The thinking rock wizard101
Tumblr media
The distortion of the mind writes history, myth, and legend. Thus, a story can be warped by the individual experiences and imagination of the Conjurer. To understand a story, one must birth it from one’s mind. “History begets legend, and legend begets myth. “Myth is the power of the mind,” reads the dusty tome on the History of Myth Magic in Professor Drake’s classroom. It is no surprise, then, that she was placed into the school of Myth at the Ravenwood School of Magical Arts what could possibly fit a young Wysterian girl- cultivated in the heart of nature’s chaos- better than the chaos of the mind itself? Like many other children, Nora was prone to mischief and trickery, though whatever transgressions thereby caused were swiftly forgiven, as the girl possessed the natural ability to charm her way out of nearly any situation. Nora OgreHead grew up in the earthen, green bramble that is Wysteria. Nora strives to uncover the secrets behind the enigmatic GreenThorn brothers, all the while maintaining grades, making friends, and ultimately finding her place among history's greatest giants. It's not that she is interested in them, really-after all, why would she care about two random teenage boys in her conjuration class? But it is odd that there are rumors of the two being linked to an ancient kingdom of fairies in Avalon, though both have declined to comment on the matter entirely. After settling in, she learns about two wizard brothers who are causing quite a commotion among the first-years: Adam and Finnigan GreenThorn. Bearing this is mind, her parents sent her off to study magic at Ravenwood - both to cultivate her magic skills and to at last find like-minded people she can connect with. But deep in her heart, she longs to make friends with other humans her age. With her books and pet golden ram Zeus, she seems content. Despite her aloof exterior, she is deeply interested in studying ancient history and conjuration magic. Nora OgreHead is a quiet, bookish girl who grew up in the remote Wysterian village of Vengill.

Willowglen Park
After Mervyn Strand's contribution, the Royal Treasury reached it's first threshold of $5000, unlocking the Village Green and Communal Well lots. I decided to combine them into one lot (10x20, I think? or maybe 20x30? I can't remember, lol), creating Willowglen Park.
Sims can come here to get water, fish, play games, and generally just hang out for a bit. It's located at a central road intersection, close to all the starting homes.

-Rating and gushing about every Wizard101 “World”/Arc-
Imma just gush about my month of Wizard101 and how I finally got to a close “end” of the game.
24/12 Edit: Fixed some typos here and there and added some stuff.
07/09 Edit: KI decided to fully revamp Wiz city also changing some lore so the rating on that is outdated. Might also put my thought of the new Wiz City there once I’m through all the new content.
Arc 1 - Malistaire - 10/10
Prob my favourite.
The writing really ties in every world, even when you speedquest through it.
Contains a lot of my favourite worlds.
I’m still crying over Mali to this day...
(Old) Wizard City - 10/10
Literally the introduction to the game and the place I spent most of my time in when I was a crownless and membershipless young wizard.
Do you want to farm Nightshade or Kraken?
That graphic revamp really punched.
Fave Places To chill: Nightside, Commons, Ravenwood, Cyclops Lane
Krokotopia - 11/10
This world made me fall in love with Wizard101
Egyptian aesthetic o-o
I was once a balance wizard you know?
Cries over the plot in the tomb of storms
Also KROKODILES
Fave Places To chill: Krokosphinx, School Of Balance
Marleybone - 10/10
I liked the Wizard version, but the Pirate version is more my jam.
Everyone is lookin dapper.
Home of the Doc- I mean Professor!
The whole worlds feels like Cats, but with dogs and the plot is Sherlock Holmes.
Barkingham Palace Gear o-o
Fave Places To chill: The Museum.
Mooshu 7/10
Japan and China vibes
Your usual warlord chaos
Everything is BRIGHT GREEN
It felt  S H O R T
Has pretty nice wand drops
Fave Places To chill: Jade Palace
Dragonspyre 12/10
This is what you get when you throw Roman aesthetic, Prussian History and a pinch of Russia into a pot.
The amount of subtle history references is making me listen to every line of dialogue I can get from this world.
D R A G O N S
Milos Bookwyrm is kinda a darlin
We kill Mali here :’)
Fave Places To chill: The Atheneum, wherever my battle drake chills
Arc 2 - Morganthe - 9/10
Has nice spots here and there.
Writing is still good, but a little less engaging.
Morganthe was so over the top “bad bitch” that it got annoying
Grandpappy spider was the saving grace of the arc
Celestia - 8/10
Solid world, story was kinda meh
ASTRAL MAGIC
Is this Skull Island??? Why are there water moles??? I thought they only exist in Skull Island????
Basically Atlantis
WAND OF STASIS
Fave Places To chill: Watermole Village
Zafaria - 8/10
Jambo Wizard!
The plot is Belloq and crazy tse-tse zebra ruining everyones day.
All they wanted was a nice zafari, all they got was misery and running into Morganthe worshippers.
Flameingo can’t take it anymore...
“Son I’m disappointed”
Fave Places To chill: Baobab Crown
Avalon - 9/10
Love it, but something is missing?
King Arthur, but you’re Arthur.
How to become a knight 101
FINALLY I CAN GET DEER KNIGHT
The source of Morganthes saltiness
Everyone is prob scared of me because I rode a battle badger during my stay...
Fave Places To chill: Caliburn
Azteca - 9.5/10
Hello and Bye...
I will never be able to do casual side questing here anymore...
The plot was nice, but you know, IRREVERSIBLE DAMAGE WAS NOT WHAT I EXPECTED
Do not speedquest through this if you are a plot person, DO NOT
Cries over birb and dinosaur friends...
The music was the best part of it.
Fave Places To chill: N o w h e r e  a f t e r  t h a t  d a r n  m e t h e o r i t e, almost everywhere before that
Khrysalis - 9.8/10
L O O O O O N G
It was to be expected though
Mouse Guard vibes
The furniture sets for this suck and there is no proper furniture to obtain otherwise...
One Wizard Army (with the help of some deer friends) pls do not kill me for my bad word puns
I’d feel bad about how Morganthe ended, but after Azteca I really don’t have anything left for that whiny bitch...
A lot of people want my head...
Hello there hand- I mean hello there Spider.
Captain Colridge, if you had a pegleg I’d be 100% sure you’re ratbeard gone out of shape.
I love the dynamic changes to the Bastion once you progress
SHADOW MAGIC no one uses though because it’s not worth the pips and time
Fave Places To chill: Last Woods
Arc 3 - Spider And Raven - 6/10
Had solid concepts, kinda threw them out of the window
I do not like the writing in a majority of the arc
I think I was so disappointed, because I hyped these worlds up so much, the expectations did not meet reality
The ending was a no no
Plot was barely engaging
I only pushed through this for the concepts of Mirage and Polaris and wanted to see where Grandpappy Spider went
Polaris - 7/10
WAY TOO SHORT
You spent half of the time in the arcanum anyway
I don’t like Mellori, but that is just me
REVOLUTION TIME!
I don’t like that we had to throw a ship worth of fish into the sea, although they apparently still live? Somehow?
Everyone was at full right to overthrow the Empress though, she was horrible.
Where is Napoleguin???
RA RA RATSPUTIN, LOVER OF- wait  w h a t ? ? ?
I don’t like the Arcanum, but I guess I’ll be a part of it.
Fave Places To chill: Walruskberg, Captain Colridges Tavern
Mirage - 6.5/10
The more you hype, the more you’ll be disappointed...
Again the Spider part of the plot was good, the other was  e h
If I’m going to have to talk to another snobby over the top whiny cat I’m going to lose it.
Boochbeard, where is Mr. Gandry?
Bara Snakes.
Istar stop whining about bugs.
Ozzy you’re my best bud in this.
House themed GEAR, APARTMENTS and MOUNTS, but you gotta defeat a 100 enemies before that...
Love the world design though
THE MAGIC CARPET RIDE
Fave Places To chill: Caravan, anywhere you can wander through endless sand
Empyrea 4/10
This is what happens when you throw too many things together
S t a r  T r e k
Medulla shut up
The idea to have an isle in the eye of a storm is cool though
Zanadu was kinda meh (prob because I remember most of it just happening in a sewer)
That dance session though, Khan rocks
The dwarfes were also kinda meh, just didn’t fit with the concepts of the previous areas
Cthulu island was also kinda meh
Ending of the first half was literally Batman and although I know “The Bat” and “The cabal” it kinda came out of nowhere...
And then I pretty much lost interest in the world
The Reverie got me again, nice and fresh mechanics.
I will make a seperate rant on the ending, but no... I don’t like it at all and I don’t see Spider forgiving Raven as a good ending
Felt really forced
Hit some bad spots with me...
I thought we could fight Raven??? >:O
Fave Places To chill: Reverie
Arc 4 - idk what is going on
Karamelle ?/10
Ja moin, guten Tag allerseits.
Haven’t gotten there yet, but man, I’m not up for dictator Nana... :T
Spells look pathetic o k
If you try denglish one more time I’m going to lose it
At this point it’s obvious that KI has a thing for german speaking countries related stuff
Sentinel Marshmallows, do I have to say more?
Other Worlds
Grizzleheim - 8/10
Vikings
Forshadowing of Raven
It’s ok
Grendleweed
Wintertusk - 8/10
Even more Vikings
Grizzleheim 2.0, but everyone is op and crits
You need the spells, but you don’t want to do it
It’s been too long since I’ve last been there
Wysteria - 9/10
The original snob
At least these weren’t a pain to listen to...
Incompetent teachers make incompetent students.
That hall of fame though.
Actually a nice world to quest through
The aesthetic is nice and they kinda got the cooler library compared to Ravenwood, unless I’m missing out on something.
Fave Places To chill: The library
Aquila - 10/10
Birbs
Was a pain in Pirate, is wonderful in Wiz
SKY IRON HASTA
Secret bosses you seldom find people to fight with
Everyone is salty that you’ve beated them and they don’t even try to hide.
Hades got the best estate.
Cerberus was cute until he became a set of floating heads.
Fave Places To chill: Tartarus
Darkmoor - 9.5/10
“Who hits?” - “Everyone” - *person who asked decides to leave the dungeon*
This happened to me 7 times in a row an U G H
People need to calm down their hitter ego
The dungeons are fun the first times, then they are just an annoyance to farm.
Plot is the Ballad Lenore
GO TO REST MALI
Hit in 5 rounds or say bye bye to your blades
No Feints
Catacombs 11/10
D r a g o n s p y r e  L o r e
Valencia, what are you doin there?
Basically KI’s punch in the face of Pirate101 players
“Oh you want an update? Guess you gotta watch how we recycle Valencia in Wiz”
Dragoon gear - Just like Darkmoor, but this time your suffering has a certain end
Also no exp on your quests?

Wiztober Day Six: Worlds
Welcome to day six of Wiztober2020. This is the first arc of my main timeline regarding the majority of my Wizard101 ocs. Set in order of when they happened, and some worlds were switched around. Content Warnings for war, school expulsion, sickness mention, torture mention, starvation mention, general colonization attempts (Marleybone @ Krokotopia), gangs mention (Marleybone), attempted murder, and murder (Malistaire).
(link to prompt list)
Grizzleheim’s civil war of ravens, bears, and wolves was resolved decades before the first great threat to the Spiral. Phuong Jade, a recently expelled life wizard from Ravenwood Academy (where she had attended under the name of Morelle Jade), had also been exiled from Wizard City. With limited Spiral Door Keys at her disposal, she ended up in the trading world of Grizzleheim. She was willing to settle, to wait until her girlfriend graduated Ravenwood Academy and came to find her. But upon living in Northguard for only a month, she realized the war between groups would not end until every group aside from one was wiped out. So she dug deeper, taking small quests and using her life magic as well as what little Shadow she had secretly learned and got expelled for. She dug deep and found the root of corruption in the few individual ravens that caused this very war, and she brought them to justice. After this, she stood before the leaders of the bears, ravens, and wolves, and was given the title RavenHunter, a name she would eventually give to her girlfriend, as Morae came to Grizzleheim not long after, and proposed as soon as they met after two long year of being apart.
Mooshu’s lands were revitalized and its emperor healed by two children of a healer, who had grown up in a small village and were some of the few wizards willing and able to stand up and fight. Mahamari ‘Mari’ Jade, a twelve year old theurgist, and her older brother Emrys Jade, a thaumaturge of thirteen, adventured out and began healing a sick world in search of a cure for a sick ruler. Right before they reached the Ancient Burial Grounds of Mooshu, the siblings fought, Emrys’ need for control in order to feel safe and Mari’s endless anger and ability to push her brother’s buttons making them clash horribly. Mari returned home, and not hours later Emrys was attacked and kidnapped by vengeful spirits who claimed to be restoring their lost honor. After weeks of torture and starvation, he was rescued by his sister Mari and their father Quyen Jade. The family worked together to finish the quest, and the emperor was saved. As a gift they were given priceless swords, and a key to Dragonspyre, more of a tradition than anything else. It took a full year for Emrys to physically recover, however.
Krokotopia had one protege of Alhazred who was able to fix the problems created by the Marleybonians that had destroyed ancient tombs and desecrated old homes of the dead. Irisi, at thirteen years of age, was the only one able to stand up to them, unwavering as she insisted they leave the pyramids and instead camp in the Oasis, receiving the undeserved hospitality of the manders. Irisi methodically set each pyramid to rights, carefully preserving what was left, and sending the undead back to their rest with her magic, utilizing balance to restore the equilibrium between life and death. She was brilliant, though learned of her own intense fear of ghosts, how their whispers and haunting only reminded her of how little life her adoptive father, the aged krok Alhazred, would have left. She powered through until she reached the Tomb of Storms. While on her way to defeat Krokopatra and ensure the safety of the Krokonomicon, she came face to face with her namesake. The first human queen of Krokotopia was now a memory of what she once was, a ghost bearing the name and withered face of the first Irisi, but nothing else. It was the hardest battle of the entire adventure, and after that Irisi secured the Krokonomicon with ease from Krokopatra. The Marleybonians left, and Alhazred had the Krokonomicon destroyed, but not until he was able to transcribe the text in a place where it could not be stolen, the only people alive who knew of its location being him and his daughter.
Wizard City was cleared of its monstrous invasion by four students of Ravenwood Academy who had fallen behind in their studies, whether by simple procrastination or by other extenuating circumstances. Noah Dreamtamer and his twin Haley Raintamer were one half of this group. Ianthe RavenHunter and their partner Leo Nightside were the other. They split the streets between them, uncomfortable with the other pair of students. Noah and Haley relished in being able to find a practical use for the skills they were being taught, and found it a much easier way to understand their magic. Ianthe and Leo were quiet, intent on mastering the use of their spells, and explore Wizard City outside of their home in Nightside. The four of them gathered again for the intense final battles, realizing that they worked best as a team, and became awkward friends, both pairs still distant in their mistrust of outsiders, yet still they had forged a bond.
Wysteria held its tournament, unaffected by the threat an ex-professor from another world could wield. Outstanding wizards from many schools were called to join, but those we follow in this world are from Ravenwood Academy and Krokotopia’s small school, run only by Alhazred and his few mander students. Mari Jade was invited to join, as now she had been attending Ravenwood since she was thirteen, and now was fifteen, the top of her class, though quiet and easily pushed around by her peers. Irisi was also invited, as the best of Alhazred’s students, now fifteen, two years after her eventful cleansing of her world. This was the first time Irisi had seen fellow humans, as well as those who were not a krok, mander, or dog. Irisi was starstruck by visiting a new, much larger world for the first time, though many there treated her as a rarity, a foolish stranger who did not know the basics of common life. Mari was different, as were some other kind souls. But Mari was far different. Irisi saw her and felt the quiet, joyful thrill of realizing a flower was blooming, as so few did in her home world. Both were inclined to shyness around strangers, and so rarely spoke, even when they were framed as a pair, and sent to find the true culprit so they were not punished. The subtle brushes of their arms, the few times they had to grasp each others hands for stability, the times when they would tend to the others wound, wrapping bandages and brushing fingertips over heated skin in order to check for breaks and bruises. They would spend extended moments staring into each other’s eyes, Mari’s a dark brown of rich earth and endless potential, and Irisi’s an amber that whispered of gold and bronze, of sunlight. They found the Spiral Cup, and then were able to compete in the final battle of the tournament, against each other. Irisi won, bringing glory and recognition to her small and easily dismissed home world, and was able to publicly speak of how she had to save Krokotopia from the ignorance of Marleybonians who saw the place people lived as nothing more than a museum exhibit to be made.
Marleybone had no problems on the surface, and made a perfect world for Irisi and Mari’s first date. They had spent a year apart, sending letters across worlds to each other, as they both had studies to attend to. Slowly, over their year of letters to each other, they shared their lives, their hardships, and fell in love with a girl a world away. After this date, Irisi would begin living in Wizard City, assisting Arthur Whethersfield (who happened to be practically a brother to the her) in teaching balance magic, and hopefully beginning to set up a proper school building. Before that, they were to meet in Marleybone, and walk the streets at night, simply talking withe their hands intertwined, until they were to have a picnic at night, lit only by small balls of magic and the moon. It was not to be. Their moonlit walk in a park was interrupted by a cat on the run, who stumbled into them and pleaded for their help. Out of duty, Irisi agreed, and they assisted Baxter in running from a gang he had gotten on the wrong side of. This was how they ended up running across the rooftops of Marleybone, breathless and laughing as they ran from gang members to assist a very unlucky cat. It was after helping Baxter that he gave them information, having been told of Irisi’s Krokotopian origin. He told them of how there was still an exhibit on what little the Marleybonian had stolen from Krokotopia before Irisi intervened, and then he was gone, into the safety of his house. Mari seemed even more furious than her date, and they both entered the museum later with their magic flaring in bronze and brilliant green. Then, of course, they were informed by a rather terrified museum curator that the infamous Meowiarty had already stolen everything from the exhibit. They ran across rooftops yet again, this time chasing a mastermind to make him face justice. In this race, Meowiarty taunted them, claiming he now had the Krokonomicon. Irisi, enraged, told him that the Krokonomicon had been destroyed by her and her father’s hands, as she had explained clearly in her public speech only a year before. They had to chase Meowiarty to the top of Big Ben, fighting his cronies along the way,  and at the top, that was when Meowiarty grinned, and told them that he had already known Irisi was one of the only people alive who knew of the contents of the Krokonomicon, and that this had been a long con to bring her here, to this moment. They were both knocked unconscious, and Meowiarty’s ally, Malistaire Drake, who needed the Krokonomicon to wake the Dragon Titan, kidnapped Irisi. Mari woke to an empty room at the top of Big Ben, and a deep rage was unleashed from inside her.
Dragonspyre was the known home world of Malistaire Drake, and the resting place of the Dragon Titan that would destroy the Spiral to bring one woman back to life. Mari knew this, and was intent on going there, but she couldn’t do it alone and risk Irisi’s life like that. She returned to Wizard City, single-minded to the point of roughly shoving a bully she frequently avoided, making many students shocked to the point of finally noticing little Mari Jade, sixteen and five foot two, the long hair she had when entering Marleybone now cut short, as her braid had gotten caught in some iron fences during their chase and was swiftly cut by her own hand. She entered the ice school without hesitation, finding the nearest ice wizard near her age and demanding for her brother, who now went by Emrys Pyre. Emrys, age seventeen, was a closed off, easily annoyed prodigy. He had only three friends, and adamantly refused having any friendships at all. He always regretted the years long distance between him and his sister, even when they went to the same school, but he was ashamed of his own weakness and trauma after Mooshu, and hadn’t held a proper conversation with her since. Until now. His friends, lead by little Genevieve, had freaked out upon learning that he had a sister asking for him, and dragged him out into the main classroom of the ice school to properly see her again. Mari, covered in dirt and blood and missing a majority of her hair after her ordeal in Marleybone, told him in simple words that they were going to go rescue her girlfriend from the ex-professor of death, who had kidnapped her and likely brought her to Dragonspyre. At this deluge of information, Emrys insisted she rest for a day before insisting they go on a quest to murder a man. Mari allowed it, but while she stayed in the dorm of Castian and Jen, his friends, she ended up spending most of the night restless, and so the two took it upon themselves to assist her in a style transformation. That morning she met her brother over breakfast with half of her head shaved, a leather jacket, and a new appreciation for some of Jen’s favorite American and British bands from Earth, all of them punk and/or rock. Emrys just sighed, and was convinced by his sister to use their Dragonspyre Keys, given to them by the emperor of Mooshu years ago. They went, just the two of them, and with their skill and knowledge in magic, they spent only days going through Dragonspyre to reach Malistaire. Mari was fueled only by rage, her magic manifesting in a mass of writhing vines she could stand atop of and use as a method of transportation. Emrys, ever analytical and cold in order to cut off his emotions and cope with his trauma alone, was silent and expressionless as they cut down draconian soldiers (who looked so much like his draconian friend, Castian) and the ghosts of dead warriors. The siblings never spoke, they simply fought and defeated and repeated over and over, resting only when one of them collapsed. They reached the Great Spyre, and using Mari’s climbing vines and Emrys’ spikes of ice, they scaled it. The pair battle Malistaire’s small army of the undead and evil creatures who would gleefully see the Spiral rendered into nothing but stardust. The two of them faced Malistaire finally, but Mari only had eyes for Irisi, who was injured and barely conscious, her face a mask of agony as she was held by Malistaire’s hand over a river of everflowing lava. Using the siblings as a distraction, Irisi managed to push away Malistaire, though she herself fell in a heap by the deadly river. Mari and Emrys battled Malistaire, both far more powerful than the man expected. Emrys summoned creatures of immense strength, as well as creating shields for himself and his sister to save them from the necromancer’s draining attacks. It was Mari that struck the final blow, the sharpened and rage filled centaur she summoned firing a volley of thorned arrows, piercing Malistaire’s chest and killing the man before he hit the ground. They saved Irisi, as well as the Spiral, though Mari secretly, guiltily, thought that Irisi was more important, and knew she was no better than the man she killed.
The first arc was completed then, the first threat to the Spiral destroyed. Vines covered Malistaire’s body and bloomed at Mari’s first sigh of relief upon finding her love alive. The rage and need for vengeance spilled from Mari alongside her tears, and that magic sunk deep into Dragonspyre, life magic infecting and infesting into the deep core of the world.
Mari and Emrys walked into Ravenwood after that, Irisi on a conjured stretcher behind them, and they never returned to Dragonspyre, far more occupied with the trials to come.
They would never know that within years, the life magic Mari left in Dragonspyre would manifest itself and flourish. The corpses of the world’s dead would become the heart of a forest. The deep chamber of magma that fueled the volcano would cool, soothed by lullabies of life magic, fragments of the Song of Creation, and the skies would clear, no more smoke and fire to pollute it. Dragonspyre would become a green, flowering thing, a place of nature instead of a ravaged husk, now an overcome ruin. And water, finally water, would rule. The Dragon Titan would sleep under a blanket of moss, roots clinging to the small spaces between scales, and life would make a home of what once would destroy everything.

NYSGA Qualifiers and Am Series Sites
NYSGA 2019 Calendar
As the calendar flips and the New York winter tapers down, one of my go to signs of Spring is the release of the NYSGA (New York State Golf Association) schedule. For those who are unaware the NYSGA is the entity responsible for conducting the New York State Championships and the Amateur Series. The amateur championships are reserved for the upper tier golfers with the required handicap level but the Amateur Series offers golfers of any level, gender, and age a platform to compete against similarly skilled flights of competitors. The Amateur Series awards prizes and points to both Net and Gross winners which culminate in a season ending championship.
Not only are these events run very well and a great way to get out and compete with your peers it’s also an excellent way to gain access to some clubs which you would otherwise need some help or know someone to get access to. Ever since I moved back to New York I have been competing in both types of events and have played some excellent courses and had a great time with my competitors.
Looking forward to 2019 here are some of notable sites in the 2019 schedule:
 Amateur Series Events
May 7 Wanakah CC, Hamburg, NY – For anyone familiar with the NYSGA events this one shouldn’t be a surprise. The club recently wrapped up a master plan renovation executed by architect Chris Wilczynski and since then has been very open to NYSGA events over the past years hosting Amateur Series, Championship Qualifiers, and a Championship Host Site. The excellent work by Chris makes this a must play to anyone in the Western NY area. While the renovation was mainly done to improve draining but the restored green complexes and bunkers really shine here. While most of the greens don’t have much noticeable internal contouring the subtle break and slopes make them quite tricky at times but still fun.
May 9 Shenendoah GC and May 10 Kaluhyat GC, Verona NY – Turning Stone resort has three really solid courses on property with two of them ranked in the Top 100 public courses (Kaluhyat and Atunyote). With back to back days it sets up for a great little get away at a decent price compared to typical greens fees. In addition to the golf the casino has a few restaurant options and obviously plenty of gaming options for when you’re off the course.
May 13 Irondequoit CC, Pittsford, NY – Irondequoit is one of the many private courses in Pittsford suburb of Rochester with Oak Hill and Country Club of Rochester all within less than 5 minutes of each other. The front 9 at Irondequoit was designed in 1916 by Donald Ross and is a fantastic stretch of holes over very hilly ground with great green sites. The back 9 was added in 1950 and is on flatter less interesting land, but still maintains a few decent holes. All in all the front 9 alone is worth playing in this event and makes up for the lack luster back 9 holes. I would also recommend doubling up and playing a round before at Ravenwood or some of the other private courses (Monroe, CCR, Oak Hill) in the area if you can swing some access.
May 21 Leatherstocking, Cooperstown, NY – While Leatherstocking may not be a private course it is certainly on the higher end of public courses with typical greens fees exceeding $100, so you’re already seeing a savings with the registration fee. As for the course, the first two-thirds of the course is set on some pretty hilly land which makes for some great golf holes, I especially like the loop of 10-12. After that stretch it starts to flatten out and works towards the lake before finishing on a neat Cape hole. If you’re in the area this is one you should definitely mark on your calendar.
June 17 Brook-Lea CC, Rochester, NY – Want to play a course that is host to a professional tournament? Brook-Lea is just that, host of the Symetra tour Danielle Downey Classic. I played in this one a few years back and can’t wait to get back in 2019. Brook-Lea is a fun course with some great risk reward holes leading to exciting tournament golf.
July 29 Stafford CC, Stafford, NY – Keeping the theme going with golden age architecture Stafford is a Walter Travis design opened in the 1920’s. Similar to many Travis designs the course has a spectacular set of greens, and some quirky features not seen in many of the modern designs. This course to me is a must play.
NYSGA Qualifiers
NYS Am – Crag Burn Golf Club, East Aurora, NY
While the host site is a pretty decent RTJ course the qualifiers leave a lot to be desired. I have only played Glen Oak and Chautauqua which are the Buffalo and Jamestown sites and neither is the greatest courses and is public access so doesn’t really do much for me. I can’t comment on any of the other sites but have heard decent reviews about Yahnundasis and according https://www.top100golfcourses.com/ none of them are in the top 40 of NYS rankings. Quite frankly in whole the lineup may be the most disappointing in the last 6 years. Typically NYSGA does a great job of site selection but 2019 didn’t pan out.
NYS Mid-Am – Tuscarora Golf Club, Marcellus, NY
Will be updated when the host sites are released.
NYS Women’s Am and Mid-Am – Lancaster Country Club
Lancaster Country Club – Really not much to say about this one, I have played here a few times and it’s just not a good or fun course. Outside of 2 or 3 holes it’s not worth the time.
USGA Qualifiers
US Am – Pinehurst Number 2 and 4 Village of Pinehurst, NC
Whippoorwill Club, July 8th – Originally laid out by Donald Ross but very shortly after opening was renovated by Charles Banks moving some of the holes across the street. With an intriguing routing where very few holes on the front 9 are parallel to each other and the blend of typical Ross features with some Banks template hole features makes for an interesting combination and one I’d love to see.
Mendon Golf Club, July 8th – I honestly don’t know much about this site but the website doesn’t inspire much hope or interest. My guess is this one isn’t anything special.
US Women’s Am – Old Waverly Golf Club, West Point, MS
No sites in New York
US Mid-Am – Colorado Golf Club, Parker, CO and CommonGround Golf Course, Aurora, CO
Glens Falls Country Club, August 12th – The Donald Ross trend continues and shows how lucky we are in NY to have so many of his great works. Glens Falls is an under the radar great Ross course, which many rank in the Top 10-15 of his 300+ courses. To me this makes this site the preferred Mid-Am qualifying site in NY.
Lancaster Country Club, August 16th – Really not much to say about this one, I have played here a few times and it’s just not a good or fun course. Outside of 2 or 3 holes it’s not worth the time.
US Women’s Mid-Am – Forest Highlands Golf Club, Flagstaff, AZ
No sites in New York

The Glass Coffin (snippet 2)
Fandom(s): Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thor
Rating: T (for now)
Relationships: Loki/Jane Foster
Fic Summary: AU. A sort of gender-swapped fairy tale. Loki is the Sleeping Beauty and clever Jane Foster is the hero.
~
Long ago, a good Christian king came to these lands. He slew the Fair Folk and those he did not, were driven across the northern sea. But his victory was short-lived, for the plague soon swept across the land, ravening every village and town. Soon, only one out of ten men survived.
Fearing for his life, the king retreated into the Ravenwood to build a fortress far from the pestilence-ridden towns. He ordered his men to cut down all the trees around the foundation for a quarter of a mile. A great fortified tower was built within a year. It soared over the trees and the king felt sure the plague would never reach him there.
But the forest was not so easily defeated and within a fortnight, the trees had grown back. The trees were cut down once again, their wood used in the construction of the fortress. But no sooner had a fortnight passed that the king awoke to shouts of fear and dismay from his men. The forest had returned, this time thicker and darker than before, spilling down the half-finished walls, the roots of the great trees reaching the foundations of his tower.
The king understood then that a curse was on the land, and in desperation, he burned the Ravenwood; every alder, ash, and elm. Every hawthorn, maple, and oak. He burned them until only a forest of charred stumps remained. And the king looked out from his tower and finally felt at ease.
That night, he fell into a deep sleep and slept as soundly as he ever had. He slept a dreamless sleep for what must have been a night and a day. For when he woke again, it was dark. The king stretched, drew back the curtains from his bed, and promptly screamed. The window of his tower room was completely overgrown with ivy. Ivy choked out the light of the sun, it wrapped around his bed, his table and chairs. At every window, green. Vines crawled up the mossy staircase. Tree roots buckled the floors. And horror of horrors, vines wrapped tightly around the bodies of his men where they slept or sat, moss covering their limbs, mouths open in silent screams, voices choked by briars.

Dragon’s Princess
Tumblr media
Staring down at the Princess I was intrigued by such a strange predicament I find myself in, A Princess not even in the prime of her life stood before me, her hair was pure white that flowed down to her waist as her eyes, oh how those red eyes looked at me with such determination that it made me reel back, just what exactly did she want from me again?
“Excuse me,” I clean my left ear with a sharp talon as I listen closer to her “But do repeat yourself? I’m afraid I didn’t quite hear right” I say simply despite me not using my voice after such a long time.
She huffs in slight annoyance “I want you to steal me away from my kingdom!” She exclaims.
I blink, I blink again, then once more, the small princess still stood there so of course I wasn’t daydreaming, I honestly thought I was at just how beautiful she was.
“So I did hear it right, but why on earth would a Princess want to be stolen away from her own Kingdom? And by Dragon no less”
She crosses her arms in front of her “My people always exude your reverence, how the fear you set in my people's hearts is as old as time itself, no one dares cross you or set forth a party to hunt you down, so I know that if you steal me away that they will not follow” She answers truthfully.
I stood tall with my wings properly tucked behind me with only a little flare, making me appear more bigger and menacing as intended as I stare down at her with magenta eyes.
“And what makes you think I won’t just eat you, you are by far the most beautiful snack I have seen by far” I say cooly as wisps of black smoke surround her.
I take in great pleasure when I see her wince, that flash of fear, that hesitant glance towards the exit gate, it all made me purr as I circle around her, making sure to block her exit, curious as to see just what she was going to do. Of course I wasn’t really going to eat her, haven’t done that since I accidentally swallowed Gallous but I threw him up afterwards, humans were such distasteful creatures, hardly washed themselves… Their blood on the other hand…
She closes her eyes tightly as her hands balled up into little fists “I- I don’t care!” She shouts “Anything is better than staying there any further!”
I blew out a puff of smoke through my nose, slightly disappointed, surely I thought she would have ran out the door screaming, I would catch her and tell her it would be alright. I open my maw to speak when I see a tear falling down her face, I sighed softly at this. She’s probably some Princess who couldn’t stand the burden of the crown or something, I’ll just play along and once she’s back into her own kingdom she’ll find the right foothold and change her mind and completely forget about this.
I lean back down, propping my head with a mighty claw as I smirked playfully “I only jest little Princess, I mean you no harm” I say finally.
That hopeful look in her eye as she glances back up at me, her eyes shining brightly.
“So the reports are true” She makes the off handed remark.
“Reports now hmm~?” I encourage her to speak more of the matter as she takes the hint.
“Well I was researching on dragons when I saw that you made no attacks on humans nor has there ever been a report of you attacking villages, it was a long shot but I was willing to do anything in order to… to-” she was cut off by my soft chuckling, “DO I amuse you in some way?!” she exclaims.
I couldn’t help it, a well read Princess surely would have come from a prosperous Kingdom, was she truly so childish to simply run away.
“Forgive me Princess, but I have been without conversation for such a long time” I lied through my teeth, something so easy to escape my lips with as much smoothness as honey itself “To hear of a Princess researching about me, and for you to actively search me out, it is positively unheard of” I laugh lightly once more, bemused. “Any other dragon would surely snatch you up in their talons, I on the other hand am not like them, I find great amusement by your persistence”
Her face lit up like flame as her pale cheeks flushed a scarlet red “Are you going to help me or not?!” She shouts at me this time.
I yawn as I stretch, my wings extending at full length before wrapping around myself “Go back to your Kingdom little Princess” I say as I roll myself onto my side and closing my eyes.
“Please!” She begs, running around myself as she places her hands onto my snout “I beg of you, Please steal me away!”
I could hear her crying now, I open one eye to see red orbs blurred with tears as she looks at me with desperation. I could feel my heart wretch at the sight as my ears droop down, I just couldn’t see her in such a state any longer.
Defeated I blew blue flames that swirled around her, leaving no heat or pain as they danced around her, pushing her away as well as twirling her as I rose once more.
“Very well, return to your Kingdom Princess, within a fortnight I will come for thee, You will be my prisoner until I see it fit to release you, you will obey me no matter what, do you understand my terms?” I demand of her as she nods her head all the while wiping her tears away “And you agree to my demands?” Once more she nods.
“Uh-huh” She says with a shaky voice.
I sighed at this “Very well, return to your Kingdom Princess and I will steal you away, I bid you farewell and safe travels” I say as I turn away from her, allowing her to leave my grace.
She gave a curt bow “Thank you so much Dragon of the Northern skies, Thank you, I shall await for you to steal me away” She was smiling so brightly now as she went to take her leave.
I listen to her footsteps as she left through the long corridor until the large doors of the castle barely gave a small creek, she was struggling to open the door wide enough to allow herself to leave and with a flap of my wings, the same as when she arrived, the doors swayed open and then she was finally gone. I yawned as I went to take my rest, it had been so long since I had spoken to a mortal, it was quite entertaining, if only it happened during the night, surely I would have played a lot longer, but with the sun high in the sky my rest demanded me to retreat into the darkness.
I would have too, if it weren’t for my drake “Your Highness, are you sure you should toy with a Princess like that?” That annoying voice spoke out, disturbing my peace.
“What of it? Surely she is just some child wanting to be free of responsibility, nothing that should concern me” I swiped my tail at the small drake, he was no bigger than my claw and yet he was so much quicker as he jumps up onto a pillar to escape my tail. “Or should it Bartholomew”
The grey drake with mossy green scales crawled back down the pillar and into my full view as his yellow eyes fixated on mine.
“A Princess must keep Promises she makes to any of her subjects” He comments, pointing out one of my own duties.
I rolled my eyes at this “I haven’t acted as Princess of this land for a century, I am sure that time will wash away this one little promise” I say as I roll away from him, closing my eyes “She will come to her senses nonetheless, she is royalty after all and must follow duty to herself, and her people” I couldn’t help but look up at the stained glass mural that depicted a black dragon with purple eyes standing face to face with a mortal man “Just as I have done so many times before”
“Very well, but just so you know you are still a Princess to me” he states with a bow, which earned him a swipe of my tail, for which he avoids once more.
“Oh just go, I am very tired”
“Very well princess” He had to scurry out of the room as I breathed red flames towards him.
Walking down the empty hallways of my grand castle I stop for a moment to peer out onto a balcony, the sun was past the midday sky, surely I would have been resting a long time ago but something was amiss, I kept feeling as if I had forgotten something, and it bothered me to no end. My tail kept swinging back and forth in deep contemplation. Little did I know it had been two weeks since that princess had came as my promise to her was the very thing to bother me.
I was disturbed by the sound of claws running rather quickly down the hall, I turn to see Bartholomew running towards me.
“Princess” He gasps, obviously he had ran all the way to me, but for what reason would warrant such actions.
“What is it Bartholomew, go on, speak up” I encourage him, hoping that he would satiate my bothered mind.
“It’s the Ravenwood Kingdom Princess” He gasps.
A faint memory hits me “Ah, yes, I hear they are still ruling most of my territory, what about them?”
He coughs behind his hand as he gave a deep bow “I am sorry to say this, but it appears the Kingdom Ravenwood is holding a wedding”
I only look down at him “And? Is this not a joyous occasion? Surely they would never forget to invite me, and again I will send them a gift and my best regards” I say as I went to dismiss him, only for him to wince.
“I am sorry I did not say this any clearer, but the Ravenwood Kingdom is holding a wedding today, and they… Did not send... You, an invitation” his words died in his throat the more he finished his sentence.
In that instant my tail slams onto the ground, shattering the marble to mere dust, my eyes turning a brighter magenta as they glowed ominously.
“Surely you jest, to not invite me to such an important occasion is an act of great disrespect, or have I fallen out of their favor?” I ask, my eyes narrowing at him.
He was shaking now “O-Of course not! Surely they are not stupid enough to not invite you”
“Then why have I not received an invitation? Surely you would have received it a month prior to this arrangement” I point the blame to him as he stood rigid before bowing once more.
“N-No my Princess, I have not received any letters of correspondence to the wedding, so the must be doing something that may displease you” he quickly adds.
My tail once more began to sway “Perhaps they are marrying into another ones territory, either way this is a grave offence to me, prepare the looking glass” I say as I turn towards one of my study rooms.
Bartholomew ran ahead of me as he opens a pouch, taking out purple dust he blows it over a large crystal ball that stood on a single legged table, constantly holding balance with no reason. The crystals insides began to swirl with purple and black smoke as I approached it.
“Show me the Ravenwood’s wedding” I demand as I blew purple flames around the crystal ball.
The clouds of magic departed to reveal a scenery before me, the Kingdom of the Ravens were busy with some sort of affair, the setting was very familiar to me as it was none other than a wedding. Not just any wedding by the looks of it, there were two soldiers, both wearing different insignia’s, both belonging to a different King. This was a wedding of a royal, or two in face. I wave my claw over the looking glass as it began to chance once more.
“Show me the Princess” I spoke out as the vision closed in on what was suppose to be the blushing bride, only to see the beautiful maiden who had spoken to me weeks ago.
She was curled up in a ball on the window sill as she stares out at the kingdom when a maid enters her room.
“Your highness, we really should get you prepared for the wedding” The servant calls out to her.
The Princess threw a pillow at the maid “I don’t want to! I can’t marry that Prince, I don’t love him!” she shouts.
“The King made the decree that you needn’t love someone in order to marry, it is for the good of the Kingdom” She tries to reason with her.
At that my eyes turned a deep red, Bartholomew visibly shrank away as he heard this, I place a hand onto the crystal as my claws dared to scratch the surface.
That damnable King dare change a sacred ruling of the world?! I growled as I had heard enough.
“We’re going Bartholomew” I say as I turn away from the crystal ball.
“Where to my Queen?” He asks, running alongside me.
I allow my magic flames to envelope me as I feel my form changing, morphing into that of a mortal human.
“We are going to crash a Wedding” I proclaim as my eyes glowed a vibrant green.
“May I suggest a Royal gown first your highness?” He inquires.
I sighed at this “Very well, even if they have offended me it would be disrespectful of me to show up like this” I say while peering down at my naked form. “But I’m keeping my horns, they need to know who they have crossed” I say as I trail a claw down my curved horn.
“I would have it no other way your highness” He states while pulling out a dark green gown with black lace. “Does this suit your taste my Princess?” He asks.
I nod to this “Thank you Bartholomew” With a snap of my talon it was already on me, “Now let us make haste, I do not wish to waste a second more”
“Yes your highness”
Breathing into my hand green flames came to life as it lingers in my grasp, leaking to the side as the green flames fall to the ground, being sure that my drake stood by my side before I threw the fireball at our feet, it consumed us as I use my magic to direct us towards the kingdom just south of my mountain.
It has been a while since I have stepped on mortal made structures, looking around I see that the townspeople have grown since the beggars they once were. I have watched over this city but as of late I have neglected the insight to this town for several years, since the birth of their fair Princess in fact.
I held my head high as each of the lower nobility as well as the commoners saw me, each departing and making a pathway for me to walk right into the castle doors. Some had no clue who I was, and yet their natural human instincts told me I was not to be trifled with as even the guards hesitate to stop me, all but one, the captain of the royal guard.
“I’m sorry… Miss… But I cannot allow you inside” He says matter of factly.
I glance into his eyes and saw a mere child, even though he was in the prime of his years he had not once tasted the crossing of blades or the rages of war, no he was born beneath the previous captain, one who neglected to teach him about me.
“I suggest you step aside Captain, you do not truly wish to cross paths with me, I can only hope the letter of invitation addressed to me was lost on delivery” I say with my royal voice.
He looks at me then at my drake who stood as a mortal butler, “She is the great Dragon Princess of the Northern skies, to not invite her would be a great offense to her name, I suggest you let us inside” His eyes briefly shone their luminescent gold as the Knight stepped aside.
“Y-Yes, please for- forgive me for intruding” I continue to stare at him before turning my direction towards the front doors.
I didn’t even wait for the guards to open the large and grandeur doors as I send for large bright blue flames that thrusted the doors open with a bang.
Everyone's heads turn towards me and I return with an equal stare, lifting my hand down I summoned my royal staff, how could I have forgotten, when a dragon visits royalty it is best to show a sign of content.
“My, My, My” I say softy “A wedding, “how marvelous” I walked slowly down the aisle as all their little heads follow me.
“What a lovely little crowd you have before you” I say as I glance around the room “Nobility from far lands,” I then saw a child currently being pulled towards a gaunt woman dressed up in what would pass as barely formal attire “And even commoners of all sorts” I could feel my eyes shining now as my claws dare escape me, but I held my formality, I had to be polite after all.
“And yet” I place a finger to my lips in quiet curiosity “I had not received an invitation,” My staff clacks to the ground, making everyone flinch “How… Strange” I then looked at the King who was visibly blanching in his royal robes.
“You wouldn’t happen to know why, do you King Araan” I hiss his names as my voice change ever so slightly draconic.
As if reminded of who he was he stood a little straighter “You were not invited to this Royal Affair, You have no power here so leave!” He dares command of me.
I couldn’t help but laugh at the feeble kings remark “I have no power here?” I say whimsically, my eyes then shone a bright red, I could feel my fangs protrude as I glare at the King “Do you forget whose land you inhabit!?” I growled.
The King took a step back, fear flashing his gaze before he shoots his hand forth “Seize her! She has threatened your King!” He demands.
I watch a many knights began to charge their way towards me, I smirked at how cute they were charging insync with one another. Breathing in deeply I exhale purple flames around me, creating a circle of embers that danced around me, consuming me as I allow myself to transform. My broad tail sweeping the white marble floors and shoving everyone away as my large draconic form takes up the room, towering high above them I stare with azure eyes.
“In all my years each King has always paid due respect to me, you are the first foolish enough to cross me” I had made sure I used my draconic voice, sounding far more menacing than I had imagined “I have half a mind to lay waste to your entire Kingdom!” I shout in a thunderous boom that shook the land itself.
The King could only stare up at me in pure shock, in all the tales he had heard as a boy he had never thought that a dragon would be so terrifying.
Everything was going just as planned, and to show how powerful I was I slammed my claw down, my claws puncturing the hard ground as if it were mere papyrus as the surface cracked and crumbled under sheer force.
I stepped closer to the King “Now give me a reason why I shouldn’t lay waste to this land for the utter disrespect you have shown” I demanded as I stare deeply into the King’s eyes.
It was then a Knight dressed in gilded gold stood before the King “If you threaten this land then you threaten the land of the West! The Silvereagles will fight for what is rightfully theirs!” He shouts, aiming a silver blade to me.
I narrowed my eyes at him “And You” I spat at him like vile venom “You have showed the greatest offence of them all!” I slammed my claw down next to him, he dodges out of the way despite me not particularly aiming for him, but to simply separate him from the Princess. “An act of Marriage is the reunion of two souls meant to be by choice! This arranged marriage sickens me far greater than the disrespect you have displayed”
It was then an idea formed in my head as I grin down at them “But all can be forgiven” I say callously as I tuck my wings back behind me.
“P-Please! Anything! But spare my people!” The King begs, getting down on his knees before me.
In that instant I flew up, aiming down I swooped down at grabbed the Princess in my talons before flying before the entire Kingdom.
“For disrespecting me as well as the old ways, your Princess now belongs to me, I will take this sacrifice so that you may learn the fault lies with you!” With that I let out a mighty roar, the glass behind me shattering and allowing me to have an escape route “I am Dovakulaas the dragon ruler of these lands and beware my wrath should you choose to cross me once again, I promise you I will not be so kind should you be daft enough to cross me again!”
Turning away I flew up into the air, breathing out green flames ahead of me I create a portal to my lair so that they may not follow, flying through the green flames we left the Kingdom far, far behind.

The Winthrops
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Social class: Yeoman
Occupation: Beekeepers and Candle-makers (Chandlers)
Character biographies and screenshots of the house below the cut. This is a bit of a long one, just to warn you, lol.
Landon Winthrop
Traits and LTW: Hates the Outdoors, Couch Potato, Neat, Family-oriented, Frugal; Renaissance Sim
Landon’s great-great-grandparents emigrated from Everford to Tredony with the Ravenwoods to act as their servants and serfs. When Prosper Ravenwood was a child, Landon’s grandparents moved the family up into the Yeoman class, leaving the Ravenwoods without a live-in serf family. It was also at this time that Landon’s great-great aunt married a man from a neighboring village, who’s last name was Pritchard.
Landon's first wife Hortense died of ranting shortly after their son Graham was born. To cope with his despair, he made a pilgrimage to Yacothia to seek spiritual guidance from the Jacoban shepherds. While there, he met Isidora and her sister Anya, who were looking to leave Yacothia. Landon fell in love with Isidora, married her, and brought both sisters back to Ravenwood to live with him and his sons.
As a family-oriented man, his biggest priority is to make sure his family is taken care of.
Isidora Winthrop
Traits and LTW: Supernatural Fan, Rebellious, Loves the Outdoors, Frugal, Green Thumb; Alchemy Artisan
Isidora and her sister Anya grew up on a peasant farm in Yacothia. The local Jacoban church owned most of the property where they lived, and their family worked the land as tenant-farmers. Unfortunately, her parents died of the flu during a minor outbreak in the area when Isidora was a teen. The girls managed to live on their own for a while, but the ever-increasing rent and taxes levied by the Jacoban church made it difficult.
When Isidora met Landon Winthrop while he was on his pilgrimage, she and Anya saw an opportunity to get out of Yacothia for good and hopefully start their adult lives on easier footing.
She's always been curious about the supernatural, though she's been illiterate for most of her life, so she hasn't been able to do much research. Now that she's moved up in social class, perhaps now she'll have the opportunity to learn to read and to learn more about the supernatural.
Eric Winthrop
Traits: Over-emotional, Charismatic, Childish, Equestrian
Eric is Landon's eldest son from his first wife, Hortense (may she rest in peace). He gets along well enough with his step-mother Isidora, but he still feels a bit lost after the death of his mother. He's been having pretty bad mood swings lately.
As the oldest child, he's expected to continue the family business of beekeeping, but his real dream is to become a horse breeder one day.
Graham Winthrop
Traits: Couch Potato, Virtuoso, Insane
Graham doesn't remember much about his mother, but he definitely inherited some of her quirks, like arguing with himself or pretending to be a dog on occasion.
Ever since a traveling music troupe made a stop-over in Ravenwood last year, he's had a strong interest in music, but his family can't afford any instruments right now. Perhaps he can make some money on the side and save up for a lute?
Sofya Winthrop
Traits: Genius, Easily Impressed
Sofya is Landon and Isidora's only child together so far. She doesn't seem to take after either of her parents, but we'll see how she grows and develops.
Anya Petrov
Traits and LTW: Loves the Outdoors, Natural Cook, Light Sleeper, Snob, Lucky; Bottomless Nectar Cellar
Anya is Isidora's elder sister. After she lost both of her parents in a flu outbreak, Anya decided to become a healer, in addition to her other duties on the family farm. As the oldest, she was expected to marry right away, but no one in town could hope to meet her high standards. So the two sisters struggled on their own for a while, until they ran into Landon Winthrop while he was on a pilgrimage.
When Landon asked Isidora to marry him and move back to Ravenwood with him, Isidora agreed, but under the condition that Anya stay with them until she found someone to marry as well. Landon had no objections; taking care of family was important to him, after all.

Showtime
Guess who finally edited and formatted their fic for @spiralstudyhall‘s event!!!!! Decided to go with Mari, and the fact that she plays the violin, then added some magic in for flavor.
Content warnings, not many, just implied injury I guess.
Mari wasn’t the type to get nervous easily. She was made of tougher stuff than that, she had not cowered when confronted with saving her world, other worlds, and the entire Spiral. She had stared down a master of necromancy and dared to battle him, and didn’t falter when she was face to face with a Dragon Titan.
So the fact that she was nervous now was irritating at best, even though she knew it wasn’t unreasonable.
She sighed, turning again in the twisting, box-filled hallways backstage. The Cirque Du Wisp was new, something that people were excited about, especially the talent show. Quests, assignments, and even parties were delayed simply because of something interesting and new, a rare occurence on a magical floating world like Wizard City.
And while Mari would always prefer the vast and vibrant landscape of Mooshu, or even her girlfriend’s home world of Krokotopia, Wizard City had a certain charm to it. While Mooshu had many, many festivals and different events, she had never had the chance to compete in a talent show.
Mari cracked her knuckles, listening to each pop and trying to calm her nerves as she found where the odd charmed mannequins had guided her to, where she was supposed to sit calmly and wait until her name was announced as the strange ringmaster told her at auditions.
Their methods were strange, but terribly clever. Separate rips in magic and space allowed for dozens of rooms so the contestants wouldnt interact before the show, making sure they didn’t know what they were up against and weren’t able to sabotage anyone. Not that Mari would.
Well, she would for certain people, but barring that, she would follow their rules.
With a shaky breath, she sat down on a plastic chair, careful of stray objects pulling at her coattails. While she would normally wear a sari, because they’re more fun and dramatic, she didn’t want to deal with others asking about it, and she’d have a harder time with her new boots.
Combat boots didn’t fit well with traditional indian attire, not when she could trip onstage.
So she bought a dark green, velvety conductor’s jacket in one of the many thrift stores in Wizard City, adjusted it a bit with magic, and she suddenly had a dramatic and showy outfit she could keep for any more events like this.
It felt like the room was deafened to the world outside. The gentle creak of old wood, most likely the floors and crates, was all she could hear. There wasn’t even a clock so Mari just sat there, staring at the instrument case on her lap.
She was tempted to pull it out and play, practice a few scales, maybe even her full routine- but she had no way of knowing when she’d be called up. It would just be her luck to be already in the middle of her song when she had to start it all over again, probably messing it up.
Mari wasn’t the most confident in her abilities. The only thing like this she had done before was at the Spiral Cup, a few years ago now. She hadn’t even won the dueling competition, even though she got to kick a teacher’s ass and also date a cute girl afterwards, which was as good as getting the trophy.
The attention and crowds weren’t something she was used to. She was invisible among the students of Ravenwood, another annoying theurgist who wouldn’t play by the rules. Even after saving the Spiral, she was just another name. Just as she intended. She didn’t do the best with people watching. Allies and friends, that was fine. But in Mooshu she and her family had lived a mostly isolated life in a small farming village, and that had made her the biggest social butterfly.
At least she wasn’t Emrys, who only made friends if they could tolerate him being an asshole for a few months and still not hate him.
Mari’s painted nails began to dig under the soft paper of old stickers on the case. They weren’t hers, and her old friend Lenora didn’t particularly care either, so at this point the old stickers of flowers and bugs were mostly just stress relievers for Mari to fidget with, a majority of them simply white silhouettes from age.
Lenora had given her the case and the instrument inside, insisting it counted toward her duties as a peer mentor. At the time it was mostly charity and pity. Professor Wu had pushed a fourteen year old Mari onto Lenora with no mercy, claiming that Mari needed a guide, especially because she hadn’t gone into music yet at her age, which was something many theurgists did before they even came to Ravenwood.
Feeling lonely, homesick, and out of her depth Mari listened to Lenora with rapt attention, even when the topics wandered from gossip and music to things they both were a bit more interested in, battle strategies and martial arts.
Mari had a lot of free time due to her lack of literally any friends, and Lenora just thought it was fun to let Mari follow her around like a lost puppy. It was like having a sister, something Mari had always wished for after her father adopted her brother.
Lenora was a fantastic big sister, and taught Mari a lot about being a life wizard, and being a musician, and being safe as a young woman questing in the Spiral. She taught her things that Mari’s father hadn’t had the time for, or had just forgotten.
When Mari was nervous about playing new pieces, Lenora had calmed her down, had been kind and patient with her in a way not many people were. Lenora made sure that Mari knew the facts about performing, much of her experience from old lessons and recitals she never wanted to go to.
“You don’t have to be the best, Mari. Just do your best. Know that whatever you did, as long as you didn’t purposefully mess up, it was your best. It might not be your best all the time, it may be an outlier. But knowing you’re doing your best is one of the ways we can let ourselves relax, let ourselves focus on what we’re doing, not what others are.”
With a last shaky breath, Mari let her fingers relax, eyes sliding closed as she relaxed, shoulders aching from how tense they had been. She was a badass. She wore combat boots and had tattoos and dyed hair. She was a badass hero who could play in front of her school and kick ass.
She could do this.
Mari let her eyes lazily open again, now much calmer. The room was still quiet, but another door was present, this one simply a doorway filled with darkness. She had been told it would lead her onto the stage, and would appear a few minutes beforehand to give her a warning. Her heartbeat was faster again as she realized what it meant. She’d be up next.
Sound was slowly filtering into the room, cheering, the dramatic voice of the ringmaster, strains of music as well. The act before her was drawing to a close, and she was almost up.
Standing, Mari brushed her jacket with an absentminded hand, making sure the collar was right and her black bowtie was in place. She hugged the case for a moment, almost as if it were a teddy bear. Adjusting her grip, she held it properly and straightened her spine, shoulders back, chin up, defiantly confident in the face of potential humiliation.
That was only if she messed up though. And she wouldn’t, not when she was doing her best.
“And up next! A young life wizard with her own original piece of music, alllllll the way from Mooshu! It’s Mahamari Jaaade!”
With a deep breath, Mari walked through the doorway, finding the glowing mark of tape that was right in the middle of the stage. The curtains were closed, but she knew the gaudy red and gold fabric would move aside in just a moment.
She kneeled for a moment, placing her case down right beside the mark, pulling out her instrument, fingers tracing reverently across the decadent whorls in the wood. She grabbed the instrument, standing and walking on shaky, bambi-like legs as she stood on her mark.
It was showtime.
The curtains parted to reveal the night sky, brilliant as always, the crowd swathed in darkness. A spotlight on her, only her. It was dead silent, and for a moment Mari wasn’t sure if it was because of her panic, a spell, or adrenaline.
She tucked the violin under her chin, raised the bow slowly. There were murmurs in the crowd, and she ignored them.
Mari began to play. She started slow- always slow, she appreciated the build up- and it was quiet, even though the magical amplification was applied to the stage. She played the notes precisely, as if it were her duty, as if it were simply all she knew. It was about something unattainable, missing a home she never had.
The crowd’s murmurs picked up again at the realization of her skill, but she played on, hearing faint shushing that made her lips quirk slightly. Her gaze was intense as she played though, and didn’t allow anything to distract her.
The song became more playful. And with that, Mari began to move. She wasn’t necessarily dancing, but it was fluid with the tempo, it changed with every note as it should. Gentle green magic began fluttering around her fingers, like hope in the heart of an orphan just adopted, and then the magic began to move, curling alongside the tattooed vines on her arm, then up to her shoulder, resting for a moment in a brief pause in the music, resting in the dip of her collarbone.
Mari found herself grinning slightly, reminiscing on a young Emrys, the excitable children they used to be, the ignition for her spell. The magic leaped off of her shoulder, wobbling midair as a sphere, and fell. It splashed onto the wooden floor of the stage like a teardrop, every little speck that flew outwards becoming birds, the small creatures a translucent, glowing mint green. The pool in the middle remained, just a few feet away from Mari’s boots.
The birds flew around the crowd, dipping and diving so close that the faint screams of some wizards could be heard. Mari’s grin devolved into a smirk as the notes became more jumpy, unsure. More vines of magic grew up both of her arms.
The birds flew back home, to the nest. As they flew above the stage in a flock, they combined into two beings, both falling onto the stage gracefully. One was a sleek leopard, mischievous, low to the ground. The other was almost the same creature, but instead of a vibrant green, it was an almost blue cyan, and fluffier, immediately pouncing on its companion playfully.
The leopards ran together, almost blurring into one creature. They were silent, but their movements were to Mari’s music, to her now happy and adventurous playing. She was still now, no longer restlessly pacing like a wildcat in a cage. The leopards chased and played around the stage, having no companion but each other, beginning to circle tighter and tighter around Mari, who stood on the mark she had started on, next to her case.
When they were almost close enough that Mari could feel the heat of the magic, she knew it was time. With a sharp, startling note, the snow leopard stumbled, falling into the puddle of magic Mari had left in the beginning, disappearing.
The lights went dark, as did most of Mari’s magic, aside from the now almost lime green of the leopard, the one that represented Mari. The creature looked frantically around, pacing and snarling to the now discordant tunes, swiping at nothing with the random jumps and changes in her music.
Quicker and quicker Mari played, her fingers twitching and movements perfectly small, the music hauntingly fast, a track in an old school thriller movie, the chase of the monster and the victim. On and on the leopard searched, until she moved slower and slower, shuddering to a halt, until finally she collapsed.
But still Mari played quickly, trying to convey how terrifying it all was, to become helpless, exhausted, unable to save anyone even as they grew closer and closer to being lost forever. The useless search, the way it ripped at a wizard inside, the millions of tricks they can pull out of their hat but unable to find one that’ll bring him home.
Sometimes they just have to help themselves, as cruel as it is. It’s the only way.
The music was slowing slightly, now more regular, a fast heartbeat thudding. The puddle of magic the snow leopard had been swallowed by appeared again, and Mari could hear the audible gasps as the cyan paw of the creature appeared, and the snow leopard began clawing his way out, a permanent snarl embedded on that ferocious face. His ragged claws left deep furroughs of magic in the floor, glowing and not affecting the stage. He pulled himself out of hell, swiping at anything, and if he could have harmed Mari, she would be dead before she could scream.
The snow leopard began limping away, and Mari’s music finally settled. The tones became lonely again as the search began anew, now the snow leopard looking for the leopard. He was in a daze, limping heavily, leaving a trail of bright magic behind, the blood stains never fading.
Then, he found her, curled up and asleep, as if afraid of waking up alone again. Mari’s playing became quieter and quieter as the snow leopard neared, almost as if in disbelief. He finally just settled, licking the leopard’s cheek once so the fur stuck out funnily, and fell asleep, so they rested side by side, back to back.
With one final note, Mari drew the bow away from the violin, raising it as high in the air as one would a wand after a victorious battle. She held the violin away from her, by the neck of the instrument.
The magic went dark, only glowing now on the tattoo of her right arm. A spotlight lit on her, only her.
And the crowd screamed.
Mari grinned, taking a dramatic bow, her heart pounding as she stood there, a wave of roaring cheers and clapping crashing over her.
Seems like doing her best was a pretty good idea.
