My nice little car, the 2005 RAV4, has gone the way of all good things.
It never stopped running, but came back from a recent oil change with a bill of health that called for repairs worth more than double its trade-in value. So alas, that was that.
Speaking of trade-in value, I was offended on the RAV's behalf that the official number was $700. That was mostly down to high mileage - more than 217,000 - but it didn't help that the car had survived a bad encounter with a deer back in 2015. The deer was not so lucky.
In any case, I loved my little car for all 200,000 miles we rode around together, and spent its last few days taking photos of all of its funny little details, like the AC button with the paint completely worn off, and the strange odds and ends that have accumulated in nooks and crannies over the last 16 years.
The man who hauled the RAV away said that, as a high-mileage trade-in, it is headed for a wholesale auction and will probably end up at a dealership of the "Steve Says Yes!" persuasion. I like to think it will have a whole other life as somebody else's solid little car... but I was still sad to see it loaded on a truck.
My new car is a much newer RAV, because why mess with a good thing? Here's to another 200,000 miles.

It’s has been a year we wanted to go back there, at the top of the Jafferau pass, on the west side of the Italian Alps. We’ve been there in July 2021 but were unfortunately stuck by snow and were not able to drive through the entire pass. On our way back to Paris, after 2 weeks of holidays in the south of France, we decided to drive there again with our mighty and more than adapted Rav4 + a dangerous dog. Had homemade hamburgers and a wonderful night under the storm. Impossible to sleep but who cares when you only have 10 hours of driving back to Paris. More photos to come during next week 🐶 - 📷: @amaurylaparra - #asphaltheritage #jafferau #montejafferau #fortejafferau #rav4 #toyotarav4 #rav4adventure #rav4offroad #awd #offroading #keepitwild #sommeiller #bardonecchia #alps #italianalps #camperlife #3sfe #90style #makegreengreatagain #xa10 #overlanding #rav4アドベンチャー (à Monte Jafferau) https://www.instagram.com/p/CiF64-Boht-/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

2023 Toyota bZ4X XLE FWD
Electrics have a growing place in the auto world, but this oddly named Toyota is awkward in many ways. The interior would be a deal-breaker for me.
All-electric crossover features a funky name, and interior … Electric vehicles are growing in number, range, and pricing options. That’s all well and good, but not all feel like a big step forward. When that feeling comes from a Toyota, it simply feels odd. It’s especially weird since Toyota and Subaru, two long-time winners in design and function, worked together on their kissin’ cousins, the…
