Being able to talk about liking problematic characters on here is soooo different that other places.
Cause I could say “I love Debbie and Karen” on here and people would say “same girl , they deserved so much better 🩷 I hate how the writers treated them”
But If I say that on TikTok or Reddit people will be like “you’re fucking crazy and a rapist I hope you DIE 😡😡😡😡”

So weird that DC' solution on "empowering" Babs in the Killing joke adaptation was giving her a weird subplot that let Bruce Timm do his weird and gross shit. Worst part was that it didn't even matter in the end since you could cut all that stuff and nothing would change. Here's a silly idea for DC, maybe make it so Joker was originally intending to shoot Jim but Babs managed to push her dad out of the way to save him while also getting rid of the gross shit Joker did to her. Or better yet, don't bother making the film at all if not even Alan Moore likes in retrospect.
Women being abused/killed/r'ped/tortured for the sake of a man's character development has been a common trope since ancient Greek tragedies. Its old as dirt and its been picked apart over the years for the blatant misogyny it is. Killing Joke is the prime example of this as Batgirl was crippled and assaulted in the original story all so Joker can torture her father and make Batman angry
And I find it utterly hilarious how DC tried to empower Batgirl in the animated movie by giving a renowned pervert a chance to canonise his gross surrogate uncle/niece ship with Batman and Batgirl and have her hunt down one skeezy thug, instead of oh i dunno ACTUALLY HAVE HER DO MORE CRIMEFIGHTING THAN HUNTING DOWN ONE INCEL WHO PISSED HER OFF THAT DAY.
To be honest, the idea of Batman's found family being used as torture bait for the sake of drama and tension is an idea that really only works in very small circumstances. Like they only work if its men getting tortured. The only people who would animate a woman getting shot at or tortured is a pervert who just likes women getting beaten up. Yes, men being tortured is just as bad but women arent constantly oggled by the camera in every story ever made and theres enough perverts in the comic book industry as it is!
Women getting gratutiously tortured is gross. No one in their right mind should EVER put that in the story, even if its the villain doing it.
Characters getting tortured or abused for the sake of another character's development is a very tricky trope to pull off and its not recommended to anyone writing a dramatic story. Cos torture scenes should only last a couple seconds, not thirty minutes. And it shouldnt even be the crux of the story, it should be an effect. Not the cause.
So, DC, if you want to do a story of Joker mentally torturing someone to get under Batman's skin, instead of torturing a woman like Barbara or a child like Tim Drake, why not Alfred? Commissioner Gordon? Heck, one of Batman's lesser villains?
TLDR: DC, stop making torture porn stories of women like Barbara Gordon getting crippled and then giving a bs subplot to empower her by fetishising her even more

No shade to what Vivzie’s done (except the rape “joke” which I’ll forever be pissed and shade her and other writers for) but I can’t get over how the pilot was better, especially with the videos that are still coming out!
Like what sort of, if any, behind-the-curtain meddling was there?
Did they panic with only eight episodes?
How could they not think people would be HAPPIER with the entire first eight episodes covering the pilot and character introductions. People had been waiting like five years, if they were fed and fed well, they’d be on the edge of their seats for more. Like I have concern.
With everything happening recently, how could they not realize that people PREFER good storytelling and character development over a bunch of halfassed shit thrown together? Especially with how many people on the net LOVE pulling that shit apart. That’s why it’d be hard for me to believe she wasn’t pushed to including all these “awesome, cool, action packed” ideas from whoever was above her at Amazon bc these showrunner people think we’re all toddlers somehow. Not to mention how LONG she’s had to refine her ideas.
A ONCE reworked original story or fanfic can be SO GOOD, so IMPROVED… then you look at this professional series…. Like what happened???
Also, so one of the “controversies” of Vivzie is that Voodoo (which Alistor is associated with) is a closed practice and deemed such by the people practicing/familiar with it. Closed practices aren’t just “-suddenly cordoned-off religions, that doesn’t make any sense,” it’s a lot deeper than that. Educate yourself. Back to the point, were there no people acquainted with this practice in writing?—I know he hasn’t “done anything” with it yet, but the symbols are present every time he does his magic thing. It feels weird to me anyway to just through a bunch of symbols in without understanding the significance. I’m the guy that cringes at ancient Egypt stuff that has a bunch of hieroglyphs somewhere just to have the symbolism, half of which are just doodles fifty percent of the time.

"I Remember it so you don't have to": MCU Loki in the 2010s: Rape Culture, Villain Queer-coding, and Homophobia
-----------------------
I know Loki is Tumblr’s sweetheart since 2011 (and that subsets of Loki fans are insufferable, fuck those that harassed and singled out Kate Herron and Sophia Di Martino because Sylvie). But a part of me will always be protective of the character outside of Tumblr despite his popularity. I hate seeing bad takes about how Odin was a wonderful father and king, and Loki was just an ungrateful bastard.
Although Tumblr (and many AO3 fics) seem to excuse Loki of all wrongdoings (letting the Frost Giants in and the attempted genocide), I see the opposite outside of it, where he even gets blamed for Hela getting out of her imprisonment. And I have seen a horrible take saying that he should have been left to die as a baby because “he ruined Thor’s life” by some Odin apologist that clearly lied about liking Loki. So he seems to be quite polarizing in that respect based on social media of choice and demographic of users. And some people get a little weird about the Loki hate because how dare you like the sympathetic villain that isn't as masculine as the heroes (I will go more in detail and show some examples).
My hot take on Loki's moral fibre: I just see MCU!Loki as not particularly morally worse (or better) than MCU!Thor, but he just had worse luck in timing and who he ended up with during those badly-timed breakdowns.
I joke around that I defend Loki from Redditors and dudebros because I especially dislike the takes of cishet men that get offended when a girl said she preferred Loki over Thor, and pretend to be “concerned” over “impressionable young women and girls that will get into abusive relationships”. And if you haven’t seen those, well I did while growing up, and I took them personally.
The Nostalgia Critic, one of the men behind the death of media literacy and criticism, even made a video complaining about the phenomenon of Loki thirst. It made me spitefully not care about any other Avengers (2012) character. It’s still up on YouTube, and it was a bit patronizing. Also, he thinks Thor 1 Thor looks like a girl (joke?), make of that what you will...
youtube
There was also a propensity to make homophobic jokes about Loki in parody skits. Loki was not canonically queer yet in either the movies or the comics, but he was queer-coded and people could tell, based on the jokes and quips directed at him. There’s one parody skit where Thor and Loki go to court-appointed therapy and one of the jokes is that Loki likes to fuck himself with bananas or “plantains because they’re bigger.” One of the worst parody skits was The Key of Awesome’s Thor:TDW parody.

Loki is put into a “normal” prison instead of the “glowy” kind he kept escaping from. The main joke was Loki getting raped in prison. And that now he can’t act all “haughty” about Thor’s request for help, and is instead the "desperate" one. And you’ll see some old comments over how hilarious that is. And people arguing about how weak or powerful Loki is and bringing the Norse myth about him being raped by a horse into it as proof that the terrible “joke” makes sense and could happen in cannon.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
An example that almost made it into the screen is a deleted scene in Thor Ragnarok that I refer to as “the director’s barely disguised fetish”, where instead of falling for 30 minutes, Loki gets locked in a portable restroom while men continuously enter to piss. Loki’s trying his best not to get pissed on. Thor opens the stall giggling, and of course Loki is rightfully angry about being trapped there. It seems to veer into the “bad guys deserve sexual assault as punishment” to an uncomfortable degree.

I often just keep quiet on MCU Loki defense discourse because:
1. Loki is a popular character with many defenders.
2. Subsets of Loki fans are ridiculous and use false pretenses to harass writers and actors. And the discourse that arises from this is mind-numbing and pointless.
But I remember all this crap from the early 2010s, and I am not fond of Loki being deemed "Just evil, whiny, and ungrateful". There’s also the very questionable tropes from earlier Thor comics (hell some of these should ellicit WAY more backlash than Sylki if you really care that much about rep). I also don’t like being told what characters I should and shouldn’t like, and I have taken that personally ever since.
A part of me feels a bit unintentionally gaslighted when people act like there was no backlash to Loki being popular. It has the same vibes as the increduloulity of Gen Z regarding how BAD homophobia in the 2000s and early 2010s was.

wading into dangerous discourse territory. this post (now unrebloggable and unreplyable) bothered me. there is a false equivalence being drawn here.
the rape joke comedians in the example dialogue are punching down. rape and noncon and dubcon fic writers are not punching in any direction; they are exploring. if we had to give it a direction, it would be lateral. this makes all the difference. rape, as we know, is about power.
the for-profit art of shitty white reactionary adult men is fundamentally not equivalent to the art made by teenagers, women, and queer folks, within a wide range of race and cultural background and disability and genders and etc etc., all of which is made and shared for free. comparing the two in this way— assuming OP is not actually being disingenuous or manipulative— betrays a lack of understanding of the power dynamics and the social reality we live in.
an additional point about power: purity tests, like the challenge leveled by the OP, are never actually aimed at the fuckasses who make shitty comedy (and worse pornography!). we all already know they don’t give a shit. they’re too busy snorting coke and watching lines go up and down in their crypto wallets. they’re invulnerable.
this type of internet shaming and scaremongering— “your rape fantasy is evil and so are you”— is only ever weaponized against the less powerful and more marginalized. it is only ever aimed at the people who would, actually, really worry about hurting someone else.
the result is that we silence and shame our own community, and no one else.
can punching laterally dismantle rape culture?
is it helping? i don’t feel like it is.
