Tumblr media
Yesterday, wandering around here on Tumblr, I found another post about how Eristine fans (like me) prove to have absolutely no understanding of Gaston Leroux's original work.
Tumblr media
Because we do not see how wonderfully perfect - and more importantly how absolutely healthy as a choice, for Christine - is Raoul de Chagny.
Tumblr media
The post then concluded with a clear victorious note establishing how - given the canonicity of Raoul/Christine - this paring was obviously right.
Well, if you will allow me, I would like to respond to that post - by saying that yes, it is quite true.
Tumblr media
In fact, everyone knows that:
sneaking - uninvited! - into a person’s dressing room and expecting everyone to leave to be left alone with an unconscious young woman is healthy;
waiting, once - rightly so! - being dismissed from the dressing room by said young woman, in a dark recess, for her to be alone in order to “get back at it” with an unsolicited courtship is healthy;
getting jealous when you hear her talking to a man, to the point - literally! - to becoming enraged and beginning to regard her as a prostitute is healthy;
entering her dressing room in her absence to see who she was daring (!) to talk to is healthy;
following her when she leaves Paris, raging when she apparently rejects your affections and - again! - practically calling her a prostitute when she tries to explain about the Angel of Music is healthy;
escaping through a window so that the innkeeper doesn't see you stalking the young woman in the middle of the night - again without her knowledge - to find out if it is true that she is going to pay her respects at her father’s grave, or if it is just an excuse to meet another man, is healthy;
questioning anyone who knows anything about her and her private life - even though she has clearly expressed her intention to break off your relationship (of friendship, let’s clarify! There is no engagement, secret or otherwise) - and even going so far as to show up at her home - again, uninvited! - to “put the screws” on his elderly and ailing foster mother, suggesting to her that the said young woman is (guess what? Bravo!) almost a prostitute just because she has not yet fallen at your feet, smitten in love with a spoiled child, is healthy;
“ambushing” the carriage in which the young woman travels, so that you can confront face to face the man with whom she dared to cheat on you (?!?), ending up for the umpteenth time considering her a prostitute “who led you on” (again, what?!?) is healthy;
considering her a saint or a whore depending on the time of day is healthy;
offending and humiliating her (accusing her, as is now ritual, of being the worst of whores) when she tries to explain to you, at the masquerade ball, what has happened to her and is still happening to her is healthy;
slipping - once again! - uninvited into her dressing room, spying on her as she writes a private letter, and even managing to rage when she seems to show pity for someone who is not you is healthy;
showing up - uninvited of course - at the young woman’s home, accusing her of not being herself, of being naive and a person completely incapable of judging the people around her, trying to get her to promise that she will never go out without you again, even managing to become enraged when she refuses to reveal the name of the “man who had the audacity to put a gold ring on her finger,” and her response to the proposal that certainly came with the ring is healthy;
taking seriously a fake engagement (which has very little secret about it, since the “third wheel in the triangle” himself urges the young woman to engage in it), and firmly claiming to turn it into a marriage - despite the fact that over and over and over again the young woman has told you that she has no intention of marrying you, and that yours is a game - is healthy…
Tumblr media
Just tell me: should I continue? Because I don’t know how you feel about it, but it never seemed to me that Raoul was so much “the best choice” at the end of the day…
(To be clear: Erik has not a few problems and flaws, but at least he was honest and never claimed to be a "healthy choice'... and no honest Eristine fan would ever say that).
Tumblr media
As for the "canonical = perfect" argument... I would like to remind you that Hades/Persephone is also canonical, yet everything is but a happy couple riding off into the sunset, so...
Tumblr media
(P.S. I can no longer find the original post, so I would like to apologize to @textsfromthefifthbasement for using her screenshot).
(P.S. part 2: Thanks to @brendadaaedestler for pointing out how I needed to... "express out loud" this analysis of mine of the real 'healthiness' of Raoul de Chagny's character.)

Sara Ellisague, a talented musician and singer, is on the brink of a new chapter in her life as she leaves behind the National Institute of Music to pursue a role in the prestigious Opera Garnier of Paris. However, her excitement is tempered by the rumors of a dark entity haunting the opera house. Undeterred by superstition, Sara remains steadfast in her resolve to pursue her dreams, ready to embark on this new journey despite the uncertainties that lie ahead.
I'm currently writing a fanfic in Ao3 about the phantom of the opera!
A good Erik Destler x Reader/OC so that we can all experience what it's like to be loved by a gothic obsessive gentleman.
I'm only two chapters in but I'm really enjoying writing this story :D

I think its really interesting that at the end of the book Raoul and Christine running away is phrased as if they are escaping from society's judgement, especially from the rumor mill around the De Changy's, whether the rumor that Raoul killed Philippe, or shock that he married someone poor. I feel like too many adaptations compartmentalize the "society is the true villain" to be just about Erik, when it's a running theme with Raoul and Christine too!

Masquerade
ectoberweek23 day 29- masquerade TW- none summary- It's time for Casper's annual musical
ao3 masterlist
Phantom of the opera au
The Phantom-Danny Christine Daae-Sam Raoul, Vicomte de Changy-Kwan Carlotta Giudicelli-Paulina Meg- Valerie Vlad- director Wes-stage manager
Sam ran through her lines again and practiced her solos. If this show went well she could get college scholarships. She just had to make sure to nail down the part.
Valerie knocked on the dressing room door. “Wes is calling for everyone onstage.”
Sam rolled her eyes. “How did he even get the role of stage manager?”
Val shrugged. “Your guess is as good as mine. Though he’s better than Vlad.”
Sam wrinkled her nose. “It still doesn’t make sense why the principal is our director. He wasn’t even involved in the drama department before now.”
“At least we have a director, after Mrs. Elmary left, I didn't know if there would still be a program.”
“Hmm. Well, we better get on stage before Wes starts yelling like he did last week.”
As they got on stage, Paulina glared at Sam for a moment before turning away.
“She still mad at you?” Val whispered. “Yeah.”
“It’s not your fault, she was too much of a drama queen to accept the part.”
“Well, she wanted the part; she just didn’t want Kwan to be Raoul. She wanted the part to go to Dash.”
“But he’s not even that good of an actor.”
Sam shrugged. “I’ll just be glad when it’s over and i don’t have to deal with her ‘accidentally’ bumping into me backstage anymore.”
“Quiet everyone!” Wes called. “Please focus your attention on our incredible director.”
“Thank you, Wes.” Vlad said. “As you all know, tonight is opening night. You have all worked very hard and I am sure you will put on a wonderful show. But don’t forget that you still need to work for this. You’ve put in too much effort to slack off now. Remember to be quiet backstage, and Paulina please don’t walk center stage during the Masquerade scene. We want the focus to be on Sam.” Paulina huffed. “Okay, We’ve got an hour before the house opens so everyone get backstage and finish your final preparations. Break a leg everyone.”
They moved backstage and Sam took a seat at one of the couches in the green room.
Tucker came up and sat next to her.
“Shouldn’t you be in the lighting booth?”
“Nah, i’ve still got time. Besides,” he reached over to the side table and grabbed some of the cheese and crackers from the snack tray. “There’s no food allowed up there.”
They sat in silence for a moment before he continued. “You ready?”
“I think so. Yes. I’ve got this.”
Tucker smiled at her. “I’m sure you’ll do great.”
Sam scowled. “Of course I will. You just better do your part right.”
Tucker laughed. “There’s the Sam I know. Not afraid of anything. Though,” Tucker fidgeted nervously. “You’re not afraid of the ghost?”
“Ghosts aren’t real, Tucker.”
“Well how else would you explain all the things that have been going wrong? And there’s been threats! Do you really believe that James falling from the catwalk was just an accident? And there’s always been rumors…”
“You know James likes to mess around, he probably just wasn't careful. And he’ll be fine. He just broke his leg.”
“But what about the threats?”
“I’m pretty sure those are just Blad trying to get more publicity.”
“Wes believes them.”
Sam rolled her eyes. “Wes will believe anything.”
Tucker slouched. “True.”
“Trust me, everything will be fine.”
“I guess.”
“Thirty minutes!” called one of the assistant stage managers.
“Thank thirty!” Everyone chorused.
“I guess I better get to the lighting booth.
“See you after the show.”
----------------
It was nearing intermission and so far everything was going smoothly. Tucker supposed that Sam had been right. He cracked his knuckles as he prepared for the Masquerade scene which had a series of several quick light changes.
He hit them all with little difficulty.
He went to the next lighting cue as Sam and Kwan started dancing center stage. He was about to go to the next one when all of the lights went out.
There were some screams from the audience and Tucker cursed as he tried to figure out what had happened.
Then something near the ceiling of the theatre started glowing. It looked like a person. Their face was indistinct. Tucker stared, frozen where he stood.
Then the glowing figure dove down toward the stage, the figure’s glow being the only thing shedding any light in the dark theatre.. There were more screams and actors tried to scramble off stage, but in the chaos most of them ended up tripping over each other. Sam had backed away, but her foot had caught on her dress and she’d fallen.
The figure, the ghost, dove down toad Sam and as soon as it touched her it disappeared, plunging everythinginto darkness
A moment later teh stage lights came back on.
The ghost was gone.
And so was Sam.

ANONYMOUS PENNED: 💭 Raoul de changy
SEND 💭 + A TOPIC AND MY MUSE WILL TELL YOU WHAT THEY THINK ABOUT IT.
Tumblr media
" THAT moronic de Chagny boy embodies nearly everything I despise. He is a privileged fop that has had his every infantile desire fed to him by a silver spoon. He has never had to struggle and suffer in order to survive, and is the same as every gosse de riche among his ranks. "
" WHAT'S more, his " love " for Christine is nothing but a temporary infatuation. I do not blame him for falling in love with her voice, but he was not the one who nurtured and inspired it. He is not the one who has been her comfort and confident in her loneliness, who has remained by her side ever since she entered the opera house. He could never understand the bond we share, nor the importance music holds to the both of us. It is our very lifeblood, and an imbecile that can barely hum a tune would never understand that. "

The (Abridged) Story of Ask Erik!
Although Ask Erik! is a separate universe from Erscoga and a thorough understanding of Ask Erik! is not needed, much of Nalitie's history happened in Ask Erik! and has influenced her life in Erscoga. This post presents a heavily summarized history of events from Ask Erik! because the original stories for these are VERY long, tedious, and written by middle schoolers and thus often don't make very much sense.
~•*•~
Once upon a time, there was a girl named Log_Lady. One day, a man named Erik and his son, Gustave, found themselves in her home. They did not know how they got there, and both were extremely disoriented--they had leap ahead more than a century in time, into our strange, modern land.
Eventually, Erik and Gustave would find themselves accustomed to life in 201X. Log_Lady would invite fellow members of the Wattpad multiverse to ask Erik and Gustave questions, as the two had gained quite the fan base.
And thus, the Ask Erik Universe was born. People flocked here from all around. A person named Sam inhabited the universe and was married to Raoul De Changy (1); Nalitie and her husband, Willy Wonka lived there too. The two became very prominent figures in the Ask Erik Universe, and befriend Log_Lady and her house guests (who would eventually become her fiancé and future son). With the citizens came a whole world, comprised of several significant places.
One of first places to be established, besides Sam, Nalitie, and Log_Lady’s houses, was Green Circle Labs, a place which cultivated the growth of new dimensions and attempted to keep them from leading to their own self-destruction. They were also the ones who prevented the death of a miss Christine Daae (2). She was moved from her dimension and into the home of Nalitie, where she met Steven, who would eventually be her husband.
The next significant place to be enstated was Nalitie’s VR room (3). Here, she created her own miniseries… Within a miniseries. This would really only lead to lots of unnecessary trauma.
The next places to come into play were the Broken Age Universe (home of the Voltas and Tartines), the Mind Core, a place where the memories of every citizen would be stored, and TreeGrass Institutes (4), a place whose goal was the opposite of Green Circle Labs’s--conformity to the storyline.
Life was typically peaceful, save for the occasional war, or kidnapping, or missing person (10), or other form of destruction.
Sam would learn that they're a Time Lord (5). A man named Dave would enter the storyline (6). Sam would be pregnant (7). Roxy Rosewell would help a humanized fish take over the world and make things safe. Rosabelle and the concept of theoretical future children would be created (8). Kaytee, Kathrine, and Samara would become prominent villains (9). Dukermin would enter the picture (11).
Eventually, an event that would become known as “Attack of the Sams” happened. The Overmother came into creation, as well as her planet, Coloria (12). Her daughters, Malvolia and Evangeline came with her, and Steven was found (and eventually lost again). But it is possible that all of this was a dream. Around the same time, an event known as “The Battle of the Four Armies Volume II” (13) occurred as well, and resulted in Sam being married to two men (Raoul and Marek). The ID-PD (Interdimensional Police Department) destroyed the world multiple times, but Sam brought it back each time until they finally destroyed the timeline for good (14). No one knows where the timeline was restored to.
Eventually, however, this event caused Dukermin and Nalitie to realize that some powers (mainly Sam) had become far too powerful for their own good. Sam had delayed their pregnancy until it reached a full year (and eventually ceased altogether, without any traces, as if it had been a Lost Timeline). The universe could be reset on a whim, and there were no consequences to any actions.
Dukermin and Nalitie fled to search Interdimensional Space for a new home--thus, Erscoga was born. Marek was divorced from Sam, and any trace of the two was (very sloppily) erased from the Ask Erik Universe.
(Citations under the cut.)
~•*•~
The following chapters can be found scattered between Nalitie, Log_Lady, and Sam's Ask Erik! Universe-related books. However, they're very long and rambling, so the important bits are summarized here.
(1) - The Battle of the Four Armies (and then some)
During this portion of the Ask Erik timeline, Sam, Log_Lady, and Nalitie are fighting over whether or not Sam should marry Raoul… Or more of Log_Lady and Nalitie want Sam to marry Raoul, and Sam doesn't want to.
This was the first war of the Ask Erik world, and was fought with the various armies of their world. Phangirls (extreme Phantom of the Opera fans who are girls) joined the battle as well. Eventually, Log_Lady and Nalitie just tied up Sam and Raoul and locked them in the living room together. They bonded with Sesame Street, potatoes, cheese, pancakes, water bottles, and a game of truth or dare that ended in Raoul eating worms and puking everywhere.
(2) - Christine?!?!/THE WAR CAUSED BECAUSE I “KIDNAPPED” CHRISTINE
In this, Nalitie reveals that she and the folks at Green Circle Labs have messed with the dimensions and prevented Christine’s death in Love Never Dies. Christine was then brought back to the Ask Erik! world and taken into Nalitie's care. Sam, outraged by this news, kidnapped Christine (mainly just to talk). Nalitie attacked Sam’s house. Sam refused to leave their bunker, which they had locked themself and Christine into, until Nalitie convinced them by stabbing Raoul in the shoulder.
Log_Lady got involved too, attempting to keep Christine away from her fiancé, Erik, as she believed that Erik would become enamoured with Christine again. Eventually, though, after the involvement of Sweeney Todd, Christine was released and Steven proposed. Nalitie also accidentally poisoned herself. She left to recover, and that's where the story ended.
(3) - Welcome to “Let’s Play Throw People Into Random Situations That They are Unfamiliar With”
This miniseries has multiple episodes. In the first, the concept of a Virtual Reality situation randomizer is solidified (Sam is thrown through various worlds of fiction). During the second, Sam is the host, and much trauma ensues. It is revealed that Willy Wonka is Nalitie’s husband, and that he has a disguise personality (Gary). He can also turn into a bracelet. Magic crayons, which can heal, disguise, and alter voices are introduced, and Dave (originally an incidental character). During episode 2 ½, Nalitie sets out to find Dave (whose VR iteration died in episode 2). Unimportant stuff happens, but eventually Dave becomes Nalitie's housemate???
(4) - Lost Timeline and Then Some
TreeGrass was first introduced as a part of a Lost Timeline (something that was written but that we decided wasn't canon).
During part 1 of the Lost Trilogy Timeline, Sam was stormed over to Nalitie’s house, demanding to see Raoul, since Nalitie and Log_Lady had taken him to dress him up like Mermaid Man. When Sam got to Nalitie’s house, Nalitie’s guards were waiting for them with SuperPower Flash Cameras™. One by one, however, Nalitie’s guards failed and Kathrine, Kaytee, and Samara showed up in the aftermath (some convoluted scheme?). Sam was restrained, and Samara cut Sam’s baby out of their womb, placing it in her own. Samara believed that, when Sam got pregnant, it made her child, Douglas, disappear (it was never mentioned whether or not this was truly the case). Nalitie returned to find Kaytee, Kathrine, and Samara gone, and Sam lying in a pool of blood. Nalitie brought Sam to Green Circle Labs to be healed.
All of the Lost Timelines focus on this concept in some way: for example, in one Lost Ending, Log_Lady intervenes before Samara can hurt Sam and the entire thing is revealed to have been a dream anyway. (Erik also meets some family members from an alternate reality.) In another version of the story, Kaytee, Kathrine, and Samara terrorize Sam and a bunch of unimportant and confusing stuff happens, and it turns out everything was a dream anyway. The last piece of media from this deals with the aftermath of those very traumatic dreams, as well as establishing that Sam Authored those timelines into existence in Insedit, leading to a bunch of hallucinations. The most important takeaways from this whole "Trilogy" were TreeGrass Institutes becoming a big villain (Authored by Nalitie) in Ask Erik!, it being revealed that Sam was pregnant with twins, and that the 5 Dimensions of Imagination exist (Guarded by Elma in the Centrum).
(5) - THE BIG REVEAL
This chapter of the original Ask Erik! focused around Sam discovering that they were they were a Time Lord related to The Doctor. It is unclear if this is still canon.
(6) - Miniseries Episode 2/Miniseries Episode 2 1/2
In Miniseries Episode 2, an incidental character named Dave is introduced as a VR-generated NPC and dies. In Episode 2 1/2, Nalitie seeks out his real-life counterpart and throws a funeral or something. It's mostly unimportant and Broken-Age centric, but this chapter establishes Dave as an important character (although it's unclear how he came to live in Nalitie's house?) and is the first time Nalitie's "Vent Hole" is mentioned. (The Vent Hole is a location in Nalitie's house where she has a few holding cells, an old computer, and a bunker.)
(7) - CUTE LOVEY DOVEY COUPLES SONGS
The exact contents of this chapter are unimportant other than the fact that this was when Sam’s pregnancy was announced. Sam's character was pregnant for over a year before this plot point was abandoned/retconned out. The illogical nature of this 2-year pregnancy was the catalyst for Nalitie and Dukermin creating Erscoga. Additionally, the two babies became Deleted Characters who Nalitie later retrieved from The Void.
(8) - OH THE FORE- NEVERMIND
Sam is imprisoned by Roxy Rosewell (along with Nalitie and Vella, from Broken Age), who serves Darwin from The Amazing World of Gumball in what's basically the plot from the episode "The Safety" but with the involement of Loruna from Broken Age... somehow. This chapter is mostly nonsensical filler, but establishes the bunker/fallout shelter in Nalitie's Vent Hole (alluding to Nalitie's interdimensional knowledge), as well as Rosabelle, Nalitie's "theoretical future child." Technically, this was supposed to occur before the Lost Trilogy (4), despite being written afterwards.
(9) - I Honestly Don't Know What to Call This/Miniseries Episode 3
Although TreeGrass Institutes was originally introduced in the Lost Trilogy (4), that was a set of deleted chapters that was not posted until way after the fact. "I Honestly Don't Know What to Call This" was their "canon" introduction, so to speak, and involved Nalitie's body being taken over by a character named "Marya," an alternate version of Marek from Broken Age. Marya convinced Sam to release Kaytee, Kathrine, and Samara from Nalitie's Vent Hole detention center. This happened before (8).
In Nalitie's third Miniseries episode, she throws Vella and Shay from Broken Age into random situations (again, mostly filler), but a power surge in the VR room caused by Kaytee, Kathrine, and Samara makes things go haywire. In trying to fix things, Nalitie shorts out the VR room computer, causing Vella and Shay to be stuck in a nightmarish VR situation, unaware of reality. Kaytee shows up to threaten Nalitie (as a disembodied voice), before leaving.
(10) - Missing
At some point in 2016 IDST, Nalitie put out a missing poster for Steven, her brother/housemate. I don't remember what this was supposed to lead into anymore, but whatever that plot point was got abandoned when Erscoga was created.
(11) - Random Weirdness 4
Nalitie introduces Dukermin and throws her into random situations, except the VR room is supposedly broken from the shenanigans in the previous miniseries episode. Nalitie drives Dukermin to "The Ocean," an old theatre that she uses as a safe house. Marek once again takes over someone's body (this time Hope, Shay's mother), except not really because the VR room was NOT broken and this has been a VR situation all along. A creepy song begins playing and Nalitie panicks, as this means Kaytee has returned to terrorize them once again; Nalitie and Dukermin get captured. Nalitie's bracelet, "Gary," is actually Willy Wonka for some reason and helps them escape, and some more stupid stuff happens... Nalitie's house supposedly catches on fire because the VR room exploded, but it turns out that the entire chapter was happening in VR as a "situation nobody was familiar with."
(12) - Attack of the Sams/Untitled Part 195
Nalitie mourns Dave, who is very much alive and living in her house. Sam comes to visit after some Shenanigans went down in the larger Ask Erik! universe including "Weirdmageddon," "continuous posession," and "twin Time Lord antichrists." Anyway, The Overmother (the being who runs Coloria) kidnaps Sam and a bunch of unimportant stuff happens.
But basically, The Overmother believes that Sam is her long-lost child, who she has been continuously trying to replicate (hence why Coloria is full of Sams) and tries to get Sam to become the next ruler of Coloria or something. The Overmother also has two other children, Evangeline and Malvolia and Malvolia is evil for some reason. Nalitie dies at some point, but gets brought back to life by Sam in a later chapter? Christine gives up her child (Tobias, turned Tasha by Nalitie) to try to save Sam. The Fourth Wall gets broken a lot... Honestly, these chapters are like 200 pages long combined, and I didn't read them all, and it's possible that all of this was a dream/VR anyway.
The biggest takeaways were these: Coloria was established as a planet that existed in Ask Erik! somewhere, and it was ruled by The Overmother. The Overmother has Sam clones, for some reason. She's also Steven's biological mother. Tobias existed here at one point, and this Tobias is the toddler-aged Tobias (also known as Bee or T) that Nalitie retrieved from The Void. Also, the concept of people "merging" (similar to fusion in Steven Universe, but with less emotional relevance) is introduced.
(13) - Random Weirdness 5/Battle of the Four Armies Volume II
Nalitie brings Sam in or another Miniseries Episode or something, and naturally it goes off the rails for about a hundred pages. Nalitie attempts to marry Sam to Marek, which causes Sam to start another war. Nalitie attempts to force Marek to play The Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera while Sam plays Christine. This goes on for a long time. Marek goes off-script and ACTUALLY marries Sam. Nalitie breaks the Fourth Wall (literally) and the ID-PD comes in to quarantine and delete the timeline.
(14) - Battle of the Four Armies Volume II (again)/Battle of the Four Armies 2.5
Sam brings the timeline back from destruction... somehow. However, they did a sloppy job of it and everyone's bodies and voices and personalities are mixed up. Nalitie tinkers with the Wattpad site's code and fixes stuff, and also messes up a bunch of stuff. Things go off the rails again for a while until the IDPD Special Forces return to destroy the timeline (again). It doesn't work fully, though, and everyone wakes up to Nalitie saying there was a weird pulse in the VR room and everyone passed out. Nalitie sets up ANOTHER wedding for Marek and Sam, for some reason. Nalitie and Sam have a lightsaber fight some reason, and it seems like Nalitie might be involved with Star Wars somehow...?
Anyway, Sam kidnaps Marek later on, and Christine has gone missing for some reason. Kaytee comes back to torment everyone, and characters from Ask Erik! past come to make things complicated, including Roxy Rosewell and The Overmother. Things get weird in ways that don't matter (although a being known as a "Ruw Eyeah" shows up at one point, and Ruw Eyeah is the current primary language on Lux, developed from an unknown source). Anyway, the IDPD destroy the timeline for real. It is unknown where the timeline reverts back to before Nalitie and Dukermin create Erscoga—possibly all the way back to just after "Attack of the Sams."
