on that note what do we think he actually teaches? what is his research on? imo he'd be a good professor for an intro class. he's also mentioned going on digs with students, so maybe a field methods course? (or that could also just be part of his research.) for as much as it's a major part of his life (i mean it's literally his job and his title) we don't get to see him actually teach basically ever

Mod-Your-Dig edit

Hiya friends!

So with this awesome new mod from @lamare-sims and @tvickiesims for gardening from seeds, @joplayingthesims and I wanted a way for farmers to be able to start crops or farms from nothing without having to go and buy seeds from a stand.

Enter, Mod-Ur-Dig by @hugelunatic

I have created a version of this for Jo and myself which gives sims the chance to dig up rocks, bones, treasure chests, maps and water pipes (the usual maxis fun), these cool fossils by Decat (Jo's request), and all of the Maxis and Asaryth gardening seeds from Lamare & TVickie's mod.

You MUST have these objects installed in your game for my custom version of mod-ur-dig to work, otherwise you will get bad gosub tree errors as your sims try to dig things up that the game can't find.

All other random maxis objects that sims have a chance of digging up by default (gnomes, vases, random stuff) have been removed. Your sims will no longer get them. Because, who digs up gnomes and chicken statues, honestly.

The tuning for water pipes, maps, rocks, bones and treasure chests have all been tweaked to my liking. If you would like to tweak them, the ModTheSims page on HugeLunatic's mod has instructions for how to do so. But let's just say that using this mod, you'll be very lucky now to find treasure, water, or a tattered old map!

Could I ask a review for the good old fish boy Relicanth

Relicanth is a coelacanth, no big surprises there. Much like the IRL animal, it was considered extinct for many years before being rediscovered and hasn't really changed at all in a hundred million years. I really like that it's found out in the wild but is still water/rock, meaning that it shares the secondary rock typing of most fossil 'mons.

It's a fairly plain Pokemon, but the big thing it has going for it is its grumpy old man face. It's a pretty subtle element in the grand scheme of things, but it is fun to have it actually look as old as it is, and it adds a bit of flavor to an otherwise straightforward design.

Outside of that, the brown coloration both reflects its rock-typing but also references the Indonesian coelacanth's color. As an added bonus, its shiny is blue, referencing the West Indian Ocean coelacanth.

Beyond that, Relicanth also has the weird feature of a random red dot on it. I don't mind adding some extra color, but the way it's just stuck there with no real rhyme or reason is strange. I've heard people claim its body is a map to the regis, but I've never seen any supporting evidence for this, and given that nothing in the 'dex mentions a map I'm not terribly inclined to believe it, though that would be a neat idea.

I think Relicanth's biggest problem is just that it's fairly forgettable—it's not a 1:1 of a coelacanth but it's pretty close, and between it being fairly monotone in color (save for the aforementioned red dot) and non-evolving there's just not a lot to really make it stand out.

But then again, you couldn't have it evolve, give it a regional form, etc. because the entire point is that it hasn't evolved in 100 million years. It's probably the only Pokemon where being a straightforward one-stage Pokemon is basically part of the theme itself.

So overall: it's a coelacanth, all right. If you like silly old man faces and like coelacanths, you're going to love this guy.

may i receive your rant on why every videogame ever chooses to have columnar basalt in places basalt should not be, like in unsuspecting caves or just dotting beaches with no volcano in sight... because god, that gets me going.

Let me preface this rant by saying, I love when videogames at least try, like I can look at a rock and actually say, "hey that's columnar basalt and not *generic rock texture*" (Pokemon Scarlet and Violet's texture shortened my lifespan). So generally speaking, if I can tell at least vaguely that someone googled photos of rocks when creating a game I am more happy than not, but!

My GOODNESS! I think I could extend this rant to just videogame cave systems in general! Like, caves are only formed in limestones and marbles (And some limey sandstones and salt deposits), BUT for some reason we are mining and finding Rubies? Emeralds? Metals? These caves they are depicting are clearly just supposed to be these natural caves and not abandoned mines, which would give them some leeway to put whatever desirable gemstone or ore they wanted in the game, but they don't choose that for some reason, and it is beyond me why!

And can we talk about how all of these caves got there in the first place? Like limestone only forms in marine environments! Are you telling me that the entire continent you designed was underwater to the extent to have a spiraling cave system forming at least every ten miles of trail explored (Skyrim I am looking at you)? And how acidic is your rain? Are we experiencing an industrial evolution? I CANNOT, also in what situation are these random massive quartz crystals in otherwise fine-grained material forming? Like one, Who would actually leave that laying there? No one. And two, how is this forming? Like are you trying to say this formed after the cave was created or what? If that's the case the more likely mineral would be calcite or gypsum.

My little bird brain can't wrap my head around what they are trying to do here! (The second image is from ESO and I give it a lot of lenience and to be fair they are trying to depict these are geodes that are surrounded by a massive basalt but they are also showing stalactites and stalagmites which aren't in basalts so it still gets points docked).

But yes! Seeing inaccurate geology, columnar basalts included can take you out of a game so fast, same with the imaginary ores that are kind of based off real metals. I think I would be more ok with completely fake names, because then at least I wouldn't have anything to associate it with.

That being said! I will end this rant by pointing out videogames that when either I was playing or my fiancé was playing I was pleasantly surprised by the geology/accurate textures.

ESO- elder scrolls online, I know I just docked it points above, but genuinely they do an amazing job depicting different rock types to the point that on their islands they have limestones. with. fossils. I nearly cried. Of course they still have random metal seems everywhere but it is an MMO and resources are necessary so I can ignore that as long as they keep making accurate landscapes.

Titanfall- I will just add an image because it will speak volumes

like does that shale/siltstone have ripple marks in the middle right hand side? beautiful. amazing. perfect. chief's kiss. (Apex also does a decent job which is a battle royale game that takes place after the Titanfall games, the textures aren't as good obviously but you can definitely tell what kind of rocks are at each map)

3. Horizon Zero Dawn- the graphics in this game are just genuinely impeccable and it takes place in the US but after the collapse of civilization. In a lot of ways, I think it made it a bit easier for the designers, but they still did an amazing job depicting the rocks accurately! I believe there is a Youtube video which compares the actual locations to the videogame locations.

Thinking about KidKiller as parents and I just feel like everything would be... Not as expected from them.

Let's just imagine, that some random child was found hiding on Victoria Punk, and no one can get himself to throw them down the sea, so kid just got accepted as the cabin boy. They would help with cooking, clean the ship, assist in Kid's work, give the ammo, everything the cabin boy does.

And let's just say that Kid starts to grow warm to this kid. He spends time with them, learns about their hobbies and preferences, tries to make toys and buy things they likes, etc. And he will definitely brag about this kid to Killer. He would say some stuff like "The little shit likes trinkets, can ya imagine? Oh, we need to go scavenging when we land on the other island, I wanna see what lil guy say about those knicknacks!", but Killer just keeps silent and tries to avoid the talking about the kid.

As a responsible first mate he tries to spend time with everyone on the ship, but the kid is the only person he's genuinely avoid. It almost seems like he's scared of them. So for the first days Kid just thinks that his partner is not to found of the idea of a child on the ship, but he will get used to them eventually. And when this not happen he gets angry, because know he thinks that Killer really hates that kid, so he confronts him about it.

And Killer confesses that he's scared to talk to them. Back at their home he never thought about his future, he never made plans or dreamed about anything. He just wanted to survive. Even with Kid and their dream to find One Piece he never thought about who he'll be in the future. Gosh, he never even planned to have kids! He thought he would not survive to his 18! But he did. And everything he does is just killing and making spaghetti for the crew. That just it. What kind of conversation he can have with the child? What important lessons he might teach them? Are his bloody hands even worthy to touch this child!?

But Kid stops him. He wants to say something, but can't exactly figure out what. So he gently grabs him by the hand and leads him to the child.

The first conversation happen. Kid asks them to show Killer their collection and they happily brag about every single trinket they have. Killer sits awkwardly and nervously strokes his hairs. He listens about the black feather and how the child found it in front of the scarecrow. Then the button that fall out from their jacked and they keeped it. Than the small cracked rock with the fossil in it.

Killer know got invested. He asks them about the things and some details in the stories and kid happily answers all of them. Then they asks Killer about his hobbies, and he awkwardly confesses that he knows every single way to make pasta, on which kid got all excited because "Oh my gosh, I love pasta!".

And then Killer cooks spaghetti with them. And at the end of the day Kid goes to him smailing all devilishly "Weeell?~". And Killer signs heavily "Yep. I love this little shit"

random idea that i would like to share with the class (or just you, you lovely human being 💕):

river monster!eddie but reader hasn’t come to see him in a while. she wants to, but she’s hardly had any time to go exploring thanks to her new job (or some other thing that would pull her away for a while… maybe family drama??) frankly, she’s hardly had time to even breathe with all the shit that’s been going on. but eddie doesn’t know that… no, for all he knows she’s been hurt… or killed… or, worst of all, mated by another. what would our favorite river monster do to get his girl back? does he leave the river in search of her, even though that’s horribly dangerous for him to do (maybe he can’t breathe for long out of water?? or maybe just having people see him is dangerous… ya know, cause he’s a monster. fuck it, maybe it’s both)? if so, how does he plan on finding her? does he have a plan or is he just being horribly rash and winging it bc nobody takes my mate away from me or fuck, she could be hurt, she needs me?? does he find her?? or does he stay put? sulking in his lonesome river, all alone without his one source of happiness: his precious sunshine, his sweet landling. does he worry about her? or does he think that she’s abandoned him? if so, is he sad or is he angry? what if she comes back? does he rush to her? embrace her? mate her so that she can never leave him again? or does refuse to see her, to hear her out? does he scare her off as a way to protect his own cold-blooded heart?

I’ve been thinking about this ask since last week when I got it. I started a little drabble response but then it turned into a lot of key story telling aaaaaaaaaaaand…

Yeah. I’m keeping some things close to my chest for this. But let me paint you a couple little pictures instead?

So starting at the top. What would he do to get her back?

Well, he’s used to her being gone for varying periods. I mean she just showed up one day out of the woods and she keeps doing it randomly so he tends to wait her out. At least in the beginning. He swims and he sleeps and he hunts and if he’s lucky he finds an unwitting human he can lure and eat and uh…other things.

This Eddie can speak English, he understands it he’s been around too long to not. Plus he has Wayne. No I won’t be explaining this yet, it’s a plot point. So Wayne assures him multiple times that she’s a human. She has a job. She has a community. She can’t just break away from it and sometimes she can’t be there at the exact same time every day.

Once they’ve been together though it’s almost like he can sense where and how far she is. She’s staying close to the river but he knows when she leaves his perimeter. He knows when she’s on solid, dry land. The first couple of times he fights with himself to not leave because he knows he wouldn’t survive. Wayne’s explained how the world works and Eddie has been on the receiving end of pain from humans before he kills them. He’s aware he’s othered so as much as he would like to run ashore and find her, he’d be dead and unable to protect her.

He’s definitely sulking in his den. He’s collected a lot of things over the years. There’s pieces of trash he’s found in the river that interest him. A radio that she’d gotten working, something someone had with them and lost while they were tubing one summer. He’s found gold teeth in mouths before that he hangs on to because they’re shiny. Rocks and bones and the occasional fossil or geode. He’s got a lock of her hair she’d given him, tied up in a thin piece of grass. There’s little things she’s left that he keeps safe with the radio and he’ll sulk with that.

Sometimes she comes back smelling like so many things. Strange scents he’s never encountered and numerous people and it sets his teeth on edge. He wants to remind her that she should only ever smell like her and him. He knows she’ll be back, she’s already promised it and let him mark her so she knows, she has to, that when she comes back smelling like all the others he’s going to fix that. Maybe he plays a little hiding game when she shows back up. Lays low in the tall grass along the edge to watch her search around. He’ll run a claw over her toes when she gets to close to make her jump. He does like scaring her sometimes, likes the way her heart rate spikes because he can almost taste the sharp scent she gives off.

Getting down to your last few questions I will say at the beginning when they’re becoming acquainted and Wayne is explaining things Eddie is very wary. She smells like a mate but she’s human so what the fuck? She’s never once terrified of him, just wary. She holds her hands out to him like he couldn’t pull her right in and kill her. So he’s standoffish. Doesn’t come fully out of the water for a while. He doesn’t understand who she is and why she smells the way she does and why she makes him care, but that changes very quickly when she willingly gets in his water with him.

I know this went a different way a bit, but again, you asked some real deep questions for me and I don’t want to give a lot away yet. But yeah. Eddie loves her and once he’s claimed her he won’t turn her away for anything.
