Reading & Writing.

I like reading. The feeling of escaping reality was nice. Even once I could just disappear and act like everything was alright. Even if the character in the stories was going through something heavy, it still felt better than the reality I am faced with every day.

Anything is better than all this..

I like to write, too. To create a world that I could run to when things get tough. I wish I could live in it instead of this life. At least there I could call the shots. I could write my life the way I choose it to be; one that will make me immensely happy.. and sometimes sad. But at least it'll be mine..

Reading and writing is one of the best subjects that I have this semester. I learned and had a lot of fun.

There are a lot of things that I’ve learned in Reading and Writing. It is not just academically but also things that I can use in real life situations. Learning and knowing how to improve my writing skill and avoiding plagiarism is two of the best things I’ve learned. I always thought that my writing skill is already good enough but what I learned in this subject helped me to determine the missing pieces of my works and improve the formulation of my essays. I always keep in mind to not use other people’s work. With that, I continue being more mindful with my works and trying my best to improve every time.

I also love the Book Critique that we had. Me, who loves reading really enjoyed the activity that was given. The fact that I was able to read a new book made me feel really excited. Doing the activity was really fun and I was able to share what I read and the lessons that I’ve learned.

We had several lessons that helped me most during this pandemic and the two lessons that helped me the most are Literature Review, and Resume and Cover Letter. We all know that in the coming years, in Grade 12 and especially in college, we will be having a lot of researches and part of it is a Literature Review. With our lesson, I’m able to understand more and know more how to construct a literature review properly. On the other hand, Resume and Cover Letter is also very helpful because in this time of pandemic, many people and even students are looking for a job to earn money and because it was already taught in Reading and Writing subject, students can now easily work on their resume and cover letter, and apply for a job. Also, for future purposes we can use what we learned after we graduated to apply to the company we dreamed of.

The mode of learning that we have this semester is online and it is not that easy especially to those who are less privileged and have a lot of responsibilities at home. Internet is one of the essentials needed in online mode of learning and not all of the students are capable of having one, so they tend to choose modular and unfortunately, some choose to drop out. We can’t also easily distinguish if it’s actually effective as everything can be searched online. For me, I still prefer the face to face classes because there is an actual interaction between the teacher and the students which made the learning more effective.

There are a lot of challenges that I’ve encountered this semester having an online mode of learning. First, is the internet connection. There are times that we are having our synchronous class and the connection is unstable which makes me disconnected from google meet and not being able to understand the discussion well because its lagging. Next is the overlapping of responsibilities, in academic and in our house. There are a lot of times wherein we have a class but I’m also doing chores such as cooking breakfast which made me distracted and not understanding the lesson.

Then, the anxiety during classes wherein I feel very doubtful about myself when there are recitations and such. Last one is, my mental health. To be honest even before the class started my mental health is already unstable because of some things that happened during this pandemic that gave a huge changes and impact in my life. And it’s really not helpful when I’m doing my school works and having a class. But in the end, despite of the challenges, I was still be able to reach the end of this semester, surviving and I hope that this will last until the next semester having an online class.

In my opinion, other teachers should also do what Ms. Kat was doing wherein there is a “kumustahan session” once or twice a month. To be honest, it was very fun and effective to interact with the students. Also, it reminds the students to have a break between lots of works which makes us less stressed about the requirements. Then, the students and teachers should be more understanding with each other to have a good relationship leading to an effective learning.

This semester seems like a roller coaster ride, had a lot of fun while being scared but in the end, we are still able to reach the last stop.

Saving Mother Nature: Schools Should Use Electronic Textbooks to Save Paper

Day’s generation is at crossroads, rapidly advancing and observing transformations of technology that fundamentally change how they access and read the written words. A significant revolution of printed books towards digital textbooks has been known in the world. According to The Wall Street Journal (2010), “an electronic book (also e-book, ebook, digital book) is a text- and image-based publication in digital form produced on, published by, and readable on computers or other digital devices.” These are books that we have access to in our mobile phones or tablets, and we can find these books on websites like ePub, iBooks store, and many more. Using different kinds of technologies can lessen or eliminate the used of paper in the environment. Hence, schools should need to be eco-friendly, leading them to save paper using electronic textbooks as a substitute for printed books.

Bringing technology into classrooms has had a positive impact on the quality of education delivered. Students and teachers unanimously agree upon the benefits of using electronic textbooks in education. Electronic textbooks eliminate the extra costs of shipping and delivery, not to mention most online textbooks cost about 50-60% less than print versions. Thus, it can save money and use the extra funds to invest in teachers, additional resources for students, or after-school programs. They are more environment friendly compared to printed books. "Aside from the 16 million tons of paper it consumes each year, leading to 32 million fallen trees annually, the industry's carbon footprint is enormous." (Industry Sights, 2015). Moreover, an electronic textbook is easy to carry around. Instead of carrying a bag full of books, it is easier to carry a mobile device supporting ebooks. Most students these days always carry a mobile-based device. A digital textbook's portability allows students to refer to their notes and course materials anytime they want. Instead of carrying multiple books, students can now have everything in one place. Furthermore, Over 50% of the world's population has access to the Internet. Yet we all sometimes have trouble with connectivity and network issues. To ensure that the Internet connection does not hamper the learning process, mobile devices, these days, offer offline services (Harman, 2018). Students can now download any content they want and save it on their device and go through them later at their convenience. Online textbooks have been a major convenient to people, especially instances like the COVID – 19 since students have a hard time buying and having printed books. Despite its pros, electronic textbooks also have some cons on it. Students of all ages are used to accessing social media and online entertainment frequently. When Facebook and YouTube are just a tap away from study time, it can prove too tempting. With the little separation between education and leisure, frequent online distractions can disrupt study time and hinder academic progress. Also, using electronic textbooks can hinder or hurt our eyesight since students will stare at their technologies all day to study. Thus, leading them to have eye strains from staring at the screens too long can become a health problem. Some students also read in the dark, causing them to have screen insomnia, which cancels out a benefit of using electronic textbooks.

In conclusion, schools should use electronic textbooks instead of printed ones to save paper as this can help the mother nature and benefit people from its given conveniences, like the cheaper cost, the easy accessibility to use, and the offline access that it brings along. Although there are some cons in using electronic textbooks, it still outsmarts the printed textbooks in more ways than another.

Impotance of Reading and Writing

Reading and writing is a skill that everyone must have and attain. Because it will be a life-long skill. We will use it for our everyday life.

There are many importance of reading and writing. First, if we know how to read and write, we will not be too ignorant. We will be more aware of some articles or happenings on something if we know how to read. Second, we will not be taken advantage of by some people. Mostly, people who don't know how to read and write are the people that are taken advantage for. Since they don't know how to read, people scam or use it as an advantage to do something illegal. So it's better to know this skills, so you won't be scam. Third, people should not just know how to read and write, there should be a comprehension. In this skills, it is not simply just reading and writing, understanding is a must!. Because you read and write to understand. On the picture attached above it tells " You learn to write by reading. You learn to read by writing. Reading and writing work together to improve your ability to think." It shows that reading and writing are one. When you learn how to write, you read. And when you learn how to read, you write. Learning reading and writing is a process to attain the ability to think. With reading and writing, it helps us to think and to understand. These two are inseparable.

Reading and writing is a skill that everyone must attain. Because until we grow up, we will be needing this two skills. It helps us to be more open to others, even if you are not speaking. Through reading and writing, we also express ourselves. We express our ideas, opinions and thoughts. Therefore, having this two skill is very important to each and everyone for us. I've also read something that says "reading is inhaling, and writing is exhaling." This is true, because when you have a material you read it, take all the information you understand, and write it to a piece of paper. Best example is when you are reviewing for a test.

So yeah, reading and writing is very important.

Reading and Writing

Reading and writing is one of the most important skills that a person has. We can use reading in our school and when we find job. We apply what we learn in reading through writing.

Through reading, we can gather information, ideas and knowledge. We can explore things and use our imagination. Sometimes when we read, we also communicate with the author. We will know what they feel, or what was the story about. Reading also allows us to focus on something that we want to know about. We become better at vocabulary and we are more familiar to the words. When we read stories, it gives us excitement and joy since we want to know the story. Reading can also lead us to success, we are able to read what was written and we should know how to response. In writing, all of the lessons we learn in reading is what we write. We also know how to write properly. We can express ourselves in writing and we can connect to others. We can know how to spell and how to create a grammar. We can use reading and writing in our education. It really help us to study well. If we know how to read and write, no one will fool us. We can explore a lot of things.

By using this skills, we can have a bright future since we can use it to find job or create a business. This two skill is a treasure that we can have forever. The picture say it all. Try to be happy and satisfied … but how?

So far all I am is a disappointment. I have committed to and failed at most everything I have “set my mind to.” What do I truly want to do in this life? When will I know?

Don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to be melodramatic and I know that others feel the same way, but I still can wonder, can’t I? I think my problem is that I have always “known” what I am supposed to do. Which has not always been something that I have decided on my own. So then, I became a box checker. Do this, then this, then that, and after will be this. I get to a task or event or what have you, and then I cannot even enjoy any of it because I am focused on the next task. For the simplest of examples, as a kid, do you remember how amazing every single holiday was? Yeah, me too, for the most part. But now they are nothing more than added stress or something you feel obligated to participate in. Please tell me that’s not just me. I have considered that maybe I have this ever-growing negative attitude and mindset that is implanted in my anxiety and depression that does not allow me to enjoy everything that once gave me the most joy! How do I fix this? Or is this what they call adulting? If its adulting, I don’t want it.

I have tried to start mentally being honest with myself and seeing what I could possibly do to eradicate these feelings and thoughts and I have come up short every time. The only conclusion I have come to is that I need to do things that make me happy, no matter how big or small. Writing this blog is one of the things I really enjoy. It gives me a place to think through everything and put it out into the world. Sharing it for some reason takes the weight off my shoulders as if I am sharing the burden with someone. Another joyful hobby I have reintroduced to my life is reading. Wow, I never knew the things I loved the most as far as hobbies make me a total nerd. Any who, I made a goal to read at least 10 books this year. So far I am reading book number 4. I am ahead of the odds in making my goal, so that makes me feel proud. Which then does make me happy, so win there. Traveling is the latest interest I have re-added to my life endeavors. Recently I was on a trip to California with my husband and a bunch of my family. Yet again, nerdy, yes, I know. It was a celebration in honor of my Great Uncle’s 80th birthday. The trip alone woke up the travel bug in me but also hearing the stories of my Great Uncle and his travel adventures. He set a goal to reach 100 counties in his lifetime and is only a few shy of completing that goal. What an amazing accomplishment. (But accomplishment isn’t the word I should use because it then turns into more of a check box type of task.) His goal inspired my husband and I to also make a goal of our own. We are planning to reach all 50 states together. We even got one of those Instagram ad worthy maps where you scratch off the states that you traveled to. And if you are wondering, the states that we have been to prior to adventuring together do not count. The states that we will count and scratch off are going to be ones we do together. Our next trip is in the works, Kentucky in November. Cannot wait.

Along with trying to reintroduce hobbies and adventures that make me feel happy I have been doing a deep dive into the one thing that takes up most of my life- my job(s.) For the longest time I have working multiple jobs. I always give the same answer when people ask why I work so much. It’s either, “Saving up for the wedding,” or “Preparing for having kids someday,” or “I just love working.” Problem is- the wedding is done and paid for, kids are a topic I will write about in the future, and I love working because it takes me away from my boring lack luster life. That’s hard to admit but it’s true. I have always used work to avoid everything. This consists of missing holidays or family time because I’ve already shared that it’s not my favorite, my life at home because no matter how hard I try it’s always a mess, and the feeling of not having enough people in my friend group to occupy my time. That’s deep and dark but it’s the truth. It’s a feeling of not being acceptable or living up to the standards of what this arbitrary world has set to be normal.

I just keep spiraling and writing so I apologize to anyone who reads this if it doesn’t make total sense, stream of conciseness. Back to the job situation. The quote that I found years ago is plastered to the left of my computer screen and I look at it daily. Steve Jobs said, “Your work is going to fill a large part of your life and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do, If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle. As with all matters of the heart, you’ll know when you find it.” Looks like I have work to do. I most definitely don’t feel like I am satisfied. I am not able to do great work as much as I have tried. Yet again another topic that I will write about in great detail later on. I don’t have a solution other than that I need to move up or move on. Hopefully this part of my story will soon take a turn for the better.

Now that I have gone further and further into sadness without even trying to I am going to close this with a promise that I am going to continue to try to do better. I am going to try to change my life and turn to true happiness, no matter the list and boxes to check off, no matter anyone’s idea of what I should be and do, and no matter the money and what my work puts as constraints. I will be me starting now, the happy me.
