IT'S TIME FOR A REDRAW!!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a redraw of the (now old) blog icon that I honestly think was very much needed. It's really nice to see how much I improved when it comes to lighting, line-art, and anatomy just by comparing these two drawings, and I'm super proud of it turned out. I am shaking Ravenpaw like a soda can.

Rusty in the first book: Wow this wild cat like seems great, can't wait to learn to hunt and fight and everything, it's going to be so fun-
Ravenpaw: Hehehehe. One member of our family is dead. Imma going to pass out now.
Rusty: ...
I redrew something from like... 2019? 2018? Around those years, I think. Can't believe it's been almost five years since I started taking drawing, especially digital drawing, seriously. I still don't use a tablet, tho, even when I have one, because it's been so long since I used it for something other than college, that I don't want to be used to it. So fingers it is.
Yes. Warrior cats. Honestly, I have to be grateful that I was in there before... Whatever is happening now with the books. Honestly I stopped reading them (or real books in general, fanfiction is the only thing I can read now), but it's what got me into drawing, so there's that.
It's that scene from the first book, Into the Wild, when Ravenpaw announced that Redtail was dead.

a large The Prophecy Begins collage, inspired by @thunderc1an 's yearly redraw
i might use this as a sketch/inspo for a larger piece, as there are more characters i want to include but didn't have room for/forgot.
rusty is in the middle, bluestar is above him, with a dog's maw above her. to the left is (going down) is princess, cloudtail, and smudge (as well as a bag of cat kibble). to the right is (going down) is yellowfang, tigerclaw, and broken star, with 2 stars representing yellowfang's other kits. below kittypets are windclan led by tallstar in the tunnels, with cinderpaw and her broken leg on the thunderpath. below rusty is scourge's paw. to the lower right is crookedstar with silverstream below him. to the right of him is leopardstar and tigerstar on the pile of bones. below silverstream is ravenpaw and graystipe, and below them is sandstorm and dustpelt

ravenpaw looks a bit goofy here i’ll probably redraw him later! but i based him on my gf’s cat :).
quite pleased with deadfoot. renamed him to hopfoot because his kit name was hopkit, and hopping like a rabbit or smth idk.

Happy 20th anniversary fellow battle kitty fans!  I didn’t quite get this done in time for the anniversary, but I was only about 3 hrs late and I spent most of the anniversary night working on it, so whatever.
I decided to do a redraw of this to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Into the Wild. I also wanted to make it look like the Warriors book nook I made (I bought the wooden frame and cats (though I painted one to look like Ravenpaw), but the rocks I made from clay and painted and I decorated it all with bits of mini foliage I bought online)) that currently sits on my Warriors bookshelf. I think it's a pretty good interpretation of both of those. I'm particularly proud of how much I've improved between the 2016 drawing and this new one.  It looks so, so much better.
I'm ridiculously proud of how that background turned out.  It looks so damn good! I'm especially proud of how the Highrock and the walls of the ravine turned out. I never get rocks to look right, so I'm especially thrilled with how that turned out, and the hanging lichen looks so good! The patch of nettles next to the Highrock look alright, the tufts of tall grass look pretty decent, and I got kinda lazy with the ferns overhanging the walls of the ravine and the bramble bush behind the Highrock. This time, since it says the Highrock is at the end of the clearing, I figured the ravine must continue on at least a little while behind the Highrock, but it's all blocked off with bramble bushes and gorse so it's impassable. So I decided to show that here, and I think it turned out well.  Not sure the walls of the ravine are high enough, but oh well.
I'm also really proud of how the cats turned out.  Graystripe and Ravenpaw especially. Firestar still looks a little awkward on the face, but ah well. They're all missing some of their scars, since these are these three in their youth at the start of Firestar's leadership, a little after Scourge's defeat when the forest was at peace for the first time in seasons and ThunderClan stood strong with its new leader and deputy. Funny how they all ended up with one notch on their left (our right) ear. ^^ Not intentional, but funny.
The silhouette of the approaching cat is meant to be vague as to who it is. It can either be a representation of a new reader entering the world of Warriors for the first time and being welcomed in by the characters, or one of the future protagonists of whichever series, being hailed in by the heroes that came before them as the new hero of their day. Either way, I wanted the feeling of the viewer being welcomed in by our original trio.  Dunno why Ravenpaw's there, guess we just happened to stop in while he was visiting his friends in ThunderClan. XD
Overall, I'm super, super proud of how this one turned out, it honestly looks amazing.

The Warriors “manga”.. the only canon medium we really have (other than the book covers maybe) that actually depicts our beloved battle cats in a visual format. Just to clarify, the Warriors “manga” are labeled incorrectly. Manga, on Google, is defined as “a style of Japanese comic books and graphic novels, typically aimed at adults as well as children.” The Warriors comics are not made by or for Japan, which means they don’t classify as a manga. The artist of the manga varies but most of them are either American or British. The redraw of the comic page was drawn by the lovely r4ven._.krkr on Instagram. However the artist behind the original page is James L Barry! If you are at all in the loop in this fandom, you probably recognize his work. He has done the artwork for almost all of the Warriors manga minus the Tigerstar & Sasha manga. He has also illustrated the little comics at the end of the super editions and had worked on other works besides Warriors. On YouTube and Twitter, he has done tutorials on how to draw in his style. For more information about Barry and examples of his work, check out his website.
Now that we have some backstory on both artists, we can talk about the actual scene taking place. This comic page came from the Ravenpaw centered manga: Ravenpaw’s Path. This series has a total of 3 books: Shattered Peace, A Clan in Need & The Heart of a Warrior. These 3 books are also available together as one big book and can be found in black & white and full color. This particular scene takes place in The Heart of a Warrior. For those who haven’t read the comic or forgot what happens, I will summarize the events that take place before and then explain this scene. Spoilers of course ahead for Ravenpaw’s Path, you have been warned. This comic takes place right after Ravenpaw & Barley help Thunderclan fight off a group of Bloodclan cats who have been causing trouble for the both of them after Scourge’s death. These Bloodclan cats have been attacking clan patrols, stealing prey. A group of them also took over Raven & Barley’s farm, kicking them out of their home. After a visit to the moonstone, Ravenpaw goes to Thunderclan to help them finish Bloodclan for good. As it turns out, Bloodclan is being run by Barley’s twin brothers, Hoot & Jumper. They have renamed themselves Snake & Ice. After being defeated, they plead with Barley to let them stay with him because the rest of Bloodclan was sick of listening to them and wanted to kill them. Barley agrees, because they are kin, and the two brothers move onto the farm. All is not well however, both Jumper & Hoot are very lazy and have Ravenpaw do everything, all the hunting and cleaning. Everytime Ravenpaw attempts to complain about them to Barley, he ignores it and takes everything his brothers say to heart. This angers Ravenpaw and the two of them have a rift between them.  Now for this actual scene, this is the scene when Barley finally discovers what his brothers have been doing to Ravenpaw and kicks them out for good. After Barley apologizes to Ravenpaw and they rekindle their bond. The comic ends with the two of them standing on the roof of the barn, looking out at their territory contently.
This redraw was done as practice, as the artist wanted to practice drawing comics. In their post, they talk about several critiques for the art style of the comic that they aimed to fix with their rendition. They are of the opinion that the artist could have put more effort into the comic. They think the art style is okay but they don’t really like it. The things they improved upon were the designs of the cats, the mimics, and the speech bubble. For the designs, the redraw artist thinks that Barley and his 2 brothers look identical. They think a little more effort could have been made to add external features to make them different, even if the two brothers weren’t main characters. Likewise, the artist thought the expressions were kinda stiff. So they made the expressions more exciting when the expressions show different emotions for a more realistic effect. They think it makes the characters less frozen. Finally, the speech bubbles, they thought it was a good idea for each panel to have different speech bubbles. Again, they think the speech bubble helps emphasize emotion like Barley yelling in the first panel. What do YOU think? Do you prefer the redraw or the original page? Do you think these critiques are fair? How else would you edit the original comic? Me and the rest of the team would love to hear what you think in the comments below. Likewise, if you like this art style, consider leaving a like on the original post. Directly supporting the original artist benefits this account greatly. It motivates more people to allow us to use their work. Are you interested in seeing more Warriors based content? Join the Warriors Amino!
