word count: 2.3k
“maybe we need time to figure ourselves out first?” venus said, bouncing her leg and looking at the ground. “i just know that i wanted to make sure i had everything in line so i could focus on you, focus on us.”
matthew nodded, resting his head on her shoulder. “you’re right. i need to get used to this whole nhl world, and you deserve the time of finishing school and finding your perfect internship.” she smiled at him, appreciating his understanding of her proposal.
“promise me that you won’t forget me, yeah? if life really changes when we go our own ways, and maybe you meet new people… just know that i loved you so much. and i’ll support whatever it is that you choose to do.” venus nodded as matthew spoke, her eyes getting blurred with the many tears that began to build up.
venus knew it was going to be hard to let him go. not have him even in those few minutes of free time the two of them had. though all the while she knew it was best, that a better relationship would come with time. she wanted matthew, and she hoped that even with any circumstances that would arise, she was going to do everything to have him by her side one day or another.
“i’ll say the same thing to you” she says, letting out a small laugh. he looks at her with melancholic eyes, “oh baby, i won’t forget your sweet sweet face”
they were phantom fingertips. ones that knew all the places, all the ways to make one crumble under their touch. they were ones that venus knew all too well, ones she pictured for all those years. the ones she ached for day by day. his soft lips, warm breath by her ear. “mine, all mine.”
she woke up, hearing that the plane would land in a few minutes. she sighed, relishing in the series of dreams she had throughout her nights. the ones she hadn’t stopped seeing since she was that 19 year old girl thinking if she made a mistake by letting him go. if maybe she needed him more than anything. if he was the only way she could function.
she’d be closer to him than ever today. closer to her fantasies when she stepped onto the ground that is calgary. she didn’t know if she should be excited or nervous. he could be far from the man she last saw. a girl already standing beside him. laughing in his ear with his arms wrapped around her tightly. she knew that they could always have started to make their own lives between the time apart.
though her thoughts were halted as the taxi dropped venus off at her parents house. a black g-wagon was parked on the driveway behind venus’ father’s car. she knew the meaning of the car to a particular someone but her mind flew past the fact that it was parked in her driveway. as she walked into her childhood home, she heard voices mingling further in.
“i’m here mom, dad!!” venus announced as she made her way to the kitchen. “my darling, you’re home!!” her mom greeted her with open arms. she smiled as her mother took in her presence. “your father is in the living room, why don’t you say hello” she says, venus nodded and made her way over. though her father swooped the girl into a hug before she’d even made it through the hall. “hello sweetie, so great to have you home now!” he says, “i’m so happy to be back! i’ve missed you both”
“why don’t you greet our guest in the living room” her father says. it wasn’t until he parted away that venus’ chocolate eyes widened at the sight of some untamed brown curls that belonged to the boy of her dreams. her heart began to race, she hadn’t seen his soft face for four years.
matthew’s eyes lit up at the sight of venus. her dark brown hair curled around her face beautifully. they both couldn’t help but smile. as he was about to greet her, before he could speak, venus couldn’t think of anything else to do but lunge in his arms. his warmth, scent, build and husky voice in her ears is what she daydreamed for years. for all one could say, it was her determination to complete her goals so she could come home to him. the one thing she was still missing.
“hi” she says, “hello love” he says, his blue eyes taking in the only person he’s had in his mind. though day after day he was still filled with doubt on whether or not she'd take any interest in him once she came home. if she’d found that perfect person for herself while matthew was away.
“matthew here was just visiting us as he usually does,” venus’ mother said, as she looked at the two of them. venus looked at matty, curious if he really made daily visits to her parents home. “but he has practice to head to, right matthew?”
“yes mrs. burkley.” he said, though he kept his eyes fixed on the girl who kept her hands tugging at his sweater. “i gotta go” he said quietly, venus nodded though didn’t make a move to back away from him. “will you still be joining us for dinner tonight?” mrs. burkley asked matty as he finally forced himself to move away from venus even though his whole body ached to hold her till he couldn’t no more. “of course,” he says, venus’ eyes bright at the proposal. “wouldn’t miss it for the world.”
around dinner time, matthew didn’t take long before arriving. he wore a dress shirt and some dress pants while venus decided to wear a summery-ish dress that flowed around with her every step. conversation consisted mostly of how perfectly venus’ internship - for a renowned advertising organization - was in new york. matty also shared his highlights of his career of being a professional hockey player for the flames.
though the both couldn't help but hint that everything was perfect except for a part of themselves. the part that knew not having each other made for everything not being enough to bring themselves to true satisfaction. that it wasn’t until they could lie together, legs tangled, bodies as close as humanly possible, and sharing all the sweet nothings that they longed to hear from one another. it isn’t until then, that their hearts would shine as purely, beat as naturally, as they should.
a few days had passed since venus’ initial arrival back home. matthew had asked her if she wished to go see one of his games. obviously saying yes maybe a bit too quick than she should’ve, matty sent her the tickets with a slight chuckle escaping his lips. she sat and watched that evening, seeing him skate as swiftly as he always did. before their time apart, she had only watched some of his rookie games when her uni schedule allowed her. though when she was away she’d taken a few nights to watch some of his games, but she had really forgotten how amazing the feeling of being in the arena with all the fans felt.
the game ended, as matthew and the flames won. she waited for him by the lockers, his teammates, old and new, greeted her with kind smiles. “glad you’ll keep him company now. he hasn’t stopped talking about you, it makes us sick.” one of them said to venus, she turned to the man before he walked away.
“wait, do you mean he doesn't have a girlfriend? like at all?” venus asked. even if early this morning she was looking back at all the signs of any possible care matty still has for her, her doubt couldn’t help but stick in her head and distort her thoughts. she wanted nothing more than to find out the truth, “i haven’t seen him even look in a girls direction.” he laughed a bit in which she smiled back.
“venus! how’d you like the game?” matty asked as he jogged to her. she smiled, “so fucking cool!! forgot how much i missed seeing a live game.” he grinned before taking her to his car in the large parking garage. “i have something planned out at my place, if you wanna come over?” matthew asked, fiddling on the steering wheel as they headed out to the nighttime streets of downtown calgary. “sure, i’d love that”
the ride wasn’t too long to matty’s place. venus took her time admiring the feel of exploring the semi empty streets of this beautiful city. the way she used to skip through the puddles of the spring rain and laugh with matthew by her side. snacking on something so mediocre that the two of them just couldn’t help it. matty could see her smile as she drifted through her thoughts, it couldn't help but make him all warm inside. but he thought about who it was that she was dreaming of? if it was the man who’s waiting for her back in new york?
they made their way inside matty’s place, where candles and a pre-prepared meal sat waiting for them. her heart fluttered at the scene in front of her, matthew taking off his suit jacket and venus’ sweater while she stood looking at every itty bitty detail. she spinned around to him as he threw them aside. her eyes skipped from matthew’s eyes to his lips and it took all her confidence to make their lips meet.
after kiss and kiss and kiss, matty didn’t think much before he scooped venus up and made their way to his room. he placed her gently on the bed, her fingers tied in his curls. he chased for her lips as she fell back on the comfy mattress, his hands holding her sides.
“w-wait, venus” matthew spoke, breaking the blissful link of their lips. venus gave a soft whine but she looked into his sad eyes and composed herself from matthew’s toe-curling kisses. “yeah?” she asked, he looked down from her now worried face. she became concerned if she did something wrong, if there really was anything holding them back from being with each other.
“nick. your mother said you’re dating a man named nick back in new york. are you really?” he asked quietly. venus snickered, “my mother never pays attention, does she?” matthew furrowed his brows. “nick? yeah just a guy from my internship who asked me out on one date. just one.”
“you don’t want to go out on more?” matthew asked, pushing a possibility that venus never paid mind to. “matty, i couldn’t feel a single thing for any of them. for anyone who tried to spark a conversation.” matty nodded, surely knowing the feeling, “and- a part of me never wanted to. i kept having this fantasy that when i’d come home, i’d finally get what i always wanted. a particular person who so happened to make it to my parents house before me.”
he smiled, his hands softly beginning to rub her sides. “nick by the way…. well you remember that guy that tried to speak to taryn at any time he could, and brady was like millimetres away from beating him up?” venus said smiling and playing with the collar of mattys dress shirt. “yeah, at the st. patty’s party” she nodded, “yeah well,” she bounced her brows and giggled. “he looks like that? no way” he said, giggling with her. “the resemblance is uncanny. but yeah, my mother is always exaggerating everything, you should know that by now.”
matty nodded, “please she made it seem like a 2 year relationship. but a part of me really did believe it. that you really did move on from what, a childhood crush-” her hands made their way to cup matthews face, “matty i made you a promise, i wasn’t going anywhere.” venus could feel all the uncertainty and hesitation fall from his shoulders. “and i told you i was never going to forget your sweet sweet face”
she smiled, tugging at him to kiss her already. when the two of them broke the kiss for air, a smile crept up at the corners of venus’ lips. “the question is, whether we eat or well, continue in here. what do you think?” matty smirked, laying a teasing kiss on her lips, “i think we’ll work up an appetite later, no?” matty says, pulling a giggling venus up so she could straddle his lap.
“i missed you” venus spoke, letting her arms hook around the back of matty’s neck. “i missed you more, trust me”
shirts ripped off, pants unbuttoned, underwear slipped down. it took no effort to feel like the love filled kids who couldn’t keep their hands off of each other. who couldn’t mask the groans or whines from slipping past their kiss swollen lips. or couldn’t help getting their fingers tangled in each other’s hair, searching for anything to ground them from their euphoric state.
nails scratching against matthew's back, marks taking shape on each other’s neck, a trail of wet kisses leading to venus’ throbbing cunt. she could have sworn that she needed to pinch herself to see if she really was feeling his tongue this time. but now that she tugs at his curls, a tight grip of his hands keeping her thighs from squeezing around his head, she didn’t feel anything but ablaze.
there was such a hunger of having matty fill the void inside of venus. matthew couldn’t count the amount of times he would do anything to feel her wet pussy flutter around his length again. to have her leg hooked up and over his shoulder, just to hear her gasp when he pushed in for what seemed impossibly deeper.
matthew’s warm breath moved from hovering over venus’ neck to her ear. her mouth nipping at his shoulder while his hips harshly bucked into hers. “mine, all mine” he whispered, kissing her jaw.
“all yours” venus whined out, pulling him in for a kiss.

The smell of pancake batter filled the air of your apartment, a steady low sizzle as it cooked in the pan. It was still early in the day, the sun shining just over the tops of the neighboring buildings to illuminate your kitchen. You breathed in deeply, intoxicated by all the sensations, and leaned your head back against the edge of the kitchen island.
Matt tugged you further down the countertop by your thighs, legs resting comfortably on his shoulders. You squirmed a little as his tongue swirled around your clit and your back lifted off the surface every so slightly. His fingers massaged your thighs softly, exactly where you knew there would be bruises, and ran them up and down your skin occasionally.
“Mmm,” you hummed, lulled by the motion of his tongue. Slow, intentional drags, like a personal prayer along your folds.
Your old, worn t-shirt had been pulled up past your breasts—where this endeavor started after you’d hopped up onto the island to watch him cook—and your underwear was nowhere to be found. You’d been wearing some, but Matt had tossed them somewhere without much thought. You wouldn’t be surprised if maybe they had landed in the sink.
Sleep still tugged at your eyes, a haze over your entire being, lazily picking up your arm to nestle your fingers in Matt’s hair. He smiled against you, teeth nibbling gently against the sensitive nub. You were sore, also like you’d predicted, but he was doing everything to make you feel comfortable and appreciated and adored. Every time he buried himself between your legs he devoured you like a four-course meal, lapping up everything he could before your body would inevitably become too sensitive for it to be enjoyable.
A scent touched your nose, the start of something getting a bit too cooked, and before you could say anything, Matt was pulling away from you. He gently placed your feet on the edge of the counter and kissed your knee.
“Stay there,” he whispered, an early morning husk coating his voice. With ease, he flipped the pancake to the other side, batter barely spilling, before he turned back to you and parted your folds again. Your breath hitched for a second, the pace of his tongue a little more vigorous than before, and you reached back to grip the edge of the countertop.
You didn’t say anything, the haze of sleep, sex, and pancakes filling your head. He groaned like he was eating his favorite food and it made your jaw clench. Another impeccable sight to see for any of your nosey neighbors. You hadn’t received a complaint yet but every day you wondered if you’d find a note on one of your doors telling you to keep it down. Time would tell.
Matt’s pace quickened the moment he felt the telltale sign you were close to your orgasm—muscles contracting and stiffening with every stroke of his tongue over you. You fidgeted a little but he held you in place no matter how much you writhed against his grip. It only took another minute before you let out a cry, body shaking, folds leaking with his spit and your cum. The pressure you felt in your head fizzled, a tingling sensation traveling over your skin as Matt pressed a sweet kiss to your sensitive clit. Your orgasm dangled in the air.
Matt moved away from you to place the pancake on the stack he’d already been making and brought the pan to the sink beside you. Your head lolled to the side a bit to look at him, gorgeous in the morning rays, chestnut locks tousled from your fingers. He smiled a little, feeling your gaze.
You watched him take a clean hand towel from the drawer you liked to keep them in, soak it with the warm water, and position himself between your legs again. Slowly, and with care, he dragged the material from your clit down to your entrance. He was always thorough and thoughtful with his aftercare.
He walked past you to toss the material into the laundry—he had also leaned over to pick up something you assumed was your underwear to add to the pile as well. When he returned to you, you still hadn’t moved from where you laid on the kitchen island. Your breath had steadied but you couldn’t bring yourself to remove yourself from the bliss. Matt had stood in front of you, vision flipped, his hands on either side of you.
“What a week,” you said, a little breathless still. He chuckled a bit and leaned down to press his lips to yours in an upside-down kiss. The taste of yourself on his lips permeated the kiss despite knowing he’d licked them clean like he always did. Your hand touched his cheek affectionately and scratched at the five o’clock shadow that had started to appear.
“What a week indeed,” he muttered. Matt pulled away and walked toward the plate of pancakes he’d masterfully made between eating you out. “How many pancakes you want?”
You didn’t want any of it to end. The smiles, the laughter, the fun, the joy, the earth-shattering orgasms…
Good thing tomorrow was Monday.

I thought it would be more engaging for the reader to follow Rafael and Rita’s banter if it were written as a transcription. Get cozy as you imagine being in the same room as besties for life, Rafael Barba and Rita Calhoun, reflecting on an evening most likely spent alone, just the two of them starting the night at their favorite ice cream parlor over a banana split debating a case and ending the night keeping each other warm like they have always done since their Harvard Law days. Rita realizes it is time to let Rafael know how much he truly means to her, and that includes showing him he deserves to be happy with the woman he does not want to imagine his life without. Who is this woman? Is it her? Or, is Rita helping her best friend allow himself the chance at true love with someone else?
Rita: Why are you in my kitchen, Rafi? It is your birthday, not mine.
Rafael: You know I hate surprises.
Rita: Then why are you trying to hide your smile?
Rafael: I am not smiling.
Rita: And I am 39.
Rafael: For the sixth year in a row.
Rita: I should have bought you another bottle of Macallan.
Rafael: I liked this gift better, Rita.
Rita: Speak up, babe. Did you lose your speaking voice all of a sudden?
Rafael: I liked this gift better, Rita!
Rita: I heard you the first time, but I wanted everyone still here to know how cuddly you are.
Rafael: You can take the man out of the Bronx.
Rita: But you can’t take the Bronx out of the man. I get it, Rafael. We don’t like letting our guard down. It may work in the courtroom but not in the bedroom.
Rafael: You never had complaints about either of our bedrooms, sweetheart.
Rita: Never!
Rafael: I trust you.
Rita: I trust you too, Rafi.
Rafael: Um, are you up to finish tonight with a bang?
Rita: I don’t think that is a good idea.
Rafael: What is wrong? I’m so sorry. I loved my party. Seeing everyone from work…um.
Rita: And home?
Rafael: Yes.
Rita: If not for her, you and I would celebrate your birthday over a banana split.
Rafael: Her?
Rita: Yes, Mistletoe.
Rafael: You mean Christmas?
Rita: Mistletoe, Christmas, who cares?
Rafael: Her name is Christmas, and yes, you do care.
Rita: Who in their right mind names their kid after a holiday?
Rafael: It’s not important. Leave her alone. She is my friend, Rita.
Rita: Friend, eh?
Rafael: Yes, my friend.
Rita: I have known you for over twenty years, Rafael Barba.
Rafael: And?
Rita: I have not seen that look on your face since, um, well, you know who I am talking about.
Rafael: Yelina?
Rita: Ugh! I thought I told you never to repeat her name in my presence.
Rafael: Come on! Yelina broke my heart, not yours.
Rita: Don’t say her name!
Rafael: Okay!
Rita: Christmas helped me plan your surprise birthday party. She was a big help, considering my caseload. It’s not like she has much to do besides play in her art studio.
Rafael: She works in her art studio, Rita. That is her job, and she is busy, too.
Rita: I know, Rafael. I love it when you defend her. You start blushing, and your green eyes get brighter in defense of what you call her “your friend”?
Rafael: I hate you.
Rita: I hate you too.
Rafael: She helped you?
Rita: Yes, she did. And the feeling is mutual between you and her.
Rafael: Are you psychic now?
Rita: No, I am a woman.
Rafael: Oh, I didn’t know.
Rita: I am trying to tell you that I don’t think it is a good idea for us to have sex anymore, Rafael.
Rafael: You and I can still be friends.
Rita: You will always be my best friend, Rafi.
Rafael: You will always be my best friend, too, Rita.
Rita: Christmas is your best friend now.
Rafael: I am allowed to have two best friends.
Rita: I know. She wants you to be happy, even if it may be you and me. I assured her that you and I are or were what young people like her call “friends with benefits.”
Rafael: She is not that young, Rita.
Rita: You were in high school when she was born, Rafael.
Rafael: It does not bother us; does it bother you?
Rita: No!
Rafael: Will you be happy?
Rita: I am happy, and I am happy for you too. Besides, I am seeing someone.
Rafael: Really? What’s his name?
Rita: She.
Rafael: Well, okay then. What is her name?
Rita: She is a lawyer; that is all I will tell you for now.
Rafael: Please tell me her name before you put a ring on her finger.
Rita: Changing subjects.
Rafael: I was kidding. I do hope to meet her if that is what you want.
Rita: You will be the first to know.
Rafael: I think Christmas is still here.
Rita: Of course she is. I can smell the holly from here.
Rafael: Rita!
Rita: If you want to help in my kitchen, make some coffee for us, Rafael.
Rafael: I don’t want to ask her to leave yet.
Rita: The coffee is for her, too, silly. If she leaves, you leave with her. You two live near each other. Oh, you have protection?
Rafael: Rita, I am not discussing my sex life with you.
Rita: She is cute. Ask her to spend the night with you.
Rafael: Rita.
Rita: I don’t want to find out you didn’t at least give her a kiss goodnight. And you know I am not talking about a chaste kiss between friends, Rafael Barba!
Rafael: You won’t, Rita Calhoun.
Rita: She and I are friends now.
Rafael: Hmm.
Rita: Rafael and Christmas sitting in a tree…
Rafael: I will meet you in the sitting room.
Rita: You better hide that blush of yours.
Rafael: Rita.
Rita: What?
Rafael: Thank you.
Rita: You’re welcome.
Rafael: I love you, Rita.
Rita: I love you too, Rafael.
Rafael: My wish came true.
Rita: Yes, it did. Happy Birthday, Rafael. Now, get out of my kitchen.

Saving Grace - Julie Molina x Fem!Reader
“OKAY SO I JUST WOKE UP FROM A DREAM WHERE I WAS AT LIKE A HALLOWEEN PARTY WITH JULIE AS FRIENDS AND WE WERE HAVING FUN BUT THEN SOME BOYS KEPT MAKING COMMENTS ABOUT HER COSTUME AND SHE FELT UNCOMFY SO I GAVE HER MY JACKET AND THEN JUST STAYED BY HER SIDE THE WHOLE TIME AFTER...”
A little late, but a little post Halloween gay never hurt anyone.
Tumblr media
Julie strolled into the part with a confident smile. She had constructed her She-Ra costume over the span of the past few months, and was extremely proud of the results. She held the sword over her shoulder as she opened the door to the Patterson family home.
As she entered, she was met by the gaze of several attendees who had already dove into the punch that sat on the kitchen table. She avoided their hazy stares as she made her way to the kitchen.
She quickly found her friends in the back corner of the room. Y/N and Flynn stood in a semi-circle with her bandmates near the stove, chatting amongst themselves. Y/N turned toward her first, and her jaw dropped slightly as she took in the girl’s look.
“Julie, OH MY GOODNESS,” She shrieked, holding out her hand toward the girl.
She spun Julie around in a circle and the boys wolf-whistled as she turned back around to face them. Her face thoroughly warm now, Julie dropped the girl’s embrace and fell into the circle next to her. Y/N took the opportunity to wrap her free arm around the girl, rubbing her thumb against her shoulder. Julie shivered at the contact, begging for goosebumps to stay behind as to not blow her cover.
Y/N stared at the crew with a smile before letting her eye’s fall to the smaller girl’s side profile.
“Doesn’t she look fantastic ya’ll?”
The boys nodded, Alex giving Julie a knowing wink before his eyes met Y/N’s. Julie’s shoulders shrunk in as she crumbled under her panic. Y/N tapped on her arm, gaining her attention again.
“You didn’t tell me we were going all out, now I look like an idiot,” She sighed, shaking the tassels of her flapper dress.
Julie took in the girl’s full ensemble, and yes, it may be basic but she looked incredible as usual. The black dress hung just right, and as her gaze filtered across the room, she knew that boys across the school had noticed that aspect too. She rolled her eyes at her friend, poking her side with her elbow.
“You know you look great, shut up.”
The girl beamed down at her, letting her nose scrunch in laughter. Julie tried not to stare long at her eyes, noticing that their interaction had already caught the attention of Luke. As her eyes migrated toward his, he tipped his cup at her, sending a full smile in her direction. She bit back an insult, turning to face Y/N again.
“I saw Matthew walk in,” She gasped, exposing her teeth to the other girl. “No lipstick on my teeth right?”
Julie giggled, shaking her head at the other girl. Y/N dropped her grip on the girl’s arms as she made her way over to the school’s valedictorian. Julie grabbed a glass from the table behind her, tipping the cool liquid to her mouth as she watched Y/N place a hand on his bicep.
“Julie,” A soft voice pulled her gaze from the interaction.
She turned and saw Kyle, a boy she slightly knew from her 2nd period chemistry class, smiling widely at her. She nodded, taking another sip from her drink before responding.
“Kyle, hey” She started, running a hand through her hair. “What’s up?”
He bit down on his bottom lip as he gave her outfit a once over, his eyes lingering a bit too long on her legs.
“I just wanted to say that your costume is great,” He responded, eyes falling back up to hers.
She laughed awkwardly, chugging back the rest of her drink.
“Thanks,” She kept the response short, her eyes leading back over to Y/N, who was watching her and the boy closely.
Julie forced herself to meet Kyle’s narrow eyes again as he walked toward her.
“Yeah, I can’t believe you hid all of that,” His eyes glanced down her body before fixing on he face. “Under those baggy pants and sweatshirts all the time.”
Julie opened her mouth to say something, but her voice escaped her in the moment, throat going dry as he took another step in. Julie nodded slightly, taking a step back and hitting the table behind her. Kyle opened his lips to speak again, but was cut off by a louder female voice.
“Kyle, please leave this poor girl alone.” Y/N sighed, grabbing Julie’s hand. “If you knew anything about body language, you’d notice by now that she doesn’t want you anywhere near her.”
“Y/N this has nothing to do with you,” Kyle said, looking to Julie with pleading eyes.
Y/N pushed the smaller girl behind her, keeping their hands intertwined. Julie felt her heart rate race as she was pressed to the girl’s back.
“If my friend is uncomfortable, it has everything to do with me.”
Kyle threw up his hands in defeat, rolling his eyes at her before walking away. As soon as he made it to the living room, Y/N spun Julie back out in front of her, a worried look on her face.
“How bad was it? You looked traumatized.” She sighed, squeezing the girl’s palm in hers.
“He’s mostly harmless, but man have I ever wanted to peel out of my own skin from a compliment.” Julie said, pulling at the bottom of her short skirt.
Y/N nodded, grabbing her grey sweatshirt from the table next to them and holding out to her.
“If you’d feel more comfortable covering up for awhile, I totally get it.”
Y/N let go of the girl’s hand and grabbed the jacket. She placed it over her head, the girl was notably taller than Julie, giving her a jacket dress combo as it fell onto her body. Julie noted the smell of roses, a signature Y/N scent, and tried to stop the smile from pulling at her lips as her torso was filled with warmth.
Y/N reconnected their hands and pulled Julie toward the couch, the two girls falling next to each other on the cushions. Julie released her grip on Y/N’s hand and let herself fall back onto the other girl’s chest, trying to ignore the pulse that was sent to her chest as Y/N let her hands fall softly at Julie’s sides.
The two listened to Luke’s drunken argument with Reggie about the history of the Star Wars trilogy, but most of Julie’s focus ended up on the sensation of Y/N’s hands at her waist. She tried to keep her breath steady as she relaxed into her friend’s arms.
Every time Y/N laughed, her back vibrated from the giggles and sent a smile to Y/N’s face. After the third fit of laughter, she finally leaned back and met her smile for a moment before turning back to the boys. She saw Luke holding his phone up out of the corner of her eye, sending a pointed glare toward him. Her phone buzzed a moment later, and she had a new snapchat from him.
She swiped up and clicked on the red button. A photo of Y/N beaming down at Julie with her hands around her lit up the screen.
“Couple of the year?” The caption underneath said with a winky face.
Julie sent an unamused stare to the guitarist, who simply shrugged before his smile took over his face again. He leaned back over to Reggie, whispering in his ear and pointing his thumb toward the two girls.
“Don’t be Jealous Patterson,” Y/N called out of seemingly nowhere. “You had your chance with this one.”
Julie’s face turned quickly toward the girl, who shot a wink toward her before looking back up at the pair of boys who looked at her bug-eyed. Luke opened his mouth to say something but shooed her eyes off him last moment, ending the conversation.
Julie felt warm breath near her ear, tickling the skin.
“You okay?”
She met Y/N’s eyes again, a sense of calmness rushing through her at her gentle gaze. She nodded up at her, and Y/N rubbed her hands up and down the girl’s arms a few times before Julie turned back around.
A second later, Y/N’s head was leaning against the side of Julie’s as they listened to the music in the background. Julie let a soft smile play at her lips at the contact, closing her eyes for a moment.
“Just kiss already,” Alex whined. Y/N’s eyes opened wide again, and her gaze met his, his head tilted as he grinned at the pair.
“Okay,” Y/N said, bringing her lips down to Julie’s cheeks.
The smaller girl flushed under the gesture and all three boys beamed at her with wide smiles and knowing eyes. Julie tried to focus on anything but the boys in front of her as she melted into the floor and Y/N’s grip around her grew stronger.
Eventually the ruckus surrounding the girls died down, and Y/N and Julie simply sat on the couch, people watching and rating other people’s costumes.
“They try too hard,” Y/N sighed, pointing her red solo cup at Carrie and Nick dressed as a sparkling Barbie and Ken.
“They didn’t try hard enough,” Julie responded, pointing at Alex and Willie, who were dressed as...themselves, refusing to do the couple’s costume of David and Patrick from Schitts Creek that she had picked out for them.
Y/N laughed in Julie’s ear, letting her lips hang near her face as she took a deep breath in.
“You ready to head out?” Y/N asked, squeezing Julie’s upper arm.
The smaller girl nodded, lifting off of her chest. Julie lifted to a standing position and Y/N rose to meet her. The two intertwined their hands again and moved toward the front door.
“Get home safe you two,” A hardly sober Reggie cried out toward them, raising his glass in their direction.
Y/N rolled her eyes at the intoxicated bassist and pulled the door in front of her open. As they stepped out onto the street, a shiver ran down Y/N’s spine. Julie pointed at the jacket and met the girl’s eyes.
“You need this back, I can totally-”
“Jules, no I’m fine.” Y/N looked over at Julie’s blanketed body. “You look 1000% cuter in that anyway.”
Julie’s cheeks burned under her gaze yet again, and she pointed her face toward the sky for a moment, hoping the head would rush down to her feet.
“You okay?” Y/N asked, forcing Julie to meet her eyes.
“Definitely okay,” Julie said softly.
Y/N smirked at her response, sending a squeeze to her hand as they walked down the street. As the pair made their way to Julie’s front porch, the curly haired girl turned her body so she was facing the taller girl in front of her.
“Thanks for rescuing me tonight,” She said, meeting her dark eyes in hesitation.
“I’d do it all over again,” Y/N responded, biting down on her lower lip.
A silence hung between them as they stood in the cold air, hands connected at their hips. Y/N broke the silence and leaned forward, pressing her lips to Julie’s cheek again.
“Night, Molina.” She said as she let go of her girl’s hand and turned to walk down her front stairs.
Julie at on the porch for a moment, watching the girl take off across the street toward her home with pink shoulders and and her short dress sprinting against the cold weather and smiled.

SEEN, READ, PLAYED 2020
In spite of the pandemic I continued to be absolutely insane, once again taking a page from Steven Soderbergh and kept track of track of every movie (78), episode of television (1,349), play (4) and musical (1) seen, every book read (55), concert attended (none!) and video game (11) finished (not to mention all of the scripts I read for work or podcast episodes I listened to, which were not included because enough is enough).
The pandemic definitely had an effect on my media consumption, increasing it in some areas (1 more movie, 15 more books, 1 more video game) and decreasing it in others (187 fewer episodes of TV, and a lot fewer live events -- down 13 plays, 7 musicals, and 6 concerts).

Geometry
Hyacinth was excited for his new life in college. He was excited to be able to squeeze into a last minute community home, though he was a little sad his brother Kyoya wasn’t able to move in with him. He had been the first to move in early in the morning with Kyoya helping him and Hyacinth barley had time to take a short nap before he meet with Nari to begin practice for the music group. By the time he had come back all of his other roomates were rummaging in their own rooms. He was texting his brother when he heard one of the boys, Matthew he thought, called out for everyone to finish up on the roomate contract they had to turn into their RA. Hyacinth bounced out of his room with a bright smile and stopped int he kitchen with a chill up his spine. All of his roomates were huge. They were at least 6’1 with broad shoulders and shadows that Hyacinth could probably hide him. He stared wide eyed at them feeling very out of place with his skinny arms and short stature. He had been told that he was staying in a student competitor house, and he had assumed they would put him with the mathletes not the athletes. “I-um,” He turned back to look at his room and back again. “Ok.” He scurried to sit on the far sofa curling up to make himself look smaller.

7th Comedy Monologue
“Hey my Cheese bags I’m back from my adventure in 1985”
“No joke if you look it up
the timeframe of days for each month this year
are the exact same as they were in 1985”
So all this “80s revival stuff” with Duran Duran and Depeche Mode touring, Petshop Boys releasing a new album, a new generation falling in love with Queen and She-Ra while the world is being messed up by a tyrannical iron lady and a talking tangerine makes a bit of sense doesn’t it?”
Even though I was born in the 2000s I’ve always loved most of the media from that decade, the gothic and upbeat synthesizer music, the cheaply made but entertaining cartoons, the video games, the basic but stylish fashion, the musicals and John Hughes films, the mix of music genres in the charts,Goth,Synth,Punk,2 Tone,Post-Punk,New Wave,Glam Metal,Alternative,Shoegaze,Hip Hop,Electronica
I was watching Saved by the Bell  before Netflix even existed
Then again a lot of the shows from then were also being revived back in my day
Dal Winton was presenting game shows, Pingu replaced the scary walrus monsters with rap music, I watched or had VHS tapes of the Muppet show, Noddy, Postman Pat and Scooby Doo.
Scooby-Doo! Now that’s a show that never gets old because it never changes, anyone regardless of what generation they’re from would be able to tell you
“Oh Yeah, I remember Scooby Doo”
When you think about it Scooby Doo is quite philosophical
we are all just a gang going on our own adventures
that and the first few live-action movies are modern masterpieces
I was just browsing Twitter or Tumblr or literally anywhere on the internet only to see that screencaps were taken from the live action Scooby Doo interviews had turned into memes
*ahem*
Well,I was auditioning for the role of Velma, I could sense from the way Matthew Lillard just fully encompassed the role of Shaggy, it felt like he was Shaggy, he was our saviour as he felt his spiritual energy increase, that’s when I knew we were working with a legend
Something like that although Matthew isn’t too fond of the memes himself specifically the ones where his spiritual connections are described more like demon possession rituals
*ahem*
“Being Shaggy has led me down a path of death and destruction. I’ve killed many mortals in hope of replicating 1% of Shaggy’s being, by the end of filming I hope to become one with him”
In which Matthew responded with
*deadpan voice*
This is wrong
I mean I might also have inspirations where I feel like I can philosophically connect with them, in their performing style and personality but that’s where I draw the line
Personality?  That’s a tricky subject
You could say some people have consistent personalities
People said Freddie Mercury and David Bowie were party animals who were incredible on stage with their charisma, creativity and charm but other sources have said they were relaxed, laid back people who were shy when being interviewed.
That could just be the contrast between their onstage and offstage personas but not all of us have that, even if we are all  just actors in a play, hoping each day goes the right way
Some of us are punk, even if we don’t explicitly say that we are, or have the stereotypical style associated with it,a lot of us just try to be ourselves, some of us can enjoy reality shows and horror movies at the same time, some of us can enjoy One Direction and Gorillaz, some of us can love fashion but also love memes, Theatre, and 1980s aesthetics
I’d say I’m the same but sometimes my personality is all over the place
I can go from being cheerful, relaxed and happy to being dazed and clumsy or cynical or entranced and hyper-fixated to Pessimistic and Cold to Quiet and Timid to Mellow and Loud   what personality traits you associate with me, however, is up to your own conclusion
call me any internet subculture stereotype and I’d be able to tell you about how I either, unfortunately, was the stereotype or I hung around people who were those stereotypes
if you said I was someone who watched Cbbc and citv you’d be right
if you said I was a classic rock enthusiast years ago and now you’d be right
if you said I used to be a cringy anime enthusiast  you’d be right
if you said I was one of those theatre kids who watched Disney sitcoms you’d be right
if you said I was one of those meme posters who referenced movies like Shrek and bee movie you’d be right
Another thing punks did was and sometimes still do was creating fanzines, magazines related to their favourite band or tv show or their own opinions on what’s going in the world, nowadays you could say social media has replaced that, but publications like the Daily Mirror, The Sun and TMZ still have a presence on there,I’d say fanzines should have a revival.
The BAFTA’s also happened recently and I wasn’t impressed, then again when are awards shows anything other than beauty pageants for films anyway?
Some films deserved their awards, but some films barely got a mention, Paddington 2 wasn’t included in there or in any of the other film awards this year and Stan and Ollie got nothing…
A darn shame because that film was so well made, it felt authentic, while Stan and Ollie also have a bit of a universal following, there are still some people who probably don’t know who they are!
Before Walliams and Lucas, Before the Two Ronnies, Before Richie and Eddie
There was…Laurel and Hardy
Two moustached blokes, who in the 20s and 50s would just try to delight audiences the best way they could, through slapstick and laughter, without them, most of the world’s double acts wouldn’t exist and even Spongebob wouldn’t exist
Yep, you heard me right, all those misadventures Spongebob and Patrick would have, they were loosely based on the adventures of Laurel and Hardy, except instead of it being about a tall British man and a fat American it was about an anthropomorphic sponge and a dumb but caring starfish.
Speaking of Spongebob, there was some sad news involving Spongebob not too long ago
The creator of Spongebob, Stephen Hillenburg…had passed away from ALS
I know, it’s awful, stupid motor neuron diseases and stupid Adam Levine too,for those who don’t know there was an episode of Spongebob called Band Geeks where they ended the episode with the cast playing a song called Sweet Victory over a Superbowl type of event, for the actual super bowl Spongebob fans around the world petitioned for that song to be played in tribute for Stephen, however we got Adam Levine singing a different song instead….what a letdown
If it wasn’t for SpongeBob I and some of the rest of the new generation, wouldn’t know half the old music or old films we know now.
To let down millions of fans like that makes me sick
Honestly, I was a bit sick a few weeks ago, I’ve been sick before and hospitalized twice but this particular moment of sickness was odd
It was like any other night, I was trying to get some sleep and lucid dream, but then it happened, the shivers, the shakes the trembling aches,
Out of nowhere, I felt like an ice-cube stuck in a microwave, It was too cold but it was too warm, I eventually got to sleep but when I got up the next morning I felt sick again, sorry for disclosing those details but it was like the exorcist…
Usually, when I’m sick watching documentaries, Kitchen Nightmares or 90s films weirdly cheers me up
Speaking of films, Rocketman the Elton John movie is out and it actually looks good
It’s being directed by the guy who was the replacement director for Bo Rhap and if it ends up being brilliant I won’t be surprised, the trailer gave off Velvet Goldmine vibes, the style of composed cinematography and I’m sounding like Film Twitter, Isle of Dogs was a good film…oh wait it wasn’t acknowledged much by the award shows either.
Another amazing film I recently watched was Rocky Horror…I know I’ve mentioned it before but that was when I only knew the sequel and some of the soundtrack,
It was amazing, it was brilliant, it was fantastic, it was out of this world,
ah! Rocky Horror was splendid
I definitely now understand why it’s still going strong to this day
It’s that hybrid of rock and roll, optimistic nihilism and soft aesthetics
That just works for me, another thing I’ve remembered was that Richard O’ Brien played the dad in Phineas and Ferb, well that explains that part of me liked that cartoon for the music and some of the characters but other characters did my head in like that Isabel character
“Hey, Phineas what ya dooing?”
“How about you let me finish my invention and you mind your own business”
Oof that’s too harsh…but considering aspects of the marvel Phineas and Ferb crossover were surprisingly a bit sexist at times outdated for the show that is usually quite progressive in its representation and characters…it’s probably accurate
Another person who hasn’t changed but is also often harsh, Piers Morgan, a little tweety bird told me he had a mysterious illness, good riddance I’d say, he’s the new Noel Edmonds, the presenter who used to be ok but now is unbearable…because he never shuts up
Thankfully though he’s “taking a break” from GMB that will rest our eardrums
Russell Brand has also been in the tabloids again, even though he’s more focused on his Buddhist spiritual recovery enlightening, looking back he wasn’t as bad as people described him, yeah at times he was a bit too over the top,but he was and is quite an ok bloke, but I’d say temporarily banning tickling is a bit of a stretch,
when you think about the number of people who disrespect our literal and figurative personal space on a daily basis, it kinda makes a bit of sense,
whether your sensory sensitive or not, I’m sure you hate it, when people are too touchy at times
although years ago I would’ve been a bit of an ignorant hypocrite about that
Hating it when crowds of kids would chase me like how the paparazzi chase their next gossip target, yet often annoyingly running up to people to talk to or entertain them.
I really need to learn to enjoy loneliness more because I get some of my best ideas when alone, but emotionally I feel a lot better when around others, a bit of an Ambivert really,
I’m sorry I can be a bit all over the place, I’m trying to make my energy more manageable
as that lucid dreaming thing has been misused at times,
I shouldn’t let myself be controlled…
by anyone or anything..no overthinking, no overworking,
treat the world as your stage, start your first act, motivated and ready, take your recharging interval breaks and then move on for your second act
fancy that me an ex-drama student making that metaphor when my current course  involves digitally drawing art, editing audio and sitting at a computer for most of the day
But then again just because someone shows good charisma that doesn’t always mean their a good person.
Ted Bundy, one of America's most notorious serial killers used charisma and charm in his court cases, and with the amount of fangirls giving him fanmail it was like the Beatles fandom but for people with Stockholm syndrome, and now with Netflix’s documentary and Troy from High School Musical in an upcoming film about him, that seems to be repeating itself…
*Alien voice* Ted Bundy the 1960s called they want your fangirls back!
One show I know you probably haven’t heard of is The Boondocks, a south park esque cartoon with an anime esque art style, referencing the social commentary of African American culture and media, celebrating some aspects while critiquing others, through the lenses of a socialist boy named Huey Freeman, his rapper wannabe brother Riley and their activist grandad Robert.
This show was quite revolutionary,it referenced the issue of each episode quite well, even though it only lasted 4 seasons, however, because the show is quite American, apart from the animation which is done in Korea,The Boondocks is not well known in the UK, which is a shame because it is a really good show that still holds up…however, it does fall under one mousetrap that most other adult cartoons fall into….
Because of the references to violence, innuendo and other dark subject matter sometimes referenced in a satirically humorous way, some audiences  would just watch the show because it’s offensive thinking that the show was made just to be offensive..instead of what the show was actually made for..which was to give social commentary on the issues relevant to African American communities in America.
I had watched this show years ago, it only just came back on my radar, because the creator Aaron McGruder, who based the show off his webcomic of the same name, had recently made a new issue.
There’s a difference between being satirical and being offensive
Your either making fun of something bad that a system or people are doing to make people aware of how stupid and sad the world can be at times, subjectively making fun of a stereotype, or your an arse who thinks they’re a comedian when they waste their time on social media, thinking they’re amazing and funny when they’re holding up the line at Mcdonald’s and the only people laughing at their jokes are gammon and people who found Bernard Manning funny
“Oh Wait”
I know sometimes I have unpopular opinions such as how my views of someone dip depending on their views of Kanye West
and sometimes I can be a bit snarky, and I hate and love stuff in equal amounts, but we need a bit of that don’t we, if we bottle it all up we explode like volcanos, but if we overshare too much, we crash like out of control cars
It’s all about moderation, salt is a tasty condiment but eat too much of it and your arteries will get clogged,
A few days back it was the day Mark Ashton passed away, for those who don’t know,he was an LGBT activist in the 80s,he volunteered with organizations such as the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament,he and the other activists helped to support the miners during the miner strike, creating the LGSM Alliance,Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners, there was a film made about them too, called Pride, but what some people don’t know is that….Mark Ashton was Northern Irish…he was one of us..he was the Marsha P Johnson of our time..if we were a bit like Mark Ashton this country would be a slightly more accepting place, why don’t we give love!
Let’s move on, plant more flowers in our garden..I know I sound like a hippie but it’s true, our Celtic Summerland is being used as a cesspool for Nuclear Waste
Oi! use your own bins, not the place we’re living in, pick up your rubbish and clean up your own mess…
The 80s were telling us something with all those protect and survive adverts, yes some of us were prepared as the older generation made us alert, others couldn’t recognize that a lot of innocent people were getting hurt.
When we say we want a 1980s comeback we want the music, clothes, games and  films,
but Nope
while we have some of that the 1980s revival we get is the one that involves Nuclear Danger and the ghost of Margaret Thatcher
All these TV and Film revivals, some are cool others are just unnecessary  Do we really need a Snow White sequel? No, we don’t but we did get one even if it was unofficial
Back in 2007 a French animation company made a sequel to Snow White which was also a bit like Shrek in how it satirised the fairy tale tropes, how Prince Charming feels like he is objectified while he ends up doing the same thing to the female characters, quite a tosser but that’s the point of the parody to point out the flaws with fairy tale logic, and to put the likes of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella in more realistic scenarios.
…it’s strange, weird but brilliant too
The English dub had quite a few familiar faces doing the character voices
Stephen Fry as the narrator, Morwenna Banks, Simon Greenall and another British actor
Rik someone...
Ah! I remember his name now, he was in many successful sitcoms in the 80s and 90s,he was a legend, he knew how to keep people laughing, whether they were children, adults, teenagers,
in television, theatre, film or music
quite an eclectic range of talent
Although
I’m a new fan, I might adore his work, but I had just learnt his name 2 years ago, whereas, with other fans, they have created their own work, such as Charlie Brooker and Simon Pegg… some were able to meet him…lucky...
Some encounters were quite interesting, I had heard someone’s nan got to meet him in the 90s but she got his name wrong so she ended up saying
“‘oh hello can I have your autograph please Mr mayo?’
Well that happened, she probably still got that autograph,...
And somewhere up there, Rik Mayall is thinking of us, he, Stephen Hillenburg and David Bowie are probably chatting away
Let’s make the lord of misrule proud

Live Picks: 8/30-9/2
Tumblr media
L.A. Witch
BY JORDAN MAINZER
We got ya covered through Sunday!
8/30: Set It Off, Subterranean
We previewed Tampa symphonic rock band Set It Off’s set at The Forge earlier this year, describing them as “a Warped Tour-approved band who has released three albums, the most prominent 2016′s Upside Down but the best 2014′s sickly sweet Duality, which found success in the grand condition of cheesy concept records, its theatrical, sweeping melodies and instrumentation overcoming its less palatable pop rock aspects.”
Since then, the band has signed to Fearless Records and released a new song, the faux-industrial emo, overproduced “Killer in the Mirror”.
Indie pop duo Chapel and rapper De’Wayne Jackson open.
8/30: Round Robin, Thalia Hall
We don’t know much about this performance other than that it’s a night of improvisation by people who live in, are from, or are rooted in Chicago music. Judging by the lineup, it’s a must-see. It includes Roscoe Mitchell, Akenya, DJ The Twilite Tone, poet Kevin Coval, Tortoise’s Jeff Parker, and SILY favorites like Matana Roberts, Haley Fohr of Circuit des Yeux, Mind Over Mirrors’ Jamie Fennelly, Chicago Symphony Orchestra cellist Katinka Kleijn, Matchess, and Makaya McCraven.
8/30: L.A. Witch, Beat Kitchen
Drawling psychedelic band L.A. Witch released their self-titled debut last year and have been touring strong off of it ever since. Expect to hear lots from the record and hopefully some new material.
Spacey band Moonwalks and local sludgy post-punk duo Pussyfoot open.
8/31: Miguel, Union Park
We previewed Miguel’s show at the Riviera earlier this year:
“War & Leisure, the latest album from Miguel, is, as its title suggests, simultaneously political and personal, the former somewhat new territory for him. The songs are varied as usual; he’s sultry on “Wolf”, funky on the synth-addled “Told You So”, and ready for the radio on the Travis Scott-featuring “Sky Walker”. Stylistically, it’s sort of a combination of his previous two albums, the drug-induced Kaleidoscope Dream and guitar-oriented Wildheart. And while it’s not as earth-shattering and trendsetting as those two, it’s perhaps his most cohesive and fully realized effort.”
Since then, he’s performed “Remember Me” from Coco at the Oscars and shared a new song, “Python”, among other things. At his headlining North Coast Music Festival slot, he should mix it up between his last three albums live, concentrating on War & Leisure.
8/31 & 9/1: Kidd Jordan and Friends, Constellation
Dog/Days is a week of free performances at Constellation, Links Hall, and Hungry Brain. This Friday at Constellation, jazz saxophonist Kidd Jordan plays with pianist Matthew Shipp, bassist William Parker, and drummer Alvin Fielder.
8/31 & 9/1: B-52′s, Ravinia
The Athens, Georgia freak new wave band’s got a decade worth of untouchable material, and they play almost all the highlights during their live set, plus the goofy as hell title track to Funplex. What’s not to love?
New wave legends Culture Club co-headlines. Thompson Twins’ lead vocalist Tom Bailey opens.
9/1: Barrence Whitfield & The Savages, Reggie’s
Soul Flowers of Titan, the new album from Barrence Whitfield & The Savages, is purportedly inspired by Sun Ra and the King Records/Federal Records Cincinnati sound of the 50′s-60′s. Is the latter noticeable? Definitely. The former? Not sure. Most of the songs, like the chaotically horn-laden “Slowly Losing My Mind” and the garage-meets-soul “Pain”, are in line with tracks from recent efforts Under the Savage Sky and Dig Thy Savage Soul. Though I guess the spirit of blues ditty “Let’s Go to Mars” is closest thematically to “space is the place,” much of Soul Flowers of Titan sounds right at home with the rest of Whitfield’s discography. And that’s a good thing, since Saturday at Reggie’s they’ll play a lot of it, plus some highlights from the band’s pre-Bloodshot Records days.
Garage rockers The Woggles headline. Baby Money & The Down Payments, the project of Chicago based songwriter Pamela Maurer open.
9/1: Sumac, Empty Bottle
Post-metal band Sumac headlines Empty Bottle as part of Scorched Tundra X. Earlier this year, they released a mammoth collaborative album with Keiji Haino, and next month, they follow up 2016′s What One Becomes with a new full-length, Love in Shadow. So far, they’ve released the 15-minute “Attis’ Blade”, which builds and sprawls to a mid-section of noise, quiet strumming, and back before revealing longing growls from Aaron Turner. I’ve heard the rest of the album, too, and it’s a good mix of new territory for the band combined with what they’ve always done well. 21-minute Opener “The Task” starts like a traditional metal song but dissolves into a calm eye before the storm of more brutality and the band’s trademark buzzing dissonance, all before ending with organs and Turner’s guttural moans. “Arcing Silver” is the shortest and most straightforward of the bunch in terms of its arrangements, peaks, and valleys, though it does end with some ambient guitar squalls that introduce more jams. And the introductory guitar tones on closer “Ecstasy of Unbecoming” are more reminiscent of Sufi music than metal, though distorted power riffing kicks the rest of the song into high gear.
Avant-garde metal band Yakuza, doom band In The Company Of Serpents, and hardcore band Couch Slut open.
9/2: Matthew Dear, Estate Ultrabar
We previewed Matthew Dear’s DJ set at smartbar earlier this year:
“Truth is, I have never been a huge fan of Matthew Dear’s original material for whatever reason–but his almost 3-hour entry in the DJ Kicks series from last year shows just how good of a curator he really is, starting with a meditative Nils Frahm track and just exploding into a dance frenzy from there. That’s why his DJ set at smartbar should be one of the best you’ll see all year.”
This time around, he’s headlining a BBQ at Estate. He’s releasing a new album Bunny in October and has revealed two tracks: the hypnotic “Bunny’s Dream” and the repetitive “Echo”.
Remix extraordinaire Josh Wink, Canadian DJ Kenny Glasgow, Fortune, Pershan, and Nick Jannite also spin.
9/2: Rapsody, Union Park
After being prominently featured on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, last year, Rapsody released her own “one of the best of the decade” rap albums. Laila’s Wisdom sees Rapsody proud to be a black woman in the rap game. “Yeah, they call me black and ugly / But I go so hard, make the whole world love me,” she spits. Sure, her features--Lamar, Anderson .Paak, Black Thought, Busta Rhymes, and BJ The Chicago Kid among them--are impressive. But her flow, especially on songs like the unstoppable “You Should Know”, the funky “Pay Up”, and the skronking “Power” (she outshines even Lamar on that one), is the main attraction. She’ll be worth the one day price of admission at North Coast.
9/2: Hannibal Buress, Chicago Theatre
We previewed Hannibal Buress’ set at Arcada Theatre back in March:
“Hannibal Buress is both a comedian for the world and Chicago, so seeing him in the area presents lots of opportunity for in-jokes. (The one about the ridiculousness of being asked for an ID at O’Hare airport from his 2015 special Comedy Camisado comes to mind.) While he’s probably best known these days for his role on Broad City, he’s increasingly building up his filmography and TV appearances and has recently started a podcast, The Handsome Rambler, on which he’s interviewed Open Mike Eagle and Run The Jewels. But he’s funniest on stage.”

Riverdale, “Chapter Twenty-Five: The Wicked and the Divine”
Jughead has seen more “mob movies” than I have, so I can’t verify his “classic trope,” but he’s speaking my language
I found Archie’s Devil Wears Prada errand-montage zippy and playful, much like Hiram Lodge himself
especially the direction of the construction guy’s arm clapping Archie’s shoulder to add movement to the swerving transition (not a technical term) as he steps into the trailer
Hiram’s soft V-neck sweater is, I assume, cashmere
Veronica’s look is so inseparable from collars and pearls that she has a collar made of pearls sewn into her dress
RAS wanted a Veronica-confirmation episode, so by God, he is getting one, and Veronica’s age be damned! Hiram and Hermione wanted “the same monsignor” from Veronica’s baptism, who I guess has been on leave at the Vatican for five years okay!
Archie wants to know if Veronica will have “to memorize stuff”
Veronica’s confirmation sponsor is her grandmother, which is par for the course, as is volunteering at a soup kitchen for her like 8 hours of required community service. I also had to write a report on Saint Lucy and pray a rosary in front of an abortion clinic. Veronica probably won’t have to do that, since you can’t say abortion on Riverdale
do soup kitchens have any actual paid employees, or are they all stocked with kids who just need volunteer hours/Matthew Goode’s character from The Good Wife in his spare time wearing that blue sweatshirt to characterize him as being “just that nice”?
Hiram is such a fucking soap opera star when he says Veronica has made him “the happiest father ALIVE.” like, alive?
“ISN’T SHE A MIRACLE?”
Tumblr media
on FP’s kitchen table is the same kind of half-gallon of milk that Jughead was drinking from the morning after his birthday party. the Andrewses kept a spare half-gallon of skim milk just for Jughead in their fridge? the nicest thing Fred ever did for him
Jughead doubts it: Jughead is VERY sassy with Sheriff Keller and FP loves it!!!! because Jughead can have an anti-authoritarian ’tude WITHOUT NECESSARILY being “a gang member” at that particular moment!
FP is so crisp and put together! FP looks GREAT! what up though, Gladys?
wow I can’t believe Jughead’s article wielded so much political power that its legal ramifications echo throughout the entire episode, as if Jughead were Nellie Bly
“CAN I GET A QUOTE?” this is the Jughead that FP plainly adores
Jughead and Betty both drink skim milk, so, their wedding will be soon
are men on webcams actually fool enough to ask the webcam girls if they can MEET IN REAL LIFE? I have no knowledge about this world, but I would imagine the answer would be “Have you ever seen a film, ever?”
50 Shades of Betty: Betty looks pretty great in that severe black fucking wig and I still want an apology from Chuck specifically about dissing the wig
“Catholic chic” means veils optional, like the stole in black tie
What damn high school in America: Jughead doesn’t have to wear the preppy Lodge uniform, I see? shame
Best costume bit: Betty’s heart sweater is possibly my favorite thing she’s ever worn. I want it BADLY
ARE YOU TELLING ME HIRAM LODGE WANTS TO SUE A HIGH SCHOOL NEWSPAPER?
“DEFAMATION OF CHARACTER”? IS THERE SOMETHING HE WROTE THAT WASN’T TRUE? ARE YOU ~NOT~ BUILDING BOWLING ALLEYS ON NATIVE AMERICAN LAND? I will fucking suit up and be Jughead’s lawyer on this. as has been demonstrated, I have seen every episode of The Good Wife and can probably practice law in Illinois (for instance I know that in Illinois you only need one-person consent to secretly record a conversation)
I love Betty and Jughead being in the same room, of course, but Betty’s gentle, poking “And...did you?” is EXCEPTIONALLY cute. Betty is so cute. and sometimes scary
Jughead’s least clueless moment of the season so far is him looking back knowingly at Betty when she says maybe he would do it to “avenge Toni’s grandfather”
“WE’RE PALS.”
Jughead kind of looks great leaning against the window. like the lighting or something. God, please let me one day see the two of them making out with Betty in her cheerleading uniform
okay, I thought Betty and Jughead, IT WAS IMPLIED, had already had sex, because I was shown them waking up together after they had slept together in the trailer. apparently they LITERALLY slept together. APPARENTLY THEY HAVE NOT HAD SEX YET. I should have known, from the sleeper biceps, that Jughead was still pining IN THIS WAY, FOR THAT! I should have KNOWN Betty had not RIDDEN JUGHEAD INTO THE SUNSET YET. fuck! what am I doing!
Every triangle has three corners, every triangle has three sides: I also emotionally defend Betty’s ecru lie about not having “done anything” with anyone since the breakup since, as one will recall, immediately after her and Archie’s kiss they stared in horror at each other and have not talked about it since, thus cancelling it out as a real kiss (this is also a statute of Illinois law)
Hermione Lodge has some sort of skinny gold Lothlórien belt on over her deep merlot blazer
Archie > Dawson: Archie is sweet when he apologizes for making Pop double-check the order: “It’s more to make sure I get everything right.”
Archie hears Pop’s slip about Hiram being “the boss,” but other things happen and he FORGETS! at what inopportune time will he remember? when he’s physically embracing Jughead Jones?
although couldn’t Pop just play it off like Hiram is Archie’s boss? think on your feet, Pop
for the record I love Agent Adams and his whole deal. his plan is so insane that it might be brilliant. I just do still wish he were being played by either Sterling K. Brown or Max Greenfield
he doesn’t appreciate Archie’s attitude: “Is there a problem?” yeah, uh, Archie’s like twelve years old and not a trained undercover field agent? I love this stupid shit
oh, everyone’s being evicted from Sunnyside? if only Jughead hadn’t driven the southside’s only lawyer out of town with Kenickie Murdoch’s switchblade
OH MY GOD HERMIONE’S PANTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
according to everyone’s facial expressions, Veronica is under the impression she is doing good political maneuvering inviting the McCoys to her confirmation, Hermione is stunned she did so, Veronica really wanted to sing a solo, and Josie doesn’t know why she has to fucking apologize for anything
Josie being Veronica’s “gift” from Mayor McCoy is horrifying
Sixth period is Intro to Film: Cruel Intentions is a fantastic Catholic standard, containing as it does cocaine, “experimental” girl-on-girl French kissing, Ryan Phillippe’s ass, the line “I'm the Marcia fucking Brady of the Upper East Side and sometimes I want to kill myself,” and implied step-sibling fucking, all of which I think Riverdale should include more of
the blue and red lighting inside the Wyrm is still nice. does the Wyrm even count as a dive? strippers probably wouldn’t waste their time at dives
wow there are some true beards in this crowd
okay…..the idea that Tall Boy is a better suspect than Jughead…...because he’s physically taller…..is singularly the most fantastic thing…..I have ever heard…..
I’ve seen Brick like thirty times: the sound of Archie shifting on the leather of Hiram’s couch is real good
“I RESPECT A MAN WHO WOULD GO TO SUCH EXTREMES.” HIRAM PLEASE!!!!! ARCHIE IS TOO DUMB FOR THIS!!!!!!
Gay?!: Ben? who the fuck is Ben? who is BEN? who the fuck?
OH MY GOD Jughead got in to see the mayor AGAIN! is Ethel Muggs her secretary???
Jughead interrupted Mayor McCoy eating her salad at her desk
for like the third time in the series she says she’s “always liked” Jughead, which, fat lot of good that’s done him
in Riverdale there is a red uniform at the soup kitchen, because even THE POOR must abide by aesthetics
Tumblr media
Archie doesn’t know what cutting cigars means
Archie’s shoulders are nice under that polo
Betty’s plan about “treat it like a missing person’s case” and making it like this snooping Blue and Gold intrigue thing is of course welcome as a pretense for the two of them working together (on the show’s part), but in reality it’s just the fucking bare minimum that THE AUTHORITIES should ALREADY BE FUCKING DOING THEMSELVES
at this point I went to bed and had a very gripping, sexy dream about Veronica and Jughead. Veronica and Jughead
“Damn good coffee”: Hiram floating having to “bring Archie in” on the Lodge Family Tammany Hall is only slightly less absurd than the Federal Bureau of Investigation having already done so. what does Archie need to be brought in on, exactly? he’s just Veronica’s arm candy. he barely knows what a cigar is
while it is STILL ODD that Veronica has done a 180 on her accepting her father’s criminality, she still holds Archie up as a beacon of goodness, because, like I said, shoulders, polos
Jughead’s “order of the Ophidians” as he tapes up the Missing poster is either, so far as I can tell, an extremely obscure MMORPG reference or he’s just calling them snakes, but like, in Latin
Penny didn’t die of gangrene from her blistering wound like on the Oregon trail? probably a plus
FP is in some deep pain here. this is so far beyond his worst fears about Jughead joining the Serpents that he like never even fucking considered—I NEVER FUCKING CONSIDERED IT, IT WAS FUCKING RIDICULOUS
I certainly don’t think Penny’s terms are like, PARTICULARLY OUT OF LINE
ooooh Jughead’s little snipe at his father for fridging Jason!
I DON’T EVEN KNOW WHAT TO DO WITH “YOU WILL BE THE DEATH OF US,” THE ANGUISHED REALIZATION IN FP’S EYES, GLADYS STAY AWAY!!!!!
Tumblr media
I can’t believe the sixth season of The Wire takes place in Riverdale and doesn’t even have Sonja Sohn playing Agent Adams
Alice’s angel wing-white Founding Father blouse and Betty’s textured peach sweater
Hal is REALLY skittish about Chic, considering that HE’S HIS SON, SO FAR AS WE KNOW. but Hal hordes important information until the bitter end, so he probably just knows some shit
The Blossom Whoever the fuck’s spawn: “He’s a stranger. That’s my beef.”
“It’s been ~some time~ since my last confession” is usually the most accurate clocking I could give as well
I love the very dangerous clusters of candles inside the confessional
These students are legally children: NO ONE is helping Veronica. Veronica is trying to “find her thing” like, in the dark, lit by votive candles
I loved the circle of beautiful mob wives drinking wine and talking about how praying to “the Almighty” for “forgiveness” makes them feel better #aspirational
Hiram isn’t fucking around with Mr. Man “disrespecting Pop Tate.” Pop Tate is an angel, doing his best out here in a chaotic world. his poutine is probably great!
Archie’s stuck using the wrong kind of plunger
Poppa Poutine says Hiram lost his “mojo” in “the joint”
is Poppa right? is Hiram weak? if you subtract the Andrews boys, he doesn’t seem to have any problems
The 2001 Josie and the Pussycats movie was a masterpiece: Josie is back with killer witchy earrings, a lovely dress, and a fierce hold on the remainder of her personal agency
of course it’s “Bitter Sweet Symphony” but with harps. you know the Verve doesn’t get any royalties from that song? are the Rolling Stones the worst band in the world?
I LIKE THE SWOOSH FROM LARRY OR WHOEVER AND POPPA BACK TO ARCHIE WATCHING THEM
the back of the church is bathed in purple, the altar is yellow, the monsignor is in BRIGHT PALM SUNDAY RED, and this is what church should have always been like
Fwoopy hair is the best hair: Hermione’s strong-shouldered structured white jacket is amazing and Jughead forgoed his hat, to be respectful
Cheryl’s a chaos angel from hell: slightly strangely, Cheryl isn’t there at all this episode, but what we are truly robbed of is seeing what she would have worn to the confirmation
Veronica has a SUPER-SWEET very light pink/purple manicure!
Summer + Blair = Veronica: you better believe when Veronica was asked if she renounced Satan I was like, IS SHE GOING TO LOOK AT HER FATHER AND STORM OUT OF THAT CHURCH????? I THOUGHT SHE MIGHT!!!!!
instead I got an amazing thematic light show about Veronica choosing to believe in Archie’s unflagging internal compass and following his light (“the light of the Lord”!)
HE GIVES HER A TINY HAPPY NOD WHILE SHE’S THINKING, LIKE “YEAH BABE I KNOW YOU RENOUNCE SATAN!!!!!”
Veronica was rich: Veronica does look like a fucking angel up there
wow, Dilton isn’t DJing the afterparty? weird
why are Betty and Archie standing together AT ALL?
Abuelita is 100% right about pinching Archie’s cheek and Archie goes with it because he is respectful
Jughead eats: Jughead is so tormented he neglects the buffet!!!!!!
Jughead’s suit is very nice. I like the progression of his wearing better and better suits
Betty takes the news of Jughead’s CONFESSION that he “cut” Penny pretty stoically, as she did boil a guy once
POOR JUG IS RIGHT, IT DIDN’T EVEN MATTER!
Closed Captioning tells me the junkyard guy’s name is “JUNKYARD STEVE,” MY MAN
“If only we lived in a town where the answer could be no.”
Sexy, aesthetic Southside: Jughead in his leather jacket OVER HIS SUIT JACKET is pretty good!
“BY ANY CHANCE WAS THIS GENTLEMAN TALL?” OH MY GOD!!!! CASE FUCKING CLOSED BOYS!!!!!!!
Hermione hauling Veronica back for the photographer
Archie looking up from behind the closing art deco elevator doors
The female gaze: Archie is of course so handsome and perfectly proportioned in his suit. his handsomeness is such a given that I take it wholly for granted, like how when not suffering an allergy attack I can breathe from both nostrils but when one hits and I’m sneezing up my guts I’m like, air coming in from both nostrils? true bliss, I’ll never forget it again
God, did he get rid of his tailored cranberry Blossom suit? not the WORST crime committed in Riverdale, but probably worthy of eviction
Fifth period is AP English: as @hangingonyourwords noted, Archie knowing the word “coup” is VERY surprising! GOOD, ARCHIE
Hiram Lodge is, I think, listening to that song from Carmen while pouring himself a stiff drink, the massive Rory Gilmore portrait of Veronica over one shoulder and the blue light of an antipodean sea streaming in over the other, using a rotary phone to call in A MURDER
Tall Boy having to suffer interrogation by Jughead, whom he surely must have always despised, is his final indignity
Jughead calls Betty “one of us,” which has not been given enough fanfare by ANYONE in the show! Betty is ONE HUNDRED PERCENT as much a Serpent as Jughead, unless Jughead’s mother is a Serpent, except that she hasn’t had to shout their stupid rules into someone’s face yet
I’m writing a scene where it’s gay.: “YOU HAVEN’T ANSWERED MY SON’S QUESTION.”
the poor Serpents have been twisted around rich northsiders’ fingers for so long that they don’t have any fucking idea what to be doing when NOT at the behest of a blackmailer or bribery. I don’t know what it means to be a Serpent except that it means you’re poor and comely. and VERY civic-minded
“You’re a Judas, Tall Boy. And an idiot.”
Gay.: Sweet Pea raises both his arms to vote
FP’s gonna run Tall Boy out of town. a word of advice: one town over is not far enough
hell, Archie’s seen all those mob movies too! he and Jughead must’ve watched them together while Jughead was sleeping in his bedroom
Archie’s speech to Veronica is GOOD, ARCHIE, and what Veronica gets out just reinforces my thought that Hiram is literally starting a second town under Mayor McCoy’s nose, which would concern me expect that it has been definitely shown that even after things are executed on Riverdale I confuse myself and am invariably exactly wrong
I would probably kiss Archie too if he looked at me like that and said “I’m with you,” which I think explains Betty
HAHAAAAAAAAAAA OKAY!!!!!! SOMETHING IN THE WATER IN FP’S TRAILER
Jughead’s suspenders? a startling plus!
I like the quietness of “Maybe we can ask Veronica on Monday.” it reminded me of Archie’s face-saving some-other-time-definitely promise to go to the library with Jughead
“Maybe we should just investigate quietly until we know more.”
BLESSED BE THE CHILDREN and Jughead’s brusque scoff at himself for saying “my darkness”
in a move that the last few episodes haven’t shown him as having enough sense to make, Jughead puts his hand, not on Betty’s hand, but directly on the skirt of her dress
also Jughead knows that dress zippers have a point where you think it’s gone all the way down but really you’ve got a little further to go otherwise you can’t get the waistline over the hips? Jug’s got a little bit of game going on!
Tumblr media
I like the silhouette of Jughead’s Adam’s apple
while Jughead is doing an excellent job delicately checking in with Betty’s sacral chakra, with his bare hand, I don’t want to overlook either his own gently crossed ankles as he holds her or his AMAZING SOCKS
when Betty tells him she needs to tell him something, he EXHALES a “What?” before he says “What is it?” WHOOP
she is missing a pretty sick meatloaf or pork of some more at her mother’s dinner table
I didn’t think there was a physiognomically scarier white guy around than Chic himself, but I was wrong!!!! it’s definitely that guy at the door!!!!!!
oh shit, Archie sort of got somebody (else) killed. this is like when Jughead didn’t mean to but definitely got somebody’s face beaten in by Tall Boy and Serpent Baby—holy shit what happened to that kid!!!! where did Serpent Baby go???
Certified pedigree: OKAY SENDING THE STATUE HEAD TO HIRAM LODGE VIA A CONFIRMATION “PRESENT” TO HIS DAUGHTER IS A PRETTY GREAT MOVE. I ASSUME THIS WAS YOU, FP JONES. FP IS REALLY GOOD AT PUTTING WORDLESS THREATENING MESSAGES INTO BOXES
in the shot bingo of Riverdale, the middle box would have to be Betty coming through her front door and pausing because she hears something suspicious
Mädchen Amick, MÄDCHEN AMICK: the squishy sound effect of the rags on the wet floor? her perfect hair? her bright blue turtleneck? “Elizabeth, did you lock the front door?” Alice is already three steps ahead!!! Alice Alice Alice!!!!!
Alice and FP have now both cleaned up somebody else’s murder’s cranial blood (I’m assuming Chic clocked this guy, which means it was probably Melody), further proof they belong together
Please protect Betty: Betty fucking Jughead probably saved her life
Next week: Cheryl shoots a bow and arrow!!! into my heart!!!!!!!!!

your arms around me, and i’m home
Tumblr media
pairing: riley matthews & lucas friar  word count: 2,034 prompt: “day six: hugging - just let the kids hug gosh dang it” written for: rucas fanfic week 2017 summary: because home isn’t always four walls and a roof, sometimes it’s two arms that keep you warm and a heart that loves you.  notes: this has been a scene that has been stuck in my head for literal months now and i finally sat down and wrote it and honestly?? i’m so pleased with the results. this actually takes place in my sign of the times fic universe, during riley and lucas’ senior year of college, so it’s almost a preview of the future of sorts, but oh well. this is very fluffy and heartwarming and i’m really proud of it. please enjoy!
“Hey, what did your mom want?”
Lucas didn’t respond right away, and Riley looked up from the cereal she had been eating. She smiled when she saw Lucas standing in the doorway, a nervous look on his face. They had been woken up that morning by Lucas’ phone ringing, his mom telling him that he needed to get over there. She hadn’t offered much of an explanation, but Riley had still been half asleep when Lucas slipped out the door.
Truthfully, she still wasn’t fully awake as he was coming back through the front door twenty minutes later.
“She wanted to give me this.” Lucas said, the hesitation evident in his tone. Riley crinkled her eyebrows together as she looked at the item in his hand. Her jaw dropped when she realized exactly what the piece of paper he was gripping tightly in his fingers was.
“Is that what I think it is?” She asked, standing up from the table and rushing over to him. He nodded, the closer she was to him, the easier it was to see the nerves written all over his face. Riley could hear her heart beating in her eardrums and she assumed that if she was this nervous, it was only worse for him.
“Yep.” He said simply, taking a sharp intake of breath. His breath was shaky and when he exhaled, his hand started shaking. Riley grabbed it, and dragged him over to the kitchen table, hoping that if he was sitting, she wouldn’t so afraid that he was going to pass out on the spot. “I don’t know if I can open this.”
“What?” Riley asked, squeezing his free hand that wasn’t gripping that letter so hard his knuckles were going white. “Lucas, you have to open this.” She said softly, grazing the letter with her hand that wasn’t holding his.
“Last time I opened a letter from them, it didn’t exactly end well.” Lucas said quietly. His voice was small and the sound of it broke Riley’s heart. “I feel better this time around, but I can’t help but be nervous.” He said, giving her a forced smile.
“Do you want to open it alone?” Riley asked, moving her hand from the letter to his shoulder, rubbing it in a small, circular motion. “I can leave if you would rather be by yourself.”
“No.” Lucas shook his head, looking at her. “If it’s good news, you’re the only one I want to share it with. If it’s bad news, then…” Lucas trailed off, gulping, his teeth digging into his bottom lip.
“It’s going to be good news.” Riley said, squeezing his shoulder. “You’ve worked so hard for this, you’ve had an almost perfect GPA all throughout college, you got amazing recommendations from your professors, your job as an RA looks amazing on your application. You’re going to get in.”
“Well that’s what I thought last time.”
“This isn’t last time. Lucas, you’re the best candidate for their graduate program, you’re going to get in.” It hurt Riley to watch Lucas not believe in himself like this, but she also would always be there to tell him otherwise. “This is going to be good news.”
There was a moment of silence between them, and Riley gave him an encouraging smile. She saw him relax slightly, his smile becoming less forced and his hand loosening his grip on the letter.
“What are you guys doing?” Her mom’s voice said suddenly from the doorway of the kitchen, her father behind her. Riley groaned slightly, watching Lucas snap his eyes up from the letter, which he was about to open, to her mom and dad.
“Lucas got his letter from Davis.” Riley said, giving Lucas’ hand another squeeze and sending her parents a smile. “He was just about to open it.” She encouraged, nudging Lucas lightly with her elbow.
“Oh.” Her mom said, a smile on her face. Her parents both entered the kitchen, standing opposite them on the other side of the table. Riley snuck a glance at Lucas, and while he still looked nervous, he did look a little more relaxed. “This is the big one, huh?”
“Yep.” Lucas replied, letting out a shaky breath as he twirled the letter in his fingers. Her parents shared a look before giving him matching encouraging smiles.
“We can all leave you alone if you want, I know you just said no, but, I promise. If you want to be alone, you can be alone.” Riley repeated her earlier statement, wondering if her parents being here would make him even more nervous. But he shook his head, looking more determined now.
“No.” He said, his voice firm and a gleam in his eye that made Riley smile. “No matter what news is in this envelope, I want you by my side when I open it. All of you.” He said, giving all three of the Matthews members around the table a smile.
The next few moments were silent, and suspenseful. But, Riley felt nothing but positivity. She knew better than anyone how hard Lucas had worked, and how much passion he had put into his work for the last four years. She had no doubt in her mind that the letter in his hand was nothing but good news.
She watched Lucas’ hands running themselves under the crease of the envelope. Her heart was beating loudly in her chest, beating against her ribcage, she only imagined if this was how she was feeling, how Lucas must be feeling. She gripped his shoulder, gulping when he pulled the letter into his hands and began reading.
It was a tense couple of seconds as she watched Lucas’ eyes run along the first couple lines of the letter. When he didn’t react after about ten seconds, Riley’s heart sank and she began to fear the worse. Sharing a panicked look with her parents, she began to say something, before she saw the smile that broke out on Lucas’ face as his eyes met hers.
“I got in.”
Those words were enough to jump Riley from her seat, an excited scream escaping from her lips before she could ever process what was happening. Lucas too stood from his seat, and Riley couldn’t even contain the excitement that was running through her veins, so much so that she began to jump up and down, springing herself into Lucas’ arms.
“I knew it. I knew you could do it.” She said into his shoulder, squeezing her arms around his neck. She couldn’t wipe the smile off her face and as she stood there, wrapped up in Lucas, she felt nothing but pride in her heart for the boy in her arms.
She could vaguely hear her parents words of congratulations behind her, and she knew she had to let go of him, let her parents hug him, but she couldn’t bring herself to. She knew how much Lucas had worked to get to this moment, and she might have been biased, but there was no one on this planet that deserved this more than Lucas did.
When she finally managed to pry herself away from him, she kept her hand gripped on his sweatshirt as he hugged her parents, unable to wipe the smile of her face. When he had done the rounds with her parents, graciously, but also embarrassingly accepting their congrats and large words of praise, she pulled him back to her, wrapping her arms around his waist.
She felt him kiss the top of her head and in that moment, all was good.
Later that night, after a celebratory dinner with her parents, brother and his mom, Lucas and Riley lay in her, their, bed, sleepily reflecting on the day's events. Lucas had been slightly apprehensive when her parents had insisted on taking them all out for a fancy dinner, but they hadn’t taken no for an answer, and while Grace hadn’t really understood the levity of the situation, Riley could see the pride she had for her son twinkling from her eyes.
“I can’t believe in nine months I’ll be in California.” Lucas muttered, his fingers running through her hair. She smiled against his t shirt, pressing a kiss to his heart.
“I know. I knew you would be.” She said softly, looking up at him. She had her chin propped on his chest, unable to wipe the grin off of her face. “I’m coming with you, y’know.”
The words spilled from her mouth before she could fully process them, but she knew that they were nothing but truth. She had known for years that she wanted to spend her life with him, and while they had survived four years of college together, she was done spending time apart. She wanted their life together to begin sooner, rather than later.
“What are you talking about?” Lucas asked softly, sitting up. Sighing, she lifted herself off of his chest and sat cross legged in front of him.
“I’m coming with you to California.” She repeated, this time with much more determination and confidence in her voice. She knew that Lucas was only confused because they hadn’t talked about this at all, but she needed him to know that she really meant what she was saying.
“Riley, I can’t ask you to do that. You can’t put your life on hold for me.” Lucas said, shaking his head slightly, looking down at his hands. “I can’t ask you to leave your home for me.”
Riley nodded, mulling over his words. New York might have been where she had spent her entire life, it was where the roof over her head had always been, her family was here, the last twenty two years of her life had taken place in New York. But, it wasn’t her home, not anymore. Her home was sitting in front of her, sandy blonde hair and bright green eyes that reflected the sun, with arms that had always made her feel safe and the biggest heart she had ever known.
Lucas Friar was her home, and she would follow him anywhere.
“I wouldn’t be putting my life on hold, Lucas. I don’t even know what the next step in my life is. But I do know one thing, the only thing that I want is to be with you.” Riley said with a smile, squeezing his hand. “We’ve spent the last four years on opposite sides of the country, I don’t want to do that anymore, I can’t.”
Taking a deep breath, she leaned forward and pressed a kiss to his lips. She felt him smile against her lips and while she knew her words would do little to qualm his worries about supposedly stopping her from living her life, even though it wouldn’t much of a life without him, the moment still felt special and monumental.
“You said I would be leaving my home, but I would be going home.”
Lucas tilted his head slightly, a smile playing on his lips. She returned it, kissing him again. Lucas took this opportunity to nuzzle his nose against hers, pressing a kiss to the corner of her mouth as she pulled away.
“We’ve been apart for too long, I think it’s about time we started that life together that we always talked about, don’t you?” Riley asked, a slight hint of amusement and teasing present in her voice.
Lucas didn’t say anything, but the smile on his face was enough to tell her that she was about as ready to start this next adventure of their as she was. Giggling, she pressed a kiss to his cheek, happiness coursing through her veins, making her feel lighter and happier than she had felt in months, years even.
And as she fell into his chest, and felt his arms securely wrap themselves around her waist, she felt like she was coming home. She never wanted to live without that feeling.
So, it was in that moment that Riley Matthews decided that she was never going to live another moment without him (besides the final semester of college, but that was non negotiable at this point). They were in this for life.
Together.

The SF Hit List The Best New Restaurants In San Francisco added to Google Docs
The SF Hit List The Best New Restaurants In San Francisco
Wondering where you should be eating in San Francisco right now? You’re in the right place. The Infatuation Hit List is your guide to the city’s best new restaurants.
And when we say “best new restaurants,” we mean it. Because we’ve tried every single one of these places - and we’ve also left off many spots that simply aren’t as worthy of your time and money.
The Hit List is our record of every restaurant that’s opened in the past year that we’d highly recommend you try. This guide is sorted chronologically, so at the top you’ll find our latest entries to this list (the newest spots), and as you keep scrolling you’ll find the places that are on the older side - but are great enough that we still haven’t stopped talking about them.
New to The Hit List (as of 2/26): Aziza, Shake Shack, Sushi Shio
The Spots  Sabrina Bot Aziza $$$$ 5800 Geary Blvd
After a three-year hiatus, Aziza (from the people behind Mourad) reopened in its original Geary Blvd. spot with a new look. The Moroccan restaurant now feels like a luxury resort with raised ceilings, palm-leaf wallpaper, and a long, blue-tiled bar. And while Aziza looks like a completely new restaurant, the food is as great as ever. Start with the set of three spreads (butter bean with spicy merguez, piquillo-almond, and lebni with roe) with fresh flatbread before moving on to their larger plates like the tangy roasted cauliflower and chicken basteeya that’s full of spices and ground nuts.
 Shake Shack $ $ $ $ American ,  Burgers  in  Cow Hollow $$$$ 3060 Fillmore St Not
Rated
Yet
The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Boyz II Men aren’t local, but we’ll still rush to their shows whenever they come to town. We feel the same way about Shake Shack. The massive chain from New York City is now serving their great burgers and dessert in Cow Hollow. The classic Shackburger is still the best thing on the menu, and they have Bay Area-specific items - like the California Cold Rush ice cream concrete with B Patisserie kouign amann pieces - you need to order no matter what. And just like every Shake Shack in the country, go expecting a line.
Sushi Shio $$$$ 206 Valencia St
If sushi restaurants were Hemsworth brothers, Sushi Shio would be Liam. It’s not over the top and expensive (Chris), nor is it solely an approachable, everyday restaurant you settle on out of convenience (hey, Luke). Like Liam, this Mission spot is the perfect in-between: A casual place you can drop in for a solid sushi roll (we like the Valencia with yellowtail, avocado, and walu), or a special occasion (they have pricier omakase for $115). Everything is so good that you’ll want to come here every chance you get.
 um.ma $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Richmond $$$$ 1220 9th Ave Not
Rated
Yet
San Francisco doesn’t have too many places to hang out outdoors - which is understandable (thanks, fog). But now we have another great addition in the form of Um.ma. This Korean restaurant in the Inner Sunset has a huge back patio with big tables you’ll want to sit at when the sun is shining. The food alone is worth the trip though. We especially like the mandu guk soup that’s full of rich pork and shrimp dumplings, and the mackerel with crispy skin and perfectly charred meat.
Scott Granlund Daily Driver $$$$ 1 Ferry Building
We could hang out and get work done at the Daily Driver in Dogpatch all day long, but their second location is all about convenience - which is great if you’re in a rush on your way to work. It’s in the Ferry Building, and has a pared down menu that’s mostly bagels, gravlax, and spreads, plus coffee to grab before you inevitably have face your computer for eight straight hours.
Family Cafe $$$$ 362 Columbus Ave
There aren’t a huge number of places in North Beach that make us want to stop, stay a while, and maybe make a new friend. But Family Cafe is one of those spots. This small, two-story Japanese-style cafe on Columbus Ave. (with ties to Soba Ichi in Oakland) is delightful - family portraits and vintage mirrors hang on the walls, turquoise tiles add a bright pop of color, and there’s an intimate feel here that makes you want to take your time eating your katsu, tonkatsu, or veggie sandwich ($14-16) served on Japanese milk bread. Family Cafe is open for lunch and dinner (until 8pm), but we prefer going during the day when the light makes everything feel warm and inviting.
 Paige Green Tartine $$$$ 1226 9th Ave
Tartine Bakeries are slowly taking over the world, but as long as they keep giving us open, airy cafes and incredible pastries, we’ll keep coming. This new location in the Inner Sunset makes the list because it’s, well, Tartine, and also because it gives us another spot to get our fill of chewy jam bars and almond frangipane croissants. We’re not complaining.
 Hina Yakitori $ $ $ $ Japanese  in  Nopa $$$$ 808 Divisadero St 8.5 /10
Hina’s tasting menu is almost entirely chicken, and while eating 15 courses of the same thing could get old, every dish at Hina is exciting. Most of what you get are chicken skewers that are carefully grilled over coals, and topped with everything from a squeeze of lime to pink peppercorns. No matter what though, it’s all delicious.
Sorry—looks like you screwed up that email address

In this city, comfort food restaurants are opening up faster than Blue Bottle coffee shops. One recent addition to the list is Dear Inga in the Mission, which serves fantastic Eastern European dishes like smoky kielbasa and cabbage stuffed with pork and rice. The space is also beautiful and modern with wooden light fixtures and high ceilings. This is the kind of place you’ll want to spend all night sharing plates and drinking cocktails and wine.
 Prubechu $ $ $ $ Guamanian  in  Mission $$$$ 2224 Mission St # A Not
Rated
Yet
Prubechu in the Mission is officially back - and giving Farmhouse Kitchen’s curry-smothered braised short ribs a run for its money. Their garlic and soy-braised version is sweet, sour, sticky, and reason enough alone to check this place out. But you also don’t want to miss their other fantastic dishes, like the shrimp pancakes with corn and ginger.
 Mahila $ $ $ $ Malaysian  in  Noe Valley $$$$ 1320 Castro St Not
Rated
Yet
There are a lot of great restaurants in Noe Valley, including Mahila. This Malay spot serves fantastic sweet potato puffs with onion chutney, spicy turmeric noodles with shrimp, and coconut roti covered with mustard seeds, peanuts, and greens. The space is small (we don’t recommend going here with more than four people), but it’s a great spot for a midweek date or a casual catch-up.
Grace Sager Little Creatures $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Pizza  in  Mission Bay $$$$ 1000 3rd St Not
Rated
Yet
This new Australian-based brewery in Mission Bay is quite large and has projection screens around the bar so you can come drink and watch sports with a group of friends. Aside from beer, they also have a menu of bar food we like a lot - with things like giant caesar salads that are larger than that stack of newspapers in your garage, and pizzas with a cracker-crust and toppings like spicy merguez sausage and ricotta cheese.
Burma Club $ $ $ $ Burmese  in  Financial District ,  Soma $$$$ 8 Mint Plz Not
Rated
Yet
The new Burma Superstar in SoMa actually feels like a nightclub with its tall ceilings, huge bar, and a second level that looks like a VIP lounge. But instead of people crowding around the bar and dancing to so-so house music, they’re eating the same great food you can get at the other Burma locations, like the tea leaf salad and rich curries with beef. If you’ve got clients in from out of town who want to stick close to Union Square, bring them here to give them a quick dose of real San Francisco before you get back to pitching them on expanding your partnership.
 Krescent Carasso Palette Tea House $ $ $ $ Chinese ,  Dim Sum  in  Fisherman's Wharf ,  Marina $$$$ 900 N Point St 8.3 /10
There aren’t a ton of reasons we jump at the opportunity to visit a tourist trap, but Palette Tea House is one of them. This is a new dim sum place in Ghirardelli Square from the people behind Dragon Beaux in the Richmond, and the dumplings here are as fun to eat as they are fantastic. There are lobster ha gow with pipettes of butter to inject into each dumpling, and black taro puffs filled with pork, shrimp, and duck that are shaped like swans. If that’s not enough, the plates look like painting palettes and have little dents on them to hold the chili oil, Chinese mustard, and other condiments they bring to your table.
 Tartine Bakery $ $ $ $ Cafe/Bakery  in  Berkeley $$$$ 2600 Durant Ave.
Tartine Bakeries are starting to pop up like rabbits, but that doesn’t make their pastries any less good. This new one is on the ground floor of the Graduate Hotel near the Cal campus, and is great for a quick grab-and-go coffee or morning bun. If you’re not in the mood for something sweet, try one of their savory scones.
 Emma K Morris Mama $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Adams Point $$$$ 388 Grand Ave. Not
Rated
Yet
Going to Mama in Adams Point in Oakland is like scooting into your friend’s breakfast nook to recover from a hangover over eggs and coffee - but instead of breakfast, you’re getting a delicious Italian dinner. This place does a three-course prix fixe dinner that changes weekly for only $30. And on any given night, you can get things like a salad with roasted delicata, pomegranate, and pear, beet ravioli with spaghetti squash and ricotta, and polenta cake with baked apples for dessert. If you’re looking for more of a classic, the spaghetti with Mama’s tomato sugo, beef, and pork is amazing and never leaves the menu.
 Niku Steakhouse $ $ $ $ American ,  Japanese ,  Steaks  in  Design District $$$$ 61 Division St 9.0 /10
This place in the Design District specializes in Japanese A5 wagyu, which is the highest quality beef you can get on this planet (and at least three others). The meat is cooked over a charcoal grill that’s in the middle of the dining room and has a char on the outside that’s so good you’ll consider giving up backyard cookouts for life. They also have less expensive steaks than the $125 per four-ounce cuts of wagyu, like giant tomahawks and New York strips that are still higher quality than just about anything else you’ll find in the city. Make sure to get some sides and small plates like the bone marrow and salmon tartare too - they’re just as good.
 Mago $ $ $ $ American  in  Piedmont Avenue $$$$ 3762 Piedmont Ave Not
Rated
Yet
Located on Piedmont Avenue in Oakland in what used to be a popular pizza place, Mago is a new neighborhood spot that specializes in pasta, soups, and shareable plates made from seasonal ingredients over a wood fire. If you come in for lunch or dinner, you won’t end up spending too much either (dishes run in the $8 to $24 range). The menu changes weekly, but you can order things like beer-battered delicata, barbecued carrots, fried brown rice with chanterelles and egg, and hand-cut pappardelle with pork ragu and Calabrian chili. They also usually have one larger dish to split like grilled skirt steak, plus great wine and cocktails to pair with everything.
 Nari $ $ $ $ Thai  in  Japantown $$$$ 1625 Post St Not
Rated
Yet
Nari is on the ground floor of the Kabuki Hotel in Japantown, but from the size of this glassed-in Thai restaurant and the amount of plant life in here, it feels more like you’re eating in a geodesic dome. This place is from the same people as Kin Khao in Union Square and the food is just as good, but Nari is much larger and works better for dinner than lunch. There are things like betel leaves filled with coconut, nectarines, and cured trout roe; super spicy mushrooms in puffed rice; and lamb shanks in rich curry. All of it is meant to be shared, and this is a good place to come with a small group so you can try a lot of things.
Square Pie Guys $ $ $ $ American ,  Bar Food ,  Pizza  in  Soma $$$$ 1077 Mission St Not
Rated
Yet
If it was only the pizza at Square Pie Guys that was as good as it is, we’d still eat here a lot, but we’d also come here for everything else on the menu even if we weren’t in the mood for pizza. The menu reads more like a sports bar’s than a pizzeria’s, with everything from Szechuan dry-fried chicken wings to burgers to their chocolate chip cookie sundae that any third-grader would brag about eating on their birthday, and all of it is great. But still, the Detroit-style pan pizza is the best thing here with toppings ranging from pepperoni to corn with ricotta cream and a thick chewy and caramelized crust. If you had a long day at work in SoMa, this is a good spot to go to.
Al’s Deli $ $ $ $ American ,  Middle Eastern  in  Mission $$$$ 598 Guerrero St 7.6 /10
At this point, a lot of the best restaurants in the city have opened casual offshoots for quick meals and take-out (RT Rotisserie, Flour + Water Pizzeria), and while we love going to Al’s Place for special occasions, we’re glad Al’s Deli exists for everything else. Instead of serving mostly vegetables and meats on the side, here it’s mostly about rotisserie chicken and brisket. You can get either as a platter or in a sandwich, but if you’re here for a quick dinner, the sandwiches are the way to go. The chicken version is heavily seasoned with shawarma spices and comes with spicy schug sauce and cucumber salad, and the smokey brisket has hardboiled eggs and french fries packed into the pita too.
Gioia Pizzeria $ $ $ $ Pizza  in  Hayes Valley $$$$ 579 Hayes St Not
Rated
Yet
Gioia used to have an outpost in Russian Hill, but then they moved to Hayes and opened this smaller, much more streamlined spot. It’s mostly a slice shop without much seating, so you’re best off getting your food to go, which isn’t a problem because everything comes on paper plates anyway. We like the margherita, which is topped with thick slices of tomato, but our favorite is the garlicky mushroom. Whatever you get, the crust is crispy on the bottom, chewy around the edges, and a big slice will only run you $4.25, making this possibly the cheapest and fastest place to get a bite in the neighborhood.
 Daily Driver $ $ $ $ American ,  Sandwiches ,  Bagels  in  Dogpatch $$$$ 2535 3rd Street Not
Rated
Yet
With its huge space, giant U-shaped counter, and balconies surrounding the main floor, Daily Driver looks more like a club than a breakfast spot, but this new place in Dogpatch serves bagels instead of forcing you to pay an obscene cover to hear a DJ play far too many Jaden and Willow Smith songs. The bagels are chewy with a good crunch on the outside, wood-fired fresh every morning, and come with things like lox and homemade cheese. It’s a good spot to come for a coffee date, especially if you’re planning on eating something. The only drawback is that you’ll end up paying $15 for a bagel with pastrami and sauerkraut. Still, though, they’re great bagels.
 Elda $ $ $ $ Latin ,  Bar Food  in  Mission $$$$ 3198 16th St Not
Rated
Yet
Elda is a bar in the Mission that makes a mix of Caribbean and Latin food. It can get loud inside, so it’s best to come with your friends you know well enough that you don’t have to catch every single word of their story from their Tahoe trip to understand them. If you’re really hungry, you can make a meal out of coming here, but all of the plates are small and good for a quick snack if not. For sharing, go for the sikil pak crudite that’s like spicy hummus made from pumpkin seeds and the summer squash tacos with shiitake mushroom chicharon on fresh corn tortillas. Of the drinks, we like the Vampiros with mezcal and the Hot Stepper with rye, grapefruit, and hot honey that are both spicy but refreshing.
 Flour + Water Pizzeria $ $ $ $ Pizza ,  Italian  in  Mission $$$$ 700 Valencia St 8.7 /10
Flour + Water is one of our favorite restaurants in the city, but unlike the pasta-centric original, the new location on Valencia focuses mainly on pizza. There are ten different pizzas to choose from on the main menu - split between red and white - and the flavor combinations can be just as interesting as some of the pastas served at the main restaurant, while still leaving room for things like a classic Margherita. We like the speck pie with braised cabbage, but no matter what you go with make sure to order their homemade ranch to dip the crust in. Aside from pizza, they have great meatballs with prosciutto, mozzarella sticks that are better than any you remember from your childhood, and soft serve you can order from a to-go window along with a special giant slice that changes regularly.
Mamo $ $ $ $ Venezuelan  in  Marina $$$$ 3659 Buchanan Street Not
Rated
Yet
Even though Mamo is in a pretty quiet part of the Marina, the food at this small Venezuelan restaurant is worth going a few blocks out of your way for before a night out. Happy Hour (Tuesday-Friday from 3-6pm) is the best time to come here, with $2 off beers and a small menu of things like pork arepas (each order includes two of them) that are filled with enough meat to be a full meal. If you get stuck at the office and miss the specials though, get the crispy chicken thigh served over polenta with olives and preserved lemon.
 Susie Lacocque Beit Rima $ $ $ $ Middle Eastern  in  Castro ,  Mission $$$$ 138 Church St 8.2 /10
The kitchen at Beit Rima is in the middle of a long, skinny dining room, which makes it look like an old diner - but instead of burgers and Denver omelets, this place serves great Middle Eastern food. There are a bunch of mezze items that come in large portions you’ll want to share, like the slightly smoky baba ganoush, and no matter which ones you get, you need to get some of the hand-kneaded bread that’s absolutely covered in za’atar. If you want a larger dish, order the whole fried branzino. The skin is crispy and it comes covered in mint and onions that brighten it up - and make sure to try the homemade hot sauce that comes on the side.
 Ed Anderson Che Fico Alimentari $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Nopa $$$$ 834 Divisadero St. 8.4 /10
If we were super famous and felt like being seen, we would go to Che Fico for a big meal. But if there was a night when we wanted to hide from the cameras, we would go to their place downstairs, Che Fico Alimentari. It’s much smaller and darker than the original and feels like a hideout from the world full of Italian food. The menu focuses mostly on smaller things to snack on like mozzarella with speck ham or cured anchovies, suppli rice balls, and incredible focaccia. They also have a list of cured meats that are good on their own, and even better in dishes like their spicy amatriciana that’s full of guanciale.
Little Gem $ $ $ $ American  in  Cow Hollow $$$$ 2184 Union St Not
Rated
Yet
Little Gem on Union Street feels like some sort of restaurant from the future when the science of optimization and the art of feng shui are one and the same. It’s all shiny and white, there are lots of plants, and you get the feeling that everyone in this place loves to listen to whale sounds in their spare time. The menu is pretty health-centric with things like broth and green juice available, but they also have larger dishes like bibimbap with seasonal vegetables, brown rice, and salmon tartare. It’s the kind of food you try to cook for yourself on weeknights when you want to be more healthy, only this place is actually good at it.
Daeho $ $ $ $ Korean  in  Japantown $$$$ 1620 Post St Not
Rated
Yet
Daeho is a Korean place that recently opened up in Japantown. It’s small and gets packed quickly once it opens at 5pm, but you can add your name to the waitlist online and go grab a drink somewhere close by while you wait. The communal tables here all seat around six people, so unless you love sitting next to strangers, you should come with a group. The cauldrons of beef soup are large enough for three to four people, and we like the braised short rib one with cheese on top that’s more meat than broth.
Kevin McCullough The Vault $ $ $ $ American ,  Bar Food  in  Financial District $$$$ 555 California St Not
Rated
Yet
The Vault, a new spot from the people behind Trestle in the basement of the Bank of America building in FiDi, feels like it’s part of a private club, one where briefcases outnumber people when it’s busy. The food comes in small portions that are good for when you don’t want dinner or drinks to drag on longer than your weekly conference call about phone etiquette. We like the short rib with Cowgirl Creamery cheese foam, but if you’re here with someone you know pretty well, order a few more cocktails before you go for the chicken nuggets and compare childhood stories about hitting McDonald’s after soccer practice.
 The Shota $ $ $ $ Japanese  in  Financial District $$$$ 115 Sansome St 8.7 /10
The Shota is a Japanese tasting menu spot in the heart of the Financial District. Without alcohol or supplements, the 15-course dinner here is $150 per person, but there’s one chef for every three or four people who will periodically do things like pull out a small model of a tuna to show where each cut of fish comes from - so it’s a special meal that’s worth it. The mix of kaiseki and sushi dishes includes things like incredibly soft tuna belly nigiri and uni pate with yuzu marmalade on a profiterole that’s so good you’ll wish there had been about eight more. Because it’s all bar seating, it’s best to come here with one person for something big like an anniversary or to celebrate finally figuring out how to return your cable box to Comcast.
 Audrey Ma Noosh $ $ $ $ Mediterranean ,  Middle Eastern  in  Fillmore $$$$ 2001 Fillmore St 8.3 /10
This bright new spot on Fillmore serves Mediterranean food, and while you could come to Noosh for drinks and a bunch of dips like muhammara and baba ghanoush, they also have things like giant pita sandwiches stuffed with eggplant and a Turkish flatbread with kale and mushrooms if you want to sit down for a full meal. The single-file line system is a little awkward, but once you get to your table, everything is uphill. Plus, when the weather is nice they open the giant windows - though the whitewashed walls and high ceilings make you feel like you’re on a Mediterranean vacation even without a breeze going through the dining room.
Everdene $ $ $ $ Bar Food  in  Soma $$$$ Rooftop of Virgin Hotel San Francisco, 250 4th Street Not
Rated
Yet
Spacemen were the first to figure out that the higher up you are, the less you have to worry about anything on the ground. But instead of making space travel accessible to people who want to relax and have a fun weekend, people started building rooftop bars instead, and Everdene on top of the Virgin Hotel is the newest one in San Francisco. The majority of the space is covered by a roof that, combined with the glass-panel railings, does a good job stopping the wind from whipping 12 stories above ground, which isn’t the most ideal thing to deal with while you’re trying to enjoy a cocktail and a charcuterie board from their small menu. When it’s sunny, you can step out from under cover and sit at one of the spots running along the edge of the rooftop. Though if you can’t find a seat, there are plenty of high-tops and small tables to put your drinks down if you just want to stand in the sun and take in the views from high above Yerba Buena Park.
Sarah Felker Fiorella Polk Street $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Russian Hill $$$$ 2238 Polk St Not
Rated
Yet
We love the original Fiorella in the Richmond, and the new one on Polk Street makes food that’s just as good, in a larger space so you’ll have a better chance of getting a table when you walk in with a few friends. The pizza crust here is light and airy and would make pocket lint seem like a passable topping, though thankfully it’s topped here with things like clams and guanciale. Fill out the table with a few dishes from the antipasti section, especially the butter beans with kale that’s in the running for our new favorite small plate.
Amanda Chett Lee Moongate Lounge $ $ $ $ Bar Food ,  Chinese  in  Chinatown $$$$ 28 Waverly Pl
Moongate Lounge is the new cocktail bar from the people behind Mister Jiu’s. Its located on top of the main restaurant and feels like somewhere billionaires would grab a few cocktails and casually discuss things like arbitrage or gifting someone a hostile takeover for their child’s 10th birthday. The cocktails are all creative and delicious - we like the Titan with scotch, barolo chinato, tea, and toasted brown rice powder on the rim and the Start of Spring with vodka and peas that’s what all green juice should aspire to taste like. The food is mostly bar snacks like spicy peanuts with Sichuan chilies and tiny anchovies and “chickens in a spacesuit,” their version of pigs in a blanket with chicken sausage, lemon aioli, and pickled onion. If you’re here with more than one other person, it’s worth making a reservation, but if you just want a quick drink, you can cycle into a few seats at the bar.
 Verjus $ $ $ $ Spanish ,  French ,  Tapas  in  Financial District $$$$ 550 Washington St 8.0 /10
Verjus is a wine bar in Jackson Square that also doubles as a bottle shop. This place is huge and split into two rooms - one feels more like a restaurant and the other is a shop with ceiling-high bookshelves that hold all the bottles they serve and sell (you can drink in either). The food here is good, but it’s really there to give you something to snack on while you drink the wine you bought as a gift and then decided to try just to make sure its fit to give as a present. The menu changes, but includes a mix of Spanish and French things, like tortilla espagnole, croquettes, and pate en croute, which is made with more meats than we can count, cherries, and pistachios. Come with a few friends after work or on a double date and get a few things to try while you have a few glasses of wine. And maybe get another bottle on the way out to actually give as a gift.
The Pawn Shop $ $ $ $ Spanish ,  Tapas  in  Soma $$$$ 993 Mission St Not

San Francisco doesn’t have a lot of secret bars, and it’s not hard to find the ones that do exist - they probably realize that you need actual customers to survive. Pawn Shop in Soma is another “secret” spot, but instead of having inventive drinks or a constantly changing passcode to get in, it’s primarily an actual restaurant. When you walk in, you’re greeted by a wig-wearing pawnbroker named Jerry who leads you through the ridiculously decorated “pawn shop” up front and into a windowless room that feels like a hidden cabaret bar, with a peacock-colored glowing bar and stained glass on the walls. There are no cocktails here, but the wine list is solid and goes with the tapas they serve, like pan con tomate and serrano ham. And if you want more than just snacks, go for the pulpo a la plancha. After you’ve spent enough time here to justify the potentially long wait to get inside, head back out through the pawn shop and thank Jerry for showing you the back room where he keeps all the good stuff.
 Vive La Tarte $ $ $ $ Cafe/Bakery  in  Noe Valley $$$$ 4026 24th St Not

Birthdays are synonymous with cake, but you have to wait the entire day before you get any. If you need celebratory pastries right after you wake up in the morning though, you should head to Vive La Tarte in Noe Valley. This place has a few locations around the city, and each of them makes croissants we love with different fillings and toppings, but it’s hard to beat their classic almond. If you’re not in the mood for a croissant (or you’re saving it for your actual birthday), they also have a full menu of egg dishes and toasts.
 Obispo $ $ $ $ Caribbean  in  Mission $$$$ 3266 24th St Not
Rated
Yet
Obispo is a rum bar in the Mission from the same team as Bar Agricole and Trou Normand. If you get hungry, they have a Caribbean menu with things like cubano sandwiches, congri, and oxtail stew, but then make sure to get the pollo de Obispo. And if you want something smaller, reach for the empanadas along with a cocktail - we like the rum and ting.
Harborview Restaurant And Bar $ $ $ $ Chinese ,  Dim Sum  in  Embarcadero $$$$ 4 Embarcadero Ctr Not

Yet
If you’ve got a big group looking to celebrate, Harborview in The Embarcadero Center has no shortage of large tables and private rooms. Everything at this new place is huge - from the menu of noodle dishes, meats, and different kinds of dumplings, to the dining room that you could park a 747 in. Come for dim sum brunch on the weekend and order everything that passes you on a cart. The black and white soup dumplings only come if you order them though, so make sure to open a menu at least once.
Pushcart $ $ $ $ Chinese  in  Mission $$$$ 3224 22nd St Not
Rated
Yet
This three-seat takeout spot in the Mission is a little more expensive than a lot of the places on Clement Street, but the dim sum is good enough to merit the extra few dollars. Aside from the shrimp dumplings, get some charred lava salty egg yolk buns that are as cool to look at as they are good to eat. Or, if you’re lazily walking around the neighborhood, get the popcorn chicken - it’s a big cup of fried chicken bites served with caramel corn that somehow works.
