A Good Book Will Leave Me Shook. It will take me to, or back to, a comforting and familiar place. Let me explain. I was born in the rural MS Delta in 1969 to a 22 year old single mother. I was raise by an aunt and uncle in their late 60s who had raised 2 prior generations. We lived on a place called Hollywood Plantation, where the crops were cotton and soybeans. We lived and Uncle worked on Mr. Goodwin's farm/plantation; Mr. Goodwin provided housing in return for Uncle's employ. When his health started to fail, Uncle would walk and deliver their mail and newspaper to the main house as a continuance of employment. It wasn't until a few years ago that I realized that we were essentially sharecroppers. I grew up, a sharecropper child... Sunshine In The Delta took me back to that time, in a good way. The only difference between Neeyla's story and mine is that I grew up outside Greenville MS in the country, and this story is set in the Greenwood MS area. Sunshine captures the very essence of growing up in the MS Delta, of surviving tough times, of coming into one's own person. It's beautiful, poignant, and an absolute gem. Miss Erica Sandifer has penned a literary masterpiece in my book (pun intended). She is a masterful storyteller who breathes life into her characters and their story. I highly recommend Sunshine In The Delta, it is an excellent read.
