#read act i of my pilot in class and i’m honestly really excited about it
Text
Adam Young, to his horror and occasional bleak amusement, had turned out to be extremely good at politics.
When he spoke at public meetings, people came up to him afterwards to shake his hand; when he sent out press releases, people not only read them, but wrote letters to various editors with his name bracketed by phrases like ‘integrity’ and ‘bright future in the party.’ He was single-handedly skewing voter turnout for South East England. Labour had done some assessment polling for a run at MP, and Adam had reduced the poor analyst to tears when he told her he wasn’t interested in being anything more than Councillor, sorry. He’d had to sit there for twenty minutes, awkwardly patting her shoulder as she blew her nose on her spreadsheets and sobbed about response rates.
“It’s your hair,” Brian decided. “Makes you look like an RAF pilot in one of those old movies. People look at someone with hair like that and think, ‘Gosh, I bet he knows what he’s doing.’”
After a period of vague muddling, Brian had somehow found his way to medicine and shocked everyone who knew him by doing rather well at it. He was onto his Foundation training now, though Adam suspected that a steady diet of black coffees and biscuits swiped from the blood donor centre had driven him insane.
“I don’t know what I’m doing, though!” Adam said. “Or at least, only very rarely.”
“Well, of course we know that,” Pepper said with an indulgent smile. Pepper had gone into safeguarding, and while it had not made her insane, it had made her slightly insufferable.
“Maybe you could shave it all off,” Brian said. He was squinting at Adam’s head as though proposing a particularly risky cranial surgery. “Nobody’s bald in films.”
“Bruce Willis is bald,” Pepper said. “And Sean Connery.”
Brian rolled his eyes and sighed. “All right, fine, John McClane and James Bond are bald. But Adam’s not exactly an action hero, is he? If you’re going to bald, you have to carry a gun. Adam, do you honestly want to carry a gun?”
“I really don’t think it’s my hair,” Adam said morosely.*
Pepper would later claim that she had written Wensleydale to see if had an opinion on Adam’s hair, and received a very rambling response in which Wensleydale traced the etymological origins of ‘hair’ and opined at length about the cultural meaning of braids, without ever weighing in on the matter. However, while this definitely sounded like Wensleydale, who was holed up doing research in some archive in Seville, Adam strongly suspected it had actually been a love letter to Pepper. Mostly because she refused to show it to him, and went blushing and defensive whenever he asked.
(In the old days, there might have been a well-meaning scrap about it. But Pepper had expanded upon her general knowledge of violence with krav maga training and jujitsu classes and probably other arcane martial arts; none of the Them would try anything against her now, honestly.)
Despite Adam’s hair and the wild civic adoration it apparently inspired, Adam did not particularly enjoy politics. He had, after all, been offered all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor; once you’d decided against that, being MP of Milton Keynes South lost some its attraction. He probably would have given up the whole thing and gone deep-sea diving, if it weren’t for two things:
First, that the boy who had loved Lower Tadfield into a gold-green summer afternoon in the English countryside had never really gone, just grown up; and second, that Adam Young had once been sentenced to a whole summer assisting Mr. R.P. Tyler, Chairman of the Lower Tadfield’s Residents’ Association, and had accidentally fallen in love.
...not, it should be said, with Mr. Tyler.**
Still, Adam Young had spent a whole summer filing camping permits, examining rummage sale forms, deciding whether to approve Ms. Shaddlebrook’s application to build a shed down by her garden, and referencing and re-reading bylaws. He had, as a consequence and quite inexplicably, fallen in love with the complicated, esoteric game of it all. It wasn’t as though the rules were secret or sacred. You didn’t have to always follow them. But if you wanted to play (if you wanted to win) you had to care, very much, about knowing them. To shape the world the way you wanted meant knowing how it was; you couldn’t break, bend or snap what you didn’t understand. And by the end of that dry, hot, sixteen-year-old summer, even Mr. Tyler had seemed somewhat grudgingly impressed. There weren’t many teenage boys who could quote section, chapter and verse, when questioned about why their loitering outside the corner store was actually an expression of freedom of assembly under the Human Rights Act and by incorporation, the Lower Tadfield Charter. So there.
When he passed, Mr. Tyler had left Adam his annotated copy of the Residents’ Association bylaws, with an inscription: To Mr. Young, a Fiend ‘til the end.
Adam had been deeply touched.
Anyhow, what it meant was: that all these years later, MK Councillor Young was good at administration. He liked spreadsheets, comparative studies, charts, references, citations, and ultimately was very good at what he did. He hosted meetings for the community to talk about new parish initiatives, where there was always coffee and doughnuts since otherwise people wouldn’t show up. He found the dull, dry grind of it all very soothing, since it was hard to imagine anyone getting particularly excited about an Antichrist who enjoyed maintaining the highways register.*** It was better, that way.
Unfortunately, it also meant that by the time the news reached him, it was very likely too late. After all, who would have thought that some minor local councilor, notable for being young-ish, left-ish, generally fine if nothing more exciting, would care about the End of Days?
* It was probably being the Adversary, Destroyer of Kings, Angel of the Bottomless Pit, Great Beast that is called Dragon, Prince of This World, Father of Lies, Spawn of Satan, and Lord of Darkness. That sort of thing generally came with the charisma built in.
** He would be horrified by the mere implication.
*** Not that roadworks were necessarily good—Adam knew what Crowley had got up to with the M25. But when people did bad things with transit construction, it generally fell into the category of ordinary, mundane evil that any human could do if they put their mind to it. Adam found this immensely comforting.

MCFISB FOR THE OTP ASK GAME
wow, mcfisb is my favorite, mcfisb is my otp
What was their first impression of each other?
Lance thought Fish seemed nice and charming and left that first class with pretty good vibes. Fish saw Lance crack a joke and, boy, can you say heart eyes? He basically went “oh, there you are and I’m in trouble.”
What is their ship name?
Mcfish!!! I love it!
Describe their relationship dynamic.
They are sunshine and happiness. This is a couple that feels forever young. They are so similar that it is so easy to read each other and through that bond they are able to understand themselves better too.
What was their relationship like before they got together?
They were classmates for years and they always got along very well, but they had different core friend groups growing up, Fish was one of the “popular kids” and that makes it harder to bond. Once Lance returns to Earth, they become very fast and close friends like they had wanted.
How would they describe each other?
Lance: “Fish is out of my league. He’s so magnetic. You see his smile and you know your day just got better." Fish: "Lance is like all of the cosmos wrapped together. He's so understandable, but so unpredictable. Who needs outer space with the adventure of a lifetime right there."
What do they love about each other?
So much...basically everything. They both especially love each other’s senses of humor. Fish loves Lance’s passion and protectiveness for others. Lance loves Fish’s comforting and positive nature.
What do they have in common?
They both love the ocean! They’re also both super ticklish and yell-singing to their favorite songs in the car.
What are some differences between them?
Lance dreamed of being a pilot and loves to fly, most moving vehicles scare the life out of Fish. He can’t imagine being the one behind the wheel.
What made them realize they were in love?
Fish kind of always knew that he would fall in love with Lance. By their first date he was already gone. Lance realizes on the Atlas, when looking out at the stars with Fish, he doesn't feel homesick anymore.
What are their love languages?
Tbh all of the types. They both use words and quality time the most though.
Do they get married? Who proposes and how?
They’re so married via a huge wedding with all the family and friends. After a special date night, Fish casually says he thought Lance was gearing up to propose. Lance says he thought Fish was gonna propose. They went “huh,” laughed, and got engaged.
What would happen if they never met?
That means one of them didn’t go to the Garrison, so like potentially the world would be destroyed.
Who dies first? How does the other one react?
Lol remember when Lance dies in like season 6? Sadly I do! At some point Lance makes a dark joke about it and Fish goes. What. Time to unpack that! And of course he cries.
Are there any love rivals?
Ha! Not really. Lance is over Allura by the time they’re back on Earth. Does Fish’s pact with James to marry when they’re 40 count? Nah.
Describe your favorite moment of that ship!
Their wedding...is perfect. It's big and loud and just a little flashy just like them. And they look perfect with the sun drooping down on the beach behind them. It really is just all the happiness of the past years with all the excitement for the future. Their best kiss isn't from the ceremony, it's on the dance floor surrounded by friends, with laughter mixed in.
What do other characters think about this relationship?
Hunk’s logic is Lance is fun and Fish is fun so together they are extra fun! Coran decides it’s his duty to vet Fish for Lance, but he eventually passes the vibe check.
Describe or write a really fluffy scene!
I don't have it written but I really want to. Their first date gives me cavities to think about. Lance goes in so nervous but there's Fish who just keeps asking for more of his stories as they're walking through the park. And they have some heart to hearts about when Lance was gone and it turns out his family already loves Fish?! Anyway, their first kiss is under the stars like it should be and Fish can't stop grinning the rest of the night.
Describe or write a really angsty scene!
Fish has a breakdown after seeing his sister after over a decade. When first meeting with her he’s trying so hard to bottle everything up and pretend he’s fine. Once she drives away, Lance just says “It’s okay to be angry, Eli. It’s okay to be sad.” And Fish just falls to the ground and cries in Lance’s arms after being so used to locking those feelings away for so long.
Talk about a headcanon you’ve never talked about before.
You specifically have heard everything I’m sure but let me try for something... Lance really loves watching Fish sing and dance because it’s not like he’s a pro or anything but he’s so lively that he gets sucked in.
What does a typical date look like for them?
Usually just grabbing a bite at one of their local haunts. Karaoke night is always a blast, too. Honestly, they always run into friends and end up hanging out with them for ours instead of just the two of them.
What’s a really significant moment in their relationship?
After things have calmed down and Lance is recovering in the hospital, Fish goes to visit and they are finally able to catch up without running around to prepare for a fight. Fish tells Lance out of nowhere that he’s “really glad you’re back.” It means a lot to Lance after feeling shelved for awhile.
Ask your own question! [Where do you see them in 20 years?]
They’re happily married and lamenting about how fast their four kids are growing up - most of them are in high school! They have a house near all of their friends because they’re saps. Fish would be a high-ranking officer and instructor for the tech department at the Garrison still, while I feel like Lance is more likely to retire earlier. They’re just happy and in love and still acting younger than they are.

Far From Home Ch.1
This will contain Spiderman: FFH spoilers! You have been warned! I also recommend reading Conflict before this if you haven't already!
"Extra change of clothes?"
An annoyed sigh. "Yes."
"Toothpaste?"
"YES."
"Your suit?"
"Oh my God! Mom! I'm not taking my suit with me on vacation!"
Peter throws his nanotech bracelet onto his desk and Stephen frowns. The sorcerer had been extremely suffocating the past couple of days because Peter was going on a trip to Europe and his Mama Bear side wasn't happy. It didn't matter that Stephen could open a portal in a matter of seconds. He took his maternal role a little too seriously sometimes.
"You know how Tony is about you not wearing--"
"I'll have my phone!"
Stephen narrows his eyes. "Do you have--"
"Okay! Bye!" Peter pushes the doctor out of his room and closes the door, and when he looks back to his open suitcase, he laughs when he finds Tibbs sitting in the middle of it. "Sorry buddy. You can't come." The kitten mews pathetically when Peter moves him and closes the bag before setting it by his bedroom door. "You have to be good for Mom and Dad okay? Especially Mom. I'm sure he's going to go crazy."
Tibbs meows in response as Peter grabs his plane ticket and passport, gathering the rest of  what he needs before grabbing his bag, leaving his room, and dragging it down to the elevator where Tony stands waiting. He thankfully didn't hover like Stephen had been, but he probably figured that the sorcerer was doing it enough for the both of them. In fact, the engineer tried to calm Stephen down and distract him from hovering for the past couple of days.
"Ready kiddo?"
Peter looks around. "Where's Mom?"
"Down in the garage waiting."
Peter raises an eyebrow but says nothing until Tony reaches for his bag with his right hand and the teen holds his hand out to stop him. The billionaire was still adjusting to his scarred side and sometimes forgot that it wasn't as strong as it used to be. Tony drops his arm after staring at it for a few quiet moments and instead guides his son to the elevator so FRIDAY can take them down to the garage. When they arrive, they find Stephen leaning against a car Peter only assumed he and Tony would be taking to the airport, and the engineer pops the trunk open. After the teen stows his luggage inside, Tony closes it back up as Mama Bear gets in some last minute fussing. Namely, a very long hug that even Peter wanted to get out of.
"Mom...its just two weeks."
Stephen smirks. "Two weeks of no cub cuddles." He laughs when Peter turns in his arms and tries to get away (mostly as a joke because if he really wanted to get away, he would have no problem) before finally releasing him. "Don't come crying if you need me later."
Tony snorts as he opens the driver side door. "Stephanie, you and I both know that's an empty threat. You will drop everything for him."
"Well he didn't know that." The sorcerer huffs out.
"Yes I did. It isn't exactly a secret." Peter says with a smug smile on his face and Stephen pushes him into the passenger side of the car.
"Behave. Have fun." Stephen says as he rounds the car to give Tony a kiss. "Be careful." He says quietly and then glances at his husband's arm. The arm that Tony lifts to grab the back of the doctor's neck.
"If it acts up, I'll ask FRIDAY to take over."
"Oh, I was talking about Peter."
Tony barks out a laugh and gives Stephen another kiss. "Of course you did asshole."
He ducks into the car and drives off to the airport, and when he pulls up to Peter's gate, Tony gets out with him and joins him at the trunk. As his son retrieves his bags, Tony pulls a small case out of his pocket and hands it over to the boy who looks at it with confusion.
"What is this?" Peter takes the case and opens it up to find a pair of glasses.
"Just in case." The teen gives him a look. "I know and see that you're not wearing your suit, so just humor me alright?"
"Dad, I have my phone--"
Tony sighs. "Peter...please." Hearing his name from his adoptive father got Peter's attention. Tony only ever used it when he was serious. "I lost you once."
I can't lose you again went unsaid,  but Peter heard it anyway and closes the case before stuffing it into his carry on bag. He hugs the elder man and feels the man land a kiss on the top of his head before they part and the teen heads into the building after an exchange of 'I love you's'. Peter goes through security on auto-pilot and eventually snaps out of his daze when he reaches his gate and finds his classmates sitting around in uncomfortable chairs. The teen grins when he notices an open spot next to Ned, and he walks over to drop into the seat, startling the other boy from his phone.
"Took you long enough. Dr. Strange wouldn't let you go?" Ned asks with a knowing smile.
"You know how much I like hugs and stuff right?" Peter starts.
"Uh, yeah."
"I wanted to get away." Ned laughs and Peter slumps in his seat. "Just when I thought he couldn't be any more suffocating." He looks at Ned and holds up his phone. "So what was this plan you wanted to talk about?"
"Oh! Right! Us!" Ned starts excitedly. "Us roaming Europe as bachelors! Europeans love Americans!"
Peter opens and closes his mouth before deciding to pinch the bridge of his nose. A habit he unconsciously picked up from Stephen. "Ned. You're forgetting a small little detail."
Ned gives him a funny look and then realization dawns on the darker male. "Holy crap. I forgot you're dating Ant-man's daughter--"
Peter shushes him and looks around to make sure no one was listening. "Secretly, Ned! Our parents don't know and we kind of want to keep it that way!"
"Dude, you still haven't told them?" Peter slaps the back of his friend's head. "Ow!"
"Have you met my parents and Scott?" Peter hisses. "Scott will try to maim me and Mom will wipe the floor with him for trying and that's just chaos we don't need!"
"Okay okay! Avenger parents are a lot crazier." Ned placates the vigilante and rubs the back of his head.
Peter mumbles under his breath and they talk about their plans as they wait for their flight, board the plane, and MJ climbs over them to take the window seat. The vigilante motions his hands when the girl steps on his legs to get to her seat and then rolls his eyes when she ignores him to grab a book out of her bag. Ever since the attack on Midtown years ago (but what felt like months for them), she had allowed herself closer to Peter and Ned and it got to the point where their friendship was similar to the boys. She had no problem barging into Peter's bedroom whenever she and/or Ned spent the night, and it usually ended up with her throwing something at his head to wake him up. It happened way too often and Tony didn't do anything because he thought it was hilarious. Stephen didn't either, but he at least didn't laugh.
"Hey, Stark Junior. Your girlfriend is texting you." Michelle says and waves Peter's phone around in her hand. The vigilante gapes and shoves his hands into his pockets before blushing and snagging his cell back.
"How did you even get that?"
"Easy. You were zoning out and I took it out of your hand. She's cute...so why is she with you?"
Peter wrinkles his nose. "Dude...ow."
Ned snickers from his other side. "He's asked himself that same question twice already."
"Just for that, I'm not translating for you guys in Venice." Peter snarks.
MJ's eyebrows fly toward her hairline. "You know Italian?"
Peter shrugs. "Yeah. May spoke a little bit, and now Dad drilled it into my head. It was kind of hard not to pick it up when he speaks it a lot."
"Oh yeah...Dr. Strange's kink." Michelle says dryly and Peter gags.
"Don't say kink. I already walked in on them once and I'm traumatized for life."
"Did your parents teach you any other languages?" Ned asks. At least with him he was always genuinely curious so Peter didn't always feel the need to hit his fist against his forehead in hopes that it would knock him out.
"French, Spanish, German...Mom is teaching me to read Sanskrit." Peter counts off with his fingers.
"Wow. I'm actually impressed." Michelle says.
Their conversation stalls as the plane takes off and MJ turns her attention to her book while Peter and Ned entertain themselves with PC games for a couple of hours. Ned actually played them for most of the flight, but Peter had started to nod off halfway through the flight. He had been too excited last night to get much sleep and it also didn't help that Tibbs caught onto his excitement and demanded the teen to play with him whenever Peter actually managed to fall asleep. He tried to shut his eyes for a little while, the commercial plane not nearly as comfortable as Tony's private jet, but he managed until MJ shook him awake. The vigilante gasps out quietly at the disturbance and finds both his friends looking at him with some worry. Well, Ned was. Michelle was doing a really good job of hiding it if she even was worried.
"Wh-what? Are we there?" He asks.
"No. You were flinching in your sleep." MJ whispers. Peter was about to ask why she was whispering but a quick glance around the cabin showed that the lights were dimmed. "We were afraid you would start screaming."
"Were you having a nightmare? Ned asks.
Was he? He honestly didn't remember and he told them as such. He did thank them for waking him up though. The last thing they needed was for him to make all of the plane occupants panic if he screamed in his sleep. The bit of shut eye he did get was enough to get him through the rest of the flight and through customs, and walking around Venice woke him up a little more. Peter was able to enjoy the little bit of sightseeing his class did before they made it to the hotel, and he almost laughed. If Tony had seen their accommodations, he probably would have had an aneurysm.
"Mr. Harrington is giving us time to rest before we head out again." Ned says as he drops his bag on the bed adjacent to Peter's.
"Good. I could use a nap without the fear of freaking other people out because I have nightmares." The arachnid zips open his suitcase and groans loudly when he finds his nanotech bracelet sitting on top of his clothes. "He is such a mom."
Ned joins him to see what he's looking at and laughs. "It's your own fault for giving him that role you know."
"Shut up Ned."

Final Fantasy in Review
I’m feeling a bit nostalgic today so here’s a review of some Final Fantasy games. These are just reads off of my personal experiences with them. Might contain a few spoilers here and there but if there are some they’re minor.
FINAL FANTASY - Stock fantasy story. Classic but also unremarkable and relatively short. Establishes a lot of the franchise’s hallmarks and is generally a good game. I like the red mage’s hat.
FINAL FANTASY II - All I remember about this one is that pretty much everybody dies. Also something about a gopher? First game with a chocobo in it so that’s exciting.
FINAL FANTASY III - This one got weird? I remember the early plot just being all over the place. Also do not like cloud of darkness’s design honestly. First appearance of the moogle and advent of the Job/Class system. I did not finish this game.
FINAL FANTASY IV - Just a bunch of redemption arcs in a trench coat + a kinda cheesy love triangle. That’s about it. This was one of my first video games ever and is still a strong favorite. Kain is so fucking stupid he’s an armor clad brick wall with the mental and moral fortitude of a single pine nut. I love him.
FINAL FANTASY V - I remember this game being long af but that might just be cause I was kind of young when I played it. Nice story. Lots of comic relief but not so much that it becomes overbearing. Also first explicit case of blatant furry bait what with roping in a whole wolfman species. Never got around to snooping out the last two pianos.
FINAL FANTASY VI - The overrated one that I like more. Also among the first video games I ever played. It was kind of formative for young me. The sound track fuckin slaps and Searching for Friends is one of the things that got me into writing music. Good story and focus on characters, plus a steampunk fantasy aesthetic that appeals to everything I adore. My soul for a solid remake that can break away from the shitty iOS assets.
FINAL FANTASY VII - The overrated one that I like less. This one has the same energy to me as LoZ ocarina of time. It was a lot of firsts for the franchise, paving the way into 3D graphics, giving us more diverse casts, and further breaking away from standard fantasy elements. And because of this, it wins the hearts of a lot of fans. I didn’t really care for it but obviously many many others did and do still. There was also a movie I think?
FINAL FANTASY VII CRISIS CORE - Never played personally but have seen a fair bit. Gets a mention for its popularity in the wake of its parent game. [Insert “RIP but I’m different” meme]
FINAL FANTASY VIII - Shitty romance novel. Better yet, a shitty romance novel spread across a million PC disks because nothing in life can be easy. Game had an aesthetic that was too edgy powerful what with Squall’s crop top jacket and pretty boy scar, plus the Empress running around looking like a Padme Amidala cosplay. Too absorbed in that one card came to pursue the story.  Also gunblade?? The most ridiculous thing. Fucking rad but falls apart the instant you think about it for more than six seconds how in the whole ass fuck????
FINAL FANTASY IX - I never played nine and I feel like I should because people I’ve spoken to say its pretty good. Zidane has a tail like goku and there was a black mage there also that people seem to like.
FINAL FANTASY X - A blur of CGI Cut scenes and questionable voice acting. Found myself frustrated by the linearity of the plot line. Also found said plot kind of confusing to untangle in places. Might just be salty cause I’m bad at blitzball... Very anime. Seymore’s battle theme slaps as much as his hair do. Also more furry bait.
FINAL FANTASY X-2 - The meninists or whatever don’t like this one because the protag is a girl. It’s a spin off and I never really played it but they gave Yuna a gun so how bad can it be?
FINAL FANTASY XI - An MMO. I feel no need to continue. Never really played it or looked into it, so can’t give a strong vibe.
FINAL FANTASY XII - Baa Baa Black Sheep have you any actually kind of compelling plot set in a deep and well fleshed out world? Strays from the mold a bit too much in places but was still a pretty solid game.
FINAL FANTASY TACTICS - Another spin off and one that I’ve never played. Takes place in the same world as FF12 and gets a mention here because I’m always a fan of the world building done for Ivalice.
FINAL FANTASY XIII - This is where I started to fall out of the franchise a bit. I never played this one but The battle theme was good and that one guy looks like he probably listens to 21 pilots a lot. iirc there was some nonsense going on on the moon? So I’m gonna call it a sleeker, sexier clone of FF4.
FINAL FANTASY XIV - Another MMO. I actually did play this briefly right when it first came out. If you recall the time when it was apparently so bad that SquareEnix had to take it back and try again? Seems like most of that’s cleared up now tho. There’s an update soon I think.
FINAL FANTASY XV - I know nothing about this other than that the boys are back in town. Also all the shit mobile spin offs everybody’s getting ads for around here.
DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY - SSB but Final Fantasy. Not the kind of games you play for the plot, but was overall a decent game with interesting mechanics. Was genuinely fun to play. Too bad the latest installment was such a step backward.
FINAL FANTASY CRYSTAL CHRONICLES - Said to have a “Small Cult Following” of which I am a part. This game was good, step to me. The music was amazing, the story was interesting (if poorly paced in a couple of places), and the setting was wonderfully put together. The sequels are... less good with a steady decline per installment, but alas what can one do?

MAMA CAT AND THE LATEST
In Which MamaCat Temporarily Loses Momentum, but has a pretty good story to tell anyway.
Honestly, darlings, did any of you also get this email this week???
“I'm XXXXX XXX-XXX from Beijing Film Academy, A film production company based in Singapore.,I saw your posted on MN FILM TV and after reviewing your profile,i feel excited with your past experiences,Kindly confirm your availability and email your recent resume to([email protected]) so i'll get back to you with the job details.Your prompt response will be highly appreciated. Thanks and God bless.”
Make of it what you will. There really is a Beijing Film Academy but it’s a .edu, not a gmail.com. Just saying.
While Mother puts that research on the back burner, let me mention here that the whole #AllFemale1776In2020 idea is alive and kicking, even though it took a week off when MamaCat lost her elder cat (actual cat). Say hello or join up at www.happycatranchproductions.com and hit us up on the contact page. Don’t worry, we have not yet begun to ask for money.
Since last I wrote, darlings, we have had to bid our Lebowski goodbye, I did not get to start my latest temp job (so back to the interview & outreach phase AGAIN), the dryer broke so we have had to go to the laundromat, and there were some pretty nasty events in the TwitterVerse and the RacismVerse. Also the nastiest week of the hottest month on record, pretty much everywhere. AND THEN THERE’S THE “CATS” TRAILER.
So… yeah… let’s talk about showbiz and self-actualization and how cool it is when cool stuff happens... I’m just going to sit down here and think of beautiful unicorns who exhale love and fart glitter…
I had promised someone recently that I would tell this story: of how all of that traveling back and forth to and from various places, and focusing on what a sweet young Golden Girl can do to break through in her acting career, has begun to lead to some really cool stuff. Quick flashback montage to actual rooms in the actual 80s and things I actually heard: “You’re very funny but you don’t fit your type”; “We can’t cast you the way you are unless you want to go blonde and get a boob job”; “You’re very talented but you won’t work until you’re over 40”; “We just can’t cast flat-chested brunettes”; “You can always come back to the business when you’re older”…
So when I got older and got some theatre work and made some friends in New York City, I began to try to face my dragons and see where I can fit into the business as it exists in the 21st century. One of those dragons is called, A Camera. In younger days, I feared the Camera as some fear the dance studio mirror or monologue auditions. Whole lotta personal issues, cats and kittens. (News Flash: Actor Admits to Personal Issues! First Time in Recorded History! Ghost of Aristophanes Dies Laughing!)
I faced down the Camera Dragon by taking some classes through Actors Launchpad. I figured I’d be the oldest, or in the top 3 oldest, in every class – and I was right! And it was scary! But then in walks Amazing Casting Director, with a half-eaten wrap in one hand and a large nearly-cold half-finished coffee in the other. She greets me, recognizing me from a recent summer stock role, because she had made it her business to look up every one of us online prior to class. So in one movement, she simultaneously made me feel welcome and seen, and also gave me a big fast lesson in professionalism: look people up. Get to know them in advance. Start the relationships off on the right foot by acknowledging humans for who they are.
(I was suddenly REALLY glad that I already had looked her up in advance and gotten to know her work as a CD. See how that works?)
I held off in class as we began to do our on-camera readings. I wanted to see what the younger actors in the room were like, what the actors closer to my own age were like, what Amazing CD’s feedback was like… oh, BS. MamaCat was scared AF! I sat there watching my colleagues’ work while I was working on all the various breathing & centering exercises for calming oneself in the midst of trying something new with a lot of risk involved. And, as we went along, I thought to myself, I can handle this, I really can.
My scene was pulled from a crime procedural; I was playing some kind of DA or judge or something cool and authoritative like that. I had been studying the actors on Massively Successful Series (casting by Amazing CD), and the really tense, underplayed, authentic work they were doing. It translated perfectly as a guideline for my scene for class. I called upon the spirits of Streep and of Eastwood to guide me. My reading partner was a real talent who gave back as good as he got.
The scene ended. The room was silent. Amazing CD said, “YES, Diana!” The class applauded.
Not every class I took at ALP that first fall went that well, but I learned something every time, and I go back to Actors Launchpad every time I’m in the City. That’s one of the things I’m doing there in Gotham City, instead of the spendy, touristy stuff. And over time, it pays off in so many ways.
Fade out, fade in; Amazing CD has me in to read for an under-five for that Massively Successful Series. Then she has me in to read for Sitcom Pilot. She requests a self-tape here and a self-tape there. Then one day… she reaches out to me for a self-tape audition for an actual speaking role in an honest-to-Josh* feature film that will be shooting on location near me.
AND I BOOK IT.
Oh, the obstacles I had to overcome to get myself on-set for that glorious day. There’s a hilarious chapter about SAG-AFTRA and a lifetime of mistaken thingys. There was a serio-comic chapter about the non-union commercial spot shoot I had to back out of and the reaction that surprised me. It’s worth several more blog posts just telling those.
But here is the point of today’s missive: I faced down the Camera Dragon, learned from the experience, and by improving my skillset and my attitude towards booking work and where I want to go, things began to shift for me. I got my really and truly for realz SAG-AFTRA membership this year, working opposite the actual real-live Tony-Award-winning, Oscar-nominated, Mr. Frank Langella, he of Frost-Nixon and of Dracula, in a one-on-one scene in a real movie that will most likely really come out, and will most likely actually contain that scene.
Working with Frank Langella was like acting with someone you’ve known forever and been partnered with a million times. And now I am One Degree of Kevin Bacon.
There’s your lesson in courage and valor in the face of overwhelming odds, jazz babies and hepcats. You got this. In the words of Commander Peter Quincy Taggart, “Never give up! Never Surrender.”
 Meow, darlings.

Modern AU where Killian is a world famous soccer star who has hit rock bottom and been sentenced to the place where ‘football’ legends go to die – America. While here he crosses paths with Emma, an up and coming musician and film scorer who challenges everything he thought he knew and makes him want more than the game he’s always loved. Will be filled with fluff for days. Rated M.
A/N: Okay my friends. I just want to inform you all before you start reading that this chapter is not my usual happy go lucky fluff. For some of my more soft-hearted readers (you know who you are), I would recommend that you wait to read this until tomorrow when I will post chapter 14. I won’t be offended at all if you wait, and by then the stormier seas will have calmed a bit. For the rest of you, however, I hope you will enjoy this chapter. It’s a really important one for the story and it brings us to a cross roads I have been anticipating since I first came up with this AU. That being said I appreciate you reading and look forward to hearing what you think!
“Okay, so does anyone have any questions about what our next steps are?” Tiana posed the question to a room filled with staff from the show who were all gathered for the weekly update. Before anyone could respond, however, Tiana ran through the final bullet points of the meeting they’d just had. “We’ve got the writers working on crafting episodes seven and eight now, filming of five ends today and six starts tomorrow in Burbank, and three and four are finishing in post.”
Everyone in the room nodded in agreement, giving Tiana the green light to end the meeting much to Emma’s enjoyment. Not that it wasn’t fun to be a part of a big show like this. So far she’d felt simultaneously challenged and excited at all of the scoring work she got to do to keep pace with a network production, but Emma always did better in one on one or solo settings. Being a part of a larger team and running through the plans had never really been her style. She was a workhorse, but she preferred to focus on her piece of the puzzle and leave the grand designs for showrunners and producers.
“Emma, can I talk to you for a quick sec before you bolt?” Tiana asked, her smile wide as she called Emma out for her more singular tendencies. Emma agreed that she could and waited behind as everyone else filtered out of the conference room.
“What’s up?”
“’What’s up’ is that you are unbelievable, girl! I got the final cuts you sent over last night and it’s amazing. I got chills like five times, and I knew every twist that was coming.”
Emma smiled at the praise, knowing that the magic of sound when added to a base cut was really something. A show or a film was never finished without it, and though it wasn’t the flashiest part of production, Emma knew the music and the score could pack just as much punch if done right as any dramatic acting or cinematography.
“Oh good, so this isn’t one of those ‘you’re fired’ kind of meetings then?” Emma joked.
“Hardly,” Tiana said with a genuine laugh as she shook her head. “You’re the real deal, Emma, and I’m not the only one who thinks so. I sent your stuff up to the network execs and they’re thrilled. They’re convinced we have a hit on our hands and you helped make that possible.”
“Just doing my part,” Emma said honestly.
“Well either way you’ve made some powerful people very happy, especially since there’s a new potential producer that wants in. A very wealthy producer.”
Emma’s eyes widened at the statement. It wasn’t unusual from Emma’s understanding for producers to join as shows were still on the air, but to add someone with money this early when the pilot hadn’t so much as premiered was a big deal. Though Emma hadn’t worked much in TV before, she knew that shows were seen as a big risk in their first few seasons. There were a lot of factors that could make or break a new series, and at the end of the day the most important thing was ratings. To survive, a show needed to resonate with a lot of people, millions of people, and that wasn’t so easy these days.
“Congrats, Tiana. That’s awesome. I know how hard you’ve worked on this, and you deserve every success.”
“Thanks Emma. So that being said… I was hoping I could ask for a favor.”
“Name it,” Emma said, willing to do whatever she could to help out her friend and boss.
“The potential partner is in town just for today and he’s coming to check out the production side of things. He’s going to see a bit of the set and meet some of the actors but he’s also interested in post, specifically the music. Turns out he’s heard of you and he was hoping to get a look at your process.”
Emma hadn’t expected anything like this and to be honest she was surprised. Despite all of the interest that she’d garnered after the Oscars, Emma still felt strange about being noticed, and the actual craft of scoring was always a relatively personal thing. She collaborated of course, working with other musicians and sound designers, and reporting to directors and show runners like Tiana, but to have an outsider in her space was a very different thing. For some reason it made her a little uneasy, but rationally she knew that was silly. She should just take the compliment and live up to her promise to Tiana. This would be fine, just a few minutes spent schmoozing with a potential investor, and then she could go on her merry way.
“I know, I know, it’s kind of weird and intrusive. I wouldn’t ask if I could see a way around it, Emma, but he seems really interested and…”
“And in this business money talks,” Emma said, prompting a knowing nod from Tiana.
“Exactly. I mean technically we don’t need the money, but it just never hurts, even if we know we just have it for a rainy day.”
The rationale Tiana offered was something Emma understood well. It fit in with the facts of Tiana’s backstory that Emma already knew. Coming form a working class family and losing her Dad early in life, Tiana was used to living in the real world where having things was not a given. She might have had some advantages over Emma, being raised by her mother and her grandmother, but that same underlying pull to try and create a comfort that she never had was there.  Money was something that granted access and possibility, but it had to be worked for and protected. Emma knew that first hand, and she knew the drive to collect and save what she could just in case something went wrong. For that reason she could let go of her misgivings and do this for the show and for Tiana.
“I understand,” Emma said. “Just send him down whenever you’re ready. I’ll be around most of the afternoon.”
“Fantastic!” Tiana said with a clap of her hands. “I owe you, Emma.”
With the conversation now finished, Tiana took her leave, no doubt to play superwoman and handle every possible crisis or flare up that would crop up through the day. Emma, meanwhile, headed to the studio, deciding it was best to continue on like it was a normal day instead of focusing on a potential visitor. She situated herself in the booth and got to work.
Having just finished the final touches on an episode the night before, Emma now had a whole episode to create for. It was a real blank slate to start fresh on, and there were completely different themes needed for the final cut. She needed a few pieces for Ruby and her costar – the heroes of the hour and the side of good that the audience should root for. Some of those themes she had already made, and she’d only have to rework them a little from previous episodes, but others required she start completely from scratch. Emma needed emotion packed pieces for the episode’s twist and one for the sad state that the victims were in at the beginning before Ruby and her partner stepped in to save the day. But in the end Emma decided to go for a darker, more sinister piece today.
In every episode of the show there was always some kind of villain, the person (or creature) that committed the crime or was causing the chaos that the heroes had to fix. Usually that was a harder mindset for Emma to get into, and for the past few episodes she’d left that piece almost for the end, but after last night’s fiasco at dinner and the run in with that terrible Gold fellow, Emma was feeling strangely inspired. It wasn’t difficult to channel the emotions needed to depict monstrosity, not when she’d experienced his cold, calculated evil, and been filled in on so much more after dinner.
“Truth be told, Emma, I don’t even know where to begin,” Killian said as they finally entered his apartment and she told him that it was time for them to talk. “The lies that man has told… they’re not something I ever want to touch you.”
“I think it’s too late for that. I know you’re trying to protect me, Killian, but the only way to do that is to tell me the truth.”
“Aye, love. I know. I only wish it wasn’t quite so ugly.”
Ugly or not, Killian confessed everything to her that night. He told her about the life he used to have, which was pretty much on par with what Emma imagined the life of a world-famous soccer player would be. She had hardly imagined he was a monk, and honestly she’d just been glad it wasn’t as bad as it could be. In the scheme of things, the unmoderated drinking and the partying and the fights wasn’t that bad. When she thought about the drugs and the lifestyle of some of the people she’d met here in LA she was relieved. That being said she wasn’t exactly thrilled at the fact that there was a time when he leaned into the bachelor playboy image, and hearing about his liaison with Gold’s ex-wife… well it just didn’t sound like the man she knew now.
“Why did you do it?” Emma asked, genuinely curious as to why he would start something with a man like Gold. Surely Killian had to know it would go terribly, but he’d made the choice anyway. He wasn’t stupid, so there must be a reason.
“Because my life was in shambles, love. I had nothing even thought it seemed that I had everything, and I was too foolish to realize that the dream I’d always had lacked anything like substance. I was tricking myself into believing that I had what I wanted, but everything I had was a lie. It wasn’t real or authentic, and I think deep down I knew that. I was desperate to be checked, to be forced out of the same bloody horrible cycle, and this was just a way to have to face the music.”
Emma thought long and hard about that, and it made sense the more she thought about it. Killian had been scouted when he was still so young, and before that he’d dedicated his whole life to this sport. He had no one in the world except for his brother and the only thing they really seemed to share was soccer. Emma imagined what a dream like that would mean for a young man, and she knew that anyone is his position would be tempted to give in and live the fast life that went with it. She could even understand his reasoning now about subconsciously wanting someone to put a stop to all of it, even if she never would have made those kinds of choices herself.
“Do you regret it?” Emma asked, wanting to hear what she already knew – that he was different now and that he wanted different things than he had in the past.
“No,” Killian replied, surprising her. “I mean yes, I wish I hadn’t made that choice with Milah. It was beyond bad judgment. It was seedy and ugly and it’s spiraled to something I never imagined or ever wanted. But even the worst parts – the complete lack of privacy, the lies, the character assassination – they were worth getting here. I wouldn’t have ever found my way to you without those choices, Emma, and though I’m ashamed at the man I was, I had to make those mistakes to find you and I can never regret that. I can only move forward. I can only try to show you that I’m not really that man. Not anymore.”
For better or worse Emma heard those words and she felt them to be true. She looked at him and the details of his past that weren’t all happy and shiny and hopeful and she accepted them. Killian wasn’t perfect, but Emma knew she couldn’t judge him. Bad choices were something everyone dabbled in at some point or other, and after Killian had told her everything and more, Emma felt like she had room to share some of her own worst moments too.
“I was in juvie,” she blurted out, both because she wanted to alleviate some of the feelings of shame on Killian’s face that had formed since his confessions and because she knew that she wanted him to know every part of her just like she did him. “I was sixteen. I’d run away from another group home and I tried to hotwire a car to get me out of the state.”
“Tried to?” He asked, clearly shocked but not giving off any kind of judgmental vibes as he pushed for details.
“Okay, I did hotwire a car.” Her words made something shift in his gaze and Emma swore he looked impressed. Leave it to Killian to find the best in one of her worst faults. “And I made it a whole ten miles before I got caught.”
“What kind of car was it?” he asked after a thoughtful pause, completely surprising her. Most people asked what happened. They asked what juvie was like or if she regretted her decision, but not many cared about the car. She’d always appreciated that since it was a bit embarrassing.
“This vintage yellow beetle, and by vintage I mean old.”
“You’re kidding.”
“I’m not.”
She’d then proceeded to tell him the rest of the story, about how juvie was the scariest thing she’d ever gone through and how she’d started to really let go of the belief that things would ever be okay. Emma had been alone her whole life, but solitude was better than being there those first few weeks. The culture inside there was tense at best, and she’d felt isolated and afraid all the time. Only when she’d been put into some of the art and music classes had she found any sort of comfort, and the only reason she’d had a fighting chance at a better life thereafter was because her music teacher and her social worker had stayed in touch. They’d seen something in her and they fought for her second chance when Emma didn’t know how. Everything she had now she owed to them, and she didn’t think she’d ever have found her path if she hadn’t made some terrible mistakes.
But even though last night had proved a critical step in their relationship, Emma couldn’t help but resent Gold. His presence in LA might have forced Emma and Killian to be open with everything, but his intention was hardly helpful. He was a cruel man and a vengeful one and Emma could never forgive him for what he’d done to Killian and what he was still doing. Wasn’t it enough that Killian’s reputation had taken such a hit and he’d been forced to leave the team he loved? What kind of person kept kicking someone when they were down?
Someone with an unchecked ego and a whole bunch of crazy, Emma reasoned to herself as she thought it over, and it was that dynamic that made Gold the perfect muse for a villainous figure. He lacked the heart most people had, and his actions undercut the sympathy any one could feel for him. Maybe he’d been wronged, but his vendetta surpassed the bounds of decency and that was a monstrous trait indeed, one Emma hoped she’d never have to deal with face to face again.
“Knock knock,” a voice said, pulling Emma from her music, and as she pulled off her headphones a sudden wave of apprehension hit her. The voice had been muffled by the audio on her feed, but even before she looked her hair stood up on edge. When she turned to find Gold, she was only half surprised even as she recoiled. God this man was creepy, and she definitely did not want to be anywhere near him.
“How did you get in here?” Emma asked, ignoring any kind of pleasantries with a man who deserved no such kindness. “You shouldn’t be here.”
“Now, now, Emma. Is that any way to talk to a new investor?” He said with a wave of his hands and a flash of his teeth that was less a smile and more a snarl.
Emma’s heart sank at the realization that Gold was the potential producer Tiana was scoping out and she knew that despite Tiana’s hopes this was not going to work. She hated to make her new friend choose but if Gold was signing on then she was signing off. That being said, Emma had always prided herself on being able to read people, and she didn’t actually think Gold was here for an investment opportunity. He was here to cause trouble, plain and simple.
“You and I both know you don’t actually give a shit about the show,” Emma said, wanting him to give himself away without her asking him flat out.
“Oh Miss Swan, how you wound me. You really think I’d stoop to such a low? You think I’d come all this way for nothing?”
His voice dripped with sarcasm, making the strange tone it had grind upon her ears even more. It was almost sing-songy and Emma wondered if and how he got away with these theatrics in the real world. Apparently money bought a lot of freedoms the rest of the world didn’t benefit from. After all, she couldn’t be the only one who thought he was so over the top. It was clear as day and frankly undeniable.
“I think you came here to mess with Killian, and it’s not going to work.”
“You say that now, but that’s only because you don’t know -,”
“I know,” Emma cut in, interrupting whatever crazy rant he was about to go on. “I know what Killian started with you. I know the choices he made.”
Gold grinned at this, seeming to take a sick satisfaction in the fact that he had forced Killian to reveal himself. Emma wasn’t swayed by his reaction in anyway though. In fact, she just felt more hostility and more need to defend Killian and assure Gold he hadn’t hurt them in the slightest.
“I also know that you’re insecurity is what’s brought you here. You’re fighting a war over what, your hurt pride? If you ask me that’s the sign of a very insecure kind of man.”
“Well no one asked you, did they?” he snapped, his attitude shifting from the weird playfulness to full on threat. Her blood ran cold as she saw the malice that crossed his expression, but just as soon as it was there it was gone. Jesus, this guy was a full on sociopath. “Besides, it doesn’t matter what you say, dearie. My battle with Jones ends when I say it does.”
“What else is left?” Emma asked. “You’ve already taken so much -,”
“I have,” Gold sneered, interrupting her. “I thought I’d taken everything, in fact. But then low and behold you arrive and now it’s like he’s won. I can’t have that, Miss Swan. Surely you must see that.”
“So you what? Thought you’d get on this show and threaten me.”
“It crossed my mind a time or two,” Gold said brightly. “But you strike me as the kind of woman who is burdened with integrity. My guess, having met you, is that you’d play the martyr. You would leave this job and any other before you hurt him.”
Emma stayed silent even though what Gold said was true. She didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of knowing he was right, but Emma knew that this job wasn’t worth more than what she had with Killian. Music would be her passion no matter what, and as for the rest of it, she’d figure it out. She’d always figured it out before.
“That’s why I’ve decided to change my strategy. You can relax, dearie. I won’t be signing on for the show. You’re little dreams are safe from me. But Killian’s…”
“What about Killian’s?” Emma asked defiantly. “You can’t get to him. He’s protected now. He’s signed on with Regina and they have an agreement.”
“They do,” Gold said. “And at one time she was a valuable ally, but the tides have changed.”
“What did you do?”
“I did what I do best, Miss Swan. I found the person I needed, then I found their greatest weakness, and from that weakness I struck a deal. This deal just so happens to be with the president of the European Soccer League.”
The sense of foreboding Emma got from this weighed heavily on her. She had a thing about lying – she knew when someone was being honest, and Gold had all the power here. Whatever weapon he had found he was being honest about it, and Emma knew exactly what he had planned without his even having to say it. He still did of course, because he was terrible, and as the words washed over her Emma only felt worse and worse.
“You see, in exchange for some discretion about the… less than savory parts of his life, he’s made me a promise – that Killian Jones will never play in Europe again without my say so. He’ll never play in any respectable league without my go ahead, and he will never get that, dearie… unless.”
“Unless?” Emma asked, her heart pounding in her ears as her palms grew sweaty and her eyes threatened to form tears. She fought them though, unwilling to show weakness to such a man.
“Unless you end things with him. Now.”
And there it was, the ultimatum. Either Emma would give Killian up or she would take away the biggest part of his world. Killian loved soccer, and for all Emma knew he had every intention of doing his time here before going back. Everyone talked about how he deserved that chance, how the league here wasn’t challenging enough for him, and how the world deserved to see him on a stage befitting his skill. But in giving him up Emma would be giving up so much of herself, because she loved him – she loved him in that big, huge, once in a lifetime kind of way, and she didn’t think she’d ever get over him no matter what other dreams may come her way.
“I know this is a lot to process, Miss Swan, you seem very taken with Jones for whatever reason. I realize you’ll likely have to think about it. But I will warn you my offer is not without limits. You have twenty four hours to make your choice and in the meantime there will be no contact. No calls, no visits. If you speak to Jones the offer is void. I want you to cut him off completely. It’s the only way I’ll consider the score even.”
The numbness Emma felt at taking all of this in was debilitating. She was so angry and so hurt at the same time. There was so much emotion swirling around inside of her that she was paralyzed from it. She couldn’t speak. She couldn’t think. She felt trapped and suffocated all at once. It was excruciating, and Gold loved every second of it. He even had the balls to laugh at her pain and at the horrible choice he’d given her.
“I’ll take your stunned silence as a sign that you understand me, and that I should go.” With that he grabbed his things and made to head out. But before he left he turned back once more offering one last cruelly gleeful grin. “Good-bye, Emma. I hope you make the right choice.”
Emma couldn’t say exactly how long she stood there when Gold was gone. It could have been seconds, or an hour or more. Honestly, she was reeling from the interaction, caught up in a daze that she just couldn’t seem to shake. She was stuck in limbo, unsure of where to go, but eventually something did pull her from the mire of her thoughts: the familiar ding of a text message sounding from her phone. She reached for it quickly, hoping it would be Ruby or Mary Margaret. Someone who could help – someone she could trust, but instead it was exactly the person she wasn’t supposed to see.
K: Missing you like crazy today. We still on for tonight?
Her finger hovered over the reply bar for a while. One heartbeat. Two heartbeats. Three. Four. Five. But the more that came the harder it was to think. She just didn’t know which way to go. Her heart was dying to say yes and to tell him she loved him. She wanted to run to Killian, to tell him the truth, and to find a way to fight this together. But she hesitated, wondering if that was love or if it was selfishness. Was she making that choice for them, or would she be doing it for herself because she loved him and couldn’t picture a life without him?
Emma didn’t know the answer to that question, and Gold said reaching out in any way would make the choice. Once she replied the damage would be done, and so she didn’t, instead shutting off her phone and slipping it into her bag with the rest of her things. She didn’t know where she was going, but Emma knew she had to leave. She had to run, and right now she didn’t where she was going, only that she had to go.
Post-Note: To those of you brave enough to ignore my warning and read this I hope you aren’t too angry with me. I did warn you after all, so you kind of knew what you were in for. That being said I PROMISE I am going to fix this for Emma and Killian and I am going to fix it next chapter, which as I have said, will be posted tomorrow night. I really hated to make it a cliff hanger at all, but the chapter was already a lot longer than my normal one so the cut off had to be made. Don’t worry though. I will make the next chapter longer too to make up for it. Anyway, thank you all so much for reading and I hope you have a good rest of your night!

Yay!! Hellloooooo love ♡♡♡
1. Where do I typically get my ideas.
It’s the one thing I don’t struggle with at all: ideas. I have them. I may not always know how to all fit them it place, but I do have ideas, and love to share them. They come from anywhere really; discussions, classes, movies that excited me OR annoyed me and made me rumminate my thoughts on its what-ifs… Like, if I take Yugen for an example it obviously was playing with the theme of “what was missing in canon that I want to add, and what do I want to keep.” So I started chucking everything I found either problematic OR so perfect I couldn’t really add to it, and then I still had room to play with every headcanon I ever had or assimilated via fandom. Second in came the current political climate. I wrote a story where the world is being saved from hate itself - so I was allowed to factor in what I found is going horribly in the world as of now. It made writing it more impactful to myself. Then the details; what are they doing, what are they talking about - this draws heavily from my own experience. And while it is VERY important me that I don’t write “myself” but stay in character, it’s always easy to imagine what they would do in my place, and branch off from there. So, anything gets recycled that I experience, I mostly even don’t notice it - I read a LOT, daily. Anything from the daily online newspaper fix and other fanfiction to science fiction and lots and lots of non-fiction. I go through books like other people go through… I don’t even know. My apartment is a library. I have custom made selfmade shelfs to fit them all, even when I DO throw stuff out regularly that wasn’t a 100% to my taste. And added to that - I WATCH a lot. Mostly series that I watch together with my husband, and documentaries on anything cool. Add to that my experiences as a regular jane and a rather specific education, and I can honestly say that some or most of my ideas are probably a jumbled mess of inspiration drawn from any of these outlets without me even really realising it.
Most important, though: I KEEP all my ideas. I write lists on my phone memo pad, and if they come up elsewhere on the internet as I talk to people and bounce ideas around (brainstorming or simply being asked specifics about my plot is also SO helpful to me personally, especially to fit all my ideas into the right places), for instance, I will make screenshots. And if I talk to friends and colleagues I am known to whip out my phone as well- people are never offended when I tell them I need a minute to write down what we just talked about cause it’s so impactful to me that I don’t want to forget about it. Ideas are fleeting, and however we think we will definitely remember this stroke of genius (however idiotic it turns out to be in the end), it’ll definitely be gone if I don’t preserve it.
Now, what I’m definitely lacking tho is the TIME to put all these ideas into action. I currently have a “master-list” of fic ideas where I collect a sort of database for ideas for fics. Some of those are little more than prompts, others have 20 page scripts already. It currently spans 22 fic ideas, and most of these will most likely never see the light of day. I simply don’t have that kind of time and sadly I do need to go and earn a living, lol.
19. What’s my best advice for writing action scenes.
Again with the word “advice” - I don’t feel like this is an area where anyone can or should give “advice” - writing is highly individual, and what works for me doesn’t neccessarily have to work for anyone else. So, again, here’s simply my personal opinion and experience on what worked out for me.
Action scenes are maybe THE most difficult thing to write imo. Especially in an overall romance genre where people are here for the relationships and characters and not so much for the action. Which means, for me, that the action scenes need to be on point, and not too long, but even more impactful. So, these are steps I follow in my head, more or less consciously.
1) Cinematographic imagery. I like to go at these scenes from a ‘what would this LOOK LIKE" angle. These are superheroes, so, I go big. Energy pulses that push them soaring through skies, shattering glass, cement and asphalt breaking apart, buildings tumbling. Especially with using Rei, I tend to go big on the fire descriptions. The fire needs to cackle and crack and lick, objects she sets it to go ablaze, she can fire it like wildfire and occationally things explode. Which brings me to point two.
2. The stakes are high, the effects are big, so it wouldn’t be realistic if there weren’t injuries and casualties involved. I’m very much against glorifying violence, so it’s very important to me to also point out the costs. And those costs tend to be very graphic in my writing. Huge bloody gashes, skin sizzling away under acid, bone showing through burned and mangled skin. Which is why, when I use a big and giant epic battle scene, the aftermath will always be painful and bloody. Who turns to violence pays a price, even if it wasn’t their choice and it was always in defence. So any huge battle will always include injuries on ALL the parties. And they stick around in their healing phases in follow up scenes if they were gigantic. Even if it’s just in flinches and a hissed breath through clenched teeth as they have to move around the healing residues of it. Though luckily, Manga!Mamoru has healing powers, of course. (Tho I try use that sparsely, of course. The guy is no god. He has his limits.)
3. I tend to use a very fast paced language in action scenes. Short sentences. TRYING to refrain from my kilometer long, relative clause heavy comma sentences. Action scenes are a very reactive, sudden thing. Things happen fast and they need to react fast. No time to think or plan and just to act, and the language should reflect that. Both the aspect that describes what is actually happening and the emotive reactions to it. Which brings me to point four.
4. They are fucking scared. Even if they manage to swallow that fear and let instinct take over to go badass, underneath, I try to never forget that these are teenagers fighting monsters, risking their lifes. There will be adrenaline, and panic, and no room for very much rational thought. It all happens too fast and they are going on fight or flight auto-pilot. And this will at least partly be the case however routine or everyday the encounter has become. There will always be that moment where they could have misstepped and died a bloody death in someone’s fangs or tentacles.
Brings me to five:5. Creative monsters. In Ikigai especially I tried to write monsters that I find interresting. I used pop-culture references by using Godzilla and Mothra-like enemies, monsters from Video-games, and sometimes some from canon that I found especially interresting to tie back to canon. By using monsters that I liked, I knew what they could do. And I had fun while writing it.
6. I choose fighting styles. Usagi gets Jujutsu from me, sometimes even Aikido elements. A fighting style that uses speed instead of strength, that needs to be clever to use their opponent’s strength against them. And then I watch Youtube tutorials on these styles’ basic moves. Plus, these tutorial instructions come with very useful vocabulary for how to implement these moves into writing! And then sometimes, like in Yugen, I move from combat to magic. I had a very fun time turning those twirly 90s dance sequences into powerful fighting in Yugen. Making something so obviously “girly” the biggest asset in a battle, the biggest weapon, more powerful than any martial arts move I could give them. Girl power and all.
And, last,7. I get myself in the mood. I listen to very fast paced dramatic, epic music. Mostly the score from action movies even (like, I find the wonder woman theme song from the new films to work like MAGIC) and imagine my fast paced action sequences to it. Go through them in my head one by one. And then put that song on repeat as I write. It helps me write clipped and fast-paced, and keeps me in the dramatic tone.
So there, three cents on action ♡ Would be curious to know what YOU think works best!

Magnus Chase and the Obligatory Hogwarts AU Ch16
Yes, we're here! I've been waiting forward to this part since I started this story. So, with no further ado, I present to you the Triwizard Tournament!
The rest of their sixth year had gone by relatively well. Halfborn managed to get the N.E.W.T.S he needed to get into the Wizarding University he needed, as did Percy and Annabeth. They threw a big party to celebrate it before the two Americans had to fly back and let’s just say Halfborn took full advantage of the fact he could legally drink.
Sam had been doing research on how she could get permission to bring Amir to the Triwizard Tournament for the best part of the second semester. She hadn’t yet told Amir since she didn’t want to get his hopes up for nothing but Alex promised her that they could just sneak him in if they didn’t get permission. Apparently the plan included fake mustaches and a bad accent.
And speaking of Alex, her relationship with Magnus had been… weird. They were still friends, sure, and you wouldn’t notice something was wrong even if you knew both of them well. They hang out and joked together and spent entire nights awake binge-watching something from Netflix, but there were always those moments when they remembered of the crush they had – still had - on the other and had to remind themselves nothing would come of it and they should just move on already.
At times, they would get their hopes up for a moment. Holding eye-contact for a moment too long, hands brushing a bit too much, a joking ‘I love you’ and then squashing that hope down again. Friends do those things too, it doesn’t mean anything, they thought to themselves.
Summer went by in a flash, or maybe it just seemed like that to them. They met in front of King’s Cross and sat together in a compartment, telling each other what they did during summer. Being back on the Hogwarts Express felt different this time. Maybe it was because the last time they were in one of its compartments they were squeezed tightly next to each other in order to fit eight people inside whereas now they were only five. Or maybe it was because they knew this was going to be the last time they got to ride the Hogwarts Express at the start of the school year.  They were seventh years now- by next autumn they will have graduated.
“It feels weird to think this is the last time, huh?” T.J said at one point. “By next year we’ll be officially adults.”
“Now you made me feel old,” Alex said sheepishly, but no one missed the melancholy tone in her voice. None of them other than Magnus knew all the details, but it didn’t take much to understand Alex’s time at Hogwarts were the happiest years of her life so far. Hogwarts had been her home for four years and the first place where she ever felt like she was accepted. It honestly scared her to think she would never come back after this year. I suppose this is what normal kids feel like when they have to move out of their parents’ house for the first time.
“I don’t feel like an adult,” Magnus said. “I can hardly grow a beard or drive and I have no clue what I’m supposed to do with my life.”
Everybody but Sam – who knew for years she wanted to be a pilot- nodded in an ‘I feel you’ kind of way.
“You tell me,” Mallory sighed. “Halfborn had been talking to me about different universities and courses and whatnot he was interested in for years and I was just like ‘I guess I want to finish school?’”
“Yeah, for all our jokes about how he’s an actual Viking, Halfborn has his life together better than any of us, save for Sam,” T.J said.
“I don’t have my life together that well,” Sam said, more because of embarrassment for being left out of the conversation than anything else. And it was true! Like, yesterday she had stayed up later than she was supposed to and she didn’t know a thing about cooking (ironic considering Amir’s family owned a restaurant).
Sam was met with ‘are you shitting me’ looks by every one of their friends. “Sam,” Alex said slowly, “you are already engaged with a boy you’ve been in love with for years and you’ve already applied for a bunch of piloting schools. You’ll probably be accepted by all of them, to be honest.”
Sam said nothing because Alex was right (although she doubted they would all accept her. At least one would turn her down due to her religion despite her great qualifications.)
“Okay, enough with worrying about our future, guys!” Mallory said, standing up from her seat. “This is our last year! Let’s make sure we enjoy it! We’ll go out with a bang!”
The redhead threw her arms in the air and her friends were quick to follow. Alex run out of the compartment quickly and came back with arms filled with chocolate frogs and a bunch of other sweets. The group hollered and hooted and soon candy wrappers littered the floor as they sang horrible Top 40s songs (and musicals because Percy and Alex had bonded over their shared love for Hamilton and other musicals, which meant that Alex was singing ‘Big Fun’ from ‘Heathers’ at the top of her lungs).
They arrived at Hogwarts after T.J and Alex (with some helps from the others) had managed to sing though the entire first act of “In the Heights” (and wow, Magnus never knew he found Alex speaking Spanish hot, but damn).
The opening feast went on like always for the most part. And ‘for the most part’ because Headmaster Odin announced that the Triwizard tournament would take place in their school this year. The student went crazy over the announcement, obviously, especially those over 17 who could try out their luck and see if they would be chosen as Champion.
And so that was the standart topic of conversation for the first weeks of school. ‘Which house will the Champion be from?’, ‘Who do you think will be Champion?’ and ‘Who will you take to the Yule Ball?’ were the most common questions between students and eve some teachers asked them (read: Professor Jack).
And so the time passed by and October finally arrived. The 30th came and the students were unable to think of anything but the arrival of the two schools that evening. It became almost unbearable for the teachers, the constant murmur in the back of their classes. Some completely gave up on teaching and just talked with their students (again, Professor Jack, who told them about the beautiful French woman he dated once and the handsome Bulgarian man he charmed with his talents).
The moment the afternoon classes were over the students sprinted down to the Big Lake to watch the two other schools arrive. The students’ excited talking created a cacophony that sounded like constant buzzing. The younger students were the ones more excited, or more obviously excited. The seventh years might not be bouncing up and down and squealing, but they wanted to.
“Hey, look!” a tiny first year yelled, pointing up at the sky. Everybody turned to look where she was pointing to see a pastel blue carriage being dragged across the sky. As the carriage got closer and closer it got bigger and bigger and what at first looked like a typical carriage ended up being as a two-deck bus on steroids. The students quickly moved aside to make room for the vehicle to land.
As the carriage landed and the winged horses that pulled it along came to a halt, Alex turned to Magnus. “It must be really hard to find parking space for that thing.” The joke was so random it made Magnus crack up, despite effectively ruing the otherwise magical moment.
As the doors of the blue carriage opened, a tall, elegant man walked out with robes as blue as sapphires and gray streaks of hair at his temples. He was followed by a rather big group of students, all dressed in blue. The boys looked like they could all easily get the role of the pretty boy in a bad high school chick flick, wearing a sky blue blazer with details in darker blue and perfectly ironed blue pants. The girls could have easily passed as Veelas, moving gracefully in a way that made you wonder whether they actually had Veela blood. They wore the same blazers as the boys with a blue skirt that reached their knees and fluttered with their every step.
The students were arranged by year, the first years at the back and the seventh years at the front. A boy walked near the front, shoulders pushed back and head held high proudly. The light color of his uniform made his dark skin stand out and black curls peaked out from under his hat.
“There’s so much blue I think I’ll throw up,” Magnus whispered at Alex. He honestly felt a bit nauseous at seeing so much of the color, no matter how attractive the students were.
“I’m more concerned about those ridiculous hats,” Alex whispered back. “Who thought those things were a good idea?”
“The same guy who thought we should have big black pointy hats,” T.J piped in.
The tall man, the headmaster of the school apparently, walked up to Odin and the two men shook hands.
“Gilbert, it’s good to see you,” the Hogwarts headmaster said with a smile, pronouncing Gilbert like Jill-bare.
“Likewise, mon ami.” The man- Gilbert- spoke in a soft, mellow tone that made Alex think he’d be great at telling kids bedtime stories. “Has Durmstrang arrived yet?” Gilbert’s accent was almost unnoticeable, except for when a word had an ‘r’ in it.
“They should show up any minute-“ The Headmaster was cut off by an explosion of water from the Big Lake. A large ship burst out of the water, spraying the watching students with water. The ship looked like what you would imagine a pirate ship like, made entirely of wood, with large masts and billowing sails that looked completely dry despite being just underwater. The figurehead at the prow of the large vessel was a sculptured dragon, its large wings plastered over the sides of the ship’s hull and its eyes two gleaming red rubies.
The ship pulled closer to the shore and a wooden bridge was lowered. The first to exit was a tall woman with broad shoulders and almost white blonde hair pulled back in a tight bun. Her eyes were gray and sharp like a blade and there were deep lines around them. The students of Hogwarts were instantly met with the realization that she was one of those teachers that you don’t want to piss off or you’ll be damned to hell.
Alex stared at the woman with large, shocked eyes. Of course she would be here! He scolded himself for not figuring this out sooner and his blood run cold in his veins as he realized something else. Oh, please don’t let her be here, please don’t let her be here.
“Alex?” Magnus asked, concern lacing his voice. His hand hovered in the air next to him, hesitant if he should touch Alex’s shoulder or not. “Are you alright?”
“Yeah, yeah I’m-“
The ‘I’m fine’ Alex would have said got cut in his throat as his eyes fell on a tall girl with auburn hair. She held her chin up high and as the students of Durmstrang got off the boat she looked at everyone with an expression as if she was above all of them. Her blood red robes made her white skin seem almost translucent. Her legs, strong from Quidditch, where clad the isothermal leggings that were part of the Durmstrang girl uniform. The fur coat hanging off her shoulder looked like the skin of a bear and Alex had no doubt in his mind she could easily kill a bear.
“Alex?” Magnus followed Alex’s eyes to the Durmstrang girl. He didn’t understand why confident Alex was left looking at the girl with frightened eyes until he remembered what Alex hat told him back in the Room of Requirement last year. “Is she…?”
Alex clearly understood what Magnus was asking because he nodded. “Y-Yeah.”
Anger flared up in the Hufflepuff and he got some very un-Hufflepuff like thoughts regarding that girl.
“Alex, are you alright?” Mallory asked concerned, laying a hand on her roommate’s shoulder.
“Who’s that girl?” Sam asked, having noticed the way with which Alex was staring at the girl.
“She’s a cow that hurt Alex,” Magnus said simply, voice as cold as the weather back at Durmstrang.
The rest of their group didn’t seem to need any more information because they were instantly glaring daggers at the back of the Durmstrang girl.
The Durmstrang students walked behind their Headmistress as she came to meet Odin.
“Odin, Gilbert, it’s a pleasure to see you again,” she said as they shook hands, her accent heavy when she spoke.
“Same here, dear Sonia,” Gilbert said as he kissed her cheeks in greeting.
The auburn haired girl was scanning the crowds of Hogwarts and Beauxbatons students with eyes like a hawk. She gave off the impression she was sure she would get picked for Champion and was searching the crowd of students for her competition. As her eyes flew over the students she suddenly froze when she saw a certain green haired Slytherin. For a moment, she looked just as surprised Alex, then her astonishment was wiped away by a wicked smile that spread across her face.
“Hello,” she mouthed at Alex and waved at him, her fingers wiggling.
A soft gasp was heard from Alex and Sam was quick to step in front of her brother and glare at the girl along with T.J. Mallory flicked a peace sign at the girl, which didn’t mean something as innocent as that for the Irish. Magnus flashed her a similar rude expression with absolutely no regret.
“Let’s kill her,” T.J said. The others nodded and kept glaring at the girl’s back.
“I know where we can hide the body,” Mallory said.
A nice, warm ball of feelings rose in Alex’s chest when he saw his friends try and defend him like that. Maybe he should be more concerned his friends were prepared to commit murder and kill a girl then didn’t even know the name of, but after seeing Helga again so suddenly it made him feel safe.
The three schools were lead inside the Hall of the Slain for dinner. The small tables that littered the room where students from all different houses could sit were now removed. In their place were the long House tables from the entrance feast along with two extra tables, one for each of the visiting schools. The group of friends had to split up despite how much they didn’t want to.
“If she tries anything, give me a signal and I’ll shower her in gravy and chicken bones,” T.J told Alex right before he went to sit at the Ravenclaw table. The unusual response managed to put a small smile on Alex’s face.
Magnus felt bad leaving Alex alone after that girl that had hurt him so much arrived and obviously recognized Alex, even though a part of him knew Alex could easily give her hell. Still, he couldn’t help but worry, though Sam and Mallory standing by Alex’s sides like his own personal body guards helped him calm down.
Once everyone was seated in their tables and the chatter in the Hall had calmed down, Headmaster Odin stood up.
“I believe I’m talking for all students in Hogwarts when I say we are all very happy to have the students and Headmasters of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and Durmstrang Institute here with us tonight.”
We could do with one less student, Magnus couldn’t help at thinking, eyeing the Durmstrang girl with undisguised dislike.
“As you all know very well, our fellow magical schools that are grassing us with their presence today,” Magnus huffed and rolled his eyes, glaring at the girl again, “are here because of the Triwizard Tournament, which our school will host this year.”
“Now, I’m sure you’re all very curious as to who will be the Champions that will represent each school,” Headmaster Odin continued. “Those wishing to bring honor to their school and represent it as a Champion must be seventeen or older. Anyone younger will not be permited to enter their name.”
Headmaster Gilbert stood up and continued from where Headmaster Odin had left off. “Those of age wishing to enter as Champion must write their name and their school clearly on a piece of parchment.”
Headmistress Sonia stood up and picked up from where her fellow wizard left off. “The potential Champions will have from the end of tonight’s dinner until the start of tomorrow’s feast to enter their name in the Goblet of Fire.”
As if on cue, a large chest that had been placed in front of the teacher’s table burst open. Blue flames erupted from inside, making every students in the Hall gasp in surprise. Once the flames calmed down, a beautifully sculptured goblet was seen hovering of the chest. Covered in gold, only the students sitting the closest to the teacher’s table were able to make out the scenes depicted on it. The valuable stones set about an inch under it lid gleamed in the lights of the Hall. Flames burned inside it, the bright fire dancing dazzlingly.
The entire Hall applauded loudly, amazed by the sight they just witnessed. Dinner was served once the students finally calmed down. Food from each different country served. Throughout the entire dinner students were asking each other if they would enter their names in the Goblet of Fire or who they thought would be picked.
///////////////
Magnus, Alex, T.J, Mallory and Sam were huddled together near the entrance of the Hall of the Slain. They had arranged to meet there before breakfast to enter their names.
“So who will go first?” Mallory asked, holding her own piece of parchment between her fingers.
“Can I?” T.J asked enthusiastically. Given his love for Quidditch, he had been hyped about the Triwizard tournament since the get go. He was a hundred percent ready to support whoever the Hogwarts Champion was, even if it wasn’t him.
“Go ahead.”
T.J walked to the Goblet of Fire confidently and let his parchment fall in the fire. The fire spiked up, turning momentarily blue before changing back to its warm orange.
One by one, they all put their names in the Goblet. Magnus felt self-conscious as he put in his. He knew very well there was no chance he’d be chosen and being seen entering his name by all these people made him feel awkward, even though he knew everyone over seventeen would be entering as well and only three of them would be chosen from all schools.
All of his friends seemed like better options than him, though if he had to bet on whom, his money would either go to Sam or Alex. Those siblings could kick some serious ass.
The flames were blue again as Alex was entering her name when that girl showed up. She was no longer wearing her fur coat but her heavy boots clicked against the stone hallway.
“Well, if it isn’t Alexander. How nice seeing you here, how are you?” The girl’s accent wasn’t nearly as thick as the one of her Headmistress but it was still very obviously there. Despite her words being kind, there was a very obvious tone in her voice that let anyone within earshot understand she meant them in the least kind way possible. She might as well have said “How are you? I hope you’re dying”.
Alex went pale when she saw the girl standing behind her, hips cocked to the side and a smug expression of her face. “Go away, Helga,” Alex said sharply and tried to leave. She had absolutely no interest in talking to Helga again – she’d left her behind when she left Durmstrang and her parents’ house and had made a happier life for herself at Hogwarts. Helga had no right coming back in her life and messing things up.
“My, is that how you speak to your old best friend?” Helga spoke in a mock hurt voice, pouting at Alex like she hadn’t made her last months in Durmstrang hell on earth. She dropped the innocent tone when she went on talking. “Now I can see why you never had any friends at school. It surprises me you have any here. Well,” she laughed, a sound that should have sounded nice but instead sounded like nails scratching a chalkboard, “it surprises me that you are even here. I was expecting to see you in some freakshow, not Hogwarts of all places.”
Alex felt herself get angrier and angrier. Her fingers and her joints were tingling with energy and she wanted nothing else but to punch Helga in the face and break her pretty little nose. She took a deep breath through her nose and willed herself to calm down. Helga wanted her to react and she wouldn’t give her the joy of knowing she got under her skin. “I told you to go away. I don’t want to talk to you.”
“Aw, don’t be like that. I just wanted to enter as Champion and see the competition.” Alex clenched her fists, trying not to do something she would regret. That stupid cow has the nerve to act like she’s the victim here. “But,” Helga kept going, “if all Hogwarts has to offer is people like you and terrorists, I’m pretty sure it’ll be an easy win for me.”
Gasps were heard and Sam went pale. If Alex was mad before she was furious now. How dare she talk like that about Sam? Sam, who had treated her like family and made her realize the word could mean something other than pain, Sam who was brave and selfless and ambitious and an absolute queen. Helga wasn’t good enough to clean the mud off Sam’s shoes. Your problem’s with me bitch, leave Sam out of it.
“What makes you think you’ll even be Champion?” Alex snapped at Helga, her voice as sharp as a knife.
Helga laughed. “You and I both know I’m one of the best students in Durmstrang and the Quidditch team’s best player. Who do you think would be Champion?”
“Hopefully not Bitch MacBitchson,” Magnus snarled under his breath. Or it was supposed to be under his breath but he said it loudly and everybody heard him. Including the bitch in question, who stared at him with the most offended expression Magnus had ever seen.
She quickly composed herself before speaking, her attention now a hundred percent on Magnus. “And who are you?”
“I’m Magnus Chase,” he said confidently. He was so angry at this girl for what she had done to Alex and how she was talking to her and his friends right now that he didn’t pay any attention to the fact there were students gathered around them watching what was happening. “I’m Alex’s friend and if you’re really that confident you’ll be Champion then just put your bloody name in the Goblet and leave because I think seeing a Troll in person is scaring some of the younger students.”
As per teenage fashion, the crowd of students broke out into a loud chorus of “Ohhhhh!” Helga was red in the face, obviously furious. Magnus felt so proud of himself as he watched her walk up to the Goblet with her nose held high, ignoring the cacophony the students were creating. She dropped her name in the fire and turned around, walking straight into Alex and knocking her off her feet as she made her way to the Hall of the Slain.
“I’ll see you and your little friends later, Alexander,” she said to Alex over her shoulder, a smirk on her lips.
A hand was offered to Alex. “Are you okay?” the person asked in a distinctively French accent and Alex recognized him as the tall boy from Beauxbatons with the crazy curls (he wasn’t wearing the stupid hat any more, thank goodness).
“Yeah, yeah. I’m fine.” But even as she said that, Alex was glaring daggers, knives, swords and every other sharp object at Helga’s back. “Thank you.”
“It’s okay. I didn’t see everything, but that was really rude of her. If she wants to be a Champion she shouldn’t act like that.” The boy seemed to realize how angry he sounded and he quickly apologized. “Sorry for that.”
“Raphael!” A boy with dirty blonde hair stood by the entrance to the Hall of the Slain and waved at Raphael. “Come on!”
“J’arrive, Louis!” Raphael called out to the other boy. “I hope I’ll see you around,” he told Alex before putting his name in the Goblet and running to the other boy. They intertwined their fingers and walked into the Hall of the Slain.
“You know what I said about killing her?” T.J said. “I take it back. Let’s torture her, it’ll make the suffering last longer.”
The groups of friends chose to ignore T.J’s violent suggestion and simply nodded. They were already making lists of potential punishments.
////////////////
The day went by as slow as a snail for every student at Hogwarts, but finally the time had arrived when they would learn who would be Champions. The students poured into the great Hall, for once immediately sitting at their tables. The food of the Halloween feast was served and students eat in between talking among themselves lively. The air was filled with chattering as the last friendly dares were made about who would represent each school.
As dinner was finishing, Headmaster Odin stood up from his seat. He hit his Goblet with his spoon and a loud, crisp sound was made, amplified by magic. Everybody stopped talking at once and turned to look at him.
“My dear students,” he began, “I am sure you are all excited to learn who will be the three brave fellows to represent each of our schools in the Triwizard Tournament.” The Hall burst into applause as everybody showed the Headmaster their agreement. Odin smiled before continuing. “I assume you would prefer get to the point, as you youngsters say, so let’s see who have been chosen by the Goblet of Fire. I’m curious to find out myself.”
Applause filled the Hall once more, accompanied by howls and even cat-whistles. The chest with the Goblet of Fire was levitated on top of the small stage set in front of the teacher’s table. Headmaster Gilbert stepped forward. He took the Goblet in his hands and held it steadily.
“Beauxbatons Academy of Magic!” He bellowed in a clear voice. The Goblet’s small orange flames burst to the ceiling, turning into a vibrant, almost blinding blue. A single piece of parchment floated inside the fire, not one corner of it scorched by the heat.
As the fire quelled, the paper floated gently onto Headmaster Gilbert’s hand. The entire Hall was watching him with bated breath as he unfolded the paper and read the name it had written on it plain and clear.
“Raphael Beaumont!”
The clapping inside the Hall of the Slain sounded like a thunderstorm as Raphael, the tall boy with the dark eyes that helped up Alex yesterday stood up. The applause only increased the closer he got to the stage, his school being by far the loudest. He made his way to the stage with his shoulders pushed back and eyes looking straight ahead, but he was obviously overthinking it – he walked like a person who put too much thought into every step and he clearly felt the eyes of everyone in the room on his back.
Raphael stood next to his Headmaster as Headmistress Sonia stepped forward. She took the Goblet in her strong hands and with the boldness and certainty of a commander howled, “Durmstrang Institute!”
Flames exploded out of the Goblet once more, tall and mesmerizing. The only thing that was heard in the dining hall as the piece of parchment floated down to her hands were quiet whispers. Unfolding the parchment with steady hands, she read in a booming voice.
“Helga Leifsson!”
Applause filled the Hall once more, but Alex and his friends refused to take any part in it. Helga stood up and walked to the stage with the air of certainty and elegance of a model, not once faltering in her step or looking scared, nose held high.
“Whoever is chosen from Hogwarts better kick her ass,” Alex grumbled, stabbing his meat with his spoon and imagining he was digging the piece of cutlery into Helga’s flesh.
Last but not least, Headmaster Odin stepped forward and cupped the Goblet in his hands, old and wrinkled head steady with years’ worth of experience. In a voice so loud you would have never thought he was capable of making, he shouted, “Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardy!”
The flames raged high and powerful, showering the students in their dazzling light. The piece of parchment floated inside the flames like one of the paper boats Magnus and his mum would make and put in a lake. The parchment drifted down to Odin’s hands and he unfolded it carefully. He read loud and clear, leaving no one in the room a doubt about the name he uttered.
“Magnus Chase!”
Magnus suddenly felt like he was underwater. He knew there was sound, he knew the other students were clapping for him to get up and go join the Champions on the stage, but it all felt like it was happening too far away. It wasn’t really him, the Goblet couldn’t have picked out his name out of all these talented people. Yet even as he thought all that, as much as he couldn’t believe, people from his table were already pushing him to get up.
He somehow found himself on his feet, moving in a daze towards the stage. He wished he was walking as confidently as Raphael or at least as elegantly as that cow Helga, but he knew he must have looked pathetic next to them.
As the metaphorical water from his ear cleaned, the sound of applause didn’t seem to come from miles away. He realized it was his four friends who were cheering and clapping the loudest, edging him on by chanting his name like Mallory (“Magnus! Magnus! Magnus!”) or saying kind of inappropriate things like T.J (Kick their asses, Magnus! @#$% them!).
His eyes drifted to Alex, who might have been the single loudest person in the entire room. He had one leg up on the table, trying to climb on it but being held back by Sam, who was shouting for him just as loudly. One of Alex’s hands was cupped around his mouth as a megaphone and his other fist was pumping in the air as he yelled combinations of Mallory’s and T.J’s encouragements.
“Go get ‘em, Magnus! Woo hoo!” He yelled passionately, scaring a few of the other Slytherins.
Magnus smiled to himself as he made the last few steps to the stage, now walking with his head held high in pride.
Each Headmaster took their Champion by the hand and raised their joined hands in the air as Odin made the final announcement of the night.
“My dear students, I present to you the Triwizard Tournament Champions!”

I watched My Little Pony: Equestrian Girls (2013)
Or: This wasn’t what I signed up for when I started watching this show, but now I’m suckered in.
If I was better at planning things, I would have started with this review. But, here we are.
Some history As stated previously, I was not exactly excited to watch the Equestrian Girls movie (mainly because this commercial still haunts my nightmares). It was a lot better than I had expected, but that doesn’t mean it does;t have flaws. Lots and lots of flaws. The biggest of which being: this feels like fan fiction. Now, let me elaborate: I have seen a lot of people compare works to fan fiction implying that it’s bad or poorly written. That is not at all true or fair. Fan fiction can be complex and well-written and way more interesting than a lot of published fiction. But there are certain thing s a writer can get away with in fan fiction that doesn’t work in other writing. For example, in stories based on, say, a popular tv show, you don’t need to go into detail about a character’s appearance or characteristics because the reader already knows all of those details. A good writer uses a pre-established world and people to get right to the meat of a story and explore other aspects of them. That would be fine, except this movie was intended to be a back-door pilot to a new show.  Let that sink in: they wanted to take a familiar and complex universe with a unique premise and make a high school au.
The high school au is actually an easy to understand phenomenon. The advice most given to young writers is “write what you know.” I’m not going to discuss whether or not this is good advice, but it does explain a few things. The average age for fan fiction writers is 12-20. What do people in this age know a lot about? The building they spend eight hours a day, five days a week for sixteen years sitting in, thinking about tv shows. Why shouldn’t they write bout their favorite characters doing the same? The problem arises when Hollywood executives who haven’t been in a high school for thirty years decide to screw up a simple concept by taking your favorite characters and using every high school cliche in the book. They do that so often in this movie, I made a bingo game for it. Feel free to play along:
Tumblr media
Enough stalling, to the movie:
The film starts with the princess summit. If you didn’t see the (I can’t believe I’m writing this) controversial season three finale where resident brainiac Twilight Sparkle becomes a princess alicorn, too bad. This is not explained and will be a pretty important plot point. It is nice that they give some brief characterization at the beginning, but they don’t say the other Mane Six’s names. Didn’t this come out in theaters? A movie- even one based off a tv show- should provide this information so if someone who’s never seen the show watches it, they can understand the references. The Rugrats movies did it, the Wild Thornberrys movie did it,  and this movie should have done it.
Perchance could this hooded figure that’s creeping about after dark be a villain? Meet Sunset Shimmer. She was Princess Celestia’s  pupil who went rogue after her desire for great power overtook her good nature. Sound familiar?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No? Good
Ah plot contrivances . I understand that these are the bedrock to most movies based in magical universes, but it shouldn’t make me think “how convenient” every five minutes. Maybe I wouldn’t feel this way if it were actually explained what a moon means. They have days. They have months. They have years. HOW LONG IS A MOON? EXPLAIN YOUR UNIT OF TIME, EQUESTRIA!!!
Ok, Twilight’s reaction to being turned in to a human (?) is hilarious. I read that the writers made Spike a dog to avoid the weird dragon age implication, and it is pretty funny, but why does he know how she should act in this world? (And why does that outfit make her look like an anime character?)
I know they needed to get all the characters we the audience are familiar with into one long sight gag, but why is Diamond Tiara in a high school?  How do ages translate in this universe? It’s things like this that reinforce the fan fiction argument
About the songs in this: they’re not great. They aren’t terrible by any means, but after season three (I actually quite enjoyed the songs in the finale) it’s a tad dissappointing
Over fourteen minutes in and we finally get to meet the Mane 6 doppelgängers and the villain antagonist of the piece. Aaaaand she’s a one-dimensional mean girl stereotype. Twilight can fight the literal spirit of chaos, but can she survive Regina George?
Actual Disney Princess Fluttershy. But how does she carry around any books without crushing those animals? My high school backpack would have squished Angel bunny
Princess Celestia: thousand year old omniscient being who raises the sun, demoted to a public high school principal. Not even a school board super intendant. It sucks to be you, babe. That design is beyond hideous btw
The instant they said “princess”, I just knew we were in for a ride. Look, that was the easiest comparison for what was going on in the MLP-verse, but the princess of a dance doesn’t really do anything. They get their pictures the school paper, and maybe the yearbook and that’s all. It’s not like she’s running for class president or something that would actually affect the student body
So are they seniors? There are three pictures of Sunset winning the title, so…
The moments of self-awareness are really jarring, especially because the principal just spoke to a new student without asking for transcripts or grades or anything
You know, maybe show a little more than just one scene of making Fluttershy cry (a feat so easy her pet rabbit does it on a regular basis) if you want me to believe that Sunset is so mean and scary. She’s not exactly Heather Chandler
If there is one phrase that needs to be expunged from screen-writers’ vocabulary, it is “rule the school.” It is quite possibly the single worst cliche I have ever seen and is usually the worst part of any high school movie. Maybe if Sunset was using her magic to control these people it would be different, but we don’t see that. The lunch room would be the perfect setting to showcase how she divides people in order to keep them weak (a la the Hunger Games), but no such luck
Some hilarious foreshadowing at the hands of Pinkie, and some flat exposition from Applejack. We get it! Sunset is a mean girl! Those exist, but it doesn’t make her an all-powerful villain! So far Rainbow Dash has been presented as a better antagonist than her. Your close friend can do more to stab you in the back than someone who’s shows up just complain about decorations
Sunset disrespected the cider! Kick her ass, AJ!
I’m really glad they found the only poorly-lit corner of the school to have the confrontation scene. But honestly, isn’t running unopposed kind of a pathetic way to win? Like, wouldn’t Sunset rather crush someone on her way to victory to establish dominance? The addition of the new mythos as to what happens when an element of harmony is brought to another universe is actually a nice addition, but I bet we won’t hear about it again until the climax
So the Main 6 5 were friends and something split them apart? I bet it must be something very serious to divide such a close friend group. Or perhaps a simple yet frustrating misunderstanding that ruins all suspense. Probably the latter. That photo of the younger characters is the most adorable thing i’ve ever seen, though
The moment I’ve been waiting thirty two minutes for: Rarity’s appearance! And it took me that long to figure out that they are basically all wearing the same outfit. I think this might be the case of designing for the merchandise before designing the characters: Doll skirts are waaaaaay easier to sew than doll pants, and those knee-high boots mean less anatomy to worry about. Did that toy line take off? I feel like I never see them in stores...
I suppose I should be asking why the school would care about someone they’ve never met doing something embarassing on a video, but in real life everyone would just assume Twilight was on drugs. Also, I’m pretty sure smear campaigns would get you disqualified from the race
So technology ruined their friendship. That’s not what’s said, but that is what’s being implied
This is the biggest example of how you can get by without detailed characterization in fan fiction but not published writing: the audience know what element each pony doppelgänger stands for because they’ve had three seasons to earn that trait. These characters have not. For the most part, none of them have even slightly acted like them. Rarity’s really the only one, being generous and helping someone she had never met hide from the crowd who has come to mock her shame. I suppose Fluttershy was kind, but Twilight stood up for her first and she was kind of just returning the favor. Applejack has’t had the chance to be honest (providing exposition does not count), Pinkie was visibly angry at one point, and and ending a friendship over a petty squabble is the exact opposite of loyalty. Rainbow Dash would not have ended the feud if Twilight hadn’t intervened. I know this is a seventy minute movie and they have to move the story along, but maybe have less montages and more exploration of character. Friendship is Magic parts 1 and 2 was only forty five minutes only and they managed to introduce a new world, characters, and a plot setup while keeping the story going
And just like that, the conflict is resolved. Rainbow’s design is HORRIBLE. What is up with that skirt? And more importantly: how does being bad at a sport mean you will be a good princess? Wouldn’t her willingness to fix a friendship say more about her character?
On to the annoying blue elephant in the room: I hate Flash Sentry. I hate him as a character plot device and I have no use for him. Here is what I have written in my notes for this scene:
Tumblr media
Looking past the fact that only one main character has ever shown an interest in a romantic relationship, watching the normally competent and intelligent Twilight act awkward around a boy who (need I remind you) is a different species than she, makes me sick to my stomach. If you like him: fine. If you ship them: whatever. I do not care. This is not the worst ship I have seen come out of this show/movie, but he has no personality or character. He is generic “boy” character who could have been written out and the movie would have been the same. Every time he is in a scene, I roll my eyes and groan. That is all I’m going to say about him
Rarity being overly dramatic gives me life, but the speech about unity just beats you over the head with the movie’s message. I get the comparison, but being part of a school is not the same thing as being a part of a community or kingdom. The second you graduate, you stop caring about your high school. School pride is not the same thing as nationalism
So just to be clear: girl messes up using a copier = comedy gold. Group sings a frankly embarrassing song to the entire lunchroom = best thing ever, let’s vote for her. In real life, the principal would have just walked in and suspended all of them
Why on earth would they manually doctor the photos? It would be so much work to cut those things out. Is there no photoshop equivalent in this world? Why leave a paper trail? But, on the plus side, here is an actual dilemma! Twilight has to figure out another- Oh wait no, let’s resolve that instantly by having Blue Hair McThiscouldhavebeenliterallyanyone find the photos. It’s almost as if this scene was pointless.
Don’t flirt in front of the administer! Geez
Oh look, more conflict. Twilight has to get the crown and leave tonight. Maybe that scene did have a point. Some actual stakes, if this changed the plan to get the crown. But it doesn’t. We know they are going to redecorate the gym. This is just slowing down the plot and taking time away from developing the characters
This is a genuinely sweet scene with Spike. It is one of the best scenes in the whole movie, and it brings up a good point: Twilight feels alone because she is the only one who understands the full weight of what getting (or more importantly: possibly losing)  the crown means, in this universe and her home. But she’s not alone because the people who are depending on her will support her and try to help no matter what the outcome is
HOW LONG IS THIRTY MOONS?!?!
Oh Pinkie Pie. You majestic creature
Oh my gosh, an actually appropriate reactions to a talking animal! Wow. Usually a movie like this would just have a character say, “huh, weird” and no one would react
So the conflict is once again resolved quickly. The problem is no more. This was slightly more satisfying because is did require other people to assist in fixing the gym, thereby bringing the divided school together, but it happened in one musical number. When you rush important plot points, they lose significance
Well, Twilight has six hours until she potentially loses her magic crown to the villain and is stuck in this world while Sunset takes over Equestrian, so IT’S TIME FOR A MAKEOVER MOTAGE!
The animals are helping Fluttershy get ready- this is proof she is a Disney Princess!
Ah yes, the formal cowboy hat. A staple of every dance
I don’t know anyone in real life who’s actually taken a limo to a dance
Remember how I said I wasn’t going to talk about Flash again? Well, I lied. His car screams “douche”, but his personality screams nothing at all because ewe know nothing about this character except he plays the guitar. Granted, that’s usually the amount of info we got about the love interest in a late nineties teen flick, but this isn’t one of those. Maybe instead of that soccer scene, they could have provided reasons for me to care about whether Twilight will dance with him. Just saying
The moment you’ve all been waiting for since it was set up in the first act has arrived. I know you were all on the edge of your seat wondering if Twilight would win.
Suspense is a tricky thing to do well. You need to build up to it without constantly reminding the audience to the point that they no longer care about it. There is a quote by Alfred Hitchcock that I’m not going to put in its entirety, but here’s the link, that basically says you can’t have a big Thing happen with no buildup. We know that something potentially bad could happen if Sunset gets the crown, but the majority of the movie has been about this darn dance. You almost forget just why Twilight wants to win, other than this is a high school movie. When you only leave fifteen minutes for the climax, with little to no build up (do we even know what Sunset can do?) it’s going to be unsatisfying. I might be putting way to much thought into this kids movie. But wait, no I’m not. This show is not one of the time-wasting cartoons of yore. It covers complex subjects and serious topics, so pardon me if I expect more out of them than cliche after cliche
In a rare display of actual villainy, Sunset offers Twilight a way home in exchange for the crown. This leads to one of the few scenes that shows her self-sacrifice: Twilight cares more about the safety of her home and her friends than her own comfort. I question what has Sunset actually accomplished there that’s so bad, but Twilight is acting noble (and I mean that in the most unsarcastic was possible)
And she just steals the crown. And becomes the most hilarious looking demon ever
How has no one pulled out their cell phone and videotaped this yet?
I question how effective the army of easily wounded humans would be against Equestrian, which is full of creatures who have magic, hooves, and stabbing horns, but whatever
What’s this? Could it be… the magic of friendship? Whoever could have guessed?
This magical pony transformation scene will really come back to haunt me (but at least no one said pony up)
If I’m being fair, this is basically what happened at the end of Friendship is Magic, part 2
So no one’s going to question what just happened? Has the internet desensitized them that much? Don’t act like you know what’s going on Celestia! And How are they going to explain the destroyed property to the insurance company?
Well, the evil has been defeated so it’s time for Twilight to go through the portal and return home. But not without a quick dance first
This scene is cute, I guess. And it is canon that Twilight can’t dance in horse form either
What was their backup plan if Twilight failed? Just wait around there?
Oh good, Twilight has the adventure of a lifetime so let’s end the movie on a really important note: talking about a boy. There’s your moral.
I know I nitpicked a lot (and overused “in real life”) but I do enjoy Equestria Girls. The first time I watched this movie, I was significantly more harsh than I should have been. It’s cute and mostly harmless, with some genuinely funny scenes. Despite the many many plot holes, it is an alright beginning to the series and most of the issues I took with this get resolved in later movies. The antagonist might me mostly absent and doesn’t play a huge role until the last fifteen minutes, but It’s worth sitting through this nonsense to see Sunset’s redemption arc. I don’t know how this would be as a standalone TV show, but there is a line of comics based on it that you can check out.  3.2/5 You know, for a universe that has a character named Cranky Doodle Donkey, Flash Sentry is still the worst name I have seen for a fictional character (and until I rewatched for this review, I thought his name was Flash Century). Here are some unused zingers I had for him: Flash Sentry sounds like a boy band from the early 2000s Flash Sentry sounds like a Flash Gordon fan fiction title Flash Sentry sounds like the name of a bankrupt film company Flash Sentry sounds like a character from Zoolander Flash Sentry sounds like a villain from Rocky IV Flash Sentry sounds like the name of a Fallout Boy song Flash Sentry sounds like the name of a horse that’s predicted to win the Triple Crown but trips during the Belmont … oh, I guess that joke’s not so funny when he’s actually a horse. But enough about me, what did you think? Were there too many scenes of Twilight not understanding the new world, or did those make the movie? Did Trixie have the best line in the entire movie? Will I get the sequel recap up in a timely manner?

On the TV show, the actress plays Gala Scaramucci, wife to the big bad guy of Francisco Scaramucci, or Mr. Blue (Ritchie Coster). The two try to outwit and outsmart the efforts of Nick Sax (Christopher Meloni) and his imaginary blue horse, Happy (voiced by Patton Oswalt). The arc of the Gala character was profound for audience members tuning in each week, and Sullivan seemed to love her role. However, it almost never happened for the accomplished actress. “It’s been such a pleasure working on it,” Sullivan said in a recent phone interview. “Basically back in January of 2017, I was asked to audition for the pilot, so it was a very formal audition. I went in. I think probably about a week later, my agent was like, ‘You’re one of the top picks.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, cool.’ And then a couple days later he called me, and he’s like, ‘Unfortunately they’re going to pass on you because they’re going to go with somebody who has more of a name,’ which I have heard many times before in this industry. And I was like, ‘OK, no worries.’ And then a week later, he called me, and he was just like, ‘You got it. I don’t know what happened, but it’s all yours.’ So that was kind of the process of getting the part.” When she secured the Gala role, Sullivan was excited and intrigued by the potential of the character and the offbeat series. Right before the audition, she acquainted herself with the graphic novel by Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson. [caption id="attachment_9656" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Acting Program NYC - Carly Sullivan - Happy! on SyFy[/caption] “I had read the graphic novel actually probably the day before I auditioned,” she said. “I was familiar with Grant Morrison, but I had not read the Happy! series. And when I read it, I just thought, how are they going to do this? It’s a really out there graphic novel, and it’s so different. And I was like, wow, this is really exciting stuff, so, yeah, I was very, very, very excited. And it turned out to be all the things I thought it would be and more honestly, so very cool.” Sullivan’s character of Gala is not in the original graphic novel, but Morrison and showrunner Brian Taylor decided to branch out from the source material and fill in some narrative blanks. “So when I read the graphic novel, I was like, OK, I don’t see Gala in it,” Sullivan said. “It’s interesting, too, because in my audition, I think it was like maybe only two pages of [dialogue], so I didn’t have a real in-depth understanding of my character. But I could tell from just those two pages, I got a sense of who she was and what her marriage was like with Blue. Blue is the main bad guy this season, and I thought, wow, there’s a lot I can do here, a lot. And it’s interesting, I watched Big Little Lies this year [on HBO], and I remember Nicole Kidman’s character. I was like, you know, I feel like there’s part of Gala here, and so Nicole Kidman’s performance not only excited me but really inspired me. I was like, OK, I can do a lot here, and I can bring this repressed woman to life. I don’t know why. It just really excited me. I feel like it’s the perfect time in our environment to kind of play these women who are in abusive relationships and then become very empowered, so, yeah, I was very excited when I realized what I would be doing.”

Sullivan said that even if she wasn’t involved in Happy!, she probably would be watching the show. She counts herself as a “sci-fi nerd,” and she loves TV, especially in this time that she calls the “golden era” of dramas and comedies. “I just loved the structure of it,” she said. “I love the longer work schedule because I love to work. Even if I was not in it, I would love to watch it, and I’m not just saying that. I like shows that push boundaries. I like shows that make you think. Happy! has that element of everything is connected, fate, there is no such thing as coincidence. And it reminds me a little bit of Lost or The Leftovers, two of my all-time favorite shows. Yeah, I definitely like shows that are out there, and I love comedy. I mainly work in comedy, and this is definitely a very dark comedy.” [caption id="attachment_9658" align="aligncenter" width="800"] Acting Program NYC - Carly Sullivan - Maggie Flanigan Studio - (917) 789-1599[/caption]

Appearing before The Dramacourt: 20th Century Boy and Girl Eps 1 to 4
***If this is your first time browsing The Drama Files, please read The Rules section first for our reviewing and rating system***
Issues:
Whether Sa Jin Jin, Han Areum, Jang Young-shim are friendship goals.
Whether it’s possible to be a 35-year-old virgin and be a famous actress.
Whether Sa Jin Jin dealt with her scandal well.
The Rule(s):
Hell, yes!
It’s possible!
Yes!
Analysis:
Jubiemon J: These first episodes of this drama had everything I wanted in a romance/slice of life drama. I loved how realistic the situations that each character faced were and for once, I’m actually totally adoring the lead actress’s character, Sa Jin Jin. Han Yeseul has also been bumped up a lot in my books of good actresses. She does a great job portraying a down-to-earth popular actress who has a sweet, caring personality. At first glance, Sa Jin Jin might give someone the feeling of someone that’s a bit arrogant, but we see that she’s a hardworking, honest girl who doesn’t do anything scandalous and has a great attitude. Contrast that with the young actress that’s jealous of her . . . ugh that young actress was such a bitch to Sa Jin Jin. I got quite mad! I would have wanted to throw something at her if she did those things to me, yet Sa Jin Jin handled everything with so much class and coolness.
Honestly, this drama does so well with these delightful surprises. I wasn’t expecting Sa Jin Jin to have this first love reunion type of scenario. In the beginning, she seemed head over heels over Anthony, but now it seems like that’s just a fan girl type of crush. I also love how these coincidental meetings she has with Gong Jiwon just feel so natural and serendipitous. They aren’t like those meetings that we see often in rom coms where they’re totally unrealistic and just way too into fantasy land. I love how often, we see that it’s Jiwon who spots Jin Jin and then he does this look of awe where we can tell that he is completely in love with her. My heart melted so many times when he looked at her from afar in that way. Moreover, I wasn’t expecting him to save her so many times and the beautiful part was that he never proudly claimed that he was the one saving her or showed directly that he was supporting her. He just quietly . . . helped her along. Man . . . what a perfect guy.
RedRosette J: I agree with Jubiemon. This drama totally surprised me too! I wasn’t expecting it to be written, produced and acted so well! Han Ye Seul surprised me. I have seen her previous works and wasn’t really impressed, but she really does capture the heart of Sa Jin Jin as a down-to-Earth celebrity with a heart of gold. And blowing me away with his quiet glances and wistful eyes is Kim Ji Suk! I’ve been a long time fan of his since I saw him in I Need Romance 2 and fell totally in love with his weirdo womanizing character who falls for his friend’s noona in Oh Hae Young Again. He’s really the one that sells us on this romance at this point. I’m totally totally #TeamJiWon!

RedRosette J Aside: Here’s Kim Ji Suk giving us those awesomely wistful, lovelorn eyes:
Jubiemon J: The side characters too are so amazing! Usually for dramas, I get obsessed with one character’s story and am indifferent to other people’s stories, but then for this drama, I’m 100% there for all of the side characters. They’re very relatable and genuine. Areum adores food and is awkwardly funny in her own way. Jang Young-shim is more shy and quiet, but she isn’t boring at all. She was looking for a job as a lawyer and I could . . . totally sympathise with her efforts. Been there. Done that and will still have to do that later on in life. Each guy that the girls meet seem promising too. I can’t wait to watch more of them!
RedRosette J: I totally agree. I usually also get invested in one particular story line and tend to gloss over the others but in this case, I’m totally interested in everyone’s story line. I want to know if the awkward, food loving Areum ends up with the Peaked-In-High-School Doctor or the Young-And-Hot-Pilot. I’m also really really siding with Young Shim and I can’t wait to see her put her awful father in his place and possibly also fall for her hot lawyer boss.
Have friends who have their priorities straight
Areum – the flight attendant who loves food
Young-And-Hot-Pilot
Peaked-In-High-School-Doctor: Present
Peaked-In-High-School-Doctor: High School
Young Shim: Lawyer looking for a job
Hot lawyer boss
Jubiemon J: And can we just talk about the wonderful editing and the touching OSTs? I wished that some of the production crew from Scarlet Heart Ryeo could take lessons here. This is top notch editing! I loved how natural it was for us to see all of them during their high school years and those memories gave us a good understanding of the characters. The transitions between scenes were done so well that I could barely feel this weird gap for scenes like you know how sometimes the character will just be driving and driving and wasting time . . . yeah none of that was there. And the OSTs were cued RIGHT where I needed them.
Okay . . . I confess. I cried during one point of this drama. It was the part where Jin Jin was reminiscing of the days when she and her boss were still struggling to make ends meet. She was just becoming an actress and he was doing everything he could to promote her. He was putting up posters of her while it was snowing super hard. Then we saw this interview of her saying that she was going to switch agencies but then she said that they’d have to pay her 1000 billion won for her to do that. Then the boss laughed. I found this whole scene to be particularly touching because it felt like years of trust, friendship and work relationship were at play.
When everything starts going wrong
The good old days
Jubiemon J: And the ending . . . with Jin Jin in the elevator with Jiwon. Oh my God! Deja-vu vibes. We had seen this scene before where he’d take the 14th floor to walk her home instead of sticking to the 13th floor. Now it’s similar, except he asks her those questions and then we get a recap of what happened in the elevator before. They had kissed. Ah! What a way to end things. Man I’m craving more. I’m so looking forward to Mondays now. What is this? I’m supposed to despise Mondays.
RedRosette J: I also really really loved the awkward high school scenes between Ji Won and Jin Jin. It’s so funny how they were laughing and singing with the other girls and the minute they left, the air changed and the awkward crush vibes set in. It’s so so well done; from the palpable awkwardness to the shy glances to the sweaty palms. It’s your first crush in all its glory and horror. The elevator kiss goes down in drama history this year as the best awkward first kiss this year (for me at least). I’m excited to watch them re-create this as adults.

When you find yourself in the same elevator where you had your first kiss with the guy who kissed you…
…you become your awkward 17 year old self again…
Jubiemon J: Finally, can we just say that Kim Ji Suk is absolutely amazing in this drama? He hasn’t said much in this drama, yet you can tell how his character feels about Jin Jin just by one look. I took a look at his acting profile and man he has always been stuck as one of the 2nd leads or side characters. Why did they keep him in a dungeon? Release this man from the depths for more lead roles!
Why have you not played lead roles before???
Issue 1: Whether Sa Jin Jin, Han Areum, Jang Young-shim are friendship goals.
Jubiemon J: Yes, yes, and yes! I loved watching how tight and close they were from high school to now. They’ve had hiccups before to their friendship where they all had feelings for one guy, which was likely to be Jiwon. However, their friendship prevailed, except . . . Jiwon is back!
They’re always bonding over food and talking about anything from lighthearted subjects like celebrity crushes to more serious ones about Jin Jin’s scandal. The friends also rushed out to help Jin Jin to clear her name. They went to the radio show to help back up Jin Jin’s story that she was only at the hospital to visit Areum and that she wasn’t there for some abortion. She just overslept there for seven hours.
RedRosette J: For me, the real selling point in this drama was the friendship between the girls. It’s really a friendship that is built on trust, respect and time. These girls are more than just friends at this point. They are family. And I think that even though in the past Ji Won came between them, as adults, I doubt that it will tear them apart because there was never really any contest. It was Jin Jin and Ji Won from the very beginning and there really isn’t any room for anyone else. It’s also in the little things that the friendship is so great. They are so supportive of each other ranging from Areum’s surgery to Jin Jin’s scandal. These guys are totally #friendshipgoals.
Friends at 15
Friends at 35
Supportive to the end
There is no space for anyone else in their bubble
Issue 2: Whether it’s possible to be a 35-year-old virgin and be a famous actress.
Jubiemon J: I think it’s totally possible for that scenario to happen. She might be super popular, but she might not have met people that she liked. Since she seems like the serious sort for love, she wouldn’t be dating someone randomly or having flings here and there. Plus, Jin Jin appeared to be very career-oriented and worked very hard to get to where she is today, so she probably didn’t have much time to date or be in a steady relationship. I think it’s normal for people to sacrifice some things to get to where they are today and for her, that was likely love. I don’t think there’s anything shameful about her being a 35-year-old virgin. It’s her choice whether to date or not. I’m glad Jin Jin is proud enough to flaunt that there’s nothing wrong with her.
RedRosette J:  I totally agree with Jubiemon. It’s nobody’s place to judge Jin Jin’s life choices and the fact that she consciously made the decision not to date anyone (while I’m sure that men were throwing themselves at her) is representative of her priorities and principles. I also agree that I think its very admirable that Jin Jin is strong enough to stand up for her choices and say that she isn’t ashamed of her choices and that this is a normal choice for a woman.
People need to MYOB
Issue 3: Whether Sa Jin Jin dealt with her scandal well.
Jubiemon J: Totally! She kept her cool all the time. When she was faced with that huge airport crowd, she just kept walking until . . . it hit her that she had some alleged sex scandal out there. Thank God Jiwon showed up, held her hand, and marched forward with her! When that young actress was clearly bullying Jin Jin, Jin Jin still stood up for herself. Jin Jin also kept her cool at home until she finally couldn’t take it anymore and snapped at her mom. Her mom was really adding a lot of stress to her even though Jin Jin was doing her best to not make her mom worry. Jin Jin didn’t even get all pissed when this scandal went out and didn’t blame anyone. She settled it well herself and cleared her name. Fortunately, Jiwon was also helping her secretly, but I doubt he would have helped her had she not been someone that made him fall for her in the first place.
RedRosette J: She totally handled it really well. I liked what Jin Jin said on the radio show when she talked about how she wasn’t the woman in the sex tape. In particular she talked about victim blaming and how it impacts and ostracizes women (who are usually the victims in those scenarios) and how that needs to stop. She stands up for herself and for what is right and isn’t afraid of public perception. I’d like to think that even if Ji Won wasn’t there at the airport or to send that video about her having always been single, she would have still managed to handle the situation with grace and dignity. I really like the way that Jin Jin’s character is written and acted.
Standing up for yourself like…
Conclusion: Appeal Allowed.
Rating: 5 = Kyaaahhh!! ❤ (This drama is giving us all the feels. We love it so far!)
