Cups of Coffee and a Pile of Books: The Truth About Becoming an English Major
Becoming an English Major means a chain of cups of coffee and a huge pile of books. This is often the representation of others when they hear about this course – my course. While this isn’t always true, at least, for the most part, I can’t help but feel like the perception of people that becoming an English Major is just essentially - to teach, has some veracity in it. However, for people like me, that is to say, you guys who are also taking this major, know very well that being an English Major is more than meets the eye. It’s more than its face value, and far deeper than just teaching grammar and educating kids about the universal language. Hence, stay with me for a few minutes as I share four hard-earned lessons that I experienced first-hand, as we dive deeper into the real spirit of becoming an English Major.
Words can tire you out for real.
I remember the time when I first entered one of my major subjects’ class. I thought, “this is it; I’m finally coming closer to understanding what my course really is”. I later found out I’d spend most of my time drinking unlimited coffee just to reach a deadline for thousand-word essays and scanning through pages and pages of books. One would think it’s easy and enjoyable, and all you do is write and read, but let me tell you, words can be exhausting and repetitive. Imagine writing throughout your college, I mean, that’s what it felt for me. Yet, as time passed by, you learn that just because your course is a repetitive cycle of words and pages, means it ends there. Yes, I’ve been burnt out countless times, but the skills and knowledge I’ve earned from these seemingly endless words, made me realize just how improved I am now with the language and how important English really is.
2. What’s so important about English, anyway?
I often ask myself this before too. I get it, English isn’t our first language, so why dedicate an entire degree for it? Let me share a deep insight regarding this. Communication is most likely the single most important skill that man has ever developed. It will always be vital in our co-existence, especially now with so many cultures and politics dividing us all. Hence, being able to understand each other, no matter the race and culture, will build lasting bridges between nations. This being said, with English being the universal language that all nations are, in some sense, required to learn, it probably is the most significant language to mankind today, and I couldn’t agree more. You see, learning English has global implications, and through endless flow of words, we, English Majors, nurture this huge bridge that develop understanding and comprehension.
3. People are asking: “What is your future with your degree? Become new generation of teachers?”
Yes – and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that. As I’ve mentioned earlier, learning, and developing English as a language has global implications, and being able to share this knowledge with the youth, will hone the future of nation building. Teachers are often underrated. Indeed, we do not win Noble Prizes for curing diseases, and we don’t carry arms to fight for freedom, but let me tell you, there won’t be genius scientists and world leaders without education. Every profession starts with us! We don’t just teach you how to read and write, or develop skills and intelligence, but also compassion, emotional development, and inspiration to “rule the world”. Teachers are called our second parents for a reason! This in itself gives pride to educators. Imagine seeing that one mischievous student you’ve spent so much time teaching in grade school, become the next President someday. That means the world to us.
4. We aren’t just valuable inside the classroom; we are community builders too!
Not because we spend so much time writing reports and visual aids for teaching, it means we’re only important in schools. There is so much more opportunity for English Majors outside the classroom too. I’ve seen journalists, news writers, published writers, and leaders that stemmed from our degree as well. With our knowledge in words and story writing, the scope of what we can do is endless. We study this language for years, so you can just imagine how we can contribute to the future of our society, especially with humanity relying solely on communication for its evolution and progress. I mean, what good is a discovery or an invention if you can’t translate it into understandable words, right?
Yes, I get the presumption about English Majors. You see us gulping through countless cups of coffee and scanning through endless pages of books every day, and that we are being equipped to essentially – teach. However, with all these being said, I hope I have imparted with you a very special lesson. English Majors aren’t just teachers, we are nation-builders, developers of the new generation, and principals of communication. There is so much more I can share with you about my course and experiences, and there is a mountain of lessons I myself still have to confront in the near future. I guess, after earning the degree and facing the outside world, I can share with you my new knowledge then. For now, let me clean up my spilled coffee and put a bookmark on my pile of books, I’m yet to see that light at the end of this tunnel too.

In the past decade, portable devices such as smartphones and tablets have become one of the most ubiquitous and irreplaceable tools for communication, entertainment, and education. Indeed, 98 percent of children under age 8 across all socioeconomic strata have access to a mobile device, and children between ages 3- to 5-years-old spend an average of two and a half hours per day using screens. Although young children are spending significantly more time using screens than recommended by the American Academy of Pediatrics, ed tech—the combination of technology and education—is increasingly embedded in preschool classrooms.
As young children’s screen time continues to rise, parents in the United States have mixed opinions on their young children’s screen time habits.
How do e-books versus printed books potentially affect children’s learning?
Although most parents agree that the media children engage with helps their learning (72 percent) and creativity (60 percent), some studies suggest that parents are overly optimistic about the value of screens in their children’s lives. DeLoache and Chiong (2009), for example, reported that parents of 2-year-olds thought the Brainy Baby and Baby Einstein videos were “educational” and enriching. Yet the Disney company was forced to offer refunds for these DVDs at an estimated cost of $100 million in the absence of any evidence that they were educational. It is important to understand the parameters within which ed tech works best and those situations where it is less effective than interactions with an adult. One such example is children’s engagement with e-books.
Reading with children supports their development and even reduces parents’ stress. During shared book reading, many parents point at pictures and ask their children questions. These and related practices, combined with following children’s pointing fingers and answering their questions, fuel children’s language skills and teach them about the world. In particular, caregivers who link the book to children’s lived experiences contribute to children’s story comprehension.
Parents generally have positive perceptions about reading printed books with their young, preliterate children. However, parents believe that printed books are more educational and entertaining for their children than e-books and are more likely to use print books during routines, such as bedtime, and for bonding. However, when parents are busy, such as when they are preparing meals or showering, they may give children an e-book to keep them entertained.
A recent study found that children can learn just as well from e-books as traditional books when enhancements are simple. While children can learn some content from being read to by an e-book alone, our just-published research suggests that reading an e-book alone cannot serve as a replacement for adult-child reading. Additionally, reading an e-book alone cannot provide the emotional closeness and physical contact that reading with a parent offers.
In particular, the emotional experiences that come from reading books together vanish when children are read to by an e-book alone rather than by an adult. Yet the positive feelings associated with shared book reading contribute to children’s emergent literacy skills and their motivation for reading.
Our study on shared and independent (e-)book reading
A study from our lab compared 4-year-old children’s physiological arousal under three different conditions. In one condition, parents and their children read a hard copy of a book together. In the second, they read the e-book version of the same book together. In the final condition, the children listened to the e-book while sitting alone. Parents and children wore a Fitbit-like wristband to gauge skin conductivity, a measure of physiological arousal that captures engagement during book reading. As engagement is necessary for learning, more arousal signifies that the child is paying attention and is more likely to learn something new.
Children showed significantly greater physiological arousal and more positive emotions (smiling and laughing) when they read with a parent than when they listened to an e-book alone. Importantly, book format did not matter! Children and parents had high levels of arousal and positive emotions when they read together, regardless of whether they read an e-book or a traditional book. These findings mean that shared book reading is about the interactions that occur between a child and their parent. Listening to e-books alone removes the “meat” of the interaction that promotes not only a love of reading, but expands children’s worlds by building their vocabulary, knowledge of sentence structure, and understanding of the text. Handing a child an e-book to listen to independently reduces children’s pleasure and learning compared to reading either a traditional or an e-book with a caregiver. Shared book reading—regardless of format—cannot be replaced by technology.
Given the pervasiveness of ed tech, it is crucial to explore which experiences with technology enrich young children’s learning and which experiences should not replace critical interactions between children and their caregivers. Parents may consider having the children in their lives listen to an e-book rather than engage in shared book reading, especially at bedtime when everyone is tired at the end of a busy day. Although e-books can be engaging and educational, the message from our research is clear: The positive emotional experiences related to shared book reading are not engendered when children listen to an e-book alone. Nor can an e-book offer the personalized dialogue that takes place when a caregiver reads with a child.
Future research must consider how we can inform caregivers, including preschool teachers and parents, about the benefits of shared book reading, and in turn, foster children’s lifelong love of reading and learning. Ed tech has its limitations when considering shared book reading with young children. Those children who are mostly offered e-books are missing out on an emotional and intellectual experience bar none.

DepEd Launched the New Curriculum and Catch-Up Fridays

Learning different skills are very important nowadays. Sad to say but some of the children nowadays are being left behind. As a matter of fact, according to the Department of Education, based on the PISA result in 2023, students in the Philippines are five to six years behind in learning competencies. Basic skills such as reading comprehension and problem solving are indicated in this assessment, however it shows that some students are lack of these skills. Because of this, the Department of Education implemented the MATATAG curriculum and established Catch-Up Fridays in order to address this issue.
MATATAG curriculum is the new proposed curriculum of the Department of Education, headed by its secretary and Vice President Sarah Duterte. According to the DepEd, the MATATAG curriculum aims to make the curriculum relevant to produce job-ready, active, and responsible citizen. It also aims to take a good care to the learners by promoting learner’s well-being, inclusiveness learning, and positive learning environment. In addition, it will give support to the teachers to teach better. Moreover, as stated also by the DepEd, its objectives are to decongest the overcrowded curriculum that resulted in compromised fundamental skills among learners, to make learning competencies age-appropriate and properly sequenced in terms of progression, and to strengthen foundational skills such as literacy and numeracy, and intensify values information among learners. This new curriculum is considered as a stepping stone in enhancing the K-12 Basic Education Program in the Philippines as it acknowledges the challenges faced by the learners.
On the other hand, DepEd also launched the Catch-Up Fridays which is a weekly learning intervention program that requires schools to dedicate half of the day to reading activities and the other half to values, health and peace education. This program both focuses on non-readers and students who are able to read with the help of teachers through their teaching strategy that matches the need of the learner. Learning how to read is very important because it is like breathing in. At a very young age, a child is expected to learned this skill because it is very important aspect in daily life. In addition, in this program, the students are expected to learn not only reading but also, they should be able to comprehend what they are reading. This strategy will help the teachers in order to distinguish if their students are able to comprehend what they read correctly.
