The language of flowers, or floriography, is a form of cryptology in which flowers and floral arrangements are used to communicate sentiments and send messages. Floral dictionaries, which sought to help readers interpret the language of flowers, reached peak popularity in the mid-19th century, riding the waves of the gift book market between the 1820s and the 1860s.
This poem is from Charlotte de laTour's Langage des Fleur, one of the first floral dictionaries, originally published in 1819.

Happy Birthday to Harriet Beecher Stowe, abolitionist and author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, born on this day in 1811. Her best-selling novel, first published in 1852, popularized the anti-slavery movement and is said to have helped pave the way for the Civil War.
Pictured: Albumen print of Stowe ca. 1870, and the front cover of the 1852 edition of Uncle Tom's Cabin published by John P. Jewett & Company.

Pleased to add another George Scarbrough book to the collection. “Invitation to Kim” was a finalist for the 1990 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry. The East Tennessee native produced three books between 1949-1956, which each contain some of the finest southern poetry I’ve read. “Invitation to Kim” is part of his later work and was published in 1989. I have posted his poem “Postcard Woodcut” here for a sampling of his work. Thank you to @thebookeddy for this copy, signed and inscribed in Fine condition. A rare hardback copy. #georgescarbrough #invitationtokim #pulitzerprize #irispress #rarebooks #firstedition #bookcollection #bookcollecting #bookcollection #bibliophile #bookporn #bookhunting #bookstagram #modernfirsts #modernfirsteditions #finebooks #signedbooks #shelfie #southernliterature #southernlit #tennessee #appalachianlit #appalachianliterature #kentucky #northcarolina #virginia #westvirginia #appalachianpoetry https://www.instagram.com/p/CP9OU7FsEzw/?utm_medium=tumblr

We are celebrating National Garden Week with these wonderful woodcuts from The Gardeners Labyrinth. Originally published in 1577, this popular gardening manual covered everything from seed selection to watering to landscaping, and also included a section on the medicinal and health benefits of some plants.
