Sometimes I randomly remember that Kaz is the only member of the Crows who only speaks one language and for no apparent reason I find that endlessly amusing.

Like, the comedic potential here? Nina and Inej girl talking but as soon as he walks in the room they switch to Ravkan?? Wylan and Nina chatting in Kerch but then switching to Fjerdan when Matthias walks in and suddenly Kaz has completely lost track of the conversation?? Jesper saying something to Kaz in Zemeni that makes Nina howl with laughter, but neither of them will tell him what it was??? It’s so funny to me.

He would also absolutely start learning another language out of sheer spite if they did this, but I think it would be hilarious if he chose Kaelish and tried to use it with Jesper and Jesper would just be like “… I don’t speak Kaelish. I just know a little bit… I can sing in Kaelish, if you want?” and Kaz is so disappointed by this but he can’t show it so he just starts yelling at Nina in Kaelish instead. She corrects his pronunciation and he nearly murders her.

Everyone’s having fun.

I think a lot about what the way they talk can tell us about our Crows. For example, interjections.

Unsurprisingly, Nina and Inej use all variants with Saints (Saints; All Saints; For Saints' sake) and Wylan uses Ghezen (Ghezen; Ghezen and his works). Matthias of course has Djel (Djel; Sweet Djel; For Djel's sake).

Now comes the interesting part. Jesper uses Saints, many times in his own creative way (Saints; All Saints; For Saints' sake; All Saints and your Aunt Eve; All Saints and the donkeys they rode in on) and (!) he also uses Ghezen (Sweet Ghezen). It's quite obvious that Jesper adopted Ghezen during his long stay in Ketterdam, but since he uses Saints much more often, it seems like something he got from his father as a child, since Colm also said many similar things in CK (All Saints; Saints; For Saints' sake). Do they recognise Saints on Wandering Isle? Probably.

And then there's Kaz. What do you think of his interjections? Have you noticed or thought about it? Kaz out loud never used any! Not Ghezen, not Saints, not Djel. There is only one exception where the interjection was part of his inner monologue.

Chapter 3, SoC:

"As Kaz headed down one of the little canals that would take him past Fifth Harbour, he realised he felt – Saints, he almost felt hopeful."

Oh yes, Kaz in his head when no one could hear him automatically used Saints and it wasn't because he wanted to mentally tease Inej about her Saints. I think the moment he felt almost hope, something from his past slipped out of the dark parts of his mind where he buried everything related to his family. Do we know for sure that Ghezen is the only god the Kerch people know? What about people from the countryside? Do they honour the god of industry, commerce and trade, or someone else who is closer to them? Who remembers where Marya Hendriks was kept? The Church of Saint Hilde. In addition, we also know two Kerch saints, Sankta Margaretha and Sankt Emerens. Coincidence? I don't think so.

Ex-Religious Jesper

Little Jesper, whose mother taught him all about the Zowa Saints. He would listen to the stories eagerly, one of the only times he would sit quiet and still. Entranced by the stories of Sankta Neyar, Sankt Egmond, and Sankta Margaretha, who had the same powers as him and his mother.

Little Jesper, who when his mother died and left him behind, stopped believing in the Saints. Not only encouraged by his father, but also due to the fact that his mother was not one of them. If they couldn’t protect her, the least they could’ve done was make her one of them.

Teen Jesper, who came to Ketterdam and met Kaz and Inej, and recognized the names of the Saints of Inej’s blades. He’d made the mistake of acknowledging that fact, and she asked him if he too was a follower of the Saints. She’d looked so excited, he hadn’t had the heart to tell her that he’d stopped believing in the Saints a long time ago.

Teen Jesper, who squirmed under the guilt of his mother’s religion every time he sat down at the tables, took their names in vain, took a life. He was zowa, his mother had always hoped he would be something more than this.

Adult Jesper, who is growing into his powers again with the help of Wylan. He’s far from a Saint, but he isn’t hiding from his abilities anymore. He’s made peace with the idea of Saints, having met a few himself, but he still doesn’t worship them.

Adult Jesper, whose only Saint is Sankta Inej, still prays before each of Inej’s departures that she’ll come back safely, for the sakes of all of Ketterdam.

i think one of the funniest things about the shadow and bone netflix combining sab and soc is that those bitches dont even speak the same language the only crows that speak ravkan are nina and presumably inej kaz speaking to alina is so funny to me bc he doesnt speak ravkan! and she doesnt speak kerch! obviously i understand why for logistical purposes they all speak the same language and i am perfectly willing to suspend my disbelief for the purposes of the show i'm just saying i find it amusing

I love it when an adaptation takes the trouble to follow the description of a costume from the source material. In Siege and Storm (the second book in the series), Sturmhond's outfit is described as follows: "He wore leather breeches, a brace of pistols at his hips, and a bright teal frock coat with gaudy gold buttons and enormous cuffs. It belonged in a ballroom or on an opera stage, not on the deck of a ship." I suppose you could quibble about the definition of "frock coat," but the overall effect of looking like a costume is spot-on!*

It has only, today, in reading Hallowe’en Party by Agatha Christie, occurred to me why Nina’s description of pomdrakon, the Ravkan celebration dessert of brandy-soaked raisins lit on fire and grabbed in the dark, has always felt so familiar to me.

We literally do it in England. Or at least, traditionally.

It’s called Snapdragon here, and it’s not something I’ve ever done but it’s the kind of thing that I’m aware was once a tradition. I’d completely forgotten about it until I read it today, and I thought “oh yeah I remember this” and then I thought “hey, it’s pomdrakon!” and then I thought for a minute about why the words itself had always felt familiar, and did a brief bit of googling to confirm that I was correct in thinking the anglicised version of the Russian word for “dragon” is, indeed, “drakon”.

So in summary this may have been obvious and it’s kind of weird I missed it because it’s like I knew but I hadn’t quite acknowledged that I knew, but I still thought it might be interesting.

always fascinated by people's different takes on the language barrier between kaz and the ghafas.

I think my personal opinion is that kerch, being the language of the center of commerce and an overall neutral party in the war, is kind of like english - in that it's an internationally spoken language, but certainly not by everyone. considering jesper spoke it well enough to go to university in ketterdam, even though he was a farm boy, it must be pretty widespread. matthias didn't speak it until hellsgate, but he also grew up very sheltered.

inej didn't speak kerch when she was taken, so it's reasonable to assume her parents didn't either. but maybe they spoke a little of it, like in some countryside places in europe? or maybe they learnt in their efforts to find her? or perhaps they focused their efforts inside ravka, and never learnt a word of it.

it's always suspicious to me that kaz never bothered picking up ravkan, being the strategic businessman that he is. I think he wouldn't hide that ability during the ice court/van eck mission if he had it, so either he can speak very little, or not at all; if not at all, it supports the assumption that kerch is the international business language, which is why he never bothered picking up a second language.

so would the ghafas learn enough kerch to communicate? I don't doubt that using inej as a translator would frustrate kaz to no end; words are his strongest weapon, so he'd definitely put effort into being able to communicate with them. but would he learn suli? or ravkan? suli would be a more personal gesture, which he'd see as a leverage to get the ghafas to like him. ravkan would be more useful in other ways, and we know how much kaz likes having more than one reason to do something.

Even if the Saints were Grisha, that doesn’t make what they did any less miraculous. Perhaps that's the issue. Who would like to see their witch neighbour celebrated as a Saint?! Remember- Saints suffer, Grisha don't...

Weird, coming from a person, who travelled it, and feels no ties to the country.

This would sound better from a Ravkan, who never left it. Someone, whose all world is Ravka.
