The oldest reason there is for anything. To be accepted.
VASTRA: The Doctor regenerated in your presence. The young man disappeared, the veil lifted. He trusted you. Are you judging him?
So I think that it’s very significant to him that she’s the first person he sees here. He’s making sure he looks at her properly and really sees her. He’s now this person who might not be acceptably human anymore, and he needs the face he imprints on to be someone he trusts to know him and see him despite that. It’s going to define him.
But, again, his whole persona and appearance pretty visibly freaks her out. All he sees throughout Deep Breath is her looking scared and upset, all he hears is her talking to Jenny about how he’s not the person she cares for and how she wants him to change back (to which he mumbles in his sleep about not being seen). It’s a scary moment of truth for him, where his friend has told him that, for all his trust, he really isn’t acceptable without that veil. While she’s struggling to see him as the Doctor, he’s struggling with this sense of abandonment, and at the end he breaks down as much as he’s liable to and asks that she not leave him like that:
DOCTOR: You can't see me, can you? You look at me, and you can't see me. Have you any idea what that's like? I'm not on the phone, I'm right here, standing in front of you. Please, just, just see me.
And after she’s had time to think about what that first scary glare towards her actually meant, what does she do to show him that she’s going to make that effort for him? She mimics his imprinting, and looks at him with the same careful consideration as he gave her.
Shows him that, even though this gesture is entirely non human, she gets it and understands the trust behind it and actually does see him.

Pls tell us ur thoughts on chengyao
Fair warning: I’m not sure how well this is structured. I apologize in advance.
All right, the thing about Chengyao is that it is wonderful as a premise but a trainwreck as soon as you approach anywhere near execution. Jiang Cheng and Jin Guangyao are two rich uncles in joint custody of Jin Ling. They both have the background of being a son who tried to live up to their shitty father's expectations, but were in the end ignored for someone else. They're also under a lot of stress. With all this, in theory there should be a chance for something to happen between them, right? Right? No! Because neither of them trust anyone, Jiang Cheng doesn't like Jin Guangyao because he hides too much and Jin Guangyao doesn't like Jiang Cheng because he's so pathetically open about his emotions in public it's almost embarrassing.
Every interaction is full of awkwardness and forced smiles and politeness, and the only thing that can smooth it over is if Jin Ling is around. He's really the only thing these two will agree on. Which is highly unfortunate, because Jin Ling is an important thing in both their lives, and for sixteen years of co-parenting both sides of Chengyao have to cope with knowing the other person in this whole deal they find infuriating is also pretty much the only other person who cares about A-Ling as much as they do. They would really, really rather not meet with each other often, but for Jin Ling's sake they can suck it up and work out a schedule for each of them to see their nephew.
Regular visits with Jin Ling involved make it more amusing for us and worse for Chengyao. There's already a very, very begrudging respect between them because they're involved in Jin Ling's well-being, and as it turns out, people you don't like can still be good-looking. Yes, Jiang Cheng is a walking ball of insecurity and parental issues Jin Guangyao does not want to risk getting entangled in, at all, but that does not detract from how you could cut yourself on Jiang Cheng's cheekbones. And yes, Jin Guangyao gets on every one of Jiang Cheng's nerves, but he is tragically also very pretty and no one is immune to Lianfang-zun's dimples. Jin Guangyao watches Jiang Cheng teach Jin Ling how to swim and very pointedly does not think about the water dripping down Jiang Cheng's bare torso. Jiang Cheng sees Jin Guangyao sitting on the floor of Jinlintai, playing with Fairy and A-Ling, and struggles not to call the sight cute.
This 'goddammit, I guess I'm stuck with you' dynamic thanks to Jin Ling combined with some low-level repressed horniness culminates in what we get in canon, which is two men who have never once gotten close to fucking each other having Divorced Couple Energy through the goddamn roof. Neither of them are happy about this. They do their best to ignore it. To no avail, which is why even at Guanyin Temple you wind up with moments like this.
All of this aside, though, if Chengyao did manage to get together, around their dislike for each other and their individual relationship issues (which in Jiang Cheng's case is fearing a marriage like his parents' and with Jin Guangyao it's a whole complex surrounding extra-marital sex), it would be very fun, because Jin Guangyao would prefer to be in control of a situation and Jiang Cheng, regardless of whether he knows it or not, would prefer someone to tell him what to do. There would be many regrets involved and some mortified eye contact during social events after that, but at least the sex was good.
That's all I've got. Thanks for the ask!

Piggybacking off another ask. I didnt get into tma until this summer so jm was already canon. How did it feel to go from thinking they would've be canon to it actually happening? At what point did the fandom go "wait do they have a chance?"
Whooooa boy. That's a big one.
For the first question: overwhelming joy and also an intense feeling of vindication. Joy for obvious reasons, vindication because, well... most queer ships just don't go canon. And jonmartin started like any other ship for me: reading into subtext, telling myself it wouldn't happen, that I was seeing things that weren't there. Sure, yeah, Martin was worrying over Jon, and sure, Jon talked about Martin on the tapes a lot, but that sort of intense devotion to each other happens with a lot of character pairings that later get brushed off by the creators as "they're just friends." To have TMA step up and say, no, you're not reading into this too much, the romance is really there, this is real... it was an incredibly validating moment. I'm not sure if I can put it into words properly, but having that support and encouragement from the creators, that message of "no, you're not being foolish for reading the story this way, you never have been, this is what love looks like..." it meant a hell of a lot, after facing down so many shows that try to sweep any hint of queer romance under the rug. (TMA was my first-ever podcast, and I was unaware of how common it is in the genre.)
For the second question, the fandom had already had that moment by the time I caught up. The first episode that I listened to live was 113: Breathing Room, and Martin's crush on Jon had already been made canon back in 106. I think 106 was the first inclination anyone in the fandom had that the ship had a chance, but there was still a lot of uncertainty of whether there'd be canon reciprocation until season four.
Weird tangent here: I noticed, in late season three/early season four, a very odd trend in the words the fandom used. When I jumped in, post-106, everyone said Martin liked Jon. He had a crush on him. It was in fic and meta, casual discussions and legitimate theories. Toward the end of the season, as Martin's feelings became more and more obvious, everyone started using love. He loves Jon, he's in love with him. People kept used like for Jon's feelings (he might like Martin back) until the first few episodes of season four aired, at which point it suddenly became an avalanche of love: he's in love with Martin, they love each other, love confessions became the primary theme of fanfic, instead of crush confessions. I don't know how many people noticed they were doing it, but somewhere deep in the fandom consciousness we had all become aware that this was far more meaningful than a simple "haha office crush how cute" plotline.
Back to the main point. There were a couple of things over the first half of season four that made it clear that it really was going full, reciprocated canon. Beyond just show content and how hard Jon was pining, there were two distinct incidents I remember:
1. Rusty Quill's official account retweeted jonmartin fanart. They had never done it before, they'd never retweeted any ship art before, and I cannot convey to you how ridiculously excited the fandom got about it.
2. Someone tweeted at Jonny to "stop blowing holes in my ship," and he replied "I see no holes. A lot of distressed wood, but no holes." (I believe Alex also responded with a bunch of gifs of sinking ships but it did not lessen the excitement of the moment.)
By mid-season four it was basically a certainty that it was canon, we were all just waiting for Jon to get the courage to actually say something about it. By that point the main question was if they would actually get together, or if Martin would go full Lonely/die and they'd just remain the star-crossed couple that never was. I cannot express just how stressful... well, basically the whole stretch from 154-159 was. Suffice to say, the apocalypse felt tame in comparison.
