its an incredibly difficult job being the one and only fan of natsuko aki x honey kisaragi Specifically from re:cutie honey and cutie honey 2004 but someone has to do it.
ironically every other cutie honey version is either like painfully straight or painfully homophobic. most often both.
The cat’s out of the bag! Re: Cutie Honey has been licensed by Discotek Media! I’ve been keeping this a secret for what felt like an eternity. I’m super excited for these guys, since they’ve been trying to license Re: for a while now. I don’t know the exact details but it was in licensing limbo up until recently.
I was lucky enough to work on this upcoming release. I gave some input on the English script, terminology for the subtitles, I wrote up the packaging summary as well as a ton of liner notes!
The English dub is fantastic. They really did a phenomenal job here. It’s wonderful hearing Jessica again and a lot of other returning voice talents. Brady and the team did a great job of hunting down actors for cameo parts too.
How to defrost an ice queen: hugs. Lots of them.
(yes, I still ship Honey/Viluy. And Nat-chan is there too because she's cute. :v)
Everything about this wonderful chibi piece is done by @jisatsu-draw, so go and give her the thanks she deserves. :)
It was a pleasant surprise to see Re: Cutie Honey has been picked up by Discotek for a US blu-ray release this year (including an English dub and other goodies).
While Re: is not my favourite incarnation of CH, it does have some great elements and Retrosofa helped contribute to the release so you know it has consistency with other Cutie Honey releases from the company (and a dedicated fan's touch). I know I'll be adding it to my (extremely cramped) collection of blu-ray releases when it hits shelves!
On that topic, one of the things that I noticed was brought up quite a bit in Discotek's twitch stream today by fans regarding licenses was "more old magical girls" with examples being Cutey Honey Flash, Mermaid Melody, Tokyo Mew Mew, etc. (all of which were mentioned by folks in the chat, not the guys from Discotek themselves -- though there was a moment of confusion brought about by the use of "Honey... Flash!")
The Discotek team asked everyone who is interested in titles like this to order releases like their upcoming Saint Tail complete blu-ray set (scheduled for April 2023) because the unfortunate reality is that they can't distribute what doesn't sell.
I'm as broke as anyone else, but if physical media released in English is important to you and you do want more of these older, less marketable titles, I have to say "buy similar titles to your faves when you can." Companies like Discotek can only justify picking up things like kids shows and magical girl titles if there's an audience keen to buy them. So if it's feasible for you to do so, definitely purchase the next BD set from them that interests you.
