Fanfic No. 42: Blue Christmas

Type of fic: Canon compliant, 1.2k words, oneshot, rated K+

“Or, The story of how Paul Blofis met Percy Jackson. Oneshot set immediately after Titans' Curse; not-quite a Chirstmasfic.”

December 24 2007

Characters: Paul Blofis, Percy Jackson, and Sally Jackson

Length and format: This was a very short fic as it covered one scene rather than an overarching plot but that is what we typically get out of oneshots so the length and formatting were pretty solid.

Content: The plot was very intriguing! The author picked an off screen moment in canon and played it out well without going over the top. The plot was a bit simple with mostly dialogue but as a oneshot it worked out well.

Characterization: Characters felt very in character. Percy was protective of his mom and I liked that. The story was told from Paul’s perspective so we got to see more characterization out of him, he was a bit annoyed in this fic but dating Percy’s mom without some conflict from Percy seems a bit OOC so this played out well. Author also referred to Paul as a “part time actor and screenwriter in training” when Paul is actually a teacher. I’m letting this slide because I can’t remember if we learned more about Paul in The Titan’s Curse or The Battle of the Labyrinth. The latter of which has not been published yet as of December 24, 2007.

Reception: There are 94 reviews that are mostly positive and spread over the years, the latest one being from 2022! There are also 328 favorites and 73 follows.

Author: Author musafreen has very little available on their account page other than the 52 stories they have published. In ANs author claims this is not their best work and asks for reviews.

Impact: I smiled after reading this fic. It was great! The tone was nice and it was fun to see from Paul’s perspective, which we do not get a lot of.

RIP Olivia Newton John, John Eastman, Anne Heche, Robin Griggs, and Denise Dowse

I was out sick last week and missed a bunch of celebrity deaths. Here is my combined remembrance:

Remembering Olivia Newton-John 1948-2022

Newton-John in Grease

Singer/actress Olivia Newton-John has died at 73. She was already established as a pop singer in the 70s when she was cast as Sandy in the 1978 film adaptation of Grease. It is one of the great nostalgic musicals of all time and Newton-John and co-star John Travolta made this timeless. She and Travolta reunited a few more times. It needs to be added that her version of “Over the Rainbow” appeared in John Woo’s Face/Off, one of Travolta’s best performances. But I digress. They teamed up for a Christmas album in 2012 as well.

The soundtrack to Grease was a massive hit. I got the vinyl in my collection. There are some pop standards on this and her songs are among the highlights. Her 1981 song “Physical” was one of the biggest hit songs of the 80s, spending 10 weeks at #1 and Billboard named it #1 of the 1980s. I remember her video for “Soul Kiss” in 1985 too.

Remembering John Eastman 1939-2022

Eastman and McCartney

Entertainment lawyer John Eastman has died at 83. He was the older brother of Linda McCartney. When Paul McCartney married Linda in 1969, John and his father Lee began representing Paul after The Beatles break-up. Paul recently paid tribute to his brother-in-law online.

Remembering Anne Heche 1969-2022

Sad news that about a week after a terrible car accident, actress Anne Heche has died at 53. She got a lot of attention in the 90s for being Ellen DeGeneres’s girlfriend during the time that she came out. But Heche was actually a good supporting actress. Notable performances include Walking and Talking, Donnie Brasco, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Wag the Dog, Gus Van Sant’s remake of Psycho, the criminally underrated comedy Cedar Rapids, and Rampart.

Shortly before I was an intern for Ted Demme (I was a location intern on Monument Ave and at his production company Spanky Pictures), Ted directed Anne in the “Manhattan Miracle” segment of the HBO anthology film SUBWAYStories: Tales from the Underground. It was almost a silent film, when Gregory Hines sees Anne on the opposite subway platform. Great segment of an underrated film!

Remembering Robin Griggs 1973-2022

Griggs

Soap opera actress Robin Griggs has died at 49. I was not too familiar with her films, TV shows or soaps, but what got my attention about her is that she got her start as a teen on the Nickelodeon movie review show Rated K: For Kids by Kids. I was into it at the very moment I was getting into movies and watching Siskel & Ebert, it was tweens and teens talking about movies in a way you could relate. I sent in fan letters and even hoped to get on the show as a critic one day. Once in a while I got a postcard back thanking me and one time I even was told my fan letter was selected in a contest and I won sneakers! I don’t really remember Robin on the show, so I think she was on the show in the very beginning.

Remembering Denise Dowse 1958-2022

Dowse as Tyrone’s Mother in Requiem for a Dream

Actress Denise Dowse has died at 64. She actually got her start as an FBI agent in a 1989 episode of ALF. Also worth noting that she appeared in two separate episode of in Seinfeld 1992 and 1994. Her biggest role was as Ms. Teasley Beverly Hills, 90210 on from 1990 to 2000. Other notable roles include Requiem for a Dream and Ray.

Fanfic No. 31: Seashell Tie

Type of fic: Canon compliant, .6k words, oneshot, rated K

“It's almost Father's Day, and Percy Jackson sees a seashell patterned necktie. Taken from Titan's Cure, page 97.”

October 30, 2007

Characters: Percy Jackson and Poseidon

Length and format: This is a short fic of three moments loosely connected by the plot of Percy’s Father’s day present for Posideon. This fic definitely could’ve been longer to add more detail or plot but was still coherent and enjoyable. The author switches POVs and even says they are tired of writing in Percy’s POV which can be distracting but the grammar is pretty good.

Content: The plot is very loose but in a way that is acceptable for a short oneshot. The plot is very simple and really that’s all there is to say.

Characterization: Percy is pretty in canon and the author does a good job of narrating his thoughts, although it is pretty bare bones due to the lack of detail. Poseidon’s characterization is also very brief but within canon realm as a more caring Olympian parent which makes for a satisfying ending.

Reception: There are 44 reviews that are all positive and praising the author for how “cute” the fic is. There are also 145 favorites and 23 follows.

Author: Author ChildInMe is a girl who has purged their account page but not their stories. She says that “I'm quite ashamed of what I've written. Everything from now on that I upload will be of quality, I swear.” In AN she only gives the typical disclaimer. Account has been inactive since 2010 so we can only wish her the best.

Impact: Here ChildInMe captured a brief but enjoyable moment of a parent/child bond between Percy and Poseidon that has set them apart in canon and made them loved by the fandom. Good job!

It be Ramattra's birthday today (the first one since the cast's bdays were revealed), so obviously I had to make something special for such a monumental occasion~
